Fall is our favourite beer time of the year, and while in 2023 we did a deep dive into all things pumpkin ales, in 2024, we switched it up and dove super deep into Fest Biers! Cee and Nate picked up every Fest Bier available at the LCBO (the provincial liquor store in Ontario for those outside of the region) and ran through them while getting into the BJCP definitions of both Fest Biers and Märzens, the epic history of Fest Biers dating back to 1810 in Munich, Germany, all of the nuances that make Fest Biers so special and how they differ from Märzens, and they even wrapped it up with some legendary German Fest Biers for a true comparison. Here's the list of beers that you can grab yourself at most LCBOs in the province: Wellington Festbier Oktoberfest Lager, Samuel Adams October Fest, Left Field Mr. Oktober FestBier, Creemore Oktoberfest Celebratory Lager, Muskoka Stein Sized Fest Bier, Stockyard Festbier, Anderson Craft Ales FestBier, Paulaner Oktoberfest Bier, and Hofbräu Oktoberfestbier. For those that love studying the history of the Disney parks, every once in a while a unique concept is stumbled upon. Something that is a little different from the castle parks and Vacation Club resorts. Every once in a while information comes out about one of Walt’s regional experiments, be it the famous Mineral King project in California or Riverfront Square in St Louis. Often these are seen as the Disneylands that never were, but there was one project that did come to life, and actually operated all the way up into the 1990’s. Located in my adopted hometown, Denver, CO, the Celebrity Sports Center is a not-as-well known hospitality oasis founded by Walt Disney himself. Celebrity Lanes, as it was first known, opened in 1960, and was given its unique moniker due to the initial band of investors Walt lined up to open the complex. Joining Walt in this endeavor were his brother Roy, Jack Benny, George Burns, Bing Crosby, Burl Ives, Art Linkletter, as well as Charles Laughton, John Payne, Spike Jones, and Jim and Marion Jordan. Technically located within Glendale, Colorado, the location was chosen due to the large population growth the area was experiencing. Denver was already known for its outdoor adventures, but needed indoor recreation for the cold winter months. To fill this need, the Center was home to 80 lanes of bowling, three arcades eventually featuring more than 300 video games spread between them, a full service restaurant, Hofbrau, Coffee and Soda Shops, and even a Shooting Gallery. A year later, an olympic-sized pool was added to the attraction lineup. Reminding Guests of the Disney connection, it wasn’t uncommon to see Goofy water skiing on the 500,000 gallon pool. Outside the watery confines, the big cheese himself, Mickey Mouse would also make appearances. Walt, ever the perfectionist, even assigned an art director from Disneyland to the center to oversee new additions. The Center would be expanded throughout its history, adding waterslides and dining options. However, it was not always successful. Within a few years of opening, management issues would scare away many of the celebrity investors that had been so critical to the opening of the complex. Beginning in October 1961, Walt Disney Productions began to buy out the other partners, and by 1962 was the sole owner of the property. It was at this time, the complex took on the name Celebrity Sports Center. For Walt, this was not just a mere entertainment enterprise. This was a chance to address societal needs. Children and Teens, no longer part of the workforce to the degree they had previously were, needed something to do, amusement to keep them out of trouble. This center provided that, at a reasonable cost. But the biggest advantage this place had was the ability to train future managers for the upcoming “Disneyland East” project Walt was dreaming up for Central Florida. Employees at the Center were held to the same high standards Walt expected from his Disneyland Cast Members, and as Disneyland employees, they also received the benefits of working in the kingdom. Really, the center was a small Disneyland in the Rocky Mountains. But, like all good things, this too came to an end. After Walt’s death in 1966, Walt Disney Productions continued to operate the Center to train management for their Florida operations. In 1979, amidst the planning and construction of larger projects in Orlando and Japan, WDP sold the property to a group of buyers. The new owners continued to expand the complex throughout the 1980’s and its popularity soared. However, the success was not to be long lived. By the late 80’s the center began to attract more troublesome visitors, and attendance began to decline. With this decline came an equal decline in revenue, and in 1994, it was announced the Celebrity Sports Center would be closed forever, its land sold for retail development.

Munich-Style Helles(Description courtesy of Beer Advocate)“Helles” means “pale in color,” as these beers are often golden. The German-style Helles lager is a bit rounder or fuller-bodied than light lager and even all-malt pilsners. Helles lager beers offer a touch of sweetness that balance a measurable addition of spicy German hop flavor and light bitterness. The malt character is soft and bready, making it a terrific complement to light dishes such as salad or fresh shellfish, like clams. Clean and crisp, this is a refreshing beer with substance. -Color – Pale to Golden-Clarity: Appearance should be bright; chill haze should not be presentPerceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Malt aroma and flavor are pronounced. Low levels of yeast-produced sulfur aromas and flavors may be present. Malt character is sometimes bready and suggestive of lightly toasted malted barley. There should be no caramel character.- Hop Aroma and Flavor and Bitterness Hop aroma is not perceived to low. Hop flavor is very low to low, derived from noble-type hops.-Four Noble HopsoHallertauer Mittelfrüh.oTettnang.oSpalt.oSaaz.-Body: Medium-ABV: 4.8%-5.6%-Glassware: Flute Glass - The world of champagne lends elegance to certain types of beer. Long and narrow bodies ensure that carbonation doesn't dissipate too quickly and showcase a lively carbonation or sparkling color. Surely there is something that you want to know from a fellow AIE member. Keep it clean folks, these are family friendly forums! (go to the forums!)   Speaking of such, the Emperor is asking for...volunteers for information collection. Unless you are a Bothan, it should be completely harmless. You can sign up in the forums to be on the list for the “Ask a SWTOR Guildie” threads!   We have quite a few meetups coming up in the great state of California. The AIE gang out in Pasadena will be celebrating the new year with a meetup at Lucky Baldwin's on Saturday January 18th, the San Francisco crew will be holding a winter raid on Harry's Hofbrau in San Jose on January 25th, and the great and wonderful Belthaz is looking to put together a gathering at a Rocky Horror Picture Show screening in Los Angeles on February 22nd. And not to be outdone, the Washington D.C. group will be holding a meetup at AwesomeCon on February 18th. So if you'll be anywhere near any of those meetups, you'll want to RSVP on the AIE Meetup.com site and join in the fun!   Blizzard has been abuzz with changes that are coming in warlords of draenor! Among them changes to Crowd control! Lore in the forums has been talking about the proposed changes coming to CC, what they like, what they don't and there is some buzz about the removal of some of it. If you want  to find out more head to the blizzard forums.   And speaking of blizzard, for all of you who are betting about the date of warlords of draenor, you might have to adjust your timeframes. There is a new PVP season planned between now and the next expanion's release! Holinka on twitter announced the news on the 7th, but there seem to be no further details yet.   I've mentioned this in the past once before, but a former coworker who is kickstarting a CCG/Deckbuilder game is sooo close to funding. If you might be interested in such things, please check out War of Omens. If you contribute more than 10 bucks, they will give you a beta key immediately! 3 more days left on this, and a few thousand to go! GAME NEWS   Previously, on Star Trek Online…  We left off with the Romulan Republic establishing a new homeworld on Dewa 3, now called New Romulus.  After thwarting the schemes of the Tal Shiar, our adventurous captain learns of a great secret, and possibly the reason for Dewa 3's desertion: An Iconian gateway.  And now, the continuation of Star Trek Online.   Before re-activating the gateway, Ambassador Worf is asked by the Klingon Defense Force to oversee the project, due to his previous experience with such technology (TNG S2E11 Contagion).  An earthquake shakes the chamber, and forces everyone to make a do-or-die decision.  Everyone flees into the gateway to avoid being crushed.  On the other side, the captain learns of plans the Iconians have for the Alpha Quadrant, as well as their hand in a number of other events.  After reactivating a gate near the Jouret System, where some Elachi forces arrive.

AIE NEWS  If you are currently playing FFXIV but weren't able to get your character on Gilgamesh, which is AIE's Server, Abovan let us know that Transfers are starting the 15th of Oct, so that's next Tuesday, and they'll be free for 5 days! He'll also be here next show to talk about our presence there!   Book of Heroes has certainly had waves of interest, then RL kicks in and perhaps the lack of complexity with it being Andriod/iOS causes flagging attendance, but there are still folks playing! It looks like there needs to be another guild compression, and from what has been read, it appears you only dip down to loyalty 4 (of possible 5) when changing guilds! Please comment in the forum post BOH -- Merges II: Son of Merges in the Imperium Ludi: Minor League Games to get your voice heard.   Unfortunately Ghomus won't be able to make this one, but there is a raid this weekend, on Harry's Hofbrau on Sunday at 1pm in San Jose, CA! If you happen to be on the OTHER coast, there is in fact a group trying to get together at New York Comic Con as well. Check the Meetup.com site for more information on these and many others! There are 347 members of AIE signed up there, and I KNOW there are more of us out there!   It looks like it was announced this week on TMS, that Nerdtacular 2014 will be July 4th once again!  Watch Nerdtacular.com and the forums (go to the forums!)  for more details as they surface.   It appears that we've put ALL the SW:TOR officers through the ringer of question and answer sessions. So Dark Lord Pel-patine has moved onto fellow guildies in a galaxy far far away! this month? Cliffy! Hit up the thread on the forums to ask some random crazy things of him!   BlizzCon and the AIE Guild Hall is just one month away! Even though the Kickstarter has more than funded, it's not too late for you to get in on the super cool rewards. You can still pick up a custom one-of-a-kind guild hall t-shirt and other goody bag prizes, and there are still spots open for a raid run with the officers or a game of Card Against Humanity with Scott Johnson. But you need to hurry! The Kickstarter ends tomorrow, Oct 11th.   Even if you don't back the Kickstarter, or even have a ticket to BlizzCon, if you're anywhere nearby, you really need to come experience the AIE Guild Hall. It's free to all AIE members, even if you don't play WoW, and will be full of food, fun, and a number of special guests. How special? So special we're not even allowed to tell you who they are, but trust me, you'll want to be there. And if you can't be there in person, tune in to the live stream and chat room and join in on the fun from wherever you are. AIE MEMBER SPOTLIGHT   This week we're giving a shoutout to AIE members Althemage and Aeos, hosts of the Azeroth Roundtable podcast, where they cover World of Warcraft along with with a touch of news, and an open discussion about various topics. They usually have a guest from the WoW community, whether it be podcaster, segment producer, or blogger.   If you're a member of AIE and host a podcast, have written a book, published a web comic, or have done anything else extraordinary, we want to brag about you on the show. Send details about your awesomeness to us at podcast@aie-guild.org, and be sure to let us know if we need to warn people if it's not quite family-friendly.   And with that, let's get into AIE in The Secret World... July 29th - August 4th! This event is an old AIE tradition where we let our hair down and give back to the guild! Past events have included COOP Runs, The Running of the Beef, Dance parties, scavenger hunts, fishing clubs, costume contests and ninja buffers! Sophililia, our coordinator, has open slots for any guildie who has ideas about events! You don't have to be an officer to sign up or make an event! Hit the thread for more information and to find out how you too can contribute to an awesome summer of love! Addl message from Takemikazuch: Looking for someone who would be willing and capable of doing the fireworks for the service this year. I have the fireworks, all that's needed is manpower and launchers. If anyone is willing to take this on, please let Tak and Sophilia know!   Local to the SF Bay area in California? The meetup at Harry's Hofbrau has been moved to NEXT Sunday, July 28th, so it would not conflict with San Diego Comic Con this weekend. The forums have all the information regarding this. I won't be able to attend this one because of my tabletop Shadowrun campaign, but if you can go, you should!   World of Warcraft is now offering transmog helms in their in game store! 15 dollars US will buy you horns made of fire, a helm of ice, or this odd death-y drippy looking thing. These helms are bind to account and are stored in the transmog vendor himself.   Guild Wars 2 is getting some great new content this July 23! The patch is called Cutthroat Politics! From the site “The explosive events of the Dragon Bash festival left the Captain's Council of Lion's Arch with a vacant seat. Lionguard Inspector Ellen Kiel and Black Lion Trader Evon Gnashblade both want to fill that seat – but neither of them can win it alone!”   Hey buddy, wanna buy a tribble? Wait, you don't have to. As Takemikazuch posted in the AIE Star Trek Online forums, you can now get a FREE Nukara Tribble that generates a Nukara Mark every hour that it's attached to your character. It's only available for a limited time, so if you're an STO player and might be taking a break from the game, be sure to log in to claim yours.   Don't forget! AIE has a Greenwall in real life! We have our own Jabber server, so you can use your favorite chat client to chat with other AIE members who are also stuck out of game battling the dreaded Work boss. Instructions are on the forums and in the AIE Wiki.   Nerdtacular was a blast, but that's not the only place AIE members get together in real life. We have our yearly gathering at DragonCon, our own three-day guild hall at Blizzcon, and several other local meet-ups on the calendar. Check out out our page at Meetup.

AIE NEWS The Raid Wrapup has been on a little bit of a hiatus, but it's back! Sihx is once again reporting on the accomplishments of our AIE raid teams, and he's looking for your submissions! Remember, this covers all raid teams in ALL games that AIE is a part of, and he might not play them all, so try to give him some info to go off of. Brag about your raid team by replying to his post in the community section of our forums, or email him directly at aieraidwrapup@gmail.com. This seems to come up now and again, so it bears repeating, for those of you that are looking to join AIE (and why wouldn't you, we're awesome!) it really is simple. All you need to do is go to http://umami.aie-universal.net and submit an application! All of our games are open every day for an application submission. Just please remember that every single application is looked at by a human being, and sometimes those humans like to play too! STO's Starbase is progressing along nicely, having reached tier 3. Tons of folks are chipping in resources to get this developed, and Cap'n Hunter is starting to spread the mission types a bit to make sure we can continue along this development path, to gain XP as well as provisioned resources. And a reminder! you can buy some of the best equipment, boosts and consumables from the base you're helping build! Speaking of Star Trek Online, they just release a new Fleet Asset today; the Dilithium Mine Outpost. This is a big floating asteroid that AIE Starfleet members can explore and progress through on missions that gives them the opportunity to earn additional dilithium ore every day in a variety of ways, access new vendors, receive discounts on fleet holdings, and much more. As RattoZatto says in the forums, time to get mining! OK, you know you want to play EVE. We talk about how great the game is every week here on the podcast, you've heard how fun and crazy it can get, with massive space battles and all sorts of adventures and sub-plots, and if you've watched the video version of the podcast, you've even seen how beautiful it is. Well, Capt Hunter is putting out the call for all you potential space pilots to join the cause, and he's helping by offering free 21 day trials for EVE. Just hit up his Why You Should Join AIE in EVE thread in the Community Discussion section of the forums and buckle up for some serious space madness. For all of you AIErs in the Central or Northern California area, there is going to be an AIE community meetup next month, on Sunday, July 21st at 1pm at Harry's Hofbrau in San Jose. So if you live in San Jose, or  the San Francisco Bay Area, or anywhere around there, hit the AIE Meetup.com page to RSVP for the gathering Don't forget, if you want to see which AIE members live near you, you can take a look at or add your own pin to the AIE Member Map. Look for the “Put Your Mark on the Map” post in the community section of the forums, and sign up for the AIE Meetup.com page so you can get notified about the meetups in your area, or even plan your own. Nerdtacular is coming very soon! Click the link in the show notes as there are just too many threads to list. People are organizing events both before and after, from hikes in the valley, to pool tournaments. Also ride and room shares! We're coming right up to the event now, so hopefully you have already got your travel arrangements there, but make sure to check out the whole SECTION of the forums! And with that, it's time to get back to RattoZatto and Grimbane to talk about The Secret World...   GAME NEWS Issue #7 is coming soon.

AIE NEWS We have a new guildie of the moment! Everyone give three cheers to Duam of SWTOR! This guildie went above and beyond to help another guildie who writes: “hi, i'd just like to take a second and nominate Duam for guildie of the moment. he really went out of his way to give me a hand crafting some stuff today. it's hard to stand out in a giant community full of great people but Duam does.” And remember if you know someone who you would like to nominate for Guildie of the moment let your officers know by writing in to officers@aie-guild.org.   AIE IN RL! There are a bunch of Meetup.com events happening! A raid on Harry's Hofbrau in Ghomus's area, what looks like a gathering at Dave and Busters in Ontario, CA. Also what looks to be like a motorcycle ride, complete with doughnuts, and of course Nerdtacular and Blizzcon guild halls! Form your own or join others, signing up is free!   Wagz looks like he's leading the pack in AIE SW:TOR. He's the first person in AIE to get a 55 in BOTH Republic and Imperial sides! In looking at some of the responses here, it looks like he's WAY ahead of some! Let's hit that new level cap, folks!   Great job folks, it looks like, the composer of our Awesome theme, Andrew Allen, had his  kickstarter for Free Play go over the 100% mark! There is of course no reason to stop now, they've already said that anyone who has pledged 15 dollars or more will automatically be able to download an MP3 or AAC of the album free! So we look forward to see what the following stretch goals will be!   Yet ANOTHER example why you should go to the forums if you play WoW in AIE. Some folks were doing the Throne of Thunder LFR consistently over a few weeks, and showing up on Wednesdays. So they figured, ‘hey, let's organize and get more AIE Folks! So if you are looking to get in there, this would be a great opportunity to NOT have to deal with LFR without a nice AIE Roster helping!   Sick of all those iOS users having all the latest info on their Fancy Nerdtacular App? Nicole Spag has heard the call of the Android and the Nerdcular App is now available! It's a great application, with schedules of events, photos, and you can even purchase tickets through such!   In other AIE SW:TOR news, it appears the Neuroid is going to be attending a Cantina Tour which will include a Developer Q&A which will be happening on May 17th! He's put the thread in the forums so if you've got questions, like “Why are there no Hoojib pets?” or “Why are Squibs not a playable race!?” There are already a variety of questions answered from past Q&As, so take a look at the thread and add to it!   And with that, let's welcome this week's guests Syreyne and Hunts the Wind   GAME NEWS It's Spring!  And you know what that means?  Its time for the Craft Faire in WoW.  The Craft Faire is going to be held on April 27th and 28th in Silvermoon City. Check out the forum post for more details.  Also, please use the signup form to pre-register for the Faire.. http://forum.myextralife.com/topic/49412-2013-spring-craft-faire-official-thread/#entry824792   NEW: Vent is a requirement this time around and please have patience while you wait your turn.  It can get pretty crazy in there.   The craft faire has grown so legendary that someone sent mats in for tailoring and they aren't even a member of AIE.  They heard about the faire, thought it was cool, and decided to help.   We still need dependable people to volunteer to help work at the Craft Faire.  If you ever thought of giving back to the guild,

All that and more coming up right now...  We've got a great show today, with special guests Ratto Zatto and Capt Hunter  standing by to talk to us about Star Trek Online -  but first, the news...   AIE NEWS A meetup in my own Backyard! Well, close to, anyways. There is going to be a raid on the Harry's Hofbrau in San Jose, CA in 2 weekends! The time is not set in stone, but I know there are a few people in this area, that I'd love to meet up with you. Shout out to Oakdragon for trying to get this organized!   And it looks like Emperor Pellpatine, on April 1st, (no joke!), has put up another SW:TOR officer for you to ask all your crazy questions to! This month? Sema! Be nice folks!   Nerdtacular tickets are NOW available! Head on over to Eventbrite to pick em up! Keep in mind that if you happened to get such through Kickstarter you should have already gotten an email which will tell you how to pick up your tickets!   Speaking of Nerdtacular, it looks like Max (from last week's show) and a bunch of others are trying to get organized for a Running of the Nerds! There were of course concerns that Salt Lake City IS at altitude (around 4400 feet!), so keep that in mind, but a few die hard folks ARE going to be doing at least a few runs while there!   Not sure if we want to call it a reboot, or if we want to call it a new chapter in the life of CapStable, but the podcast brought to you by AIEU has returned to the airwaves! Er...spacewaves? Anyways, if you have any interest in EVE you should check it out!   The ever-talented Andrew Allen, the composer of our new show theme, has reached the 15 day mark for his Kickstarter and he's 83% of the way there! Tell your friends, we know how many people listen to this podcast, and how many of you like video game music! Support a Frogpants regular and get this album funded early!   And finally, we'll end with a little rumors and scuttlebut. Apparently some details of Blizzard's mysterious game, code named Titan, have been leaked. We don't know how true it is, but someone who knows someone who might know something says Titan will be based on Earth history, and will include everything from modern weapons to magic, time travel and  heavy use of Greek, Roman, and Viking myths.   For more information on everything we covered in the news, you can find links in our show notes on our website at www.theaiepodcast.com. And of course, read the AIE Forums!   And with that, let's welcome our guests, Ratto Zatto and Capt Hunter on the show to talk to us about AIE's adventures in Star Trek Online GAME NEWS   Hunter and RattoZatto introduce themselves.  Our positions in AIE STO.   How free is free?  We'll explain what's accessible.  http://sto.perfectworld.com/about/freetoplay/features-matrix What's Zen & Dilithium?   New expansion and that Romulans are like Panderians (Kinda, sorta, not really, except that they are).   Current state of the fleet and where we are with Starbase expansion.  Starbase level 5, tier 2 starbase unlocks, tier 2 tactical and science unlocks, tier 1 Recruitment unlocks and what's on the horizon.   What end game content there is.  Special Task Force, New Romulus.  (plus the fact you can replay missions and the rewards scale with you, so high replay value)   Personal experiences (missions we particularly liked, memorable moments, etc.) In particular, the "Trekiness" of it all, from seeing familiar faces to walking the decks of places you've seen in the shows.   The Foundry (player created missions) CLOSE   And that's our show for tonight. Big thanks to Ratto Zatto and Capt Hunter for joining us!
