There is a growing body of opinion across shipping that is routinely referring to nuclear, alongside carbon capture technology, as the only real options on the table that will allow shipping to fully decarbonise by 2050. Has the previously fringe option of nuclear powered ships now become sufficiently mainstream for the industry to genuinely consider leapfrogging ammonia and hydrogen as a more pragmatic solution? Pragmatism seems to be the new buzzword sweeping through the shipping executive lexicon. What that means though requires a bit of decoding. Those of you who have been schlepping round the conference circuit at Posidonia in Athens this week will have no doubt noticed that it comes up quite a lot when talking about decisions that have not been made. A lot has happened in the past few years, we need to factor in energy security as well as energy transition. The technology is there, the regulation is coming, but realistically the fuel supply is not. We need to focus on efficiency this decade, and, by the way 2050 net zero now seems pretty unlikely now. We need to be pragmatic. Is this outbreak of pragmatism a genuine shift towards a more realistic conversation? Is it a resetting after the greenwashed ambitions that never really had any substance? Or are we starting to feel the ESG backlash playing out and pulling back on the difficult substance of what lies ahead in terms of the energy transition? There has certainly been a shift. Given that this push for pragmatism is coming, not from the environmental laggards, but from many of the most progressive voices who previously argued with conviction for ambition when it came to shipping's energy transition and all that entails, the podcast this week reports from Posidonia. Joining Lloyd's List editor-in-chief Richard Meade around Athens this week to discuss what this all means: Jan Dieleman, President of Cargill Ocean Transportation Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO of DNV – Maritime Matthieu de Tugny. President, Marine & Offshore, Bureau Veritas. Bud Darr, Executive Vice President, Maritime Policy and Government Affairs, MSC Group Christopher J. Wiernicki, CEO of ABS

Venice has restricted the size of vessels that can visit the port and go through the Grand Canal, the main waterway of Venice. Windstar Cruises is able to visit the port due to its small size and sail through the scenic Grand Canal channel.Bar Harbor has limited the number of guests monthly and daily that can visit the port (note that legal action is pending). Key West has been looking to limit cruise ship visits and which port berths are available for use. French Polynesia has banned cruise ships with capacity greater than 3,500 passengers from making port calls in the country. Ships over 2,500 passengers are allowed to dock in Tahiti and Moorea; however, tiny Bora Bora allows just 1,200 cruise passengers per day. Windstar has been sailing in Tahiti for more than 35 years, and no other cruise line knows the islands, or rules, like them. Both Windstar's 148 motorized sailing yacht (which was tailor-made for cruising Tahiti's islands) and 312-guest all-suite yacht sail there, accessing Bora Bora, Raiatea, Moorea, and others. Santorini, Greece is limited to 8,000 passengers ashore per day. Some ships have been forced to change itineraries as a result.Juneau is moving to only allowing five ships to dock a day, with no ship able to anchor over a certain passenger count and no “hot berthing,” i.e., when two ships occupy the same berth at different times during the day. On this episode of the Talent Acquisition Leaders podcast, host Ryan Dull welcomes Trent Cotton, VP Talent Acquisition & Retention at Bureau Veritas Group, a global company that performs various types of testing, inspection, and certification. Trent talks about the unique aspect of his particular job. He has to identify and recruit specialized talent to fill many of their open roles, because not everyone is qualified to perform testing, inspections, or certifications. In order to get the best results, Trent's first order of business at his new position has been to analyze all the processes he inherited and figure out ways to improve and streamline them. He admits to being a bit of a technology junkie, and he is a big fan of automating any process with the latest tools available; not to replace humans, but to make their lives easier. His advice for young professionals coming into the TA profession is to never lose your intellectual curiosity. He reminds people that nobody has all the answers, so keep asking questions, keep learning, and keep growing as a professional and as a person. Can you just tell the judge that, last you heard, Peter, Paul, and Mary were leaving on a jet plane, and you don't know when they'll be back again, so you're probably going to read their depositions? Check out this outstanding episode, which discusses Fed. R. Civ. P. 32, Fed. R. Evid. 804, and others you'll need to know, including Fed. R. Civ. P. 43, 45, and Fed. R. Evid. 402, 403 and 602.
