The controversial arrangement gives her father control of her career, estate and much of her personal life. Don't forget my words or turn away from them. ~ Proverbs 4:5 (NLT) There was a pop song from the early 2000s that climbed the charts all the way up to the number one position. It was a song by a young woman who had risen to stardom very rapidly. Her name was Britney Spears, and the song was called “Oops, I Did It Again!” If you've ever heard it, it is one of those earworms (a song that can get stuck in your head). Musically it isn't great. Vocally it doesn't really have any complexity to it. So, why did this song find such success? Because the lyrics, the concept of the song resonated with a lot of people. The song is about a girl who keeps giving her heart, her love, her affections to a particular boy. But, then she just ends up playing games with his emotions. She realizes she's not treating him well, and that it's not right to do so. But, she just can't seem to shake the impulse to toy with his love life. So, the “oops” is a statement about her inability to learn from her mistakes. The unfortunate reality is that this sort of thing happens every day in our own lives. No, we might not toy with other people's emotional well-being (If you are, you need to stop). But, all of us have made the same mistakes over and over again. We keep going back to the same thing over and over thinking it will somehow turn out differently. It doesn't. King Solomon imparts some wisdom on this topic when he writes, “Get wisdom; develop good judgment. Don't forget my words or turn away from them.” Let me put this in a different way, “Wise up! Don't keep making the same mistakes. Learn from them.” Much like the young man in Britney's song that keeps going back to a girl who is just playing him, we need to learn that what Satan tempts us with is no good. It will never be good, no matter how bad we wish it was. His intentions are evil, not born out of love (and they never will be). This is why God's instructions are so powerful. They aren't temptations, they are hard fast, wisdom-giving rules that will help us avoid mistakes that will hurt our character, hurt others, and ultimately hurt our relationship with our Creator. They aren't born out of evil like temptations. They are born out of eternal love. There are no “oops” when it comes to God's instructions. He's not into playing games. According to Wikipedia, the term includes errors due to mechanical failure or slips of the hand or finger, but excludes errors of ignorance, such as spelling errors, or the flip-flopping of words such as “than” and “then”. Most typos include simple duplication, omission, transposition, or substitution of a small number of characters. “Fat-finger syndrome” is a slang term that refers to an unwanted secondary action when typing. When someone’s finger is bigger than the touch zone, there can be inaccuracy in the fine motor movements and accidents occur. This action happens often with touchscreens, particularly when a person hits two adjacent keys on the keyboard in a single keystroke. For example, “buckled” instead of “bucked” There may also be “intentional” typos, which are typos that may be used deliberately for humorous purposes. Deliberately introducing typos into a web page, or into its metadata, can also draw unwitting visitors when they enter these typos into search engines Cybersquatting refers to the act of registering, trafficking in, or using an internet domain name with bad faith intent to profit from the goodwill of a trademark belonging to someone else. The squatter then offers to sell the domain to the person or company who owns a trademark contained within the name at an inflated price. As a phishing scheme to mimic the brand's site, while intercepting passwords which the visitor enters unsuspectingly To install drive-by malware or revenue generating adware onto the visitors' devices To harvest misaddressed email messages mistakenly sent to the typo domain To block malevolent use of the typo domain by others To express an opinion that is different from the intended website's opinion Since the emergence of online auctions, misspelled auction searches have quickly become lucrative for people searching for deals. The concept is based on the incidence that, should someone post an auction and misspell its description or title, regular searches for the item won’t find that auction. A search that includes misspelled alterations of the item would find most misspelled auctions. In fact, a series of third-party websites have sprung up allowing people to find these items. There have been different ways of marking typos over the course of typography technology When using a typewriter without correction tape, typos were commonly overstruck with another character such as a slash. This saved the typist the trouble of retyping the entire page to eliminate the error, but as evidence of the typo remained, it was not aesthetically pleasing. Patterson, chemistry editor at Merriam-Webster, sent an internal communication to the printers that included the phrase “D or d, cont./density.” The intention was to add “density” to the existing list of words that the letter “D” can abbreviate. The printer misunderstood, and instead printed a single, run-together word: dord, meaning density. The typo got past proofreaders and appeared on page 771 of the dictionary in 1934. It wasn’t until February 28, 1939, that an editor noticed “dord” lacked an etymology, and an urgent plate change soon followed The Therac-25 was a device from the 1980s that was designed to treat cancer patients with controlled bursts of radiation. When the initial glitch appeared, the error alarm was disabled while it was “fixed.” The alarm was never turned back on, meaning when the bug acted up again, it remained hidden until it was too late On July 22, 1962, the Mariner 1 space probe was launched from Cape Canaveral for its journey to Venus. Shortly after liftoff, however, it became clear that something was wrong. The rocket carrying the probe began to veer off course, putting it into a path that would carry it not only to a crash landing, but one in a populated area. With no other choice, NASA officials sent a self-destruct signal, destroying the probe and spreading debris across several states.  While coding the spacecraft’s guidance system, a programmer forgot a single hyphen, causing the $80M project to literally go up in flames before it even left the atmosphere On October 8, 2013, President Obama’s senior advisor for strategy and communications, Dan Pfeiffer, was discussing politics with a few of his Twitter followers. NEW FOR JANUARY 15, 2017 For a full 10 years now, (math properly checked this time) BRYHNH producer Rick From New York has been tasked for what has developed into one of each year's most anticipated shows. This annual event is Rick's perspective on the best tracks played on BRYHNH from the previous year, affectionately known as Rick's Picks. Now to be sure, this end of year "Best Of" list is not what you might expect. This is Rick From New York meticulously sifting through Volumes 274 - 300 and choosing the finest tracks, both new releases and classics you may or may not have ever heard before, that graced the BRYHNH feed from the past year. And again, Rick has picked a list of winners like a six year old can pick a booger. As you will read below, there is a dispute over the linear nature of the events that led up to the thematic content dispute between episodes 301 and 302 that Rick attributes to a Mexican cactus debauch. But I heartily say this can only be settled by a Mexican cactus summit on my turf. Where my people can provide protection. It was only business, Rick. I always liked you. So as the bell rings to start round one, I present to you: Not Dead Yet - Rick's Picks 2016 We now join Rick in progress . . . I've been doing this for a while now. In December, every year since 2006, I get a little kernel of anxiety in the pit of my stomach as the deadline for the January 15th "Rick's Picks" approaches. I want to do a good job of representing BRYHNH, staying true to the Brand while inserting my own take on the year's offerings, but... am I up to it? A couple of times I thought about trying to back out because, after all, December can be a crazy-busy time and believe it or not, putting this podcast together has more to it than you might think, as I have written about previously. This year the kernel became a throbbing mass as I realized that my ears had died to most of my musical interests. Because the nature of my obsessions are not fully understood, or under control, I am constantly led down odd streets, and sometimes... blind alleys. How else to explain my year-long obsession with the music of "Hamilton: an American Musical"? December arrived once again, along with the gnawing realization that I had only a very short time to immerse myself in the BRYHNH universe to pull out an acceptable contribution. Well, inspiration arrived just like a shiny Christmas morning; how could I not acknowledge the passing of so many music icons in 2016? All I had to do was cherry-pick the years' podcasts for my dearly departed playlist! Perfect! And easy, I thought. I promptly emailed Perry Bax with my idea, to which he responded with a hearty thumbs up, and encouragement that I was "on a good track". Imagine my surprise when on 01.01.17 "In the Wake of 2016" drops. Bowie, Prince, Russell, Frey and Emerson...all there. Even a belated Leonard Cohen track I had planned on using on my fadeout! Was I upset? No. Taken aback? Definitely. But what's a bit of larceny between friends, eh? I may have emailed during a Mexican Holiday Tequila Debauch and in the cold light of day (ouch!), I'm sure Mr. Bax thought it was HIS idea. This Week's Show: When we first mulled over the idea of doing a Year in Review show about the Year 2000, we thought what most people our age thought; "Was there enough good music released that year for a full episode. Well, today we can proudly tell you that YES, there was a lot of good music released that year. Of course, most of the stuff that us Decibel Geeks dig the most was sorely lacking in exposure due to the rise of boy bands, pop divas, and nu-metal ruling the popular music charts.  We dug deep into our archives, as well as many other nooks and crannies, to bring you some true diamonds in the rough. We are pretty confident that you'll definitely get turned on to some great new tunes/bands this week with Part 1 of our 2000 Year in Review. January was, of course, a pivotal month in history as everyone was calming their nerves after realizing that the world didn't actually come to an end on January 1st as had been predicted by more than a few wackos who had overhyped the Y2K paranoia that swept the nation at the end of 1999. Aaron spins a track from the deliciously-titled Regurgitation album by Tuff to start things off followed by a stalwart choice form AC/DC's February-released Stiff Upper Lip album. Chris spins an uptempo rocker from the Rollins Band that includes his then-new backing back and it's a barn burner for sure. Heading into March, we spin choices from Pantera, Enuff Z'nuff, Armored Saint, and Dio; all amazing bands that were overshadowed in the public view by NSYNC as they were busy selling 2.4 million copies of their new album in one week. Something ain't right when that happens.... April of 2000 brought us KISS announcing their Farwell Tour. What's that? They're still around 12 years later? Hmm, well we discuss what circumstances could have caused that while also discussing Ted Nugent ruffling some feathers from the stage during that same tour as he was the opening act. Ted, in the words of Aerosmith, please let the music do the talking. But, we digress. Also in April, Lars Ulrich became rock music's public enemy number one as he and his mates in Metallica filed suit against peer-to-peer service Napster and fired the opening salvo of a copyright-based civil war that is still raging today.  We spin a track by the relatively unknown Samantha 7, who has a well known singer who had too many irons in the fire in 2000 and forced the S7 side project back on the shelf. You'll get a taste of what might have been this week. In May of 2000 Britney Spears was raking in dough and album sales through her style-over-substance based second LP, Oops!...I Did It Again as it sold 1.3 million copies in its debut week and 20 million over its lifetime. We lament the general public's poor taste by spinning tracks by Dynamite Hack, Orange Goblin, Bad Religion, and King's X; giving you a healthy dose of true musical substance to chew on.  After the break we segue from May to June with a track that truly marked the return of a legend as Iron Maiden roared back with the return of Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith with Brave New World. While there was definite excitement among hardcore Iron Maiden fans, the album failed to reach the numbers of previous Dickinson-sung releases. June included a controversial release from Queens of the Stone Age and we spin a track that could double for a junkie's shopping list and includes backing vocals from a certain Metal God. Speaking of Metal Gods, Alice Cooper released Brutal Planet; an album that quite clearly was a stab at capitalizing on the nu-metal movement of the era with hit and miss results. Closing out Part 1 of this 2000 Year in Review is a track by NY hardcore band Madball and one of the heaviest Poison tracks you'll ever hear from their Power to the People release. I found some old versions of the Britney Spears song "Oops, I Did It Again," one by Louis Armstrong and some Big Band thing. In that spirit, I also "found" an old version of the song by Bob Dylan, although he apparently thought the word "oops" was beneath him. Recorded with GarageBand.
