“Hit up” significa “contactar,” pero “hit on” significa “coquetear” y “hit off”, más específicamente “hit it off” significa “llevarse bien con alguien que acabas de conocer”. Confuso, ¿no? Bueno, en el episodio de hoy queremos aclarar un poco las dudas con los verbos compuestos. ¿Listo? Ready? ¡Vamos a estudiar!

Although it barely dented the charts compared to the mega-smashes of her Miss American teen dreams, Britney teamed up with the likes of Pharrel Williams, Robyn and Junkie XL for her fifth album, ‘Blackout'. Recorded between her divorce with back-up dancer Kevin Federline and the conservatorship dispute that plagued her thirties, this 2007 collection of forward-thinking electro-bangers both charted the abyss of TMZ celebrity and predicted the future of pop to come. It's hard to imagine the chilly sex-positive electropop of Lady Gaga's Telephone without this coming first, and mid-LP sleeper success ‘Freakshow' implemented the then-burgeoning sound of second-wave dubstep years before Skrillex dabbled in mainstream wub-wubs.  ‘Blackout' is also #441 on Rolling Stone magazine's 2020 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Christopher and Liam discuss everything from the Netflix documentary Britney Vs Spears, to our childhood reminsces of Britney hits like Hit Me Baby One More Time, Toxic and Slave 4 U. All that plus Secret Posho, Tattoo Woohoo/Tattoo Boohoo, the Bette Midler Factor, Unhinged Youtube Comment of the Week, and so much more. Enjoy An Album. Enjoy!

Britney Spears has been in a #conservatorship for the past 13 years, as most pop culture fans are aware. A conservatorship, often known as "adult guardianship," is the legal framework in which Britney's father, Jaime Spears, and other individuals have practically unlimited authority over her legal, financial, and personal decisions. Britney's conservatorship was first created in February 2008, after she experienced a mental breakdown and was briefly hospitalized. Britney Spears has been one of the world's most famous and popular pop performers since her breakthrough single, "...Hit Me Baby One More Time," when she was a teen. Despite her celebrity status and immense wealth, Britney, who is now 39, has never really had complete control over her life, a fate most of us cannot imagine for a person of her age.

Music You're Missing

Canadian pop group VALLEY joined us today for a new, slightly 90s-themed episode of “Music You’re Missing”. Although we’re pretty sure they’re always this infectiously energetic, VALLEY is riding off the high of some insane news that we’re so excited to get the inside scoop on. Not only did they just announce their tour with COIN for fall 2021 - which will be VALLEY’s first batch of performances since quarantine - but they’ve also been celebrating an electric new single. The nostalgic hit track, “Like 1999”, was born from a 30-minute songwriting exercise in a random AirBnB somewhere in the woods of Toronto (the usual setting for every viral hit). VALLEY was taking time over quarantine to focus on creating, and popped out “Like 1999” during a co-write with Charlie Adams and Johnathan of Nightly. The song completely blew up on TikTok - no surprise to us - and has been steadily growing since its release on all streaming platforms. “‘Like 1999’ happened on the second night [of this trip] and totally by accident. We were doing a sad, kind of breakup song, and we weren’t really feeling it. So Johnathan was like ‘Let’s set a 30 minute timer and write a whole new thing’, and then “1999” was born… It happened super organically.”Inspired by the throwback vibes of “Like 1999”, we set up a game of “Who’s Most Likely?” with the band, and found out that not only are they incredible musicians, but one of them may or may not be able to recreate the “Hit Me Baby One More Time” music video frame-by-frame. If VALLEY is this dynamic over Zoom, we can’t wait to see the energy they bring to the stage with COIN this fall. Check out the full podcast and all of VALLEY’s antics on our new episode of “Music You’re Missing”! You can also find their nostalgic tunes on our Spotify playlist.

Disney has given plenty of work to child actors over the years. Some have gone on to fame and notoriety. Others...have not. Learn about Kurt Russell, Shirley Temple, Britney Spears, and the sad, complicated tale of Peter Pan himself, Bobby Driscoll on Theme Park Time Machine. SOURCES Walt Disney’s last words were “Kurt Russell”, According to Kurt Russell on HuffPost The Psychology of Adolescent Fame on Network 1901 Song of The SouthPeter Pan CNN - Britney is bald! Follow Me Boys Screech Archival JFK Jr. Archival Shirley Temple Archival Adam's Script Oh to be a kid again. No bills, no body aches, no responsibilities. Your whole life ahead of you. Nothing but whimsy and potential. Maybe that is why we are so drawn to the stories of child stars.  For example, Shirley Temple. She made her film debut at the age of three, and before her 10th birthday, was one of the biggest stars in the world. This continued through the 1930s and into her teenage years in the 1940s.  After some TV hosting gigs in the 50s and 60s, Shirley Temple became active in the California Republican Party, and was appointed ambassador to Ghana in the 70s, and ambassador to Czechoslovakia in the 80s, the only woman ever to hold that post.  She served on the board of directors of several organizations, including Bank of America and Disney, and received the Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award and Kennedy Center honors before her death in 2014. Of course - Shirley Temple is a mostly-positive outcome. For every one of those, I can think of many examples of child stars who weren’t so lucky. I think that one of the most important things about being a kid, is the freedom to screw up. And when you get into some kind of hijinks, assuming no one gets hurt and no one destroys any irreplaceable property, the grownups in your life are likely to chalk up your misbehavior to that old cliche... “Kids will be kids!” But what happens when kids DON’T get the chance to be kids?  John F Kennedy, Jr was the first child ever born to an American president-elect, and he was a world famous celebrity pretty much from the moment he entered the world in November 1960. The paparazzi followed him and his equally famous mother around the world, and he never really had a private moment to himself.  The pressures of his public life, failing marriage, and unrealistic expectations created the stress that ultimately led to his fatal plane crash at the age of just 38 in the summer of 1999. Then there’s Dustin Diamond. Starring as Screech on the 90’s smash-hit Saved by The Bell, Diamond was a megastar before he was even a teenager. Dustin couldn’t find sustained work as an actor post-adolescence, and his later life was riddled with substance abuse, domestic violence accusations, prison stints, and of course the requisite starring role in an amateur...um...adult feature. Dustin Diamond passed away this year after a short battle with cancer.  Similar fates awaited Jodie Swetin, AKA Stephanie Tanner on Full House, Danny Bonaduce, AKA Danny Partridge, pretty much all of the child stars on Different Strokes: Todd Bridges, Gary Coleman, and Dana Plato...I think you get the idea. Having given work to countless child stars over the years, it’s not surprising that Disney has made its fair share of contributions to the curse of the child star.  Who’s fallen victim to it? Who’s escaped it, and maybe most importantly of all...what can we do about it?   It’s March 17, 2021. Actor Kurt Russell, a former child star himself turns 70 today. Recently, you may have seen Kurt portraying Ego in Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2. Or possibly starring as the one and only Santa Claus in The Christmas Chronicles. In addition to now being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Kurt Russell has some deep Disney roots. How deep? Let’s point the time machine to December 1966. Burbank, California, just north of Los Angeles. It’s almost Christmas...it’s also Southern California, so of course it’s sunny and delightful outside. But not everyone is feeling the warm LA vibes. At St. Joseph’s Hospital, Walt Disney is near death. On December 15th, just 10 days after his 65th birthday, he’ll succumb to lung cancer, the end result of a lifelong smoking habit. Jump ahead 4 years, and Disney archivist Dave Smith was tasked with documenting everything in Walt’s office, which had remained virtually untouched since his death. On Walt’s desk was a note he intended for his older brother Roy, quite possibly, though we can’t be certain about this, the last correspondence he ever wrote. And among other things on the note was a name...Kurt Russell. What did that note mean? Well, I can’t answer that definitively, because the only person who really knows the answer is the guy who wrote it...and he’s not around anymore. But here’s what we do know. Walt Disney was a big fan of Kurt Russell. In the winter of ‘66, Kurt was a baby-faced 15 year old. Walt’s studio had just released a movie called “Follow Me, Boys”, about a traveling musician-turned-scoutmaster in Depression-era America, with Kurt in a minor role. Walt always had an eye for young talent, and he knew Kurt was talented. The affection was mutual. Kurt said Walt reminded him of his own grandfather-warm, welcoming, and creative.  Once, Walt gave Kurt career advice; Kurt enjoyed acting, but what he really wanted was to be a professional baseball player. Years later, his dad, actor Bing Russell, even owned the independent minor league Portland Mavericks. Walt said he didn’t think it was a great career path.  Kurt...eventually came to the same conclusion. Follow Me, Boys was Kurt’s first Disney film, but it wouldn’t be his last. In fact, he signed a ten year contract with the studio, and even though the live-action Disney movies of the late 60s and early 70s...well...aren’t exactly cinema classics, Kurt Russell quickly became a household name and had no trouble finding work.  In fact, when you look through his list of credits, hardly a year went by that he didn’t star in something. From Jack Burton in Big Trouble in Little China, to Lieutenant Gabriel Cash in Tango & Cash, to Wyatt Earp in Tombstone, Kurt was a bankable, bona fide movie star. Disney recognized his influence on entertainment by making him a Disney Legend in 1998. And it all started with a wholesome slate of Disney movies and, more importantly, a child star. Kids have always featured heavily in Disney’s particular brand of family-friendly entertainment. That tradition goes all the way back to the late 20s. A young Walt Disney produced a series of shorts called The Alice Comedies. These shorts featured the first appearance of Virginia Davis, portraying the real-life Alice. Davis had a 20 year film career before retiring in the late 1940s, raising a family, and becoming a successful realtor in Southern California. When it comes to child stars....people like Kurt Russell, Shirley Temple and Virginia Davis seem to be the exception, and not the rule. Enter Britney Spears. One of the biggest pop stars of the late 20th and early 21st centuries and in fact, the best selling teenage musician of all time. Last year in 2020, Rolling Stone named “Hit Me Baby One More Time” as the greatest debut single ever.  Yep, ever. Like, in the whole history of music. Like Kurt Russell before her, Britney Spears got her start as a Disney star! In this case, as a Mouseketeer alongside some other folks you’ve probably heard of, Justin Timberlake, Ryan Gosling, Cristina Aguilera, and Keri Russell. Then, by the mid to late 2000s, everything seemed to shift. If Britney Spears got any press, it was about her behavior off the stage. The media labeled her wild, erratic, and an unfit mother. Her ongoing struggles with mental health and addiction were pursued and publicized relentlessly. The same media that praised her as “The next Madonna or Debbie Gibson” now seemed to relish her falling to pieces.  It was during this time that Britney’s estate entered a conservatorship, supervised by her father, an arrangement that controversially continues to this day. One of the most talented and promising child and teen stars of all time is now an almost-forty year old woman who has very little control over her own life and finances. And then, in the “definitely a sad story” department of former child stars, there’s Bobby Driscoll. Bobby was born in Iowa in 1937, but when he was just five years old, his family packed up and moved to Los Angeles. Like Roy Disney a few decades earlier, his father was told the warm climate would ease his respiratory problems, in this case, years of working with asbestos. Bobby’s breakout role came later that year in the MGM drama Lost Angel. The roles came quickly, and by the time he was seven, he was under contract with Disney. His first starring role came in Walt’s first feature film in years, the now notorious and maligned Song of the South. His portrayal of Johnny was so well received that he was getting Oscar buzz for the category of Best Juvenile performance...which evidently used to be a thing. Bobby’s Disney star continued to rise in the 50s, when he starred in Walt’s first ever completely live-action film, an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. At the same time, he was giving voice to the absolute embodiment of childhood adventure and whimsy, the one and only Peter Pan. But youth fades quickly, and so does youth stardom. By the time Peter Pan was released in 1953, Bobby was 16 years old. Kind of an iffy time in the life of a child actor. Too old to play kids, not old enough to play adults. His voice was changing, and his face was breaking out so badly that he needed a couple extra layers of makeup anytime he was on screen. It all got to be too much for Disney to cope with. They terminated his contract shortly after the release of Peter Pan, and Bobby Driscoll was officially unemployed. For the first time in more than ten years, Bobby was enrolled in a public high school.  He was bullied relentlessly by his peers. Driscoll turned to drugs, first marijuana, and later heroin. He was arrested for drug possession in 1956, and infamous Hollywood gossip columnist Hedda Hopper predicted it would be the downfall of his career. In an attempt to distance himself from the youthful roles of the past, Bobby began using the screen name “Robert Driscoll”. He found some work in minor TV roles, but nothing like the superstardom he’d known in the early part of the decade.  Hedda Hopper, it turned out, was right. Bobby’s career was over. He continued using drugs, and soon found himself in a combination prison/drug rehab facility. When he was released, he was bitter and resentful for the way he’d been treated his whole life. Bobby moved to New York City and became part of artist Andy Warhol’s circle. He made his final film appearance in a Warhol-produced film called Dirt in 1965. Three years later, two kids playing in an abandoned apartment found his body on a cot, surrounded by beer bottles. While the coroner determined he’d died of heart failure with contributing drug abuse, no one knew who he was. His unclaimed body was buried in an unmarked pauper’s grave.  When his mother went searching for him to reunite him with his terminally ill father, the NYPD finally made a match with his fingerprints on file. His death wasn’t reported publicly until the 25th anniversary re-release of Song of the South in 1971, when reporters learned about his fate while researching the movie’s stars. It’s incredibly sad and ironic that the boy who played Peter Pan...quite literally never got the chance to grow up. So what’s the lesson here? This sounds really saccharine, but my biggest takeaway is just...be kind. Even if they ARE famous, kids need space to be kids.  And we need to be even more mindful of the social and emotional growth that kids need, in an era where you can be famous just by having a popular YouTube channel or TikTok. Famous or not, influencer or not, kids need what we all need. Support, and the knowledge that someone’s in our corner who cares about us, will listen to us, and is on our side. You can accomplish that, right now, with a phone call or a text. That’s a solution we can all be a part of. “I do not miss childhood, but I miss the way I took pleasure in small things, even as greater things crumbled. I could not control the world I was in, could not walk away from things or people or moments that hurt, but I took joy in the things that made me happy.” ― Neil Gaiman, The Ocean at the End of the Lane Theme Park Time Machine is a production of No Midnight Media. http://polaroid41.com/unexpected-music/ Sunday November 15th, 5:17pm. Last February I was in a waiting room, bored, chatting on messenger on my phone. My friend sent me a video clip, ‘Here, while you're waiting.' I rarely watch video clips and this one was three minutes long, but my friend has good taste and I was stuck in a waiting room for the foreseeable future, so I put my headphones in and clicked play. The video opens with a hand stuffing a microphone in the face of an unsuspecting pedestrian and an off-camera voice commanding, “Finish the lyrics ! “Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?...” An invisible host goes from person to person, throwing out different songs and meeting varying degrees of success. He sings Queen to a goth guy wearing satanic horns who just squeals back at him like a pig. He approaches two girls sitting at a sidewalk table at a café and bombards them with “Finish the lyrics! I say boom boom boom, lemme hear ya say wayo!” One girl looks half panicked and the other timidly replies, ‘Wayo?' He laughs and says, “You can do better than that!” He sings it again and the girls shout back together: “WAYO!” Their entire interaction lasts less than 10 seconds and in that time the girls go from confused to skeptical to shyly complying to wholeheartedly singing and laughing. Next there's a guy in a dubious state of sobriety who's eager to please: the host is set to launch into Bohemian Rhapsody, “Finish the lyrics! Mamaaa-” and the guy on the street jumps in with ‘MIA! MAMA MIA!' while the host continues ‘just killed a man…!' Total confusion. The host tries again with different young man who takes Bohemian Rhapsody and absolutely runs with it. The next guy isn't having it though: the host barely has time to say, ‘Finish the lyrics!' when the guy on camera interrupts with, ‘What the fuck are you doing man? I'll finish you in second. Fuck off.' Yikes. But regardless of the response, the host simply cackles and giggles delightedly. Next up he's got a great Yakety Yak Don't Talk Back exchange with a man in an expensive looking coat inside a deli. Then a middle eastern guy gives his all trying to remember the lyrics to ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time.' As I said, the video is three minutes long and I almost hit stop at this point. I've had a laugh but don't feel like I really need to see more. I've got it down. But, I'm in a waiting room, so I let the video play...and I'm so glad I did. The last woman to come on screen is wearing a black turtleneck and a three-quarter length camel colored coat. She's thin, small, serious looking. Her hair is highlighted blonde and blow-dried, her makeup is careful and stylish. She's carrying a coffee and walking in the London Underground. He prompts her with the first few words of ‘Shallow,' the critically acclaimed song from the movie ‘A Star is Born.' The woman hardly stops walking but quietly and beautifully sings back the rest of the line, smiles and goes to continue on her way. For the first time the host drops his delighted cackling and says, “Wow. You're really good. Keep going.” She smiles at him and lets loose, her gorgeous voice reverberating off the white subway tiles. Suddenly a beautiful sound where there was none. ... Here we go, queens, this week, Allen sits down with singer/songwriter/witch Seph Hamilton (@CutieGarland, they/them) to talk about our Child Like Empress: Britney Jean Spears! Seph remembers listening to her with their neighbor before school. Did you know Miss Britney Jean did three albums in three years?! We stan watching her break a sweat to a mid-tempo jam like "Sometimes." Then we briefly compare her to another diva, Sutton Foster (don't @ us!!!) Seph breaks down the iconic "Toxic" music video. She didn't break the mold, she created it. Also, that Diane Sawyer interview was bullying, and Diane knows it! Seph and Allen have both tragically missed seeing Britney live. But luckily she's not going anywhere. We can dive deep into the mythology of her instagram. I mean, come on. To love her is to defend her. Allen dissects the devastatingly beautiful crying-on-the-bathroom-floor scene of Crossroads (written by Shonda Rhimes, and don't you forget it). And Seph discusses their theory on the Pink Power Ranger. Finally, #FreeBritney, the woman cannot vote, and that's the tip of the iceberg. Worship with us!

Three reasons you should listen to this podcast: The issue of patients cycling back and forth between the hospital and skilled nursing facilities near the end of life is common, will ring true to those of you who are clinicians, and has largely been ignored in the literature. It's about a hot off the press article published today in the NEJM. Lynn Flint, Palliative care doc at UCSF in the Division of Geriatrics, first author, and our guest, makes me sing "Hit Me Baby One More Time" by Brittany Spears. This moment is either a new high or a new low for the GeripPal podcast, I can't tell which. You really need to listen to the final seconds when Eric joins in singing, "still believe" in high falsetto.

Themes for recurring characters can bring a great element in to a long-form show. Here are some we put together for Prognosis: Death!.In the last instalment about Prognosis: Death!, Impro Mafia's long form improvised show, we talked about how character themes can contribute to the immersion of a story. Dan from Impro Mafia has been hounding me relentlessly to record a medley of the themes from P:D!. (Well, ok, he's asked me twice. Lay off, man!) I finally got around to it, and just in time, too - the second season of Prognosis: Death! is right around the corner. Some of these character themes were pretty well-formed during the first season. Others were still on their way, especially where I was still getting to know the characters. Here's that medley, along with a breakdown of how it maps to each of Prognosis Death's characters.Listen to Prognosis: Death! Medley or download it from Podbean.comListen to P:D! Theme by Tim Wotherspoon or download it Intro: A piano-only interpretation of Tim Wotherspoon's excellent theme music.Best Damn Doctor: Dr Burton Mangold (played by David Massingham) is the hospital's uberdoctor. Patients rarely die on his watch. And when they do - the drama! Mangold's music is an upbeat triumphant march, very heroic. I must admit borrowing a fair bit from Captain Hammer's opening number in Dr Horrible for this.Meanwhile, At The Nurses' Station: During the show, as one scene finished, the narrator would call the beginning of the next scene, priming it by introducing the characters and the location. The Nurses' Station was a great spot for some of the characters to meet, gossip, and console over impossible relationships, unaware that the latest supernatural threat to St Love is on the rise. The Leggy Avenger: Nurse Lotte Buble (played by Natalie Bochenski) has been with the hospital for a long time. Things never quite go her way, but she soldiers on. Buble has a variety of unusual skills (one of which comes from the audience at the start of the show), including a doorframe repair person and a masked superhero.Buble's theme is mostly upbeat, bittersweet, and resilient.Love Theme: Dr Mangold and Nurse Buble's simmering tension often seems hopeless, as they set their feelings aside to deal with the latest crisis to hit the residents of St Love. This theme, or variations on it, often appeared when Mangold and Buble had the stage to themselves.Faith and Donations: Reverend Thistlewaite (played by Wade Robinson) was the name of a variety of members of the cloth that appeared in different episodes, all with different countries of origin but somehow always named Thistlewaite. Jeremy Thistlewaite. Jeremy Von Thistewaite. Jeremy McThistlewaite. These Thistlewaites seemed to die. A lot. Three Seconds Behind: Dr Ludwig LeStrange (played by Dan Beeston) is the hospital's mortician. He doesn't have very much to do, thanks to Dr Mangold and the low mortality rate at the hospital. Dr LeStrange is introverted and outwardly calm, but hides all manner of emotion and tension. He has awkwardly formed hand gestures; due to a bizarre time travel accident, his fingers are three seconds behind the rest of him. His theme music is sad and discordant. This is the theme music I figured out first. Sadly, I recently discovered that Dr LeStrange's theme works very well as backing to Britney Spears' Hit Me Baby One More Time. Sigh.Hunting for Doilys: Dr Harold Dean (played by Luke Allan) is the hospital adminstrator, and Dr Mangold's arch enemy. Dean schemes to scrimp and save every penny to generate more profit for the hospital. Healthy people aren't profitable, so Mangold's prowess in the operating theatre runs counter to Dean's agenda. Dean is always looking for a way to take Mangold down.Dean's music is a nice counterpoint to Mangold's, similar in tempo and feel, but with a descending minor chord structure vs Mangold's ascending major chord structure. Will Have Ten Cats: Dr Melody Carmichael, Intern (played by Amy Currie) is the youngest staff member at the hospital. She is good-hearted, somewhat naive, and tries to do the right thing. (Well, until the first season finale where, possessed by Satan, she orchestrates the death or downfall of nearly every other character. St Love is a complex place.) Scratch the surface and her ambition to be a great doctor shines through.Melody's music is positive, a little oblivious, and happy.Finale: The finale music, again based on Tim's theme, has a chord progression with a ring of finality and triumph. I avoided the temptation to use it early, and saved it for the very end of the last show of the first season.Sadly some of the cast didn't have recurring theme music. Michael Griffin swung in to support roles for whatever story was on, playing every part imaginable - a giant vampire kitten, a dying psychic child, a mafia enforcer, up to Rick Cocksteady (the one doctor better than Mangold). The director and narrator Greg Rowbotham got on stage for the last show to play the angel Gabriel, sneakily encouraging a fallen Mangold to get back to the hospital and make things right again.Mike has challenged me to come up with theme music for Thistlewaite, and for each of the villians that make an appearance this season. I accept your challenge, Mr Griffin.I'm pleased that the show is returning for a second season at the Brisbane Arts Theatre. For Prognosis: Death! Relapse I'm sharing music duties with Nathan Howard, a fellow improvising musician here in Brisbane. I hope this show is as much fun for him as it is for me!
