“You should reach out to Joni.” I'm reading a text from my step-mom and she is suggesting I contact a dear friend of hers because her focus on Musical Improv can take performances to the next level. I've met Joni and she's fantastic. The challenge is: I'm directing a big Improv show this Friday… and it's already Tuesday. So there's not much time to bring her in.  I'm thinking, “What if introducing music now ends up throwing off the performers or intimidating those who aren't so musically inclined?” I decided to go for it anyway. I invited Joni to our Tuesday evening class so she could be part of our rehearsal and get to know the players before Friday's show.  And I create a game set list that involves everyone–from those highly inclined in Musical Improv to those who have zero experience. I want them all to feel like musical superheroes. After the class is over, my phone starts blowing up with text messages from different students. Everyone loved the addition of Joni and her music. And she had a great time too! Experiences like this are just a reminder that it's good to mix things up sometimes. When you try new things and put yourself even a little out of your comfort zone, you open yourself up to a new story of possibility. And when it comes to music, my special guest Dan Kalisher knows a lot about mixing it up. In this episode of the Storytelling School Podcast, you'll learn how music can impact the story you're telling (whether in a performance or a Talk), as well as get answers to questions such as: Why does music transcend spoken language? And what's one reason why people can feel creatively stuck or like they've hit a roadblock? What you will learn in this episode: How the emotional side of storytelling in front of a live audience differs from that in a studio How location can influence you as a storytelling artist What key aspect can help you keep your creativity well-flowing Who is Dan? Dan Kalisher is a session guitar and pedal steel player, producer, and songwriter based in Los Angeles. He has played all over the world performing and recording with artists such as Noah Cyrus, Grace Potter, Louis Tomlinson, Fitz and the Tantrums, Bea Miller, AJ McClean, Don Felder, Matthew Morrison, JC Chasez, and Jesse McCartney. He has also performed at countless music festivals, with regional orchestras nationwide, and has appeared on several major network morning and late-night television shows.  As an award-winning songwriter and producer, Dan has over 25 placements of original music in network TV and worldwide ad campaigns. Most recently, he contributed over 100 original songs for the Meta Sound Collection.  Links and Resources: @dankalisher on Instagram @dankalisher on TikTok Storytelling School Website @storytellingschool on Instagram @storytellingSchool on Facebook

Growing up, I spent a lot of time with my grandmother, nicknamed Moo. We always had fun; we'd play, make things up, sing songs, write poems… just be creative together. As she gets older, though, and reaches 100 years old, she develops dementia. Sometimes she's with us and other times not. I go over to her house one afternoon, and she's super happy and pleasant and lovely... yet she doesn't know who I am. And I'm her only grandchild! I start to get a little frustrated because I want that connection with Moo again. So I begin to bring up things from our past and ask her if she remembers what we did together. Did she remember rolling down the hill together at La Brea Tar Pits? Or that time we made a crazy salad and water went everywhere? She doesn't. As I grasp for more things, I recall one song she taught me that has two verses. One verse is very slow and methodical, the other goes very, very fast, and they're meant to be sung by two people in tandem. So I start singing the fast verse. And pretty soon without any prodding, Moo starts singing the slow verse. And for that one moment, we connect again, sharing a reality with both of us present that melts my heart. That's the power of music. It can stop time. My special guest today, Laura Hall, has spent a career in music, song, and sound. In this episode of the Storytelling School podcast, she talks about finding your voice in storytelling through her lens of Musical Improv and answers questions like: What drives a scene in an Improv story when it's combined with music--the scene or the song? When can Improv help you with your audience as a speaker or storyteller, (in non-Improv situations)? How does variety make you a better storyteller? And how can you start sharing your stories and ensure that you get helpful feedback? What you will learn in this episode: How music and Improv work together to bring stories to life Why finding and connecting to the truth of your story is vital for audience reception What you can do to change the fear story you're telling yourself before a performance Who is Laura? Laura Hall got her start as an Improv Musician performing with The Second City National Touring Company of Chicago. While in Chicago, she worked with almost every Improv theater in town and used Improv to create original musicals at The Annoyance Theater. She also played in cover and original bands, did solo piano work, played recording sessions, and taught at The Old Town School of Music.  After moving to Los Angeles, Laura studied music for film and television and focused on songwriting and original musicals with Theater-A-Go-Go. She has worked with several Improv groups worldwide such as Second City Hollywood, iO West, and others, and taught Music Improv extensively with her husband Rick Hall. Laura performed on every season of the American version of Whose Line Is It Anyway? with hosts Clive Anderson, Drew Carey, and Aisha Tyler. She's also toured extensively with Drew Carey and the Improv All Stars, including performances at Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall and a USO tour of the Middle East. In addition, she's performed with Whose Line Live at the Adelphi, the Palladium, and Royal Albert Hall theatres in London. You can find out more about Laura on her website. CHARNA HALPERNCharna Halpern (born June 1, 1952) is founded the ImprovOlympic, now known as iO. Upon iO's founding, in 1983, with partner Del Close, she began teaching Harold to many students in the Chicago theater community. Many prominent comedians performed at iO, from Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Mike Myers, She and Close co-authored the book Truth in Comedy: The Manual of Improvisation with editor Kim "Howard" Johnson in 1994.She published Group Improvisation in 2003 and Art by Committee in 2006.The remaining theater in Chicago, originally located in the Wrigleyville neighborhood was forced to relocate due to neighborhood development. In 2017, the theater reopened in the Clyborn North Area. In 2020 during a forced shutdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic Charna decided to close theater and sell it. iO was then purchased and as of 2022 has reopened with new management. DEL CLOSEDel Close, an actor, improviser, and coach who taught John Belushi, Gilda Radner and Bill Murray and elevated improvisation to an art form.Close pioneered the concept of “long form” improvisation. “Long form is one suggestion and then you improvise for 25 minutes, and in short form you are constantly coming to the audience for suggestions throughout the evening and treating each improv game as its own little three- or four-minute piece,”While many comedy groups use improvisation as a tool to develop characters and sketches, Close believed that improvisation was the show. He often said there was really only one role for a director: “Light fuse and run!”His ideas, although hotly debated in the comedy world, have influenced nearly every improvisation group in America, from Chicago's legendary Second City to San Francisco's the Committee. “He was the singular most powerful force in improvisation in the world,” said Kelly Leonard, the producer of Second City, where Close acted and directed before opening his own theater. iO with Charna HalpernThe resident guru at “Saturday Night Live” during the show's early years, Close trained several generations of comics, from Belushi and Murray to Mike Myers and the late Chris Farley. Close came up with the idea for the popular early 1980s television show “SCTV,” which stood for Second City Television and was widely credited as the intellectual and spiritual force behind a recent renaissance in Chicago's hotbed of improvisation.Although groups such as Second City use improvisation as a rehearsal tool to develop characters and sketches, Close believed in improvisation as an end in itself. In collaboration with Halpern, he was constantly tinkering with the form, turning the Harold into a more elaborate tapestry of scenes with a cinematic flavor. The ImprovOlympic became the cutting-edge training ground, sending many of its graduates, such as Farley, to better-known venues like Second City and television and movie careers.STORYTELLERCharna HalpernBAND(Piano) Dave Asher(Guitar) Ross Plunkett(Drums) Mike Amandes (Saxophone) Eli V Wilson(Trumpet, Vocals) Ivan Pyzow (Bass) GordonVOCALISTS Matt GriffoDrake ShraderAmber LindeLisa Burton Joe BillSupport the showSupport the show via Matt Griffo's Patreon page at Patreon.com/mattgriffo

Douglas Widick, hysterical actor, music producer and improviser, joins me in the diner this week! Fun fact, he created the theme song for Diner Talks with James and he and I are the co-owners of the internationally known hip-hop improv comedy team, North Coast. We kicked off our convo discussing the beginnings of our friendship, North Coast, and, naturally, Doug’s diner prowess. We then talked about the delicate dance that is being great friends who go into business together. I then switched gears and wanted to ask Doug about his impressive and unrelenting work ethic and what drives it. We touched on the societal responsibility of coming from more than enough and then got a little bit cerebral and discussed using humor as a defense and survival mechanism. Then we got deliciously deep when Doug Widick and I jumped into our deepest fears. We finished our hysterical chat with some wisdom. Doug discussed the importance of enjoying the journey on the way to your goals and the interplay between side hustles and the main dream. This episode had some gem’s y’all. Enjoy! About the Guest:  Douglas Widick is a founding member of Hip-Hop Improv group, North Coast, which was named one of Timeout NY’s Top 10 Comedy Shows of 2014. You can catch him performing around NYC with many other musical improv, improv, and sketch groups as well. He is a member of house Musical Improv teams at both the Magnet and PIT Theaters, and just finished sketch shows with Pop Roulette (PIT), The 2017 Tony Awards (UCB), Dead Dads Club (UCB). He also performs with UCB Theater NY Maude Sketch Team Dangerous Woman. Doug teaches an 8-week Hip-Hop Improv class at the Magnet Theater, and was recently seen in the Off-Broadway musicals, F#%king Up Everything and Blank! Here's a somewhat stuffy bio of me:   I am an author, professional speaker, coach, host, and entrepreneur. My first book, Leading Imperfectly: The value of being authentic for leaders, professionals, and human beings, is available wherever people buy books. I speak internationally to willing and unwilling attendees about authenticity, vulnerability, and leadership. My clients include American Express, General Electric (GE), Accenture, Yale University, The Ohio State University, and many others. As a speaker, I am doing the two things I loves the most: making people think and making people laugh!  I host my own events multiple times a year. They are 2-day events called Living Imperfectly Live (and sometimes they are 1-day virtual events). They are a space where humans from every walk of life can come together to be part of a community on the pursuit of badassery. The goal is to help attendees start living the life we say we want to live. Alas, you're here because of an idea I had a number of years ago and didn't think I was good enough to pull it off. I finally acted on it and alas Diner Talks with James was born! As you can see from what I do in my professional life, Diner Talks is alligned with everything I believe in and teach. If this wasn't dry enough, and you would like to know more info about my speaking, events, or coaching feel free to check out my website: JamesTRobo.com. The event also interfered with a United States Coast Guard search for two boaters who were later found drowned. In consequence, the organizers and the city faced lawsuits seeking millions of dollars in damages, and cost overruns put the event at a net loss.Listen to the unedited podcast at and help support the episodes at --> https://www.patreon.com/posts/unedited-full-86-32044367

Globally recognized for his Stella Artois Superbowl commercial starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Jeff Bridges,  Andrew Pifko, the award-winning actor and comedian is no stranger to Hollywood and has a comprehensive body of work in film, theater and voice. With countless series and guest appearances under his belt in both comedy and drama, the classically trained actor has his sights set on becoming a household name.  On the big screen, Pifko will be disrupting audiences playing the title role in the acclaimed drama DADDY ISSUES premiering April 19th in cities across North America (will also be available on iTunes). The film centers around Maya (Madison Lawlor), a queer pixie artist who meets and falls madly in love with her insta-crush, Jasmine. It's all gumdrops and fairytales until Maya discovers Jasmine's passionate relationship with a secret sugar daddy Simon Craw (Andrew Pifko). For his role, Andrew was nominated for “Best Lead Actor” at the Nice, France International Film Festival and won in the same category at the NoVa Film Festival in Virginia. On the small screen, Andrew will have a recurring role in as a swashbuckling Robin Hood-esque bandit in BYUtv’s ‘Dwight In Shining Armor’ airing Monday nights and will be heard as a series regular, voicing multiple characters, on Netflix’s ‘Carmen Sandiego’ alongside Jane the Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez.  He also recently wrapped ‘Greek Gods’, with comedy icon Mel Brooks, taking an acerbically comic look at the immigration debate.  When he’s not on set,  Andrew can be seen singing and performing as the lead in Second City Hollywood’s production of ‘More Guns: The NRA Musical’ (now extended until August 2019) every Saturday evening at 8:30pm at Second City Hollywood. https://www.secondcity.com/shows/hollywood/more-guns/ Pifko also often performs with the music and rap improv group ‘Kaboombox’ and ‘Robot Teammate and the Accidental Party.’ This Canadian native holds an Honors degree in Zoology and Microbiology from the University of Toronto and is a graduate LAMDA, U.K. post-grad classical program. As an extension of his pre-med studies, Andrew gained certifications in Research, Night and Rescue Scuba Diver on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. He also spent a year in both Japan and Israel teaching English before eventually becoming an actor and graduating from the Upright Citizen Brigade’s Improv and Musical Improv programs. This modern-day renaissance man also enjoys riding his motorcycle and getting his hands dirty, having just completed a 2-year renovation of a classic 1929 Hollywood Hills home to bring it back to its former stature. To no surprise, his many voice over projects and travels have led him to master many languages including German, Japanese, French and Hebrew. Andy’s television credits include David Fincher’s “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” “Criminal Minds,” “NCIS:LA,” “The Big C,” “ANT Farm,” “The Mentalist,” “Playmakers,” “Queer As Folk,” and as a notably darker ‘Walt Disney’ in Screen Junkie’s “Roast of Beauty and the Beast”. Also a voiceover actor, Pifko has voiced the playable character Aldo Trapani in the video game The Godfather: The Game, based on The Godfather film and has worked with the signature voice of the Sundance Channel and National Geographic Wild. A jack of all trades, Pifko’s writing/directing projects include “Game of Thrones Divorce”, “Good Morning” and, “Kim Davis: Songs From My Heart,” a commercial he performed/wrote with “America’s Got Talent” music director Scott Simons. On stage, he wxas most recently seen in the LA premiere of Sarah Ruhl’s ‘In the Next Room’ and has performed as ‘Banquo’ in Macbeth (Roust – NYC), ‘Mercutio’ in Romeo & Juliet (Resurgence – Toronto), I Love You, You’re Perfect…Now Change (Follows/L --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Dumb Nerds: Comedians Talking About Smart Topics They're Too Dumb For

Tacos! Who doesn’t love tacos? Who also doesn’t love getting off topic and talking about music, whether people on death row get to drink alcohol with their last meal and finding that special someone to eat tacos with? Wonderful guest and friend Marcella Riley (“White People Do Black Things” podcast) comes on to talk about her love of LA tacos and gives hot tips on where to get some good eats! Cassi and Marcella have been friends for a few years now and this is a classic fly on the wall conversation of what these two talk about off the mic. That’s right, John Mayer gets brought up, there’s an undertone of darkness and they’d be dancing while podcasting if they could. Enjoy!   See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Von Decarlo is a singer, actress, TV personality, author, mother. Von and I are both from Clairton, PA, a small town outside of Pittsburgh. We were also in the high school band together. I was the drum major and she played clarinet. Von is one of the Relationship Experts and Comedians on Centric TV’s new relationship series According To Him + Her as well as in her very own Centric spin-off digital Instagram series, Coach Von’s Playbook. You can also find her performing live at various New York City comedy and improv clubs with her Musical Improv group Good Catch Comedy. She's currently working on her one woman show Lasagna and will release her first book Speak Fluent Man – The Top Things Women Should Consider Before Blaming the Man in 2015. Von was engaged to comedian Patrice O'Neal and was planning to marry him a month before his untimely death in 2011. In the podcast introduction, I reference that they were married based on our discussion.
