In this podcast interview, I had the pleasure of speaking with Jan Cavelle, a seasoned entrepreneur from the UK with a wealth of experience in running micro and small businesses. She is the author of two books, "Scale for Success" and "Start for Success," aimed at helping aspiring and growing entrepreneurs. She has also contributed an article as a guest author to my new collection of essays. We discussed the common issue of small businesses wasting time and money on marketing. Jan emphasized the importance of skepticism when dealing with marketing offers and recognizing that there are countless get-rich-quick schemes that prey on business owners' fears. She suggested thoroughly researching any potential marketing supplier and not being swayed by fear-based sales tactics. One key takeaway was to measure results accurately to determine the effectiveness of different marketing strategies. Jane's insights are incredibly valuable for small business owners looking to manage their marketing efforts efficiently and avoid unnecessary costs.

In this episode, Elzie interviews Jan Cavelle, an UK-based author who enjoys helping out other entrepreneurs, through writing, speaking, and mentoring. Jan believes that a healthy economy comes from supporting start-ups and scale-ups. She has written a book called Scale For Success and is releasing another one called Start for Success: The Entrepreneur's Guide to Start-ups.They talk about the importance of resilience and empathy for salespeople and how being self-motivated and doing research are key to success. It is also important to build relationships with clients and understand their needs to provide them with what they want or need. They discuss personal mastery and how Jan is able to take the concept of perseverance and turn it into action. When asked about the mental challenges faced by entrepreneurs, Jan says that it is incredibly hard and that salespeople often fall into the trap of becoming addicted to sales results. Listen to learn about the importance of investing in training quality people as a business grows and why leaders should do what is best for businesses, even if it means making tough decisions.Episode Highlights3:50 - You have to make yourself do lots of research and really get the data on your client, and get to know them, so you don't waste your pitching. But also I think these days, you're not talking about the sort of selling that used to go on of, "Hey, look at my product. I'm wonderful." You're looking at actually communicating with people, having empathy with the pain points or their desires, whichever it is, but relation to their emotions and that takes empathy.12:55 - When you're on your own, I think just having that discipline in the numbers game is probably enough, but you have to also look at the result's side. It's no use making ten large calls every single day and never getting a sale. You have to check the metrics of the quality of results you're getting. If it's not working, you've got to work out why and reassess but keeping going will get you there.21:09 - I think I didn't invest in the right quality people. There comes a time when you grow that you need some people who ideally are better than you, who are going to drive the business forward. I had people who'd been working for me and I thought, "They're lovely people. They've been here since the beginning." 28:15 - One of the biggest and most important things for any entrepreneur is self-development. If you don't actually prioritize yourself and develop your skills, protect your mental health, become more and more of a leader everyday. Founder is not a leader, or very rarely, and certainly a first time founder has an awful long way to go to turn themselves into a visionary leader. Elzie and Jan Cavelle discuss the importance of thought leadership, personal mastery, and storytelling in relation to business. Jan highlights the importance of self-development for any entrepreneur, emphasizing that it takes time, devotion, effort, sacrifice and dedication to become a visionary leader. She also points out the necessity of prioritizing oneself and protecting one's mental health to succeed in business. Jan's advice is invaluable for entrepreneurs looking to improve their skills and develop professionally."Founders oftentimes don't start off as visionary leaders" is an insightful quote for entrepreneurs. Jan Cavelle's response further expands on this idea, offering that people start businesses for many different reasons, and that even a great idea doesn't always equate to being a leader. To be successful, entrepreneurs must become visionary and be able to effectively sell why their business exists. This is a professional reminder that starting a business does not necessarily make one a leader and that additional effort is needed to become one.Episode Highlights00:43 - One of the biggest and most important things for any entrepreneur is self-development. They emphasize the need for leaders to do what is best for the business, even if it means making tough decisions. They also talk about the difficulties of growing a business and needing to let go of employees who were with the company from the beginning, how hard it is to have that conversation, and what would need to be done for it to happen smoothly.Having leaders who are knowledgeable and invested in their employees' well-being will ensure that they put their best foot forward into any project they may undertake. Besides setting an example, these leaders should communicate effectively with their staff so that everyone feels heard and valued. Furthermore, providing employees with appropriate resources like technology or well-structured learning opportunities can help drive success within a company. It is also important to build relationships with clients and understand their needs in order to provide them with what they want and/or need. They also discuss the importance of listening, drawing out information from potential clients, and building relationships.Being a good salesperson is about more than just being persuasive. On this episode of ScaleUp Radio, I've gone back into the archives to look again at one of the great guests that we had.    The respected author, speaker and expert on the subject of scaling up Jan Cavelle appeared on ScaleUp Radio.   She is someone who definitely speaks from a place of experience, having run and scaled up a furniture business which started as purely a sales business - but ended up with 2 factories and 40 employees.   The conversation is, without doubt, the most value-filled one that we've ever done on ScaleUp Radio. If you're someone who is looking to scale up your business, there is so much in this episode for you.   Amongst the subjects we cover are:    - The importance of focus to the scaling up of your business. You need to be committed to it.   - What is the difference between growth and scaling up? Aren't they just two sides of the same coin?  - The benefit of putting a system for scaling up in place - and understanding that a system is only a part of the solution.  -  The power of the phrase ‘Hire Slow, Fire Fast' and how that can fit into the culture of your business   These are really just the brief highlights. There is so much covered in this episode, and it was great to have someone like Jan sharing her expertise and knowledge.   Of course, Jan isn't the only one to write about the process of scaling up your business….     Jan can be found here:   linkedin.com/in/jancavelle   https://jancavelle.co.uk/   Scale For Success by Jan Cavelle - https://www.waterstones.com/book/scale-for-success/jan-cavelle/9781472985552     Links to The Entrepreneurial Scaleup System Amazon   US Print: https://www.amazon.com/dp/173970830X  eBook: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09Y91V4P2    UK Print: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/173970830X  eBook: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09Y91V4P2    France Print: https://www.amazon.fr/dp/173970830X  eBook: https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B09Y91V4P2    Germany Print: https://www.amazon.de/dp/173970830X  eBook: https://www.amazon.de/dp/B09Y91V4P2    Spain Print: https://www.amazon.es/dp/173970830X  eBook: https://www.amazon.es/dp/B09Y91V4P2    Italy Print: https://www.amazon.it/dp/173970830X  eBook: https://www.amazon.it/dp/B09Y91V4P2    Japan Print: https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/173970830X  eBook: https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B09Y91V4P2    Canada Print: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/173970830X  eBook: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B09Y91V4P2    Australia Print: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/173970830X  eBook: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B09Y91V4P2    Netherlands Print: https://www.amazon.nl/dp/173970830X  eBook: https://www.amazon.nl/dp/B09Y91V4P2    Brazil eBook: https://www.amazon.com.br/dp/B09Y91V4P2   Mexico eBook: https://www.amazon.com.mx/dp/B09Y91V4P2   India eBook: https://www.amazon.in/dp/B09Y91V4P2         Independent Retailers   Waterstones (UK): https://www.waterstones.com/book/the-entrepreneurial-scaleup-system/kevin-brent/9781739708306    The Book Depository (UK): https://www.bookdepository.com/Entrepreneurial-ScaleUp-System-Kevin-Brent/9781739708306?ref=grid-view&qid=1650717014841&sr=1-1    Foyles (UK): https://www.foyles.co.uk/witem/business/the-entrepreneurial-scaleup-system-how,kevin-brent-9781739708306    Blackwell's (UK): https://blackwells.co.uk/bookshop/product/The-Entrepreneurial-ScaleUp-System-by-Kevin-Brent/9781739708306    Barnes & Noble (US): https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-entrepreneurial-scaleup-system-kevin-brent/1141346521?ean=9781739708306    Walmart (US): https://www.walmart.com/ip/The-Entrepreneurial-ScaleUp-System-How-to-overcome-the-challenges-of-achieving-7-figure-business-success-and-beyond-Paperback-9781739708306/830103510    Booktopia (Austratlia): https://www.booktopia.com.au/the-entrepreneurial-scaleup-system-kevin-brent/book/9781739708306.html

KEY TAKEAWAYS Sales are mostly seen as a bad thing. However, sales perspectives have been changed. It is no anymore only “selling something”. No more forcing the customer to buy something. It is now based on solving the customers' problems and having a business partner relationship. Based on mutual trust and benefits, sales should be seen as a collaboration. BEST MOMENTS “Only thing you need to know is whether you have gotten something for answering customers' pain points.” “There has been always a competition between sales and marketing. There is a much bigger role for marketing to play for a lot of businesses.” “It is really personality and human relationship in the end.” “More than sales, sales is a collaboration. It should be mutually beneficial. Totally collaborative.” “For developing sales channels, you should talk to your top 5 customers and find out the channels they use and go on from that. Monitor and measure.” “People's needs are different in different countries. What works, and what communication styles work are always things that you are not going to find in a book anywhere.”  “It starts with mindset. Also, you are going to be flexible with your approach. Different people from different cultures.” ABOUT THE HOST Levent Yildizgoren, the author of 'Good Business in any Language', is an award-winning entrepreneur, localisation professional, and a PRINCE2 qualified project manager. The entrepreneurial journey is rarely a straight-forward easy one. Often it will take many twists and turns, and throw up all kinds of challenges and surprises. But isn't that what life is all about? Surely, taking a business from zero to millions is more exciting than just doing a job! Some people may be put off by the risk, but the truth is that the greatest risk of all, is taking no risk. The safe option is actually rarely safe. In this episode I spoke with Jan Cavelle about her entrepreneurial journey and the challenges she faced. Jan is an entrepreneur from the UK who has a few decades of running micro and small businesses behind her. She is passionate about supporting people to start and grow businesses. She is very familiar with all the challenges that go with that, having started one from the kitchen table when her children were small, and she was a single mother, to go on to build that into a multi-million turnover business. Jan has put her entrepreneurial experiences together with her passion for writing together a book aimed at helping entrepreneurs to grow their businesses during the big leap of £1-£10m. The book is called Scale For Success, and it is being published by Bloomsbury. The UK publishing date is 4th February 2021, but she continues to encourage start-ups as well as scale ups.

Joining the podcast from Babraham in the UK, freelance writer and author Jan Cavelle joins this week’s instalment. As an author, Jan specifically focusses on avoiding the growth pitfalls, something she writes about from personal experience. Jan originally started writing concerning the realities and truths of running a business as an entrepreneur back in 2008. Since then, she has written articles for countless publications, spreading her wisdom, knowledge and latest trends all things entrepreneurial.Jan strives to help entrepreneurs scale their businesses, providing advice from what she has learned from experts, and her own successes and difficulties. Her first book, Scale For Success, can be pre-ordered here, and more of her articles can be found on her website. For Jan, strategy is a hugely important issue. She has found many people focus too much on growth.Jan advocates that if you try to grow without strategy, you have none of the frameworks in place to sustain that growth, most importantly the people. With all her research for her book, Jan found people to be the most common denominator. You don’t have to just plan ahead, you have to find the right people to have in place ahead of the growth, and this order is essential for sustained growth.

The My Future Business™ Show

Interview With Jan Cavelle Scale For Success #Author #ScaleForSuccess #JanCavelle Hi, and welcome to the show! On today's My Future Business Show I have the pleasure of talking with writer, speaker and author of ‘Scale for Success' Jan Cavelle talking about why so many businesses fail to cross the bridge between $1million and $10million, and some of the strategies successful business owners use to break through this barrier. Jan is an entrepreneur from the UK who has a few decades experience running micro and small businesses. She is very familiar with all the challenges that go with this environment, having started her own business from her kitchen table as a single mother with two young children. In overcoming many different obstacles, Jan went on to build her own multi-million turnover business. For context, Jan became ‘stuck' with her business, and when she retired, she decided to write a book about this experience. In turn, Jan set out to find the answers by calling on the help of 30 experts and entrepreneurs across the globe who have broken through this barrier and succeeded. Like most entrepreneurs, Jan has experienced failure and success; and has always been there to help, encourage and support other entrepreneurs through tough times. In fact, Jan was chosen as one of the first 50 women to represent the UK in the European Union. By combining her entrepreneurial experiences with her passion for writing and helping others, Jan has written a book called ‘Scale for Success' that helps entrepreneurs grow their businesses during the big leap of $1 million to $10 million. Jan Cavelle ran her own furniture company in England for 19 years before giving it up. She now shares her insight and expertise with the world through writing and speaking. Her book, Scale for Success, is forthcoming from Bloomsbury in February.  Jan grew up on a farm and took a series of sales jobs. Once she became a single mom, she was motivated to earn enough to support her family. She tried her hand at buying and selling wares to interior designers. When she found she couldn't obtain what the market was demanding, she took out a loan to start a furniture company.  Jan talks about the tough times she went through that almost broke her -- something a lot of entrepreneurs go through but rarely talk about. After some years, she became burned out, and eventually decided to leave the business that was no longer satisfying her desire to live with purpose. She found that she loved writing, so much so that she faced her fears of being an imposter to publish her writing online and eventually land a book contract to write about the entrepreneurial journey.  Scale for Success shares insights and stories from her own journey as well as that of other entrepreneurs across the globe.  Now let's get better together. Actions to Try or Advice to Take No matter what your goal is, learn how to sell. It's an essential skill whether or not you want to be an entrepreneur. And if you're an entrepreneur, learning your customers' struggles is imperative.  Most entrepreneurs need a purpose other than making money. When Cavelle realized she needed something more to motivate her, she made the leap to leave her business.  Be a risk-taker.  Cavelle shares that she started her business on credit “with a loan advertised from the back of a Sunday paper” and later, when she wanted to write a book, she called Bloomsbury – and they said yes.  Links to Explore Further Jan Cavelle's Website Information about Jan's forthcoming book, Scale for Success: Expert Insight Into Growing Your Business Jan Cavelle on LinkedIn Jan on Matchermaker.fm Keep In TouchBook or Blog or Twitter or LinkedIn or JSYPR or Story Funnel Learn more about your ad choices. KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE: The moment you lose your passion, get out. If you don't truly care about what you're doing, everything will slowly fall apart. Find people who are equally as passionate as you with whom to work. Sales is the backbone of every business but it's not the only thing to focus on. Leads are very important in every business. Go out of your comfort zone and make connections. Don't be afraid to ask for help especially from people who you know can help you. When you are growing a business, you need to accept that you need to work on yourself as well. Make sure that you are in a good place mentally and physically. Never put yourself last. Being a woman in a male-dominated business is hard but not impossible. TODAY'S GUEST Jan Cavelle is one of the first 50 Female Entrepreneurial Ambassadors to represent the UK in Europe. Her early career included recruitment, catering, and setting up a sandwich delivery service. After her marriage ended, she decided to start a furniture business from her kitchen table which grew to become one of the UK's most successful boutique furniture manufacturers, before things turned sour. Gold Nuggets in this Episode: Juliet took their puppy for a walk at 4:30am. She thinks the puppy had mixed feelings about that. “A lot of people don't always share the tough moments; they kind of gloss over it and say ‘it was a struggle in the beginning, but look at where I am now.'” “Entrepreneurs need to hear that it's not all perfect, and it's not this front that you see on the news or on social media; that there is so much struggle behind it to get them there.” “I'm all for encouraging entrepreneurship. I think there will be a great need for more and more over the coming years. But I don't think it's doing anybody a good service to tell them that it's all fun and games.” “Validating an idea is a plain sensible thing to do.” “People get on their high horse that they have this idea and therefore other people must buy it. They're missing the whole idea that it's a problem that they need to address and find that people want solved.” “In this day and age, there's a good argument for starting a business as a side hustle.” “You are not your business. You should not measure yourself by the success of your business. That is a tough lesson to learn.” “Don't be afraid of learning, because sooner or later you're going to have to.” “If you're going to grow a business, you want to be very sure that your reason behind it is good, and that you are mentally fit enough to do it.” “Fearlessness is not the absence of fear. It's the mastery of fear. It's about getting up one more time than we fall down.” – Arianna Huffington Our guest is author, writer, and speaker, Jan Cavelle. Most founders have experienced failure, or will do so at some point in their journey. As Samuel Beckett wrote in Westward Ho: “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” Currently around 60% of new businesses fail within their first few years and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic is likely to send business failure rates sky rocketing.  Jan Cavelle built a multimillion pound business from absolutely nothing. She also lost it all when her furniture went into administration in 2017 after 20 years of trading. But she has rebuilt her portfolio and now back on the road to success.
