Johnny and I entered the Mount together in 2003. He was an excellent lacrosse goalie and one of the more laid back guys I went to school with. It was an absolutely honor and pleasure to interview JRod. We took a stroll down memory lane during our time at The Mount, his journey through college lacrosse and hockey, and his prolific career as a Major League Lacrosse goalie in Atlanta. JRod opens up about his decade long stint as Mater Dei's head lacrosse coach and winding down coaching after his ALS diagnosis last fall that he continues to battle mightily every single day.

Urbano Esquivel (seated) celebrates his 100th birthday Aug. 15 with family from San Antonio at the Frank M. Tejeda Texas State Veterans Home in Floresville. Esquivel, an eight-year resident of the veterans home, previously lived in Crystal City. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II as a truck driver and a cook. Bluegrass award-winner Rhonda Vincent began her professional music career at the age of five, playing drums with her family's band, the Sally Mountain Show. She picked up the mandolin at eight and the fiddle at ten, performing with the family band at festivals on weekends. Rhonda struck out on her own, singing with Grand Ole Opry star, Jim Ed Brown. Her opportunity eventually led to a deal with Rebel Records. Her work caught the attention of Giant Nashville's president, James Stroud, who signed Vincent to record two contemporary country albums. After Giant, she signed with Rounder Records where her passion for traditional bluegrass music flourished. She made her label debut in 2000 with Back Home Again, recorded with her band, The Rage. She showcases her hard-driving, high-energy contemporary bluegrass on The Storm Still Rages in 2001, One Step Ahead in 2003, Ragin' Live in 2005, All American Bluegrass Girl in 2006, and Good Thing Going in 2008. This week we welcome Matt Gumm and Bobby Marquez! Matt Gumm literally grew up around variety shows at Lake of the Ozarks, so at the age of 30, he takes to the stage like a seasoned pro. Of course, growing up with Thom "Gabby" Gumm as your dad & mentor didn't hurt. In fact, he learned so well, Matt was added to the Main Street Opry act at the age of seven. Long before that, though, he seemed to know what he was going to do with his life. His mom Sandy will tell you that he spent everyday up on his bed, with a make-shift curtain that hung from the ceiling, with wigs and props doing his "show". It was in these very early years that a family friend thought it would be "funny" to buy Matt a toy set of drums. Well, the joke was on him, because Matt started playing those things and he was a natural! All that practice may have been painful at times for the family, but it definitely paid off. While in High School, Matt was the only student chosen out of his class to attend the Missouri Fine Arts Academy because he excelled in Music, Art & Drama. Fresh out of high school, Matt spent 5 years developing his own reputation as a gifted comedian and musician on the stage of the long-running Lee Mace's Ozark Opry in Osage Beach, Missouri. Once again, his family ties drew him back to work along side his dad and mom at the Main Street Opry in Osage Beach. There he honed not only his comedy skills with his dad, but he came into his own with his impersonations. He's brought the house down with his take on such artists as Garth Brooks, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Tony Bennett, Rod Stewart & Sammy Davis, Jr., just to mention a few. From custom graphics and mysterious websites, to the full-scale street murals that have suddenly appeared in places like London and Hollywood. His pieces often serve as standalone artworks in addition to the role they play as storytelling vehicles for 42's various projects. Johnny leads a diverse team of visual designers who are responsible for all online, print, event, media, mobile, environmental and collectible graphic design. Prior to 42, Johnny was part of the original team at Disney Online in 1995, designing kid-friendly Web sites as well as sites for Hollywood Records' rock and R&B artists. He left Disney for Pittard Sullivan, the award-winning LA design shop, where he led design efforts for Fox Family and the Military Channel. In this week's episode we're featuring a 1977 album from the clear and resonant vocal of Rose Maddox: "Reckless Love & Bold Adventure". A suitably colourful title for Rose, whose roots in performing came as part of The Most Colourful Hillbilly Band In America: The Maddox Brothers & Rose. After plenty of West Coast success with her brothers, in 1958 Rose Maddox went solo and over the next few years on Capitol enjoyed a good number of hit singles including several with Buck Owens. Maddox also recorded one of the first female-led bluegrass albums in 1962 - and it was indeed the bluegrass and folk communities where she found a musical home as her country music star waned into the 1970s. Bluegrass influence permeates much of our feature album: with fiddle from the legendary Byron Berline and his longtime associate John Hickman on banjo, Maddox teamed up with good friend Wayne Gailey on pedal steel and the combination is electric. Highlights include an excellent fiddle-and-steel cover of Johnny Rodriguez's "Pass Me By (If You're Only Passing Through)"; an excellent re-recording of a 4-Star hit for The Maddox Brothers & Rose in "Gathering Flowers For The Master's Bouquet" and the autobiographical "Heart Of A Country Song (Rose's Song)" where Rose gives a shoutout to Gailey on steel guitar. Overlooked but solid material.

Before he retired in the early 2000s, Bob McDill landed 152 hits on the Billboard country chart, more than any other songwriter in history. He hit theBillboard Top 10 an astounding 55 times, and 23 of those singles climbed all the way to #1. He has also written charting singles for Jerry Lee Lewis, Charley Pride, Tammy Wynette, and both Duke Boys, Tom Wopat and John Schneider, with the latter taking Bob’s “I’ve Been Around Enough to Know” to #1. McDill was named Country Songwriter of the Year seven times between 1976 and 1994: three times each by the Nashville Songwriters Association and BMI, and once by ASCAP. Nine of his songs were nominated for Song of the Year by the Country Music Association, the Academy of Country Music, or both organizations. The four time Grammy nominee earned ASCAP’s Golden Note Award, received the Academy of Country Music’s prestigious Poet’s Award, and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. 

Tom T. Hall was named by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time. Known as “The Storyteller,” the Grammy winner landed 35 songs in the Top 10 on Billboard’s country chart between 1965 and 1996. Many of those featured Hall as both writer and artist, including “Homecoming,” “Me and Jesus,” “Ravishing Ruby,” “That Song is Driving Me Crazy,” “I Like Beer,” and the #1 hits “A Week in a County Jail,” “The Year That Clayton Delaney Died,” “(Old Dogs, Children and) Watermelon Wine,” “Country Is,” “I Care,” “Faster Horses (The Cowboy and the Poet),” and “I Love,” which also became a hit on the pop chart.   Tom T. Hall songs that hit the Top 5 for other artists include “Hello Vietnam” by Johnny Wright, “How I Got to Memphis” and “(Margie’s at) The Lincoln Park Inn” by Bobby Bare, “If I Ever Fall in Love (With a Honky Tonk Girl)” by Faron Young, “Pool Shark” by Dave Dudley, “You Always Come Back (To Hurting Me)” by Johnny Rodriguez, “I’m Not Ready Yet” by George Jones, “Little Bitty” by Alan Jackson, and “Harper Valley P.T.A.,” which Jeannie C. Riley took to the #1 spot on both the country and pop chart, making her the first woman to achieve that feat.    Hall was named NSAI Songwriter of the Year in 1972, was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1978, joined the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008, was honored with the Academy of Country Music’s Poet’s Award in 2010, and earned the prestigious BMI Icon award in 2012. 

A singer/songwriter who is a voting Grammy member and co-wrote the song “Childhood Sweethearts” with Randy Travis. She toured with Johnny Rodriguez as a kid and worked with some of the biggest names in country music, such as Waylon Jennings, Tom T. Hall, and Mickey Newbury. She grew up in a show biz family and was a child actress and still acts today. She even has a romantic comedy playing on Amazon.
