Behind the historic deal to save the Colorado River

In the western US a landmark deal to protect one of the country's most important waterways has finally been reached. The Colorado River serves more than 40 million Americans across multiple states, but it's drying up at an alarming rate. Drought, overuse, and climate change are largely to blame. In the new deal, the lower basin states, Nevada, California and Arizona, will temporarily cut their water usage. In exchange, they'll get over a billion dollars' worth of federal grants. It's a significant reduction, about 13% of their total demand. But experts are already warning that it's not a long-term fix. Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon joins Bianna to discuss how his upper basin state should also see the benefits of the deal.  Also on today's show: South Carolina Senate Republican Penry Gustafson; national security analyst and journalist Peter Bergen; Kahn Academy founder/CEO Sal Khan To learn more about how CNN protects listener privacy, visit cnn.com/privacy

“It doesn't matter if you're employed or not, it matters if you're employable…if you learn the skills around how to grow ‘capital-efficiently', [affecting] the growth curve in a positive way—that's incredibly employable.” Bill Macaitis is an advisor and board member, guiding aspiring unicorns and helping build out world class teams and innovative go-to-market strategies. Over his 20 year career Bill has achieved five successful exits and powered growth at three of the fastest-ever growing companies: Slack (CRO/CMO), Zendesk (CMO), and Salesforce (SVP of Marketing). He has also held leadership positions at Fox Interactive Media (SVP of Online Marketing) and IGN Entertainment (VP of Marketing). Questions and topics we covered include: When is the right time to transition as a marketing leader from one company to another?  What does it mean to have a “marketing philosophy” as you grow in your career? What does it mean to be an employable marketer? The early challenges a 1st-time marketing leader faces when working at a startup. How can marketing teams infuse a personality into their brand? Finding the right balance between goal setting for various channels? How would you define capital-efficient growth? What does the future CMO look like? What are some common misconceptions around brand marketing? And more! Morgan shared her experience as a study group leader in a general anatomy and psychology course. Topics of our conversation included how she became a study group leader, reasons that the A and P course was challenging for many first-year students, some of the most effective study group session activities and how she uses Kahn Academy videos during her sessions, some of Morgan's personal and professional development outcomes as a result of serving as a study group leader, and concludes with a powerful reflection about her experience in college education. To provide some additional context for our interview, I have included several PDF documents. First, an overview of the institution. Today I work remotely for Khan Academy, a non-profit with the goal of providing "A free world class education for everybody everywhere". A huge number of my Silicon Valley co-workers have left to live somewhere cheaper. The Covid 19 pandemic has accelerated the effect. These are people who can live anywhere they want, and they want a cheap house, good schools, safe neighborhoods, and access to nature and arts. Calgary has all of those things. Please be sure to share this episode with everyone you know. Ep 25 [1/2]: James Feal-Martinez: Discussing MMT through a coronavirus lens (plus story to introduce kids to MMT)

Welcome to episode 25 of activist #MMT. Today I talk with third-year MMT activist and Scotland resident, James Feal-Martinez. James is an electrical engineer with the British Navy, with which he has served for 20 years. In 2018, a serious injury left him homebound for the first time in many years. After binge watching a large amount of movies and television series, he turned to reading philosophy and then economics. Despite having no background in economics, he could tell that neoclassical economists “make some very strange assumptions," resulting in predictions that are wrong “again, again, again, and again.” Worst, those incorrect predictions are scaled up by these same economists to apply to the entire economy, greatly magnifying the errors. James was determined to find economists who interpreted and saw the economy properly, first leading him to New Zealander and fellow engineer, Steve Keen. Although Keen has some important disagreements with Modern Monetary Theory, he is largely in agreement with its core tenets. James and I spend much of our time discussing our own lives and the state of the world under the new normal of the coronavirus health crisis. We talk about how, although internet tools such as Chromebooks, Google Classroom, and Kahn Academy may be less than ideal during normal in-person instruction, they allow schools to function as normally as can be expected during this crisis. They do this by providing regular structure and socialization opportunities for teachers, students, and parents; not to mention a regular paycheck for teachers and the families that depend on them. Like war and climate change, the coronavirus pandemic is truly a crisis for all, which uniquely includes the privileged. The “how are you going to pay for it?“ question is always asked when it relates to something intended to alleviate suffering for the disadvantaged. When it comes to the potential suffering of the privileged during a crisis such as this, the question is cast aside for programs requiring orders of magnitude more spending by central governments. An example brought up by James is how the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer (which is the equivalent of the United States Treasury Secretary) introduced £350 billion pounds of spending for crisis relief. This is on top of the existing budget. The media has not asked how these funds would be “paid for.“ Yet only two months ago, this same media incessantly asked how the Labour Party’s manifesto would be paid for, despite its requiring only around £400 billion in spending over ten years, which is about 11% in comparison (£400 billion over 10 years is $40 billion per year, versus £350 billion pounds in a single year). It is possible that even this is a substantial over estimation regarding the cost of the manifesto. We end by discussing a story I wrote to introduce MMT to kids. The story was partially inspired and encouraged by James late last year, after he read a Twitter tutorial I created on the subject of reserve accounting. I have since presented the story to an eighth grade math class. I tell James about how I have decided to change the beginning of the story, and the insights those changes reveal. Other topics, concepts and resources discussed: Interview with my primary care physician about the basics of the coronavirus diesase and the crisis. Another evil aspect of the UBI is how it would likely hurt exactly those it is intended to help, which will result in necessary complaints. It is likely that the privileged will turn to them and say, "What are you complaining about? You’re getting a check every month." A pizza shop giving out coupons for pizzas. The coupons already out there are anticipated by the shop, meaning the shop has decided that they can (they have prepared to) handle that demand. It would be foolish for them to store those used coupons in a safe, because (first) it’s pointless, and (two) it’s dangerous, because the shop likely does not have the resources to meet that additional demand. The collection of these coupons (in addition to ticket stubs at a movie or sports stadium) implies their destruction. This is analogous to how the collection of federal taxes are destroyed upon the collection by the state (federal government). In the same way a pizza shop does not keep their coupons for future customers, the currency issuer does not store the revenue collected by taxation (or the selling of securities) for future respending. Killer Mike’s inspirational ad for the 2020 Bernie Sanders campaign, demonstrating how the problems in our society are rooted not in race, gender, sexuality, or country of origin; but in class – and more specifically, capital versus labor. "Everyone outside of that 1% has been denied." Before getting to my conversation with James, I’m going to tell you the full kid story. Note that this is normally an interactive conversation, so I am going to insert some common responses that I have received. A story to introduce kids to Modern Monetary Theory When you play Monopoly, what’s the very first thing that happens? You choose a banker, and then what must that banker do? Does he have to go and find people that played the game months ago, in order to get enough money to play with? Or does he just...give out the money? Do movie theaters or sports stadiums give people newly created tickets? Or do they have to first collect old tickets from former patrons? A theater could give every single patron five thousand tickets. They could. No problem. But there are only so many seats in the theater. (This story was inspired by a kid I met who told me he got in trouble for stealing hundreds of dollars from his parents. He did this by taking their credit cards and using them for “in app“ game purchases.) Now... Imagine you have no money. I mean no money. Not in your bank account, not in your wallet, not in your piggy bank. Nothing. You and your entire family are totally broke. Then one morning, you wake up and you are granted the power to create money, whenever you needed it. Just you. You go into a store, find something you want and it’s really expensive. You go to the cashier, stick out your hand, palm up, and – pssssht! Money appears in your hand. Just enough to buy what you want. The only rule is that you’re not allowed to keep it; you can only spend it. You can only give it. The question is: if you had this power, does it really matter that you **have no money**? Of course not. Who cares? You can create it whenever you need it. So what would you do with this power? Your first instinct is probably to spoil yourself. By yourself lots of cool toys, gadgets, and technology. Maybe take all of your friends on a trip to Disney World for a couple of years. How would you use this power to help? Really help. Pay off your mom and dad‘s house and cars. Pay off the credit cards and loans for all your friends and their families. Maybe provide all the kids in your school free lunch and school supplies for a whole year. But why stop there? Your teachers buy lots of school supplies with their own money, so why not help all of them? You could buy a home for every homeless person in the entire town if you wanted. There’s a lot of good things that you could do. Now. How could you use this power to hurt people? (What do you mean, hurt people? How could creating money hurt people???) Well, how about finding the most awful and evil kid in school and giving them $1 billion and nothing to anybody else. How about, early in the morning, you go to the school cafeteria and buy all the food and then throw it in the dumpster? Or all the food at the entire grocery store? How about going to a busy toy store and giving every customer $10 million at the very same time. They would all start fighting because there aren’t enough toys in the store for them to buy! But the worst thing you can do is to take a trip to the city and find the most destitute, desperate homeless person you can. Someone who’s in really bad shape. Talk to him. He tells you he’s been homeless for a long time, living in his broken car with his wife, 10-year-old girl, and little baby boy. They’re always cold, always hungry, his kids have nowhere to play, and when they get sick, they can’t even go to the doctor. You listen to their story and it’s really sad. You even cry a little bit and hug each other. Then you tell him, “I really wish I could help you but I can’t. I don’t have any money. I’m so sorry.“ I mean, you’re not lying. You don’t have any money. But you sure are leaving out something important. Since he doesn’t know that you have this power (and how could he, since you’re the only one in the world who can do it) he’s not angry, just sad and disappointed. He thinks you’re also just sad and disappointed. How do you think he would feel if he realized that you did have this power? #LearnMMT For an overview of Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) with many reliable sources to learn more, here is a good place to start: On the web: My layperson intro with many expert sources listed at the bottom. Supporting ELLs in Math Something magical happened at my school three years ago that opened my eyes to one of the true needs of English Language Learners. Our school piloted a program that was completely unheard of in our school district. I had the honor of being a part of this life changing experience. We took part in the first newcomer program. During the day 50 newcomers in grades 6-8 we a part of sheltered instruction. In our school setting, newcomers had a science, social studies, and an ESL class from an ESL teacher. Math was taught to by grade level math teachers, who had an interest and desire of supporting English Language Learners. During this time I was working with the math teachers I learned some valuable tips that I would like to share with you. There is also a free cheat sheet that goes along with this episode which I will link in the show notes. Use visuals and manipulatives as much as possible with your ELLs in math. Math is a visual subject. I think of formulas and equations when I see visuals. You can use visuals such as diagrams and processes for your ELLs. For example, if a student is learning the process of rounding, create a visual step-by-step process to support the students in this task. In some cases we had students with interrupted education who were learning numbers. The students used visuals to assist in learning how to count. Manipulatives are visual and also increase engagement in the math class. They provide a hands on way to support your ELLs in math. Introduce and pre-teach key vocabulary to students before introducing word problems and new concepts. Just because it is math doesn’t mean that academic vocabulary should not be a focus of the lessons. Just as you would teach key vocabulary in ELA classes. It is important to teach vocabulary in math classes. Students are going to encounter word problems and new math concepts. Teaching them key vocabulary is going to help them with they encounter these concepts and word problems. Teachers can use the Frayer Model for teaching key math concepts. The great thing about the Frayer Model is that it allows for you to include visuals for the students. These visuals can be a sample word problem, equation, or a formula. Math video tutorials are powerful! Think about when you want to learn something new, you might just go to YouTube and click on a topic. There are so many tutorials that provide students with step-by-step instructions on how to learn math concepts. I used them all the time when I was teaching myself and the students a new math concept. The one that is highly recommended is Khan Academy. What makes Kahn Academy a beneficial tool is that it FREE and it aligns directly with the math Common Core Standards. So if whatever math concepts your students are learning there is a high chance there is a step-by-step video on Khan Academy. Kahn Academy is also available in Spanish for first language support Math Interactive Notebooks   I had the pleasure of working with a phenomenal math teacher Mrs. Francesca Hall who is an advocate for English Language Learners. In her classroom she used math interactive notebooks. In the notebooks there was basic numbers, formulas, and tips. Whatever the student was going to learn for that lesson was put into a notebook. It proved to be a valuable resource that the students used throughout their year in math. In these notebooks you can also have the students record examples that include a step-by-step process for completing a problem. This will allow the students to return the notebook if they need help working a problem. In the interactive notebook you can also keep track of those key words that was mentioned above.  If you want a full list of strategies and tips, head over to myadventuresinesl.com/mathstrategies to download the free cheat that accompanies this episode.

There are a number of reasons I decided to start this podcast, but one of the biggest contributing factors was Jason Carriers podcast. As he said at the end of the show, there is such an overlap of values between the homesteading community and the liberty minded community. Today's interview with Jason was certainly an entertaining one. We talked about how he got from suburbia, to horse boarder, to homesteader with his finger in everything. Jason has planted a wide array of orchards, he gardens, he raises bees and chickens, and he recently constructed his own aquaponics system. I hope this interview with Jason can bring you some inspiration and encourage you to get out there and just get started. It is interesting to me that we are releasing this episode on equal pay day. Not because I want to distract from women's equal pay but because it is a common cause (and there are plenty of women in prison earning pennies on the hour). The Shawshank Redemption is not just a great movie, it gets a lot of the details of prison life right. Scenes from the movie were quoted every day in every prison and jail I was in. The article I referred to as "Talk Poverty" was published on many platforms, the point is that the people involved in the system are very aware that they are getting benefit from cheap labor. The never-ending debate over if prison labor is exploitation or a way to fill dead time is discussed in this LA Times article. The article also explains the problem of having too many inmates and too few jobs. There was a recent time when many major companies were using prison labor, many of these companies have stopped using this practice. If you are wondering how exploitative prison labor is legal it is important to remember two things: 1) the 13th exception allows slavery in the case of criminals and 2) prisoners, for that reason, are exempt from the fair labor standards act. We talk a lot about California inmate firefighters, this was the article I read first about the story of Shawna Lynn Jones. Michigan's Vocational Village program has received a great deal of press coverage. There are many primers on paid apprenticeships for prisoners, this is a decent guide from the Center for American Progress. Yes, prisoners can learn next economy skills like programming in prison. I have long imagined a world in which every inmate has access to Kahn Academy-style classes from tablets. Just imagine the difference meaningful educational programming could make in the lives of people shut-off from the economy (often for decades). Articles like this one about soft skills training in women' prisons can help you get a feel for the entire topic of soft skills in prison. You can also learn more about soft skills as a concept in general in this good overview of soft skills training. The Prison Creative Arts Project in Michigan does incredible work, the most recent Exhibition of Prisoner Art just ended. Here is the guide to all 65 recaps that I wrote for the series Orange Is the New Black The reason most Universities don't participate more fully in prison education probably has something to do with the ending of Pell Grants for prisoners.

I don’t remember getting to a point where I felt like I had caught up and could safely do nothing. Even if I get caught up on the immediate needs like housework or work goals, there are always self-improvement or home-improvement projects, things I’ve been wanting to do with my family, career related study, etc. Every day it feels like I wake up behind in the race. That’s not to say I’m always doing something productive. But at the times I’m doing nothing productive, I’m choosing to do nothing over doing something, whether it’s because I’m exhausted or unmotivated or whatever. But I always have to actively decide to be unproductive over all the things I “should” be doing, and that usually comes with guilt. This is not healthy. Anybody have any books or talks or tips on how to change this mindset?” Of course, immediately he started getting responses.   These were not solutions, however, but affirmations that this was not just him, but so many of us that feel the same way.   It’s the allowing that is the flow of the river…and that’s how you get cruising. “I would love to flow like the river flows, carried by the surprise of its own unfolding.” John O’Donahue We have multiple areas of our lives that have to be assessed:   • Work/Finance • Family • Emotional/Spiritual • Personal Development • Physical • Social • Life Tasks   Those “life tasks” at the end are all of the housekeeping to-dos, repairs, errands, day-to-day life requirements that eat up a ton of time and energy.  Everyone dreams of a personal assistant because this one area alone could easily eat up your whole day, every day. So how do we keep from just having that feeling of overwhelm all the time? Six Tips to Eliminate Overwhelm Here are the biggies for me, to ensure you don’t feel behind all the time. 1: Prioritize Recommended Read: The One Thing by Gary Keller  (http://amzn.to/2xrsRSt) Stop multi-tasking and do one thing with excellence. It’s amazing what you can accomplish with that incredible focus   Create Your Priorities – look at what REALLY has to be done. Sometimes, we create a to-do list of so many things, and then we realize that it may not all be necessary. I’ve stressed out looking at a full day of errands, and the more I break it down, realize that there was only ONE of the many things on my to-do list that really needed to be done that day. Breaking it down into bite-size pieces and asking myself, “is it necessary at this moment?” Really helped.    2: Obliterate Obligation Okay, there is a time and place for obligation.  Sometimes going out of your way for someone you love is worth it to see the happiness on their face, even if it’s not your favorite thing.  Some obligation is okay.  But when obligation takes over, you can twist down into a spiral of people-pleasing that is a bottomless pit.  If you start to notice that everything you do all day is based on making someone else happy, it’s time to seriously check yourself.  You are not in charge of anyone else’s happiness – that is their’s to own.  Spread love, fill some buckets, but ensure you are looking at what is critical for you to move forward beyond just meeting everyone else’s needs.  My mother swears by the book “When Pleasing Others is Hurting You” (http://amzn.to/2xyfzJ2) 3: Underpromise, Overdeliver Be careful what you commit to, and ensure you can really follow through.  If you can’t show up on time, don’t say you can.  Don’t accept a project if your plate is already full.  Don’t commit to a deadline that is going to require you to forfeit eating and sleeping to meet it.   “I have a commitment”.  Don’t feel pressure to respond immediately - say “let me check my schedule and get back with you” so you aren’t making a decision under pressure.  It’s okay to say no - provide another resource so it’s not just no, but you offer a solution.   4: Wiggle Room Allow for wiggle room.  Don’t overcommit your day so there is no down time.  We all need rest and we need time to create, process, and think.  Don’t jam pack your day where it’s a marathon.  That is a sure-fire way to create burnout.  Don’t live for that one day when you can rest again.  Intentionally allow that down time every day so you aren’t running on fumes. On that whole “productive” concept.  Let me get one thing straight: Rest IS productive.   Don’t negate your down time. It’s critical to your health, both mentally and physically.  Give yourself grace to veg.   Recommended Read: Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert (http://amzn.to/2yy1Lhx)   Give your creativity a name and spend time with it.  Invite it into your life, and sit with it every day. Creating a Haven of Peace: When Your Feeling Down, Finances Are Flat, and Tempers Are Rising by Joanne Miller (http://amzn.to/2xpQyzv) This is Ashley’s family story written by her mother, with great insights in creating that haven of peace in your home.  5: Timeblock Schedule the fire out of your day. We’ve found flex time during the middle of the day is fine, but the morning and the evening have such a huge impact on how our days can get away from us. Do you want to be a human “being” or a human “doing”?   Recommended Read: The Power of Full Engagement by Jim Loehr.  This is such an incredible book to ensure you are really performing at your peak by being fully present in what you are doing at that moment. The bane of many entrepreneurs is our ability to work anytime we want…which means we are always working and doing “just one more thing.” Those “just one more things”: checking facebook, answering another email, doing one more edit, etc are all areas where the day can get away from us. Your “one thing” can take you down a four hour bunny trail. Schedule your work time, and your play time.  Do these with the same priority level.  My nightly date with Nathan is just as important as my podcast interview.  Don’t negate the importance of life beyond work.  We want to really live, not simply trudge through.  Enjoy this life, and make that a critical component of your day. 6: Bookend Your Day On that note, bookending our day has been huge. We prep our coffee in the evenings so it’s ready to go. Our family agrees on what we are going to have for breakfast so it’s no shock in the morning.  Nathan and I discuss the night before what we need to accomplish the next morning. Set your goals based on the feeling behind them, not just the lofty goal.  What is the emotion behind it all?   Recommended Read: The Fire Starter Sessions by Danielle LaPorte (http://amzn.to/2kxSjoi). This book rocked me with the concept of one thing: “What is the feeling behind the goal you set?” This is fabulous in writing or audio, and was a pivotal book in directing my life of travel.   Your Life Is Your Responsibility Like I’ve written so many times, we are in charge of our lives.  We have the power to create with intention, or live in reaction.   When we are consistent and stick to a schedule, we find we feel way more in control of our lives – living with intention and not just reacting as life passes us by. Ever wish you knew what smart people were talking about? Me too.  I used to be too embarrassed to ask, but not any more. "um, excuse me sir, excuse me ma'am, would you please dumb that down?" It's that easy.  I was in 6th grade last year and had tough time paying attention when I was in a desk for that long. Sorry Mrs. Nissen.  So my mom and dad let me take a year off as long as I was "up to something" and I kept doing Kahn Academy math everyday. Mr. Sal Kahn, if you're listening, thanks a lot (joking and serious).  This is podcast is my "something".  I find people who are brilliant and see if they can explain what they do so I can understand it.  I love my guests.  They are all busy people who make time to Dumb it Down for me... and now for you.  Bo
