Don't Dumb it Down, and Other Science Writing Tips and Tricks Bethany Brookshire, PhD, Science Journalist Website | Twitter @Beebrookshire Abstract Bethany Brookshire, science journalist and author of Pests: How Humans Create Animal Villains, made the transition from scientist to science writer. Most people lead their lives with their mind, not their heart. This causes unnecessary stress, worry, and anxiety. Why? Because your heart sends signals to your mind, and your mind makes up negative stories about whatever your heart's sending you. And most people don't realize they can lead their lives with their heart instead of their mind. But by leading your life with your heart first, you can eliminate these anxiety-inducing thoughts before they even pop up. In this episode, you'll discover how to lead your life with your heart first, how it erases much of your suffering, and why it'll make your life easier and happier. Listen now. Show Highlights Include The insidious way our brain makes up stories about our life (and how these stories can either be beneficial or harmful) (3:01) How thinking in terms of stories gives you gut-wrenching anxiety that makes your blood pump, your heart hammer, and blurs the beauty of life (8:41) Why believing everything your mind thinks can wreck your relationships, heighten your trauma, and make you miserable (11:06) The “Dumb It Down” secret for eliminating 90% of your anxious, worried thoughts (14:16) How simply looking into this fancy mirror can shatter all the mental projections you have about yourself (25:14) If you want to radically change how much control you have over your emotions in as little as 20 days, you can go to https://thefreedomspecialist.com/feelbetternow and sign up for the Choose Your Own Emotion course. If you or somebody you know is looking to drop the ‘F' Bomb of freedom in your life and break free from addiction, depression, anxiety or anything that's making you feel flat-out stuck, head over to https://thefreedomspecialist.com/ and book a call where we can look at your unique situation and give you the roadmap you've been missing. Every time an event happens in our life—good, bad, or in between—our brain creates a story out of it. And since your brain is cunning and sly, it connects these made-up stories to other made-up stories in your mind. While this isn't necessarily a good or bad thing, most people believe these stories they tell themselves are reality itself. The result? Your mind creates trauma, suffering, and misery out of thin air! Not only are these stories false, but two stories almost never have the connective tissue between them that your brain thinks they do. And by simply questioning these stories, you can free yourself from your suffering. In this episode, you'll discover how to question these stories and unlock peace as your default state. Listen now. Show Highlights Include The insidious way our brain makes up stories about our life (and how these stories can either be beneficial or harmful) (3:01) How thinking in terms of stories makes your blood pump, your heart hammer, and blurs the beauty of life (8:41) Why believing everything your mind thinks can wreck your relationships, heighten your trauma, and make you miserable (11:06) The “Dumb It Down” secret for eliminating 90% of your anxious, worried thoughts (14:16) How simply looking into this fancy mirror can shatter all the mental projections you have about yourself (25:14) If you want to radically change how much control you have over your emotions in as little as 20 days, you can go to https://thefreedomspecialist.com/feelbetternow and sign up for the Choose Your Own Emotion course. They said it couldn't be done. Dumb It Down celebrates our 50th episode by opening up the floor to questions from our fans. We cover everything from NBA Jam, to fashion, to the Big Burger Benefit Bowl, to romance, and all things in between. We finish up with Vibe Check and Hunk of the Week, per usual. Thank you to everyone who has tuned in and we promise to take the next 50 episodes to another level!

The other day, I got the nicest note from a prospect, who by the way is now a client. He said "The information you shared was valuable and easy to understand. Most of the folks we talked to try to wow us with technical crap and it becomes so confusing. You guys didn't , thanks!! " As a former school teacher, I was trained to break complex concepts into smaller, easy to understand elements. It seems that skill is an asset in my marketing consulting sessions as well. Too often subject matter experts think they have to impress their prospects with their knowledge instead of making them feel comfortable. Why would someone want to hang around you if you make them feel uncomfortable? As you're writing information, even if it's for a technical audience, dumb it down a little Why? It's easier to grasp the important concepts if the language is simple, clear, and direct. So what about you? Are you so busy sounding smart that you're running off your prospects? If that's the case, simplify your messages and sell more.

In this episode I talk about dumbing it down - I have come to see that nothing valuable for the spirit is complicated.
Nobody likes to feel dumb. Sometimes, however, in our effort to show how smart, intelligent and valuable we are, we can lose sight of that fact. When creating information for our customers and clients we tend to favour the smart side. And that's completely understandable, of course. After all, if we don't, why would they chose to pay us for our expertise? But just be careful that in doing so you don't end up making your customers feel dumb. #knowyourcustomer #smartpeople #customercommunication

If I could count how manny people I've met, Lessons I've learned and friendships that have became from Dumb It Down, That would take some time. Because there is not a number that high. I was just a kid peer pressured by my parents to talk into a microphone. I had everything I could possibly need to succeed, but only I could flip the switch and make a podcast. And that was STILL hard to do, But once I did, I never looked back. I got so much wisdom from the best people in the best places, I got friendships from the friendliest, most welcoming people on earth, I got connection, I got money, and I got listeners, I got to travel too, I got to speak and sell for some of my dear friends and families companies. I knew I could never match that feeling of happiness again. My point is, as a twelve year old with tens of thousands of listens from all over the globe. My life was and still is AMAZING! And I know this is super cliche' but none of that feeling wood happen without, The support from my parents 24/7, the guests who took time out of their busy schedule to talk to some kid with a microphone and all my listeners, and every single one of you have built up my heart and my inspiration to keep creating. There is no feeling quite like being listened to by that many people.Ya'll have heard me laugh, and you have heard me cry, you might of heard me tell a terrible joke, but most of all, Ya'll have heard me grow. So THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!! Thank you for every memory, every good comment on my website, Every word of inspiration, every hour you would take out of your day to listen to me. Your love is not un-noticed and deeply appreciated. Dumb it down will always be marked in my book of life. But it is time to close the show. This was the podcast that built me, this is what I did to be happy. Over the last year or so, I lost that happiness and did not have the same feelings for podcasting as I did before. But I am back, And I couldn't cling to an old podcast. I still love it, But doing something new always fixes a feeling of boredom. To keep the same love I had, I had to do something new. My new approach is "Just have a good time" Interview the right people and spread to more people like you. Alright, Im out.

Whattup doe! We’re back with episode 109 and we got my man Norm and our guy Che of Scressfree Sundays Podcast. We get into Che’s playlist and a few other recent happenings. First up is Jay-Z’s “Song Cry,” considered one of the best songs on The Blueprint. With both Norm and Che being artists, I ask if they have a “Song Cry” in their catalog. They also explain if being too personal too soon as an artist is a thing. Next up is “4,3,2,1” by LL Cool J. The three of us discuss who had the best verse, the most underrated verse, and where the song ranks in the posse cut days. We also talk on the Canibus and LL beef if we remember this phenomenon album. “Juicy” by BIG is next. We talk about what the era of sampling did for the Hiphop genre, and what Puff means to Hiphop. On the topic of Bad Boy, we also touch on King Los and why his deal with Bad Boy didn’t work out. After “Juicy,” we move on to Lupe Fiasco’s “Dumb It Down.” Norm speaks on if he’s ever heard that his music goes over his fans’ heads and if anyone has tried to convince him to change his sound. I give Che the task of being the A&R for Da Baby’s next project and he tells me which producer he would put on the album. We also talk if Meg Thee Stallion and Da Baby’s style of music will last. We also talk tracks by Fab, Rick Ross, Roddy Rich, Wu Tang, Freeway and more. Then Che takes us back to talk about high school rap battles. BG and J catch up and share some not so deep thoughts on porn doppelgängers, when rappers try and get woke, and what B needs to do to enter his Kanye phase. Also, J discovers why white people always keep their blinds open. *This episode also contains multiple instances of mistakenly referring to Sally Hemings as “Sally Jennings” . Kaden and his father Jorge Garcia are the founders of the stylish and trendy clothing company "Your tribe clothing." Here is the story of how it started. Kadens best friend died of suicide in 8th grade. Also, Jorge had a heart attack and considered suicide himself. After all these unfortunate events nothing happened. It was when Kadens friend at Springville High School committed suicide and Kaden was the one who decided to make a difference. A week-long text conversation between Kaden and his father Jorge led to the company "Your tribe clothing." Sending the message of love and togetherness inspiring all those thinking of taking their own life. With a word strong word (in a good way) on the front with the shirt and a well-designed letter I (using the semicolon for that is the sign of suicide awareness). Words such as Fight, Running, Amazing, Loving, or someday Dumb It Down (just kidding don't want to destroy their company.) Here is an article I have read about them on KSL down here. www.yourtribeclothingcompany.com From Dumb it down radio I am your host Bo Mabry. If you want to see more from Kaden and Jorge go to @yourtribeclothing on Instagram. If you want more from me @dumbitdownradio also on IG. This one piece of advice has been handed down from copywriter to copywriter. But somewhere, someone got it wrong. And this misheard lyric (or Chinese whisper… but we probably shouldn’t call it that any more) … makes copy weak and ineffective. Want to know what it is?Listen in as Pauline and Rae share what copywriters and regular folks get wrong when they write. And more importantly, what to do instead. When you do this, you’ll connect better and your words will convert better too.

Ever wish you knew what smart people were talking about? Me too. I used to be too embarrassed to ask, but not any more. "um, excuse me sir, excuse me ma'am, would you please dumb that down?" It's that easy. I was in 6th grade last year and had tough time paying attention when I was in a desk for that long. Sorry Mrs. Nissen. So my mom and dad let me take a year off as long as I was "up to something" and I kept doing Kahn Academy math everyday. Mr. Sal Kahn, if you're listening, thanks a lot (joking and serious). This is podcast is my "something". I find people who are brilliant and see if they can explain what they do so I can understand it. I love my guests. They are all busy people who make time to Dumb it Down for me... and now for you. Bo
SPOILERS!!!!! We're going through the movie talking about what we did and did not like. Go see it before you listen to this, or just go ahead and be spoiled. The movie has been out for a while now.
Demarco Castle, better known as Gemstones (fka Gemini) is a Chicago-born rapper and singer best known for his work on Lupe Fiasco's first two albums, "Food & Liquor" and "The Cool," featuring on standout cuts such as "Pressure" (along with Jay Z), "Dumb It Down," and "The Die." As a part of Lupe's record label 1st & 15th, he built anticipation for his "Troubles of the World" album through critically acclaimed mixtapes such as "Untamed Beast" and "The Testimony of GemStones." After striking out on his own and leaving 1st & 15th, Gemstones continued his lyrically dexterous, introspective, thought provoking music with "On the Road to Glory" and "Elephant in The Room," which led up to his most recent effort, "Blind Elephant," which you can purchase and stream on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, Tidal, and other major retailers. On this episode, Gemstones tells his story. From coming up in Chicago, to almost getting signed by Will Smith, to meeting and creating with Lupe Fiasco through his ascension, to the moment he knew he had to make a change in his life, Gemstones drops jewels (pun intended) throughout the conversation. Unfortunately, the episode had to be cut short, but we appreciate Gemstones giving us his time, and you will too, as this is an episode that you must not miss.
