In this podcast we talk about the vital role of small businesses in driving growth into the UK economy as they invest in skills and technology to lead innovation and new thinking across the infrastructure sector. And as we approach the General Election and all parties talk about the need to drive growth, it is a great moment to talk about how government can stimulate this massive engine. While the big projects and large global consultant and contractors tend to steal the headlines and occupy the seats of power and influence across the sector, the reality is that it is the army of small and medium size enterprises that really keep the entire sector going; According to Build UK, the construction sector employs 3.1 million people, which is 1 in 10 of the UK workforce, and it has the largest share of self- employed people across the economy at 19%. And across its members, it adds, he average size of the workforce of was 2,621, with 82% of those directly employed. But we need a whole lot more talent, In fact, according to a recent report by the Construction Industry Training Board, it is estimated that for the sector to maintain its required output, it needs to recruit over 45,000 new people every year for the next five years. It's a massive challenge and a vital challenge if we are to truly leverage the power of these small businesses that sit at the heart of the industry and make it all happen. So who better to discuss this with than, Julie White, managing director of specialist contractor D-Drill and chair of Build UK, the body representing the UK contractors. Julie is an entrepreneur and until the election was called, a member of the Prime Minister's Small Business Council in the Department for Business and Trade. In this episode we sit with Kerry Schrader, the co-founder of Mixtroz, a former HR executive with extensive experience in people management, who shares her journey of creating Mixtroz alongside her daughter, to address the challenge of making authentic connections at events. Kerry explores the origins of Mixtroz and the inspiration behind their innovative concept of "mixed introduction." She discuss the common issues faced by individuals at events, both before and during the pandemic, where making genuine connections with strangers seemed daunting. She also sheds light on how her passion for social engagement led her to create Mixtroz, events designed to foster meaningful conversations and connections. The conversation takes an exciting turn as Kerry delves into the importance of meaningful connections in today's society, whether in-person or in virtual settings. Kerry shares the premise of Mixtroz and how their technology-driven platform aids individuals in making these connections effortlessly. She emphasizes that attending an event is only the first step while building relationships and having meaningful conversations is the other half of the equation. As the discussion continues, Kerry highlights the prevalent tendency of individuals to stick to familiar faces at events, neglecting the opportunity to meet new people. Kerry elaborates on the idea behind launching Mixtures, a software platform specifically designed to assist event leaders in facilitating meaningful engagement. She emphasizes that while Mixtures isn't a one-size-fits-all solution, it serves as a valuable tool to help individuals forge deeper connections and foster a sense of community. There's no reason why a partnership between the Government and banks making equity investments in small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) wouldn't work in New Zealand, says the man who heads up such a fund in Australia. The NZ Government expects the major banks to be in a position soon to decide whether to join it as an investor in a business growth fund (BGF). This comes after last year's Budget proposed a BGF to improve SMEs' access to finance, with up to $100 million earmarked for Crown investment as a minority shareholder alongside banks.Speaking in interest.co.nz's Of Interest podcast, Anthony Healy, CEO and Managing Director of the Australian Business Growth Fund (ABGF), explains how the ABGF works and sets out why he thinks such a fund is easily transferable to NZ. Healy, now based in Melbourne, was CEO of BNZ between 2014 and 2017."There are no differences that I could identify that would suggest the Fund wouldn't work [in NZ]. And I think the banks in New Zealand, their parent banks obviously supported the concept here, so it's not unknown to them," says Healy. "...the economies, the market, the business environment, they're very similar. The banking system's pretty similar."Establishing a BGF was a recommendation made by the Government's Small Business Council in its New Zealand Small Business Strategy in 2019. The ABGF received A$100 million from the Federal Government, A$100 million each from the Aussie parents of ANZ NZ, ASB, BNZ and Westpac NZ, plus A$20 million each from HSBC and Macquarie Group.Healy suggests a $400 million to $500 million BGF feels about the right size for NZ."There are tens of thousands of SMEs that would fit the [investment] profile in New Zealand. They could be in every sector of the economy," he says.In the podcast Healy also talks about how he got involved in the ABGF, getting the banks onboard, why it fills a gap in the investment market, the ABGF's investment process, the returns it seeks, the investments made to date and lots more. You can find all episodes of the Of Interest podcast here.

Their four children and seven grandchildren also live in the Chicago area. There are lots to consider including factors such as limited budget, website, digital footprint and social media presence. Wow! This outstandingly incredible episode with Jason Barnard and Nat Rosasco discusses how to create a "wow" project for your clients (small and medium businesses) that not only impresses them, but helps them compete with larger companies. Nat shares brilliant tips for creating a website, aligning budget to expectations, cutting development time and costs in half, and choosing the right fonts, colours, calls to action, hero banners, personal branding, corporate branding, and more. Nat explains how he uses geo-targeting to optimise his clients' businesses and ultimately help them get on the first page of search engine results. Jason also explains that one business can not serve all customers and that it's important to figure out who you are really relevant to so you can focus on that and then potentially expand as your business grows. As always, the show ends with passing the baton… Nat passes the virtual baton to next week's delightful guest, Allison Riggs. Happy Thursday Worthiness Warriors! This week I am joined by Kate Bailey, the founder of TARRA, a coworking space created to change how women connect in all parts of our life. Kate's expertise as an entrepreneur and business owner was cultivated over 20 years of in-the-trenches experience. A former magazine editor and journalist, she left the industry in 2007 to launch a boutique communications and marketing agency, Annabel Media. Established in 2015, the platform rapidly expanded to include networking, business education, mentorship, and a growing brand of collaborative membership workspaces. TARRA's first flex office and workspace campus opened at 9+Co in Denver in 2022 and today, the TARRA network is expanding throughout the United States with a mission to create a more inclusive and diverse business community through access to vetted business resources, education, and a powerful network of professional women. Aisha Ceballos-Crump is a first-generation Hispanic American who is the founder of two beauty brands, Botanika Beauty and Honey Baby Naturals, both multi-million dollar brands that are sold in Walmart, Target, and Sally. She is also a member of The Global Beauty Alliance and Target's Business Partner Council, serving as the only minority woman focusing on diversity and inclusion in Target's stores. Aisha was born and raised in Indiana. Both of her grandparents immigrated to Gary, Indiana during the steel industry boom to create a better life for their families, but when the steel industry crashed, so did the city. The entire city changed nearly overnight, and Aisha grew up determined that she would not stay in that place. At 28, and with a kid, she realized that she wanted to start her own business. She heard a casting call for Richard Branson's TV show Rebel Billionaire. She went for it, and, out of 250,000 applicants, she was selected to be on the show. This became the turning point where she decided she would do anything she wanted to do, and find a way to make it happen. Determined to show everyone what she was capable of, Aisha flew out to London to be on the show… only to be eliminated in the first episode. Devastated, she went back home, feeling like a failure, but the producers called her back for the finale and she had an amazing time. She felt like she belonged. She decided then and there that she was going to put her all into making her business dreams come true. She quit her high-paying job, put her entire life's savings on the line, and, eventually, Honey Baby Naturals was born. Aisha later founded Botanika Beauty to embrace her heritage, and, in her first year, got into 300 Target and 1,200 Walmart locations. In her place on the Small Business Council at Target, she fights for diversity, inclusion, and representation. What Brett asks: [01:01] Can you tell us about the beginning? Where you grew up, the family dynamic, all of it? [03:19] What do you remember about being in this environment and seeing it “go away?” [07:33] How did you learn to embrace your gifts instead of dumbing them down? [14:30] Can you tell me about your performing arts school experience? [18:09] Tell me about how your college life and early career emerge? [24:24] What happened when you realized that you didn't want to become an engineer? [30:28] When did you realize how everything in your life started coming together? Choosing a niche for your agency might seem counterintuitive at first. In this solocast, Nicole Mahoney explains how niching down creates predictable growth. Hear insights about: Nicole's journey into entrepreneurship in the travel and tourism industry How Nicole chose to pivot her business in response to the pandemic How choosing a niche saved Nicole's agency during the pandemic What we can do to build a position of thought leadership and authority within our niche The most important financial lessons Nicole has learned from building an agency Nicole's take on the most common financial mistakes agency owners make Choosing a Niche for Your Agency Nicole Mahoney is the Founder and CEO of Break the Ice Media, a Rochester, NY marketing communications agency focused on the travel and tourism industry. Entrepreneurship is in her DNA, and she has an immense passion for helping small businesses excel through the use of creativity and collaboration. In this episode of the Progressive Agency podcast, Nicole joins us to share her entrepreneurial journey and explain why choosing a niche to build thought leadership is something every agency owner should consider doing. Thriving Against All Odds Travel and tourism are central to the hospitality industry. This includes restaurants, hotels, live events, and virtually every other subsect that was devastated by the pandemic's protocols and regulations. When the world stopped turning, all of the businesses relying on the traveling public lost significant amounts of revenue. As an agency that serves those businesses, Break the Ice Media was forced to pivot. Q2 and Q3 were extremely difficult, but Nicole and her team persevered by focusing on their niche. Even though travel and tourism was at a standstill, Nicole continued to bring her clients value by any means necessary. This paid off in the long run, and BTI grossed its highest net profit since its inception. Building Thought Leadership We have talked a lot about building a position of thought leadership and authority. The reality is that it's much easier to become a thought leader after choosing a niche. When you niche down and embed yourself in a particular industry, you begin to see patterns, form opinions, and develop expertise that your generalized competitors can't offer. Nicole looked for ways to give voice to the things she was learning about travel and tourism, which started with a blog and developed into a full-blown digital platform with a podcast and live events. When you become the go-to expert in your field and you're focused on adding value, business will come knocking on your front door. Niching down is a great starting point as you develop a growth strategy for 2021 and beyond. With a talent for creating special events that blossomed while working for my dad’s car stereo shop, I got my start in marketing at Frontier Field in Rochester and I began serving as the executive director of the internationally known Lilac Festival. Later on, I headed the Canandaigua, New York Business Improvement District while also performing projects for the tourism promotion agency Visit Rochester. In 2009, I founded Break the Ice Media, with more than 20 years of experience in tourism marketing. I now host “Destination on the Left”, a highly successful tourism marketing podcast. As a business owner, I know what it takes to be successful. I founded BTI to help businesses tell their brand story through public relations, digital and traditional channels. I have the ability to uncover unique marketing opportunities and develop marketing and public relations initiatives that help clients build long-term success. In this solocast episode of Destination on the Left, I wanted to take the opportunity to share my gratitude with you. I discuss the insights I’ve gathered over the course of ten years in business and give you a look into a new project we are working on for Destination on the Left. What You Will Learn in This Episode: How to help us hit our goal of 100 reviews What I am grateful for right now The celebrations and events surrounding my company’s ten-year anniversary My experience receiving the Small Business Person of the Year Award from the Small Business Council in Rochester, NY. The insights I’ve gathered over the course of ten years in business A sneak peek at a new project we’re working on for Destination on the Left What it means to employ cathedral thinking Ten Years Worth of Gratitude As Thanksgiving and the rest of the holiday season approaches, I thought it would be appropriate to make ‘gratitude’ the theme of this week’s solocast. It is especially timely for me since my company, Break the Ice Media, celebrated its ten-year anniversary last month and I was honored with receiving the Small Business Person of the Year Award from the Small Business Council in Rochester, NY! With this episode, I want to share my gratitude with you. Celebrate Every Milestone I am grateful for you, our listeners, as we round off the podcast’s third year with overwhelming support. For our anniversary, we wanted to put together something that celebrates our team, clients, and everyone else who has been an important part of our journey. But with most of those people spread out across the continent, we had to plan something different for each group. I hope this will give you some new ideas and inspire you to do something special for your next big celebration! Our process started by selecting an anniversary planning committee. It should come as no surprise that most of the ideas for our team celebration revolved around food and wine. But we wanted to get everyone involved. Our internal survey revealed that all of our team members wanted to do something unique and special. After some research, we booked the chef’s table at Good Luck in the Village Gate Square neighborhood of Rochester! With that settled, we moved on to brainstorming a client celebration. A Toast to Our Clients It didn’t take long for the light bulb to go off and we decided to hold a virtual toast for our scattered clients on October 14th (our birthday). To incentivize them a little bit, we shipped out fifty-six bottles of sparkling wine with custom labels to make the virtual event more sentimental and immersive. I am grateful for everyone that was involved and our team members who made it possible. The Small Business Person of the Year Award was another momentous occasion. But when I was nominated for this award, I was hesitant to actually submit my application. The nomination came at a very busy time and our team was overextended. My leadership team pushed me to commit and I wouldn’t have done it without them. I made the top five of fifty finalists and it was a great honor to be recognized alongside nine other Rochester community business leaders. Cathedral Thinking As I prepared for the launch event, I drew inspiration from this podcast and reflected on all of the moments that molded me into a leader. The experience is best described by the concept of cathedral thinking, a mindset derived from manual laborers who began construction projects knowing they would not be completed in their lifetime. We are all cathedral thinkers, building our businesses for future generations, making impacts with our time to build better communities, supporting our families, and laying the foundation for our children and grandchildren for the next generation. I challenge all of us to keep having those big visions that will have far-reaching impact and to work towards that vision today, even if we do so. During Episode 65 of The HyperFast Agent Podcast, host Dan Lesniak speaks with Bud Torcom, CEO of Mazama Media and digital marketing expert, about what agents should be doing to enhance their digital marketing strategy now. Torcom shares his ideas about combining traditional methodologies with digital opportunities to maximize your success. Episode Highlights: Bud's business began when he offered to manage the social media accounts of local businesses. Facebook soon recruited him for their Small Business Council. Mazama Media's largest clients are telecommunications companies and large auto dealership conglomerates. Bud describes how agents can use offline conversions to gain more data. It takes less money than ever to start your own business. Combining old school methods with new techniques will put you on the right path. Many people want to avoid the actual grind of getting things done. Dial the phone. Do things other people don't want to do. They discuss social media engagement. Ads that get comments do better. The most shareable emotions are anger and humor. The least shareable emotion is sadness. All comments help you, even those that hurt your ego. Bud describes how one of his posts benefitted from an angry commenter. People who leave negative comments are likely in a bad place. Put more content out there. Real estate agents should be leveraging Facebook Messenger. Messenger is an efficient, safe platform that Facebook is investing heavily in right now. A side business requires discipline. If you've found an opening in the market, you should put some serious energy towards it. Everyone has enough time and money to try a side hustle. The biggest mistake Bud made in business was not taking 51% ownership. His advice to new realtors is to knock on doors and do the things other people don't want to do. His advice to experienced agents is to focus on their personal brand. Bud describes the biggest business challenge he's experienced. Bud Torcom hopes to continue helping as many entrepreneurs as possible. 3 Key Points: Combine old school methodologies with new digital opportunities to maximize success. Agents should start maximizing the potential of Facebook Messenger now. Everyone has enough time and money to pursue a side hustle.
