Our guest on this week's episode is Chris Jamroz, CEO at Roadrunner. It is no secret that the trucking industry has had a challenging couple of years. In addition to economic factors, like higher interest rates and inflation, truckers have also had to face too much capacity in the market and disruptions from several natural disasters. How has the less-than-truckload market weathered these storms and what are prospects for 2025? Our guest shares his insights.Businesses are cautiously optimistic as peak holiday shipping season draws near, with many anticipating year-over-year sales increases despite continuing to battle challenging supply chain conditions. That's according a report from DHL Express U.S. released this week; it's DHL's 2024 Peak Season Shipping Survey. The company surveyed small and medium-sized businesses to gauge their holiday business outlook compared to last year and found that a mix of optimism and “strategic caution” prevail ahead of this year's peak.It seems like there's always a new supply chain disruption right around the corner.  This week a new report from trucking and logistics provider Averitt predicted the first month of 2025 could have more turmoil than usual. The Averitt report tracked three potential supply chain hurdles as we head into 2025: the disruptions caused by Chinese New Year (CNY), the looming threat of potential tariffs on foreign-made products that could be imposed by the incoming Trump Administration, and the unresolved contract negotiations between the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) and the U.S. Maritime Alliance (USMX).Supply Chain Xchange  also offers a podcast series called Supply Chain in the Fast Lane.  It is co-produced with the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals. A series of ten episodes is now available on the "State of Logistics." The episodes provide in-depth looks into the current states of key transportation modes, such as trucking, rail, air, and ocean. It also looks at inventory management, 3PLs and more.  All ten episodes are available to stream now. Go to your favorite podcast platform to subscribe and to listen to past and future episodes. We talk about the challenges of predicting the market over the short-term, the importance of understanding base rates and how long-term investors should view forecasts. We also cover dollar cost averaging and the ways it can be both used and misused. We discuss why one use of dollar cost averaging is much more useful than the other and the ways investors with a lump sum of money to invest in the market can think about deploying it. We discuss the importance of leading indicators in understanding potential future outcomes for market and business cycles. By examining these indicators, investors can gain insight into the expansion, slowdown, contraction, and recovery phases of the business cycle. Fowler highlights the importance of macro regime distributions, which help identify how market performance, profits, and valuations cluster around the business cycle. He emphasizes the need for humility when interpreting leading indicators, as they are often mere guesses with inherent errors. (0:14:13) - Navigating Interest Rates (7 Minutes) We discuss the impact of rising interest rates on corporate profitability and the potential economic ramifications. Despite healthy jobs growth and elevated inflation figures, there are signs that the tightening of credit standards and weakening demand for credit will affect profitability. The lag effect of rate hikes and the hidden credit tightening in private enterprise, along with the increase in bankruptcies, suggests that there may be a need to brace for a potential economic downturn. The conversation also touches on the Federal Reserve's potential pivot to a more dovish position, the likelihood of a recession starting in the third quarter of this year, and the expectation of aggressive rate cuts from the fourth quarter. (0:21:16) - Harnessing Strengths to Succeed in Career (2 Minutes) Reflecting on my career in finance, I recall my first job at Salomon's with Barney in Australia and my journey into derivatives strategy and portfolio management. I discuss the importance of knowing one's strengths and leaning into them for success. Additionally, I emphasize the value of becoming a specialist while maintaining a broad network of colleagues, competitors, and providers for a well-rounded perspective as you progress in your career.

Today I'm talking about market forecasts and predictions. Why? Unlike the core principles that create a successful investment outcome, the financial + economic environment is always changing. And the current environment drives a lot of our assumptions and decisions about the future. While I think investors should ignore most pundits, I do believe thoughtful forecasts are valuable. If you want to learn more about how to approach stock market forecasts (which there is no shortage of right now!), this episode is for you.

With interest rates near zero, Australia's economy rebounding, and pumped with massive amounts of stimulus, and the coronavirus all but eradicated from our shores, our property markets are looking healthy and starting the year off on a strong footing. The stats show that after the nation went into lockdown last year, national property rates fell overall a cumulative 2.2 percent. And of course, this was led by Melbourne and Sydney that were most affected by the lockdowns. But of course, this was nothing like the predicted calamitous falls. Now on the back of continuing increase in confidence, strong growth low mortgage rates, and the emergence of a vaccine plan, many are projecting house price growth in 2021. In fact, many are projecting double digit growth this year. Are they right? That's what I discuss with Dr. Andrew Wilson, along with lessons from last year and housing market forecasts for 2021. Then, as always, I'll share my mindset message with you. Lessons learned from 2020: It was really the physical restraints to property transactions that impacted the market, rather than a change to our supply and demand. In other words, the property market fundamentals were and are strong Be really careful whose forecasts you listen to. Property investors who listened to catastrophic predictions missed out on good opportunities There isn't just one Australian property market. Markets are segmented by geographic locations as well as by factors like the type of dwelling and the price. Property investment is really a game of finance with some houses thrown in the middle What's occurring now: The unemployment rate is falling The economy is recovering well due to falling unemployment and even new jobs There's been a huge surge in housing loan approvals – 24.4% above pre-pandemic levels Consumer optimism is trending upward First-time home buyers are in the mix There is a lower number of listings in the market than usual The fiscal cliff is not a real cliff, more like a step However, the rental market still has some challenges Links and Resources: Michael Yardney Get the team at Metropole to help build your personal Strategic Property Plan Click here and have a chat with us Guest: Dr Andrew Wilson – MYHousingMarket.com.au  Shownotes plus more here: Here's why we're going to have a ripper year in property + Housing Market Forecasts for 2021 with Dr. Andrew Wilson Some of our favourite quotes from the show: “You know what they say about opinions – there's like bellybuttons, everyone's got one, but they're not very useful.” – Michael Yardney “The property market moves in a cycle and after every boom, there's a downturn or a slump phase, and then it actually starts to pick up again slowly, then eventually another boom occurs.” – Michael Yardney “It may sound like a cliché, but maybe it's time to play more and work less.” – Michael Yardney PLEASE LEAVE US A REVIEW Reviews are hugely important to me because they help new people discover this podcast. The issue, which is part of HW+ Premium Content, also highlights what the HousingWire editorial team believes could happen for each sector of the housing industry in next year's market. For some background on the interview, here's a brief summary of a recent HousingWire article on the 2021 housing market forecast:Even prior to the pandemic, housing inventory had hit record lows, and the problem has only gotten worse as demand continues to rise. Total home sales are outpacing new listings by a wide margin every month, and real estate tech company Homesnap foresees the shortage continuing in 2021 unless more sellers enter the market. The divide between supply and demand is striking: compared to last year, total new listings increased .22%, while total sales increased 19.29%. Homesnap said this trend could further drain inventory as 2021 approaches.Home prices have risen as a result of the mismatch in homebuyer demand and housing inventory. The average list price for properties that sold rose 6.7% from September to October this year, which Homesnap said is significantly higher than the same figure in 2018 and 2019.As median home prices keep rising, homeowners who originally planned to sell within the next three to five years might list their homes sooner, Homesnap said, freeing up more inventory.HousingWire Daily examines the most compelling articles reported from the HousingWire newsroom. This week is dominated by politics and brinkmanship. The fiscal cliff beckons once again, and no doubt a last minute resolution will be achieved - but if not, the NFP data on Friday could be a little thin! In Italy Silvio is trying to stay out of jail, and the ECB is also trying to do the same for the euro! Chinese data dominates along with Australia, so a great deal of focus on risk and risk assets. All in all, another interesting week for the markets, which appear, for the time being at any rate, to be taking a sanguine view to the whole business.
