The Joint Readiness Training Center is pleased to present the eighty-eighth episode to air on ‘The Crucible - The JRTC Experience.' Hosted by the MAJ(P) Westly “West” LaFitte, the Brigade Executive Officer Observer-Coach-Trainer for Brigade Command & Control on behalf of the Commander of Ops Group (COG). Today's guests are two Infantry Officers at the Maneuver Captain's Career Course, CPT Joe Wilson and 1LT Jack Hoover. The Maneuver Captains' Career Course (MCCC or MC3), hosted by the Maneuver Center of Excellence at Fort Moore, Georgia, is a 22-week program designed primarily for U.S. Army infantry and armor officers, with participants also including U.S. Marine Corps captains and officers from allied nations. The course's mission is to equip these officers with the skills necessary for effective company command and to fulfill tactical planning duties as battalion S-3 operations staff officers. MCCC has its roots in the former Infantry and Armor Officer Advanced Courses, which prepared captains for command and staff roles within their respective branches. Since 2008, MCCC has merged these curricula into a unified “maneuver” focus, reflecting the integrated requirements of modern warfare. The course is organized into three teams, each led by a senior major and divided into 12 seminars of about 15 officers, guided by a senior captain or major. Offered six times annually, MCCC runs three classes concurrently, supporting a student body of approximately 400 to 600 officers at any given time. In this episode, we discuss the role of infantry formations during large-scale combat operations. The discussion highlights the importance of preparing for LSCO by refining individual and unit-level competencies, particularly through rigorous training cycles leading up to CTC rotations. We emphasize the value of properly developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) at the platoon and company levels, ensuring that units arrive at training events with well-rehearsed systems rather than creating them on the fly. We also stress the necessity of fostering a mindset that embraces the challenges of JRTC or NTC as culminating events designed to validate training rather than as administrative burdens. Additionally, the conversation touches on the role of junior leaders in setting the tone for their formations, ensuring that battle drills, reporting procedures, and sustainment operations are ingrained long before units step onto a high-intensity training environment. A significant portion of the discussion is dedicated to the staff experience and the importance of mastering the military decision-making process (MDMP) at the battalion and brigade levels. Our guests recount their initial challenges in grasping MDMP's complexity, particularly from the perspective of sustainment and logistical planning. We highlight how exposure to staff processes at earlier stages in their careers, including serving as S4s or executive officers, provided them with invaluable insights into how different warfighting functions interact to support maneuver. The importance of pace planning, redundancy in communications, and maintaining a clear logistics picture were recurring themes, with examples of how failures in these areas created friction during their CTC rotations. We also discuss the need for self-development beyond formal education, encouraging peers to actively seek mentorship, read doctrine, and engage in professional discussions outside of duty hours to build a more holistic understanding of the battlefield. The Joint Readiness Training Center is pleased to present the seventy-seventh episode to air on ‘The Crucible - The JRTC Experience.' Hosted by the MAJ(P) Westly “West” LaFitte, the Brigade Executive Officer Observer-Coach-Trainer for Brigade Command & Control on behalf of the Commander of Ops Group (COG). Today's guests are two Small Group Leaders of the Maneuver Captain's Career Course at the Maneuver Center of Excellence, CPT Matthew Dunn and CPT Jordan Scanlon. In this episode we discuss key insights into leadership and operational effectiveness at the company and platoon levels during large-scale combat operations. A primary lesson learned is the critical importance of adaptability and readiness within small-unit leadership, as the complex and dynamic battlefield environment demands quick decision-making under pressure. Platoon leaders and company commanders must develop autonomous decision-making skills and a strong understanding of the commander's intent. This autonomy is essential, especially in scenarios where communication lines may be compromised by enemy electronic warfare efforts. Leaders must ensure that every soldier has a clear grasp of the mission objectives, allowing units to maintain operational effectiveness even when cut off from higher command. This episode also underscores the importance of “brilliance in the basics,” particularly for foundational skills in movement, coordination, and logistics management. Small-unit leaders stressed that mastery of basic soldiering tasks, such as secure communication practices, tactical movement, and efficient resupply operations, is indispensable for sustaining momentum during prolonged engagements. Additionally, the integration of new assets, such as multifunctional reconnaissance elements and flexible support units, requires company and platoon leaders to be proficient in managing these resources effectively on the ground. These lessons underscore the need for platoon and company leaders to cultivate a blend of tactical proficiency and adaptability, ensuring that they can operate independently and sustain combat effectiveness across diverse and challenging LSCO environments. Part of S03 “Lightfighter Lessons” series. Note from the podcast team: This episode was filmed during the Maneuver Warfighter Conference in April 2024, so the audio and video quality maybe reduced due to filming in an expeditionary manner. The Joint Readiness Training Center is pleased to present the fifty-seventh episode to air on ‘The Crucible - The JRTC Experience.' Hosted by the Commander of Ops Group (COG), COL Matthew Hardman. Today's guest is the Commanding General of the Maneuver Center of Excellence, MG Curtis Buzzard. The Maneuver Center of Excellence was established in September 2011 when the US Army Armor Center and School moved from Ft. Knox, KY to Ft. Benning, GA (now Ft. Moore) in addition to the US Army Infantry Center and School. Fort Moore supports more than 120,000 active-duty military, family members, reserve component soldiers, retirees and civilian employees on a daily basis. Established in 1918 as Camp Benning and in 1922 Camp Benning became Fort Benning. In 2023 the name was changed to honor LTG Hal Moore and his wife Julia Compton Moore. In this episode we focus on training and leader development, an area that the Maneuver Center of Excellence (MCoE) specializes in as it offers over 60 courses, ranging from Basic Combat Training to Ranger School to the Maneuver Captain's Career Course (MCCC). We also discuss some of the modernization efforts being undertaken as the MCoE is the proponent for force modernization for brigade and below formations. Specifically discussed is the deliberate refocusing on brilliance of the basics of small unit tactics, seen especially during Infantry, armor, and cavalry soldiers' One Station Unit Training that combines basic training with advanced individual training for a twenty-two-week program. Over the last two years, MCoE has striven to incorporate emerging trends and technologies into their courses offered so that Soldiers and leaders alike are able to successfully fight and win any conflict that the US finds itself in tomorrow. This includes incorporating the employment of small UAS and basic EW capabilities into OSUT as well as having guest speakers from current ongoing conflicts at MCCC. People, in general, have a way of just going along to get along. Forging ahead for decades of our lives, often doing things that we might not be in love with doing. It's really a terrible way to live. You gotta applaud people who decide to chose their own destiny. I think about that often as I move on in my life. I'm happy to say that at this point in my life, I'm doing what I feel like doing. It took almost 3 decades, but I got here. So when I heard that Sonia Erika made the decision to move on from her work in cannabis to pursue something else, I was happy. I met Sonia around the time when I was starting my journey in cannabis. She was part of a collective of young voices of color called CannaCultural. She would go on to become an influential voice in Massachusetts with her work Massachusetts Recreational Consumer Council But like myself, Sonia had a moment when she realized it might be time to explore something new. I had a chance to speak with Sonia recently about her move to music, leaving cannabis, and what that meant to her, Death is a Business and “Golden Boy”, whether or not there is a second chapter for her in cannabis. . Today's guest is Lieutenant Dan Asper, USMC. Lt Dan Asper, a native of Upper Dublin, PA, is a first Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, stationed at Camp Lejeune North Carolina. Lt Asper is a motor transport platoon commander and leads a platoon of 35 Marine tactical vehicle operators. Lt. Asper is a graduate of Texas A&M University where he earned a degree in Political Science. Lt Asper also attended Montgomery College Community College for 2 years prior to transferring to Texas A&M. In our conversation, Lt Asper describes how spending 2 years at home working, coaching for a competitive swim team and focusing on his grades at MCCC was one of the most transformative periods of his life. I ask Lt Asper how he would compare his local community college to a famous school like Texas A&M. I think his answer may surprise you. We also discuss what it is like to lead 35 Marines and what the day in the life of a US Marine platoon commander requires. Lt Asper tells us how his childhood conversations with his grandfather, who was a surface warfare officer in the US Navy in the 1950's led to him to serving in the Marine Corp. We also get into the value of surrounding yourself with like-minded people, like Lt Asper did when he entered the ROTC program at Texas A&M and the value of leaving the little bubble of your hometown to get a new and fresh perspective on the world. We also get into his personal definition of leadership, what historical leader he looks up to and how a leader must synthesize information into timely and actionable items so their team can move forward and accomplish their mission. We also touch on why no matter if you are in the Marine Corp or work a corporate job there is nothing more powerful establishing great relationships and why being a good person, with high character will take you further than any complex strategy or competitive mindset will in the military and in life. So… Thank you for listening. If you like what you hear, please HIT the SUBSCRIBE BUTTON. We have a bunch of cool interviews, like this one, to come. Enjoy my conversation on with Marine first Lieutenant Dan Asper, motor transport platoon commander stationed in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Spirit Come The Spirit of God was with us two years ago as we first gathered in the Menefee's living room for Home Church. The Spirit is with us now in this sacred space, where hundreds of lives have been saved since it was dedicated over 100 years ago. After standing empty, void of worshippers for the last few years, God had a plan to fill this beautiful chapel with His worshippers again and here we are. While we celebrate the past 2 years of being MCCC, it is exhilarating to think to the future about what God has in store for us next. As a body of believers, we have made a commitment to be led completely by the Holy Spirit of God and we continue to ask the Spirit to give us God's vision for the future of Misty Creek Community Church. We are thrilled that you are here today to celebrate our two-year anniversary, to witness the mighty power of God through worship, and to be a part of the continued growth of His church. This episode was recorded during Ryann Casey's artist talk about her show, Loss Event, at the JKC Gallery. We're back for another fantastic episode of Dan Saves the World! We're joined this week by Bat-Huss to talk about none other than our favorite event of the year-- Nerd Christmas, aka Motor City Comic Con! What's so great about these comic conventions? I mean, they're sprouting up everywhere, so surely there has to be an allure. A draw. A certain, as the French say, I don't know what. We dig into all that goodness and then immediately start talking about other stuff that entertains us more. But first, I take a few minutes to get something off my chest about Memorial Day. I'm not saying everyone has to be the same in how they respect vets. But is it possible that people have been missing the point for some time now? Listen in and discuss! Sweet mother of God, what a ridiculously packed night we had for episode 143 of our weekly live podcast...probably one of our last ones from the current Podcast Detroit studio as we get ready to expand. And we had to "expand" a bit last night by running over due to all of the guests and great conversations we had. From Lea Thompson (Back to the Future, Howard the Duck, Some Kind of Wonderful and more) to John E L Tenney (UFOs, paranormal), Jason David Frank (Power Rangers, MMA), Ming Chen (Comic Book Men), Jordan Trovillion (Comics Continuum), and our in-studio guests, two DPS teachers who are dealing with the chaos going on every day, and had rather unique stories to tell that the media isn't necessarily telling you about... We started off the night just like we did last week, with a call in guest from the upcoming Motor City Comic Con. Lea Thompson called in to talk Back to the Future, Some Kind of Wonderful, Howard the Duck, and all of her other projects...including things she's currently working on and some pretty cool items she's going to have with her at the show this weekend. John E. L Tenney talked about his series about ghosts and the paranormal currently airing, as well as the "Michigan Dog Man" and Nain Rouge. Jason David Frank, who we met a couple of years ago an MCCC, chatted about the upcoming Power Rangers movie, the fan made film, still wanting to get in an MMA ring with CM Punk, and being "spandex ready". We've had a blast getting to know Ming Chen over the past six months, with his "Ming and Mike Show" airing on our Podcast Detroit network, and we're really looking forward to seeing both him and Michael Zapcic this weekend. You'll be able to hear more from Ming this coming Monday night, as he's staying in town for a couple of days after MCCC to come hit the studio with us for our show. We've run into Jordan Trovillion at nearly every con we've been to recently, even had adjoining tables, and for some reason we still haven't managed to have her on the show. Well, that changed last night, and we had a great chat with her about Comics Continuum, and all of her other projects in the works that she'll be ready and waiting to talk with you about this weekend. In between all of that, we actually had some serious conversations to get to with our guests Carole and John, both teachers with DPS, who clued us into a whole lot of material that we haven't really been hearing from the local news. Like what's really at stake from the teachers' point of view, how this is actually impacting the kids, the games being played on a ridiculous scale and how those same kids are caught in the middle of a whole bunch of bureaucratic nonsense and political infighting. Definitely give that a listen.
