Hello, romantics! Your host Manish (@vertigay314) invites Melanie Greenberg (@moviemavengal) of Pardesi Reviews (@PardesiYT) for John M. Stahl's Leave Her to Heaven! The 1945 film starring Gene Tierney is both a dark film noir thriller and a lush, vibrantly colorful Technicolor melodrama.. With a captivating and disturbing lead performance, bonkers twists, and allusions to Greek mythology, the film is one of a kind. Its influence on the "obsessed lover" genre cannot be understated!
Getting our power back is a process that we have to make part of our daily life. Before you can effectively get your power back, you have to realize that you no longer have all of your power and make the decision to gain it back. This is not to say none of us have our power because that is not true, however it's to say if you ever felt stuck, anxious, depressed and even fearful at times there's a part of you that may have lost it's power to thrive in your environment. Sometimes you can get trapped in your own negative way of thinking. In a Psychology Today, Dr. Melanie Greenberg discusses three common thinking patterns, but here is two of them: Negative Rumination: Continuously focusing on negative outcomes that can lead to feelings of being discouraged, stuck, and even depressed.Overthinking: Trying to think of and plan for every possible scenario, essentially attempting to control that which is out of your control, in an effort to avoid any pain or disappointment.Come tune in to today's podcast as coach KA takes us on a journey of getting our power back despite the odds that maybe against us. May we reclaim our power and use it to create healing and beauty in the world we are living in today. You've probably heard the term Showing Up for Yourself. In a nutshell, it's all about practicing epic Self-care (yes, that is Self with a capital S and for good reason.) Dr. Denise Fournier, a clinical psychologist said in a post for Thrive Global, the idea of showing up for yourself from a mental health perspective has tremendous depth and significance. Showing up for yourself is all about making yourself a priority and taking care of your own needs, whether they be practical, physical, emotional or spiritual. We all know that unless you show up for yourself first, you can't fully show up for anyone or anything else. You will hear some people say that taking care of your own needs first is selfish. Don't listen to them. This act is about taking care of YOU. You must be your own advocate to thrive in this wild and wacky world of constant flux. We spend so much time on automatic pilot, focusing our attention on mundane things . Showing up for yourself means taking a break from all that to get grounded, be mindful and present in order to care for your health and to nurture your own creativity. Ways to Show Up for YourselfAcknowledge where you are... no judgement.Notice negative self-talk (notice those moments when your monkey mind says you're not good enough). Say thank you for the insight and tell the monkey mind to leave town!Create daily affirmations. Kick negative thoughts by replacing them with strong confident ones as a mantra. Write in a gratitude journal. Dr. Melanie Greenberg, a clinical psychologist specializing in stress and mindfulness recommends keeping a journal where you can write down what you're grateful for and express appreciation to yourself for actions that serve your values . Carve out time for yourself. Reserving a few minutes for yourself each day can help boost well-being. Start now by getting into the practice of supporting yourself in a myriad of ways. Showing Up for Yourself will become second nature and you might just be surprised at the burst of your own inner power.Featured treat:Almond Thumbprint Cookies, courtesy of The Simple Veganista (click here for the recipe!)Sign up for the RFG Newsletter!Favorite or follow Recipe for Growth on your favorite podcast app or visit RecipeforGrowthShow.com for all the goodies!Let's Connect!FacebookInstagram

When I travel outside of the US I often think that American citizens have no idea what a “war zone” we are actually living in. Guns are rampant every where. Military hardware comes back from global combat for use by our police departments further escalating violence. Since 2001, the US has spent $32M PER HOUR on war with each taxpayer paying a total of $24,000. US military spending far exceeds every other country on earth including China which comes in a distant second. Those of us in the conflict resolution field know all too well that when you create an adversarial climate, you get identity group polarization. Sure enough, racial tensions in the US are at an epic high and, while “the feminine” is rising, girls and the feminine are under harsh attack with man in our White House who brags of assaulting women and a Supreme Court majority that does not protect women by law from domestic violence. We in the US typically think of ourselves as the envy of the world to which certainly there is some truth. But we are numb to what it costs us — on every level — to dominate the planet. So when I heard Melanie speak at the AfP annual conference about the Hands Across the Hills initiative which applies the same peacebuilding approaches used in the most deadly conflicts around the world to conflict in the US I was intrigued and wanted to learn more. Melanie is one of those souls who exudes both integrity, kindness, high professionalism and intelligence. She is currently the Managing Director at Humanity United (HU) overseeing the peacebuilding and conflict transformation portfolio which develops, refines and implements strategies to build peace and counter violent conflict. She has helped design and facilitate public peace processes in the Middle East, Northern Ireland, the Caucuses and much more. Because she is one of the most seasoned and respected practitioners in the peacebuilding field, I wanted to hear her definition of peacebuilding, how it has emerged as a field, and what she sees as the trends. “Peacebuilding” emerged in around 1990 and was first articulated by Boutros Boutros-Ghali from the United Nations. Melanie describes the various streams coming together (at least in the US) to form the peacebuilding river: the Vietnam anti-war movement, the anti-nuclear movement, the environmental movement which required large scale consensus processes to resolve disputes around land, and the Alternative Dispute Resolution movement giving rise to mediation and other collaborative processes as an alternative to the adversarial American legal system. All of these movements, she says, inspired people to act for themselves and realize that building peace wasn't just the role of the government but could and should belong to citizens as well. She continues on with an excellent definition of peacebuilding which you can hear on the track. She sees many exciting trends in peacebuilding — what we are learning about the connection between neuroscience and peacemaking, and how peacebuilding is becoming more systemically integrated into our institutions. Cool to know that many of the large peacebuilding organizations have come together to improve the “branding” of peacebuilding — to make peace enticing, and counter the news culture of “if it bleeds it leads”. The most discouraging trend to her is that, among practitioners, the US is now generally seen as a “peacebuilding problem”. All of the criteria that are red flags for a peacebuilding initiative are present in this country — the level of gun violence, the tensions, the polarization, the number of deaths from violent conflict. In the Hands Across the Hills initiative, peacebuilder Paula Green is creating dialogue between people from a very conservative area from Eastern Kentucky and a very liberal area from Western Massachusetts. Please see show notes for more information. Leave us your thoughts at https://www.susancoleman.global/the-peacebuilding-podcast. We love hearing from you.

Speaker or Performer: Bob & Julie Petersen Scripture Passage(s): Philippians 3:13 Date of Delivery: December 30, 2018 Redeeming RegretWhat is Regret?Regret is a negative cognitive/emotional state that involves blaming ourselves for a bad outcome, feeling a sense of loss or sorrow at what might have been or wishing we could undo a previous choice that we made.Do People Living in the U.S. Experience Regret More Than in Other Cultures?Regret is higher in cultures such as the U.S., where individuals have more choice over their life's course, versus in cultures with arranged marriages, where family have much more control over life choices.Dictionary:Regretfeeling sad, repentant, or disappointed over (something that has happened or been done, especially a loss or missed opportunity).sorrow aroused by circumstances beyond one's control or power to repairJulie: “I felt the regret of not having a girl”Studies show that regret is the second-most common emotion people mention in daily life, And it’s the most common negative emotion.-Psychology Today► Regret is actually a God given tool in our learning process.► It is actually healthy for us when we use it as a learning process and not live in it.Sometimes a past mistake is useful as a growth-op and sometimes it isn’t. The wisdom is in knowing the difference. -Bruce Grierson, a social-science writerJulie:We can learn to deal with what causes regret so we don’t have to suffer loss in heavenPeople are afraid to evaluate a situation. 1 Corinthians 3:10-15According to the grace of God which was given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building on it. But each man must be careful how he builds on it.For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each man’s work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man’s work.If any man’s work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward. If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.Joel 2:25-27“Then I will make up to you for the yearsThat the swarming locust has eaten,The creeping locust, the stripping locust and the gnawing locust,My great army which I sent among you.You will have plenty to eat and be satisfiedAnd praise the name of the Lord your God,Who has dealt wondrously with you; Then My people will never be put to shame. Many of us crucify ourselves between two thieves - regret for the past and fear of the future. - Early 20th Century journalist Fulton OurslerJulie:Different personalities - perfectionistDon't live your life regretting yesterday. Live your life so tomorrow you won't regret today. -Author Catherine PulsiferWe must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regretor disappointment. - American entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker Jim Rohn► Regret is an emotion that needs to be managed properly.⇔ Studies using (MRI) to scan the brain in real time while participants performed computer tasks that asked them to choose between different options for investing money. When participants were shown how they could have done better with alternative strategies (to incite regret), there was decreased activity in the area associated with processing rewards. There was also increased activity in the part of the brain that generates immediate emotional response to threat. Dangers of regret:Stops you from trying things. Can lead to depression. Can cause physical problems such as ulcers.Keeps you from properly evaluating error in situations. The less opportunity one has to change the situation, the more likely it is that regret can turn into rumination and chronic stress that damages mind and body.- Melanie Greenberg, Ph.D. (Clinical Psychologist)Keys to handling regret:Can you do something about it now?Don’t emotionally take on others regret. You can offer suggestions but don’t internalize it.Retrain your mind to force it away from the thoughts of regret that you can’t do anything about now.Believe that God can redeem anything!Julie: People make statements like “I’ll never get over it” or I’ll never be the same”Sometimes there is a process in the redeeming process. We have to recognize actions or words that caused regret♦Philippians 3:13Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead♦Is There Any Value in Regret?Study 1Researchers scanned the brains of three groups of subjects using fMRI technology: Young people with average age 25, healthy older people with average age 66, and depressed older people, also 66 on average. All participants worked on a computer game during the brain scan in which they had to decide whether to keep opening boxes or rest. Each box could contain an amount of money or could contain a devil emblem that meant they lost all their money and ended that round of the game.To incite regret, researchers showed people after each round how far they could have gone to earn more money. There were substantial differences in brain functioning between the healthy elderly and the other groups. On both appearance of the devil and being shown lost opportunities, the young and depressed elderly showed decreased neural activity in the ventral stri-a-dem, the area associated with reward processing. The healthy elderly did not, however, show this regretful pattern when they were shown how far they could have gone; only when they actually lost all their money. Instead, when faced with their missed alternatives, this group actually showed increased neural firing in the Anterior Cingulate Cortex, an area involved in emotional regulation and control. This suggests that their brains were actively working to successfully regulate the pain of regret.Study 2Researchers at Northwestern University, a leader in the field of regret research, found that younger people have shown that regret was rated more favorably than unfavorably, primarily because of its informational value in motivating corrective action.Interestingly, regret was rated highest of a list of negative emotions in fulfilling five functions:(1) making sense of the world(2) avoiding future negative behaviors(3) gaining insight(4) achieving social harmony(5) improving ability to approach desired opportunities
In this episode, we take another cut against the ever-present anxiety in our world by talking about brain health. I begin by reading ‘The Very Temporary Nature of Suffering’ from my book, Surrendering to Joy. It’s just a reminder that no matter how you move in life, there will be dukkha – or suffering – as the Buddhists like to say. When we just plain accept that, some of the sting goes away. Hopefully this will help you relieve a little stress … Melanie Greenberg is a PhD who has discovered how we can build resilience against stress in our day to day life – or, as she likes to put it, a ‘stress-proof brain’. As it turns out, we have brains that are wired more to keep us safe than to provide a non-stop stream of joy. And so, we need to learn to manage that stress-orientation. Here’s what I learned in chatting with Melanie: What triggering is from a brain perspective, and why it matters How mindfulness as a day to day practice can build this stress resiliency The connection between every day meditation and long term mindfulness Why we get into negative mindsets and how to de-fuse them Some important daily tools we can use to build our resilience against stress How to prepare for potentially stressful events BIO Melanie Greenberg PhD is a practicing psychologist and expert on stress management, health and relationship challenges. She is also the author of The Stress-Proof Brain (New Harbinger) – an Amazon bestseller in Neuropsychology, Stress-Management, and Health. She also writes The Mindful Self-Express blog, which has over 8 million page views, for Psychology Today. A popular media expert, she has been featured on CNN, Forbes, BBC radio, ABC News, Yahoo, Lifehacker, and the Huffington Post, as well as in Business Insider, Self, Redbook, Women’s Health, Men’s Health, Fitness Magazine, Women’s Day, and Marie Claire.

Today’s episode continues on the theme from the first episode--The Magic in the Brain. All the answers to dealing with the unprecedented level of stress that is part of life in the digital age lie here, and before moving on to other related topics, it behooves us to understand this critical point. Our guest Dr. Melanie Greenberg is very special to me. Her work and writings have had an enormous effect on my own understanding of this topic and her best-selling book, The Stress Proof Brain is featured in my book along with a profile of Dr Greenberg. She is a clinical psychologist in Mill Valley, California, an author, speaker and executive coach. In addition, she writes a blog for Psychology Today called the Mindful Self-Express. She treats the whole person, focusing on mind, body, and spirit. With her patients and in her writings, she stresses modern neuroscience along with mindfulness and other techniques. Her bio is extensive and I encourage our listeners to go to her website, drmelaniegreenberg.com for a fuller appreciation of her and her work than time allow today. So simply stated, yet, near the top of life’s greatest challenges. In a previous episode, we explored this topic and the magic that resides in the brain. Unfortunately, darkness also resides in the brain, and this is at the root of the global epidemic of stress and anxiety that is taking such a toll on both our mental and physical health. The toll includes more lost to opioid overdoses last year alone than the combined wars of Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan alone. America is now second only to Mexico in obesity. The Center for Disease Control says that 4 out 10 Americans have a Body Mass Index that qualifies them as obese. In my new book, I call pills, alcohol, food, binge-shopping false wizards---means of coping by those who have difficulty with the pace of life today in the digital age. In this episode you will learn: Many addictive behaviors such as drinking, smoking, taking drugs, overeating, and overindulging in shopping or sex are, at their root, attempts to avoid the uncomfortable emotions from stress. Emotional eating is directly linked to cortisol levels and stress. Studies show that persons under chronic stress can age prematurely, up to 10 years sooner than peers. Mindfulness has the potential to make not only individuals, but businesses, institutions and societies stress-proof. Your breath is the most common anchor in learning and adopting mindfulness into your life. Adult brains can be re-wired through a process called neuroplasticity. Mindfulness, practiced 30 minutes per day, can actually shrink your amygdala You can become the CEO of your own brain, keep your prefrontal cortex firmly in charge, and make your brain less reactive to stress. You can generate inner calm, build healthy lifestyle habits, and facilitate clear thinking. A stress-resilient brain is the best thing you can have for staying focused, fit, connected, and on top of your game. If I had to choose one tool, it would be mindfulness. http://www.drmelaniegreenberg.com/ Don't forget to subscribe to the show!

Show Notes: Melanie’s journey and how she came to become so interested in the stress and the mind-body connection A fixed-mindset vs. and open mindset When facing new demands, it requires figuring out new ways to cope Human tendency when faced with stressors to go to “fight, flight or freeze” – to focus on all the things that could go wrong Anxiety, fear and anger can cause you to get stuck; people cling to stability Thoughts, feelings + actions can actually change the structure of your brain, causing you to automatically become more reactive, with less ability to calm down your stress response through logical thinking Techniques to be more self-compassionate and bring yourself back to the present when faced with a stressor: grounding + mindfulness Mind-body connection tactics like placing both feet on the floor and just breathing + sitting with your thoughts We can’t control our subconscious programming or thinking, the thoughts that come into our head, but rather than be ashamed, you an change your relationship to them: “you are not your thoughts” If you have feelings of low self-worth, must understand where comes from and then fight it – focus on positive Take time to ask the emotion what it needs, without judgement Physiological effects of stressors on the brain Consequences or mistakes that occur when someone doesn’t face their true emotions Perfectionism and “conditional self-esteem” + the need to look for the grey Putting our own problems in perspective and focusing on the positive “Instead of just running from the tiger to smell the flower” Life is a combination of appreciating and enjoy what you have, find points of peace, and you strive for more Melanie’s Uphill challenge + optimism for next 12 months Connect with Melanie: Website: drmelaniegreenberg.com Melanie Greenberg’s Blog Resources: Alicia Aberley Podcast #35 INTRO AND OUTRO MUSIC (Used by permission): Dreams Groove (© 2017 Tim Pecoraro) Straight Drive (© 2017 Tim Pecoraro) Uphill Conversations is an Uphill Strategies, LLC production © 2017 Uphill Conversations The post 75: Dr. Melanie Greenberg – The Stress-Proof Brain appeared first on Uphill Conversations.
This week’s guest is Dr. Melanie Greenberg, psychologist, speaker, and author of “The Stress-Proof Brain: Master Your Emotional Response to Stress Using Mindfulness & Neuroplasticity.” She has been a guest on numerous media outlets including CNN, Forbes, BBC Radio, Lifehacker, Huffington Post, and much more. We had an interesting chat about the events that actually occur in our brains when we experience stress, and how knowledge of this can potentially help to mitigate some of the unwanted symptoms that show up in our daily lives. What you might not know is that modern neuroscience has produced some very interesting research that suggests that we can essentially train our brains, much like muscles, to become more bulletproof to stress via mindfulness training, and you’ll get some great insight from Melanie about how to do so! Highlights of this episode include: — What exactly is mindfulness and how can it help us become more resilient to stress? — What are all the parts of the brain that process stress, anxiety, and emotions? — How even just a little knowledge of neuroscience can help to ease anxiety — Melanie’s personal story of how she began studying stress and the brain

Today our guest expert is Dr. Melanie Greenberg, who specializes in managing stress, love, and relationships using proven techniques from neuroscience, mindfulness, and positive psychology. She uses these techniques to educate, support, heal, and inspire people so that they can overcome emotional barriers to fulfilling their potential. In Dr. Greenberg's bestselling book, The Stress-Proof Brain: Master Your Emotional Response to Stress Using Mindfulness and Neuroplasticity, she examines health through the lens of the biopsychosocial model. Basically, she looks at mental health and health as the combined effects of your mind, body, and spirit. How does the biopsychosocial approach work in practice? For example, someone may comes into Dr. Greenberg's practice with chronic pain. This pain makes them feel helpless and depressed, and this puts a strain on their social relationships. All of that can make the objective experience of the pain worse. In treating this person, Dr. Greenberg would try to move them away from strictly using medicine to cure their pain, explain how stress can worsen physical pain, help them see how their thoughts and feelings affect the pain (so that they might feel less helpless), and coach them to interact with social relationships in a way that would empower the theoretical patient. Everything interacts. Exploring The Stress-Proof Brain Dr. Greenberg describes stress as an automatic response that can trigger you into a state of flight or fight, in which you fall into an automatic response pattern. In the book, she offers readers tools they can use to manage that response and, instead, leverage its positive aspects. By taking advantage of neuroplasticity, or your brain's ability to change through experience, you can rewire your brain to shift from responses that promote stress to healthier responses. This is important on many levels. On a biological level, stress can literally be a killer – it creates inflammation, changes blood pressure, depress the immune system, and more. In the short-term, this isn't terribly harmful. In the long term, continued stress can erode your immune system, develop into significant inflammation in the pathways going to your heart, and affect your glucose production. The negative results of stress can also compound other health problems, or other symptoms of stress. On a social level, stress can make people angry, argumentative, and more likely to saying things they regret. It can get in the way of relationships and drive people away. On top of all that, we often have unhealthy responses to stress. Sometimes we drink to excess, over eat, stop exercising, and generally stop taking care of ourselves. Those unhealthy cycles just add to the feedback loop. One powerful tool for lessening or relieving stress is mindfulness. Mindfulness is meditation, but it's also much more – it's an attitude. “Mindfulness is an open, compassionate attitude towards your own inner experience.” –Dr. Melanie Greenberg Mindfulness will teach you to see your judging thoughts, negativity, reactivity, and fear, and then create some distance between you and those responses so that you understand that those thoughts don't define you. If make that a regular practice then, over time, you can learn the difference between your direct experience in the body and the judging thoughts that you cling to. As a result, you will be able to decrease the power of negative thoughts over your life. As you develop familiarity with mindfulness, you can employ it to change your life at work, online, and in relationships. The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway Stress is a natural part of life. It doesn't have to own you – it doesn't have to get in the way of your health and happiness. If you learn to manage your brain's automatic fight or flight response then you can put an end to unhealthy responses to stress, become more mindful, and develop greater compassion. You can start the rewiring process by beginning a mindfulness practice today, even if it's just five minutes a day. The most important part of the practice is consistency. You can begin to learn mindfulness through a specific type of meditation: Focus on your breath as an anchor and watch it go in and out During this process, your breath will naturally slow down As you're trying to watch your breath, your mind will likely wander to a judging thought (e.g. this isn't working, I'm not doing this properly) In the moment that you can catch that thought, notice that you're having it and bring your attention back to the breath You now have a little bit more power over how you focus your attention and a little bit more self-awareness -- Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster.
