In this podcast episode, Meredith Brough, a pediatric sleep expert, talks about a parenting concern that is becoming more common. Many parents feel anxious and scared when their babies cry; they are afraid that even normal expressions of emotion might be harmful. A contributing factor is our society's obsession with sleep training practices that are rigid, rule based, and involve periods of crying from gentle to intense. Parents are questioning these practices and searching for solutions that are nurturing and relationship centered. They are asking themselves: "To cry or not to cry? To sleep or not to sleep? In this episode, Meredith shares her personal experiences with tear-free sleep techniques and explains why they were created in the first place. She debunks the belief that parents should avoid tears completely and emphasizes the significance of being responsive and providing comfort and love to improve babies' sleep, instead.Meredith discusses various situations when babies cry to signal different needs, such as hunger, physical discomfort, the need for sleep, and other times when crying is an expression of emotion. She emphasizes the importance of parents learning to interpret these cries to respond appropriately to their infants' needs. By doing so, parents can foster a sense of security and trust with their babies, which is crucial for healthy development.Meredith shares anecdotes about the challenges and triumphs of implementing her tear-free sleep techniques. These methods involve a nurturing approach that prioritizes the baby's emotional well-being. She explains that there are important principles behind her methods that matter more than avoiding tears. The techniques she describes include preparing the child for transitions, being sensitive and careful as changes are made, choosing solutions that are appropriate for the child's temperament, and listening to your intuition, instincts, and being in tune with your child's needs and feelings.Throughout the episode, Meredith addresses common concerns and misconceptions about infant sleep and offers reassurance to parents who may be struggling with sleep-related issues. The show will help you walk away with a deeper understanding of how to lovingly and effectively support your babies' sleep needs, armed with strategies that prioritize comfort, loving responsiveness, and best of all, your child's well-being.Topics: Infant communication through cryingExamples of normal cryingWhat to avoid with sleep training that is damagingChoosing between tear-free or gentle methods and what really mattersThe importance of responsivenessProviding comfort and love 99% of the timeWhy 99% instead of 100%Why your fears might be misplaced The type of babies who might need a tear free approach to sleep better and whyHow to improve sleep using a peaceful approach Have you taken the Sleep Temperament Quiz?Learn more about your child's nature and why they are waking often. Welcome back to "Parenting the Intensity!"In this episode, we are having an insightful conversation with sleep coach, Meredith Brough, on the latest episode of Parenting the Intensity podcast. We dive deep into the challenges of sleep for parents, especially when it comes to emotionally intense children. If you're a parent struggling with sleep challenges with your emotionally intense children, this episode is a must-listen!Here are 3 key takeaways from this episode:1️⃣ Recognize that every child has unique sleep needs: There is no one-size-fits-all approach to parenting, especially when it comes to sleep. Children have different needs and personalities, and it's crucial to understand and support their individual development. Embrace the fact that your child's sleep patterns may be different from others, and focus on finding what works best for them.2️⃣ Foster independence with love and understanding: While different parenting approaches have their merits, it's important to find a middle ground that respects both the baby's needs and the mother's needs. Foster your child's independence in a healthy way that is tailored to their readiness, while still providing the love, comfort, and connection they need.3️⃣ Prioritize parent and child well-being: Meredith approach is centered on the child well-being, but that also includes the parent well-being as exhausted parents will find it difficult to be their best for their children, so she's suggesting a way to reconcile the needs of everyone while sleeping better!"But also, there's that pressure of comparing your child to another, thinking it's all on you, thinking that you're the one responsible for their progress and for them to perform well..."Resources referenced by MeredithHighly sensitive Family - Natalie BrunswickNeuro-Sensory Based Parenting - Brooke WeinsteinWhere to find MeredithWebsite - Code "Intensity" will give you 10% off on Meredith's offersPodcast Sweet LumberFacebookInstagramShow notes and transcript of the episode over hereMake sure to subscribe to our podcast for future episodes and leave a rating and review, that helps us get in front of more parents. Sleep. It's one thing we can't do without (at least not gracefully) and the one thing that seems to elude us after becoming a parent. Thanks to people like Meredith Brough, there are solutions out there that can help restore sleep for both you and your baby. Meredith is a mother of five and the owner of Sweet Slumber. After struggling to get her first child to sleep, Meredith knew she had to do things differently with her second. After raising her own kids, she transitioned everything she'd learned as a mom and became a full-time sleep coach for parents of babies and young children with sleep problems. In the last five years, Meredith has helped over 500 families reach their sleep goals using her tear-free methods. She also now trains other experts, runs an agency, hosts her own podcast - "The Sweet Slumber Podcast", and runs a large Facebook group for exhausted mothers. Typical sleep training methods often include your baby "crying it out", but this one-size fits all approach doesn't take into account a child's specific needs. In today's episode, Meredith touches on the 5 different temperaments (she has a tear-free sleep method for each one!) and how to be aware of the non-verbal cues your baby is sending. As new parents all we have in our arsenal is experimentation and responding to different things to see what works and what doesn't for our children. And just when we get one kid figured out, the next one comes with a completely new idea of what makes them feel secure. It gets confusing because we have so many messages coming at us telling us what we should do or should not do. In the end, YOU have the most influence on your child's development and Meredith encourages moms to lean into their natural intuition and instincts. Homework assignment from Meredith: "Be in tune with your body throughout the day with your energy level and respond to it. If your eyes are heavy, sleep. Find your body's natural 'tired time' and see how much better you will feel!" Today's episode is the third in a series of interviews discussing the negative and worrisome aspects of traditional sleep training like Ferber and cry-it-out. Meredith Brough, sleep coach and childcare expert, interviews Sarah R. Moore, MFS and parenting expert, about her stand on this important topic. This series is meant to empower parents to make the best parenting decisions possible when it comes to sleep. Old-fashioned sleep training methods teach parents to Ignore their children's cries (no matter the type of cry), hold back comfort, and force little ones to become independent, whether or not they are ready for it. Parents often set aside their connection with their children while using these methods. These methods can cause lasting consequences for many babies and toddlers. We'd like to hear what the experts say about these issues and other concerns that they might have, as well as discuss positive, supportive ways to improve sleep. You're in for a treat today! Sarah brings up concerns that haven't come up on the show previously, that are eye-opening and enlightening. She also shares her perspective about using sleep training methods as a parent and being on the receiving end, as a young child. You won't want to miss this captivating conversation between Meredith and her guest! You'll find yourself crying one moment and laughing the next. Learn insight that will help you make the best decisions for your child's long term well-being and help you become a better parent. Meredith Brough is a sleep coach, childcare expert and mother of five. She developed natural sleep coaching skills while caring for children in her in-home daycare and raising her babies for 15 years. In 2017, she turned her passion for helping mothers and young children into a full-time career by founding her company, Sweet Slumber. Meredith worked with local families in their homes for several months, then suddenly found herself working with people from all over the world on FaceTime. This is when she began working with challenging, sensitive children which is now her specialty.
No parent wants to see their child struggle. But there's a point when our help isn't actually helping them learn the skills they need to be responsible, resilient adults down the road. Coming to their rescue every time they forget something at home... Resolving arguments with friends for them... Once or twice is not an issue. But when it becomes an all-the-time thing, it can set them up to be the college kid whose mom calls their teacher because they didn't get the grade they wanted. Yikes! So how do we teach them to be resilient when all we want to do is protect them? That's what my guest Meredith Brough and I discuss in this episode. Meredith has a lot of experience raising children and working with children. She's been married for 24 years and has 5 children ranging from 12 to 21-years-old. She also has over 30 years of experience caring for kids in various roles, as a nanny, preschool teacher, running a daycare from her home, and more. We talk about: Some of the challenges and obstacles that she experienced raising her five kids Some ways that moms sometimes try to make things “perfect and protect our children from reality” and How we can stop doing this so much The importance of resilience and learning consequences for kids How to know the balance of teaching and protecting and how she’s tried to teach her children to “struggle well” Connect with Meredith: www.sweetslumbertime.com www.instagram.com/sweetslumbertime www.facebook.com/sweetslumbertime For show notes and resources mentioned: http://www.gotchamama.com GOTCHA MAMA INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/gotchamama/ GOTCHA MAMA FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/gotchamama/
