These people will start to feel frustrated; they know that they are doing great work so why people aren't spending more on it. Or wondering "all of my friends love me yet why aren't they referring me?". The problem Michael sees is when they talk about things that they think is interesting and they don't talk to it in the context of what they are actually doing for the client. In his opinion about the term 'influence' is that most people think of it in the context of persuasion. Michael says that true influence is when you do something without me asking you to do it. The only reason you're going to do that, is if it makes you look good. We have to think about how we package our ideas & concepts that can make other people look good when they share it. Michael began his career in education teaching High School English before breaking into the world of Broadway producing. He made this transition in less than two years prompting colleagues to ask him how he did it. He loves being there for his little ones.  [04:09] Getting referrals is pushing people to do things. Being referable is having people share your thoughts and ideas for you. As a result of this sharing, people just start coming to you.  [05:00] It's how people are talking about you and your ideas when you're not there.  [07:51] What is the emotional driver that makes you so excited that you want to tell everybody about it? It comes down to feeling like you're doing a favor for the person behind the company.  [08:32] True influence is when people will do things without being asked. Have something that's actually useful for the person it's being shared with. [09:08] Think about how sharing your information would make the person doing the sharing look. Podcasts get shared because people want their friends to know about the great information that they heard.  [12:28] People can tell if you're being authentic with the ideas you share. You need to believe in whatever you're putting out there.  [15:38] We don't know what people are going to hook onto. We have to listen to what the market has to say.  [17:02] There are three main principles to becoming a referable brand. They are accessibility, influence, and memory. You can think about it as taking AIM.  [17:29] Accessibility is the first hurdle that we have. Make sure that you are understood by people outside of your industry.  [23:00] With influence we're almost always thinking about the concept of persuasion. People don't share things because they are persuaded or pushed towards it. They share because it makes them look better. [25:28] Think about what's out there and how your point of view could shift things a bit. What's the slight variation of the concept that everybody gets that you can create to add to it? [29:11] Sharing has the power to change someone's reputation. People want to share the things that are going to make them look better. [30:58] People don't want to share things that aren't simple and take too long to share.  [32:59] We spend so much time trying to tell a story well. Memory is a key factor in whether people will retail the story or not. If you want people to remember you more then focus on less.  [33:47] Language. Come up with your own language and the words that express your specific concepts. Give people words that refer back to you. [36:28] Emotion solidifies memory. It's part of our biological makeup. When we're at heightened states of emotion we remember more details. Take the time to tap into the emotion. [38:00] Simplicity. Give your audience away to simplify what you're trying to share with them. [39:41] Structure. We need a logical progression in order to share things. [41:05] Being the best is important, but it doesn't necessarily translate into being a referral brand. Showing your expertise is so much more powerful than telling people about it. You do this by developing your own framework and concepts. Michael got his first taste of entrepreneurship in high school. To help raise money for the English department, he organized a battle of the bands fundraiser. He learned basic business skills such as event management, planning, organizing and marketing. He continued these skills in college while studying English and theatre. He noticed that his fellow theatre students struggled with interviews and networking so, he helped them market themselves.After college, Michael taught high school English and ran a theatre company in New York. During this time, he built relationships with people in Broadway and taught workshops. In just two years, Michael went from teaching high school to being a Broadway producer. As a producer, He had to know how to market himself and the plays in his portfolio to entice investors. Michael took these skills and transferred them into his workshops to help his clients. He calls his method referable branding. His idea expanded into a full-time consulting business, Small Pond Enterprises. From the arts to the business world, Michael helps clients with networking and interviewing skills to advance their careers. The framework behind referable branding comes from three basic principles. Accessibility, Influence and Memorability. Michael calls the framework “taking AIM”. How do you make yourself accessible to others outside of your industry? How can your idea influence others? Mike Roderick has always been interested in solving problems and looking at things differently. His elementary school teachers said he had an overactive imagination, creating entire worlds out of a box of crayons.  Once he got to high school, Mike took a more entrepreneurial approach as he was often initiating and pulling things together. For instance, he noticed that the English department had far less funding that the sports department had, so he came up with the idea to have a battle of the bands’ fundraiser for his school’s English department, and filled the entire auditorium. Mike jokes that it's the night he beat George Lucas. The actual date for the Battle of the Bands had been set for when Return of the Jedi was being released. So they changed the date and then the movie theaters changed the date again. The school went ahead with the battle of the bands. Mike packed the auditorium, raising a lot of money for the English department. So, from a marketing standpoint, when somebody talks about the idea of investing in yourself you have a completely different level of emotional resonance than somebody saying ‘Spend money on this.’” (19:10) “I’m very bullish on the idea of frameworks over formulas.” (26:02) “When I broke it down, I realized that a referable brand has three factors. And it’s easy to remember because it spells the word ‘aim.’ And that’s Accessibility, Influence, and Memory.” (31:15) “If technology changes, if the way that something’s structured changes, if the tool that you’re using to collect money suddenly has a glitch or has a particular issue, you’re going to have a different business in another couple of years.” (40:38) “If you are going to engage in some sort of referral monetary relationship, you want to make sure people know that that relationship exists.” (54:36) “The way I think about it [Zen Money] is this idea of sort of ‘money calm,’ where, when you think about meditation and when you think about being relaxed there’s this dynamic of breathing well and everything is sort of just calm.” (1:00:57) About Michael: When Michael went from high school teacher to Broadway producer in under two years people started to ask him how he managed it. This episode features Michael Roderick, founder of Small Pond Enterprises and Host of the Access to Anyone Podcast. Michel is a coach and consultant who knows how to design conversations large and small. We talk about closing the loop on free advice (let people know if if it works…otherwise we'll keep giving bad advice!), teaching through simulations and how to see patterns and build frameworks. Michael sends a daily (yes, daily!) email that I actually read! His claim to fame is that he went from High School English Teacher to Broadway producer in under 2 years, which is fast for *any* career shift, let alone a jump like that. I first learned about Michael's work years ago through his conference, ConnectorCon, which he designed to build a safe space to talk and connect, and to learn what it takes to be a great connector. One of the reasons I was excited to bring Michael on the show is that he sees the world through a lens of frameworks, just like me! And we hit on several key ideas that resonate with some components of my Conversation OS, which is always nice. The Power (and limits of) Narrative. We live our lives through the stories we tell. Stories help us build connections and relationships, but they can also limit us. A positive self-story feels better than a negative story, but it can also limit us and tell us what is and isn't possible. It's worth asking for time to time “what stories are serving me? What narrative can help me build a new future and a new identity? What do I believe is possible? What do I *not* try, because I believe it's impossible?”   The Cadence of Connection. We talk about how Community is a resource you *can* draw from if you've built it up over time…and how you need to build it before you need it. Like sleep, it's something you have to do regularly.     What's On TV (or…the importance of perspective) Michael has many, many great aphorisms, but this one is amazing. The idea is that you will always be too close to your own issues to solve them… unless you take time to pull back and see the big picture. This is also why we're always better at solving other people's problems! And why having a coach is essential.   Competition doesn't exist… just specialization and niches. We are in competition with ourselves, each of us trying to find our own niche. But watch out! All specializations aren't compatible…what's interesting about this to me is the idea that if we can't connect with someone, it's not always because of anything other than incompatible approaches, not something “wrong” with you or them.     The Power of Invitation. As Michael points out, “People love to feel useful, but they hate to feel used.” Pressure never works well as an engagement tactic, at least not in the long term. Asking permission, asking nicely and giving people the option to say no gives people choice and allows them to choose to be highly engaged.
