Let me confess something to you right now — I have my share of weaknesses.I'm sure you're not shocked to hear that. We all do, right? But I don't go ‘all in' on improving them. Instead, I focus on my strengths. I learned this lesson from John Maxwell long ago.He said, “We're taught to be well-rounded and to improve our weaknesses. However, in many arenas of life, we naturally perform poorly. Even with hard work, we will never become better than average in them. The reality is that people don't pay for average. No one gets excited to dine out at an average restaurant, to spend two hours watching an average movie, or to hire someone with average abilities.”I've internalized that and live that in my career. So I was excited when I saw the podcast guest application from my latest guest, and wanted to talk to this kindred spirit to learn how he has taken this approach in his – quite successful – career. But with all due respect to Maxwell, I like how my latest guest worded it even better – “focus on your left foot.” To learn the story behind that lesson, along with many more lesson-filled stories, I spoke with Asim Zaheer, Chief Marketing Officer, Nasuni (https://www.nasuni.com/).Since its founding, Nasuni has raised $169 million, with the latest funding round a $25 million investment in which all previous investors participated, including Goldman Sachs, Telstra Ventures, and Northbridge Venture Partners.Nasuni is above $100 million in annual recurring revenue and Zaheer manages a marketing budget of approximately 10% of that revenue.

Andres Rodriguez is the founder and CTO of Nasuni, and has served in multiple executive roles including CTO at the New York Times and CTO and Hitachi Data Systems.
Andres Rodriguez is the founder and CTO of Nasuni, a cloud file storage provider. He is also the former CTO for the New York Times. We last spoke a few years ago, and I was eager to invite him back onto Tech Talks Daily for a catchup. Andres talks about why ransomware has finally pushed back up to the breaking point. Backup, especially as the last line of defense against disasters like ransomware, is dead and ineffective. If it's taking an enterprise or organization 2 weeks to recover their files (because they are following “best practices”) and suddenly paying the ransom seems like a good idea for business continuity, then the model is broken. Prevention is no longer enough. It's the detection and, most importantly, recovery. Unfortunately, the IT silos and no one wanting to take responsibility for recovery exacerbates the problem, causing it to fall between the cracks. As ransomware attacks continue into the new year, the traditional backup will be more widely exposed as entirely inadequate for business continuity and minimizing disruption to the business. But we discuss how cloud-native, global file systems can make a recovery in minutes possible, not days or weeks.
If you are a Venture Capitalist, you are most likely looking for entrepreneurs who can identify problems ahead of the market, but of course not too-too early. And, you're looking for founders who are uniquely qualified to solve those problems, plus build a world class company at scale. It's a tall ask, but entrepreneurs like Andres are made for this. He's a serial entrepreneur who loves hard tech. He likes the technical challenges that most people don't have the expertise or desire to solve. He has built many successful companies and the common thread is his ability to see how the market will evolve and in his case how it will evolve around the world of data storage, especially in the cloud. His latest company, Nasuni, is the world's first cloud-native global file system. As previously noted, being early to market can be a competitive advantage and this is certainly the case for Nasuni, as the company has been growing at a very rapid pace. In this episode of our podcast, we cover: * A fun discussion about a failed startup that Andres was building with his brother, Antonio, which was aiming at solving the problem of home media storage for consumers which was a very different landscape back in 2000. * How his graduate work in Physics at Boston University helped shape the foundation of his expertise. * The details on Abuzz, a first generation social media company, that was acquired by The New York Times. * Building Archivas, the first enterprise-class cloud storage system which was acquired by Hitachi. * All the details on Nasuni - from its creation to it's aggressive growth plans ahead. * Advice on hiring and building out a company's initial engineering team. * And so much more. Nasuni enables organizations to store, protect, synchronize, and collaborate on files across all locations at scale. Nasuni Cloud File Services™, powered by the Nasuni UniFS® global file system, leverages cloud storage to modernize primary NAS and file server storage; archiving; backup; and disaster recovery, while offering transformational new capabilities for multi-site file sharing. By combining the low cost, unlimited capacity, and durability of object storage from leading cloud vendors such as Amazon, Azure, Dell EMC, and IBM, with the high performance, security, and broad application compatibility of traditional file storage, the Nasuni subscription service improves workforce productivity, simplifies IT operations, and reduces IT costs. The world’s largest companies in 12 industry sectors rely on Nasuni to maximize the business value of their file data and ensure business continuity. Traditional backups, often an organization’s last line of defense again a disaster, are outdated and costing them time and money. Configuring incremental and full backup schedules, or pulling backups across the WAN to a central site, are cumbersome at best, unreliable at worst. So are babysitting backups to find out if they worked, and rotating and refreshing tape and disk media. And in the end, it still takes days or hours to recover. David Shaw, chief science officer of Nasuni, discusses the alternatives to backups. We talk about continuous file versioning, which continuously loads file deltas to the cloud for safe and easily accessible storage, making the recovery processes easier, and more critically, faster (within minutes), minimizing costly downtime. David also shares real-life anecdotes about customers who were able to recover files within minutes and maintain productivity without breaking stride.
Data Protection Gumbo presents our morning news digest with top stories in the industry for today.
When the New York Times launched its first web presence, new CTO Andres Rodriguez faced a major challenge – how to scale web services from 10,000 internal users to millions of subscribers. Andres’ IT team could have purchased racks of web servers and load balancers. But building out The Times’ data center wouldn’t withstand the massive number of hits to its site when a major story broke. Instead, Andres turned to Akamai, whose use of the internet to replicate and cache content globally provided scale a single enterprise couldn’t match. His early use of what is now considered a cloud service was a huge success. As The Times began digitizing more of its content and production workflows, Andres soon encountered his next big challenge – how to store, protect, and manage the files that were doubling in size and number every year. He could have purchased racks of NetApp NAS devices, backup solutions, and disaster recovery infrastructure. But this hardware-based model could no longer support the magnitude of file growth. A new file services approach uniting the performance and access of NetApp with the scalability, stability, and global reach of Akamai was needed. Andres’ idea for “NAS Unified” – Nasuni – was born. Andres Rodriguez, founder, and CTO of Nasuni and former CTO of the New York Times joins me on my daily tech podcast to discuss what enterprises can do to ensure their data and cloud storage is AI-ready Unstructured data is a growing source of value, but traditional ways of storing, sharing and protecting the data--especially across multiple locations--are not keeping up with the demand for lower cost, more efficient and smarter infrastructure. Andres outlines steps organizations can take to harness unstructured data for new capabilities, including how to modernize your applications for high-performance while placing files and metadata correctly, so scaling will still be cost-effective. Andres can also shares a few anecdotes on how global firms in engineering, architecture, construction, and other industries were able to take these steps to accelerate digital transformation.
