My heart goes out to the families of those who were injured or lost their lives at the Astroworld concert. I pray that there will be healing for the individuals who have experienced irreversible devastation. This situation could have been prevented if there was greater consideration and attention to detail in the planning of the event, and I hope that public pressure will bring about the necessary safety measures to protect and prioritize human life. Culture Unfiltered discusses this event in more detail: https://www.tiktok.com/@cultureunfiltered/video/7027517731734015278?lang=en&is_copy_url=1&is_from_webapp=v1 Wait! There's more! This month I'll be reviewing Christian artists who are making music in several genres - including EDM, country, and KPOP! On my Patreon, I'll review recent albums by my childhood faves, Nicole C. Mullen and Nichole Nordeman. I hope you enjoy it! Let me know your thoughts on the music I shared and recommend some more Christian artists for me to shout out! Disclaimer(s): First, I want apologize for any audio issues in advance. Also, I don't know any of these people, so I'm not speaking on anyone's behalf. I just make comments based on the words and actions of others. I don't intend to cause harm or offense, but I apologize for any words which could have communicated a lack of empathy or intentional thoughtlessness. Please respectfully let me know what I could have said better or seen in a different light. I want to keep learning so I can create opportunities for conversation and change, and I hope that you will grow with me. Corrections/Clarifications: Nicole C. Mullen's song is called "Call on Jesus" NOT "When I Call on Jesus" *facepalm* (I won't change the name of the top tier though) I enjoyed Ninano's M/V a lot more during my most recent rewatch, but I'm still missing that something from Minzy, you know? Maybe my expectations of dancers in Kpop groups are too high? After recording and seeing the lyrics of Superwoman, I realized that the song might've leaned more towards "Spring" (Park Bom's than "Flower Shower." However, neither Minzy's vocal and stage performance didn't feel very emotional, to me. I didn't see or hear her journey from heartbreak to triumph. I didn't catch the lyrics for Brittney Spencer's Da** Right, You're Wrong at all. This song is a fun twist on the "Be Yourself" anthems we've seen before. Lori Triplett is an independent singer/songwriter based out of Nashville, TN. A small town Ohio native, Lori has written, co-produced, and released two full-length albums. Her debut album, Dawn, (2004) comprised of songs Lori wrote in high school and her freshman year of college, was one of her first experiences in the recording studio. This eventually led her to relocate to Nashville, TN, in 2005 where she completed her college degree and eventually recorded her sophomore album, Safe Place to Land (2009), co-produced by Lee J. Turner, long-time band mate for Darius Rucker. More recently, she has written and released 2 singles, Crooked Heart (2017), co-produced by Jim Stewart and Tennessee (2018), co-produced by Foster Ferrell. Her forthcoming EP, Slow Poison, (produced by Chad Carouthers) which Triplett wrote or co-wrote all the songs for, will release in October 2020, with the project’s first two singles, Same Pain and Out the Back Door, out now on all major platforms. Lori credits her interest and growth in music to her parents, who took notice of her interest in the piano at an early age and surprised her with weekly piano lessons starting at age 7. Until recently, Lori spent most years of her music career writing and performing in the Christian music scene, but she also always kept a backlog of secular music going as well. And although her music still has undertones of her deeply-rooted faith, her sound has evolved away from a heavier piano sound into more of a Singer/Songwriter, Alternative, Americana style, as she has been learning to play acoustic guitar and is doing much of her songwriting on the acoustic. Influenced and inspired over the years by an immeasurable amount of various artists and songwriters like Patty Griffin, Kate Walsh, Nichole Nordeman, Tori Amos, Dan Fogelberg, Joni Mitchell, Paul Williams, Mariah Carey, Bethany Dillon, Sarah McLachlan, and Jewel, her songs are honest, intimate, vulnerable, and aim right for the heart. I'm with author and OG Blissdom friend Robin Dance! Robin bares all during our time together--including a season where she considered leaving the church and her faith, the trauma of losing her mom at 9, and how chronic people-pleasing left her feeling like a fake.  Robin's vulnerability and transparency in this episode will help us find the life-lines we need during times of doubt and how to let our questions point us back to God.   In this episode we discuss: 1. Why taking offense often may be a symptom of something bigger. 2. The time she caught the eye of Harry Conninck Jr. 3. How our doubt can bring us back to God.    Favorite quotes: 1. Your doubts could be the very thing He is using to call you back to Him. 2. As a woman of faith, I should be living to please God not anyone else. 3. Where you are today, you will not be here forever. God will use this hard situation and turn it around for your good.   In this episode I answer these questions: 1. Can we really learn to stop self-sabotage?  (35:40) 2. How do you find joy in life when God isn't answering your prayers? (41:15) 3. How do you know if you are cut out for business? It may not have been a banner football year for A&M and State, but that hasn't done much to diminish our collective BigBoo college football enthusiasm. Given that, you won't be surprised to hear us spend some time talking about last weekend's SEC Championship game as well as Ole Miss' recent head coaching hire. We realize that it might not be the expected reaction, but this Bulldog / Aggie combo is excited about Lane Kiffin's return to the SEC. I think you could even say that we are HERE FOR IT. We also discuss what we love about Chipotle (yes. Chipotle.) along with our thoughts about cooked chicken. And if that weren't enough, Melanie has a new moisturizer to share with the group, not to mention that we have some general enthusiasm about the new season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as well as Nichole Nordeman's new Christmas album. Jillian Jones is a recording singer and songwriter. She's been singing since she was 4, played piano and went to school for a music degree. After getting married she put music on the back burner. She spent 5-6 years away from music completely. During her second pregnancy she had a rough pregnancy with months on bedrest, two days her son was delevered healthy, she was diagnosed with a health scare and that was the catalyst for postpartum anxiety. It was during that time that Jill spent a lot of time in prayer, having to give up control and having to relearn who I was. He made it clear that aside from being a wife and a mom, that I was a musician. She hadn't been a song writer before, but she started there and two albums later, here she is. More from my conversation with Jill: What it's been to be a musician and step into that calling. Getting through postpartum anxiety. Slowly reintegrating music into her life. Obedience in the journey into becoming a recording artist. Life as a recording artist. The life cycle of recording. How Jill stays fresh in her relationship with God as a Christian artist. What her previous album was about. Struggling with faith and doubt and being okay with that. What her next album is about. *This is an affiliate link. Amazon gives me a tiny commission for any purchases through my links at no extra cost to you. Thank you for feeding my family!* Own Your Every Day by Jordan Lee Dooley More about Jill: After her introduction into the music scene in 2016 with her EP album He Is Everything, Jillian Jones recently returned with her first full length debut, Perfectly Clear. Produced by Aaron Ankrum (Aerial View Studios, Minneapolis, MN), the 10-song record features an eclectic blend of piano-driven pop and acoustic singer-songwriter styles reminiscent of Nichole Nordeman, Christy Nockels and Sara Groves with writing that’s honest and accessible for her listeners. Jillian’s love of music began at a young age while singing and playing piano for area churches, events and festivals. Years later, following the birth of her second child, an experience with postpartum anxiety served as a catalyst for the next season in her life. It was then that music became her healing outlet. Shortly after, she began writing music with the intent to record and share her story through song. “I believe that music connects us to each other. Through it, we discover shared joys and struggles, and those common threads remind us that we are not alone.” Jillian lives in Minnesota with her husband, Blake and their two children. In addition to music, she enjoys photography, woodworking, and spending time with her family on the shores of Lake Superior. Should the United States compensate the descendants of African slaves? If so, what should that compensation look like? And what does Christian faith have to say about repentance and reparation for wrongs committed by prior generations? Dr. Theon Hill is back on the show to talk about recent congressional hearings on the matter, and his conversation with Skye might surprise you. Also this week, a church in Indiana is paying off medical debts. For the first time ever, Canada has surpassed the U.S. as the most welcoming country to refugees. That launches Phil and Skye into a history of U.S. immigration policies. Christian singer Nichole Nordeman wrote an open letter to Franklin Graham asking him to send “Operation Christmas Child” shoeboxes to kids in detention centers at the Southern border. Is Graham’s silence a result of his support for Trump and his border policies?  And “love” for Donald Trump is causing a rift among evangelicals.

Chaos is a normal part of life, especially as moms. And it is important that we remember to slow down in the chaos and not wish it all away. You know, those moments spent begging for your little one to walk or talk, to sleep through the night, to hurry up and do the next thing. Because there will come a day when your kids are grown up and you will wish for those moments again. The moments you won’t ever get back; the moments you tried so hard to rush through. Nichole Nordeman is known for her music as a Christian artist but she is also a mother of 2 and author. Her book, Slow Down: Embracing the Everyday Moments of Motherhood, is such a calm and easy read. It's one of those books you’d want to have on your bookshelf to reference here and there when you need a reminder to really be present and just be with your kids. Her mantra is to lower the bar of expectations we place on our lives and to slow down, embracing the everyday moments of life. *Note, if you aren’t a mom, this episode is still for you! Hi friends! So glad you're joining me for episode 41 of Heart Lessons. My guest for today's episode is Nichole Nordeman. I can't even tell you how honored I was to interview someone whose music has been very present, almost theme-like, in some very pivotal seasons of my life. Her musical talent has earned her some very prestigious awards in the Christian music industry but today, our conversation was centered on motherhood and taking the time to slow down and enjoy the moments happening right in front of us, as inspired by her new book, Slow Down. Also, talking about the title track on Nichole's latest album, Every Mile Mattered, allowed us to explore the idea that no part of our story is wasted in God's hands. I wish I could have talked to Nichole so much more about so many things, but I think I'll let those unexplored conversations point you over to her blog and her social media places so that you can get to know her story for yourself. She is an inspiration and a delight and a very talented writer, both musically and otherwise. Thank you again, Nichole, for connecting with me. Heart Lesson: Lean on the Lord. I can't count the number of times lately that I've stopped to catch my breath at the sight of my tiny baby growing into a big kid. She is so tall, so talkative and her personality rivals any adult. I love watching her grow up and become the person she's meant to be and yet I want her to stay small and cuddle in my arms. I often wish there was a way to stop time, or slow down. Parents, ya feel me? That's the subject of singer/songwriter Nichole Nordemans new book, Slow Down. I sat down with Nichole after her recent appearance on Hallmark's Home and Family to talk about the inspiration behind her new book. She says she wrote it for her son Charlie's 5th grade graduation and was encouraged by her manager to record it. The response was overwhelming. It quickly went viral as parents all over the world connected with the message. Now she's taken that message and fleshed it out into essays for her book. In the book she talks about how there's no time machine, or button to push that would make time slow down so our kids will stay small. Instead we should take it upon ourselves to slow down and enjoy as much of the present with our kids as possible. Admittedly in this social media obsessed (guilty!) world we live in its hard to walk away, put your phone down, and be present. This is something I make an effort to do every week in the hopes that my daughter's memories of me won't just be of my phone in front of my face.  And I'm getting there, slowly but surely. Because it seems like every time I blink, she's taller, smarter, faster, funnier. And I don't want to miss another minute. Watch the piece I did for KRJH 2 Works For You on Nichole, then watch her video for Slow Down. But grab the tissues because you're going to need them. Slow Down is available now online and in bookstores.

More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music

Even though the phrase "the unmaking" does not appear in Scripture, you can vividly see various characters in God's Word go through deconstruction, and we can learn from their journey. This week, I take Nichole Nordeman's song, "The Unmaking" and use it to examine the journey of Naomi found in the Book of Ruth. God really used Naomi's journey to teach me what should stay and what should go in my own rubble pile, perhaps He will do the same for you. I even created a resource to help walk you through that process. On this episode I discuss: Nichole Nordeman's story behind the song - YouTube Nichole Nordeman's story behind the song written thoughts Discovering strength and vulnerability in recognizing we all need to go through the unmaking Unpacking the story of Naomi found in The Book of Ruth Every good and perfect gift comes from God, but not every tragedy can be interpreted as God turning against you Coming to a new and renewed perspective of WHO God is by what He says about Himself Jesus' question about what is really important - Matthew 16:26 The difference between human point of view and God's point of view Using Naomi as an example, sort through "what should go and what should stay" - use this tool to help Not elevating other's thoughts and revelations above Scripture Always returning to God's Word, but growing through both God's Word and the revelation He gives through others Additional Resources Lyrics This Week's Challenge Read the Book of Ruth several times this week. Ponder the lyrics of this song and the idea of allowing God to unmake us before rebuilding us. Focus on Naomi as an example and use the resource I've created to help you process what should stay and what should go in your own life.

More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music

How many times will you walk by a nativity scene this Christmas season? Are you like me? Have you become numb to the REAL story behind the figurines? This week's song, "Real" by Nichole Nordeman, reminds us of the REAL people in this familiar scene. I hope this song will not only inspire you to take a closer look at Scripture, but I hope it will give you a tool that you can use EVERY TIME you read the stories of Biblical characters. On this week's episode I discuss: The tool of remembering that Biblical characters are REAL Al Andrews short story, "Real - A Christmas Story" Luke 2:1-7 What Mary may have experienced and felt Luke 1:28-38 A closer look at Luke 2:7 What we can do to ensure Biblical characters stay "real" to us Read the details that are really there Do a little research Take time to imagine how you would feel in their situation and overlay that with historical details the character may have had to endure Additional Resources Lyrics Story behind how the song came to be Article from ChristianAnswers.net on Myths About Christmas Article from CatholicIreland.net on the details of the journey shown in the Christmas story This Week's Challenge Read the Christmas story details in Luke and Matthew in a variety of versions. Consider another "character" in the Christmas story and follow the three steps outlined in today's episode to ensure this character comes to life in your mind, because after all, they were REAL.
