If you have heard of Munchausen Syndrome before, it's far more likely you've seen it represented in popular culture than in real life. Like a lot of psychological syndromes, it's used as a dramatic device in many films and series, like Sharp Objects or The Politician to name just a couple. The most recent example is The Act, which was created by Nick Antosca and Michelle Dean, and first appeared on Hulu in 2019. The series was inspired by a real-life case in the United States, and tells the story of a mother who convinces her daughter and the world that she suffers from leukemia, muscular dystrophy, and other disorders. Why would anyone do something like that? Where does the Munchausen part come from? Why is this syndrome so prevalent in pop culture? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions ! Editor - Greg O'Bryant MR. AND MRS. SMITH editor, Greg O'Bryant was not just joining the biggest project of his career with this new Amazon series, but he would also be the "new guy" on a well-oiled machine of storytellers from the tv series, ATLANTA. Taking the chance really paid off for Greg. Not only did he get to try his hand at action, but he got to have his name in the credits twice (Greg also co-produced)! Turning the premise of the 2005 feature film inside out, here John and Jane are two strangers-turned-partners who carry out their spy-like duties under the cover of being married software engineers. Taking their orders from an unseen task master they call "HiHi", the two learn the ropes of being "Smiths" while learning to love, and somewhat trust, one another. GREG O'BRYANT Prior to working on MR. AND MRS. SMITH, Greg first began his partnership with writer/director Scott Z. Burns on the latter's political drama, THE REPORT (2019). Greg would also edit an episode of the series, THE LOUDEST VOICE (2019) that Burns helmed. Most recently, the two collaborated on the Apple TV+ series, EXTRAPOLATIONS (2023). In addition to his work with Scott Z. Burns, Greg is also a frequent collaborator with show runner, Nick Antosca. Their partnership first began on CHANNEL ZERO, a SyFy Channel anthology series based on the popular Internet "Creepypastas" Candle Cove, The No-End House and Butcher's Block. Subsequent projects with Antosca would include Hulu's original series, THE ACT, as well as the Netflix series, BRAND NEW CHERRY FLAVOR. Greg also edited the tv series, THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE, adapted from the film by Steven Soderbergh. Editing Mr. and Mrs. Smith In our discussion with MR. AND MRS. Editor - Greg O'Bryant EXTRAPOLATIONS editor, Greg O'Bryant has once again teamed up with writer/director Scott Z. Burns, this time to take on the challenge of creating an entertaining, educational and hopefully motivational series about the future effects of climate change. Delivered as an anthology series, one of the more daunting tasks for the team would be managing the often dramatic shifts in tone, as well as the delicate balance between drama and, on occasion, comedy. Taking place in the not-too-distant future, but over the span of thirty-three years, EXTRAPOLATIONS shows how the effects of climate change have become embedded into people's everyday lives; through eight interwoven stories that explore the intimate, life-changing choices that must be made when the planet is changing faster than the population. GREG O'BRYANT Greg first began his partnership with Scott Z. Burns on the latter's political drama, THE REPORT (2019). In the city of Hackensack, New Jersey, 14-year-old Jake Wheeler buys a Good Guy doll at a yard sale to use it in his contemporary art project. He later discovers that the doll is possessed by the soul of serial killer Charles Lee Ray, who in this form is known as Chucky. Jake soon becomes a suspect in a series of strange events involving the doll, who unleashes a wave of shocking murders around the town. Some of the boy's classmates will also see themselves linked to these events. In addition, a series of flashbacks explore Charles's past as a seemingly normal kid who somehow became one of Hackensack's most notorious killers.Follow the Complete Guide to Horror Movies podcast on our social channels below.↪ Facebook↪ TikTok↪ Twitter↪ Instagram↪ Subscribe to our YouTube channel↪ Tip us $5↪ LinktreeOn January 29, 2019, it was reported the series was in development on Syfy, with Don Mancini serving as the series creator. Mancini was also expected to serve as an executive producer alongside David Kirschner and Nick Antosca. On January 11, 2020, during NBCUniversal's presentation at the TCA Winter Press Tour in Pasadena, California, it was announced that Syfy had given the production a straight-to-series order, with Harley Peyton set to serve as an executive producer alongside Mancini, Kirschner, and Antosca. Universal Content Productions would be involved producing the series. Mancini was announced to write all episodes of the first season, though he ended up employing a team of writers, and directed the first episode. For Chucky's character, he was allowed to use the word "f**k" a maximum of ten times per episode.Mancini, who began working for television on the Hannibal series, wanted to "reinvent" the Chucky franchise by bringing it to this format, and subsequently expand its fandom. He took a somewhat autobiographical approach to Jake's character, a gay teenager whose father is not accepting of the boy's "burgeoning sexual and romantic identity". The director cites this conflict as referential to his own adolescence. The show is a direct sequel to Cult of Chucky (2017), where the cliffhanger ending puts the titular character "on the road to a sexual exploration" after he transfers his soul to a female body. As an innovation for the character, Chucky is also used as a "metaphor" of the real life bully, guising himself to be "charming [and] funny" and manipulating people (what Mancini called "the ultimate bully"). By making him close to Jake, whose struggles are related to those of the LGBT community, the series also acknowledges that "Chucky himself has a queer kid" (Glen/Glenda, from Seed of Chucky).According to Decider's Jon O'Brien, "queer characters have been a Child's Play mainstay ever since Bride of Chucky's ill-fated David (Gordon Michael Woolvett) back in 1998", but this series marks the first time they have such a prominent presence. With eight hours to explore different sides of the story, Mancini saw the opportunity to elucidate the killer's past and answer questions that fans had been asking, like who his first victim was and how he met his bride Tiffany. While working on the show, Mancini was concerned with the potential impact the 2019 Child's Play reboot could have had in the franchise, speculating that, had it been a success, Universal Pictures could have decided to abandon the original film continuity. However, the reboot film was not the success Universal expected and a sequel has not been produced. On November 29, 2021, USA Network and Syfy renewed the series for a second season which is set to premiere in 2022.#horror #movie #death #horrorfilm #splatter #deathscene #blood #gore #scarymovie #horror #completeguidetohorror #horrormovie #scary #creepy #graphic #gay #lgbt #chucky #charlesleeray #andybarclay #donmancini #braddourif #childsplay #gayhorror #cultofchucky #tiffany #tiffanydoll #jennifertilly #devonsawa #scifi #scifichannel #lexi #tvshow #chuckytvseries #chuckytv #glen #glenda #nonbinary #transrights #wheatus #teenagedirtbag

HOO BOY! We’re back with a MODREN FILM, and it’s a doozy. The del Toro-produced, Scott Cooper-directed Native American(?) inspired(???) adaptation(!?!?!) of Nick Antosca’s short story(???!??!?!) that throws in a bunch of alcoholism, child abuse, Indigenous lore, and disjointed plotting that all adds up to a whole bunch of, well, BAD WORDS. It’s “Antlers!”

In which the Mister joins me in reviewing ANTLERS (2021), from director by Scott Cooper and a script from Henry Chaisson and Nick Antosca and based on the short story, THE QUIET BOY: A SHORT HORROR STORY by Nick Antosca. The film follows the story of a young woman who's come back home to a remote Pacific Northwest town and is a middle school teacher. She encounters a young boy, Lucas (in a luminescent performance by Jeremy T. Thomas). The teacher, Julia (Keri Russell) and her brother, the town sheriff (Jesse Plemons) soon get swept up in the darkness that surrounds this young boy and they're in a race to figure out what exactly is at the heart of some unexplained and brutal deaths around the town and how they're tied to Lucas. Great cinematography, solid performances and outstanding FX help but not enough to save a mediocre script on a topic that could have been so much more. The film has a run time of 1 h 39 m and is rated R and is available on HBO Max but also for rent on many other platforms. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. Hey film buds,We're continuing to examine the Movies We Missed in 2021. In this episode though we aren't looking at the major blockbusters, biopics, or awards contenders. We're reviewing and discussing the horror films, thrillers, and folktales. Joining Paul and Lauren is Friend of the Show, Nick Delgadillo, who included one of these four films on his Best of 2021 list.Antlers, our first film, is an interesting adaptation of a short story "The Quiet Boy", written by Nick Antosca. It is a film based in myth, given a modern twist. Similarly our second film, Lamb, is a Neo-folktale inspired by the classical folklore ideas from Iceland. The third film is another adaptation from the love-or-hate director M. Night Shyamalan, Old. The movie includes isolation, body horror, and much more, culminating in one of the more divisive films of the year.Last, starring the iconic character actor Nicolas Cage, is Pig, a movie about identity, loss, and love. The film is a slow boil thriller that is also interested in answering the question: what does food mean to us?Rounding out the discussion, we talk about What We're Watching, Nick's Awards Season Opinion, and more. Antlers is a 2021 supernatural horror film directed by Scott Cooper. It follows a school teacher and her police officer brother in a small Oregon town, where they become convinced one of her students is harboring a supernatural creature. The film stars Keri Russell, Jesse Plemons, Jeremy T. Thomas, Graham Greene, Scott Haze, Rory Cochrane, and Amy Madigan. The screenplay, written by C. Henry Chaisson, Nick Antosca, and Cooper, was adapted from Antosca's short story "The Quiet Boy", originally published in Guernica magazine in January 2019. The project was announced in July 2018 with Cooper attached to direct, and the cast joining the next month. Filming took place in British Columbia in October and November 2018. Antlers premiered at Beyond Fest in October 11, 2021, and was theatrically released in the United States on October 29, 2021, by Searchlight Pictures, after being delayed twice from an April 2020 release date due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the cinematography but lamented the screenplay's underdeveloped themes. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/popcorn-junkies/message

Editor - Greg O'Bryant Brand New Cherry Flavor editor, Greg O'Bryant told his frequent collaborator, and B.N.C.F. show runner, Nick Antosca that he couldn't believe that any studio would back a series based on Todd Grimson's 1996 book of the same name; but if any did, Greg was "all in". As it turns out, Netflix was all in too. The result is an 8-episode series that almost defies description, but here's how Netflix describes it anyway. A filmmaker heads to Hollywood in the early '90s to make her movie but tumbles down a hallucinatory rabbit hole of sex, magic, revenge — and kittens. As accurate a description as that is, it doesn't even scratch the surface of what Greg and his friends created for the streaming giant. GREG O'BRYANT Brand New Cherry Flavor editor, Greg O'Bryant first began his partnership with Nick Antosca on Channel Zero, a SyFy Channel anthology series based on the popular Internet "Creepypastas" Candle Cove, The No-End House and Butcher's Block. This would not be the first anthology series where O'Bryant would lend his editorial talents, as he also worked on the tv adaptation of Steven Soderbergh's The Girlfriend Experience. Prior to Brand New Cherry Flavor, O'Bryant and Antosca would join forces once again on Hulu's original series, The Act. In addition to these projects, Greg also edited the critically acclaimed political drama, The Report. Editing Brand New Cherry Flavor In our discussion with Brand New Cherry Flavor editor, Greg O'Bryant, we talk about: Building a partnership with show runner Nick Antosca Creating the "nightmare logic" for the series Working with the LiveGrain process Keeping a clean timeline for the next editor The importance of being intentional with music The Credits Visit ExtremeMusic for all your production audio needs Check out the free trial of Media Composer | Ultimate Subscribe to The Rough Cut podcast and never miss an episode Visit The Rough Cut on YouTube

In this episode we break down the first episode of The Act, which was created by Nick Antosca and Michelle Dean, and premiered on March 20, 2019. The Act is a Hulu Original, and the season one finale aired on May 1, 2019. The title of the first episode is “La Maison du Bon Rêve,” which translates loosely to “Dream Home.” As always, we take a look at the Hulu description: “The Act is a seasonal anthology series that tells startling, stranger-than-fiction true crime stories. The first season follows Gypsy Blanchard, a girl trying to escape the toxic relationship she has with her overprotective mother. Her quest for independence opens a Pandora’s box of secrets, one that ultimately leads to murder.” Thanks for the spoiler alert, guy writing the Hulu description. We discuss some of the real-life elements of the series--including the HBO documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest--without giving away too much about the fate of Gypsy Rose and Dee Dee Blanchard. In addition to our detailed breakdown of the episode, we conclude the podcast by posing the question: “Which true-crime murderer would you want to be stranded on a desert island with?” For more information and to contact us, check out our social media pages: Facebook @YouMeAndTV, Twitter @YouMeAndTVPod, and Instagram @youmeandtvpodcast.

On Monday, February 6, 2017, Paramount Pictures announced to the world that they were cancelling the long gestating reboot of their beloved franchise, FRIDAY THE 13TH. Now, one month before the movie was going to begin principal photography, Brian and Doug present a full, no-holds barred, reveal and discussion about the 13th film that never came to be. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Aokigahara forest, also known as the Suicide Forest, is a place outside of Tokyo, Japan where yearly dozens of depressed, mentally ill, and lonely people go and take their own life. Melancholy and depression are stronger emotions than folks may think, and mental illness is something many societies aren't proactive about. Yet such a beautiful and majestic place as Aokigahara has such a heartrending reputation. Why? How come? Oddly, the new movie, The Forest, is not the first film to focus on this strange place. The 2007 film Forest of Death by The Pang Brothers (most famous for The Eye) starring Shu Qi was probably one of the most popular. This new film starring two hot television stars, Natalie Dormer and Taylor Kinney, was released earlier this January to mediocre reviews. Natalie plays a pair of twin sisters where one, Jess, a teacher of English in Japan, goes missing and Sara, her sister, heads off to find her. Soon a hidden past begins to catch up to them and Aokigahara may be the key to both redemption and death. First time director Jason Zada takes the helm from a script co-written by Nick Antosca (attached to the upcoming Friday the 13th reboot) and Ben Ketai (writer for the upcoming film, The Last Word, directed by Simon Rumley as well as the upcoming sequel to The Strangers). With its roots in the Japanese horror films of the early 2000's, The Forest brings us a slow burn with a mystery to discover what is truth and hallucination. Dark Discussions talks about the first major Hollywood horror film release of 2016 and gives their opinions. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM
In this episode of The Necronomicast, we venture down Brian’s Dark Alley for an exclusive conversation with writer NICK ANTOSCA. Nick is building up an impressive resume in Hollywood writing for acclaimed television shows such as “Hannibal” on NBC and the recently released feature film “The Forest”. He is also an award winning writer of books such as his most recent offering “The Girlfriend Game”. Nick talks about his background, his move to Los Angeles to pursue writing, and the evolution of the first draft of a script to competed work of art. Of course, there is a little chat about a fellow in a hockey mask. Writer Nick Antosca on The Necronomicast! Nick Antosca blog Nick Antosca IMDB
On this episode we are joined by Nick Antosca, writer on the critically acclaimed television series HANNIBAL, to talk about FRIDAY THE 13th, a film he knows a little something about as he is the writer behind the upcoming reboot of the series. The other movie we will be pairing up with that horror classic is another favorite of the genre in ON GOLDEN POND. Keep listening to the episode to see if Mr. Antosca will be taking over the reboot of that particular property. This odd double feature of Film Families on the Lake has been inspired by Sarah Adina Smith’s new film THE MIDNIGHT SWIM, who was nice enough to talk with us about the inspiration for the script and the filmmaking techniques she used to put audiences in a character's head.
Colin Marshall chats with Nick Antosca, author of the new short story collection "The Girlfriend Game."
It's the height of summer and we're heating up the airways again! Special in-studio guests will provide Dereck and Kay with some entertainment and we will be interviewing television writer and author, Nick Antosca, author of three books which earned him praise as "psychological horror's rising star." Most recently, he published THE GIRLFRIEND GAME. He just moved to L.A. to write for JJ Abrams' new TV series, BELIEVE. Other TV credits include MTV's TEEN WOLF and the ABC military drama series, LAST RESORT. A Yale graduate, he has written for publications including The New York Sun, n+1, The Paris Review, Nerve, Hustler, Film Threat, The Barcelona Review, and The Daily Beast. For more info on what Nick is up to, visit: http://brothercyst.blogspot.com Along with this scintillating interview, Kay brings back The Game of the Month (a new game!), Dereck has the Weird News and Kay's got the Hot Topics...yanno...normal stuff. You don't want to miss it!
Nick Antosca is the guest. A staff writer on the upcoming NBC show Believe, helmed by J.J. Abrams and Alfonso Cuarón, he is also the author of several books, the most recent of which is a story collection called The Girlfriend Game, available now from Word Riot Press. Peter Straub says "These lovely stories float out to us from a long, dark alley-way where Franz Kafka and Bruno Schultz are mugging Ray Bradbury.... Nick Antosca has reached a level of blissful mastery." And Publishers Weekly says "Antosca's scalpel dissects love, family, and illusions of morality in this brutal and often uncomfortably sexual collection. Combining scathing horror and psychological realism, these 12 vivisections of the inhuman condition marry stinging social commentary with psychological horror... Horror's expected icons are replaced by neighbors and families, with relationships being the monsters... This literate, thoughtful horror will inspire long-lasting unease." Monologue topics: addicition, moral ambiguity, the vastness of space, dark mystery. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
