On Day One, Donald Trump froze nearly all U.S. foreign aid. On Day Eight, the State Department issued a stop-work order for USAID. This is causing massive ripple effects around the world. USAID staff and contractors are being laid off in droves. HIV patients in several African countries are being turned away from clinics where they had long received crucial medicines. Humanitarian and development non-profits in the United States and across the globe that depend on contracts from USAID and the U.S. government are now wondering if they'll be able to continue their work. Joining me to discuss the impact of this sudden curtailing of nearly all U.S. foreign assistance is Jeremy Konyndyk. He is a veteran humanitarian affairs official who led USAID's response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa during the Obama administration. Now, he leads Refugees International, an advocacy group. He is in a unique position to speak freely on this topic because the NGO he currently leads does not receive government funding—whereas other NGO leaders fear retribution if they speak out. https://www.globaldispatches.org/
2024 was a mixed year, with some stellar announcements like Tata Group's gigafactory investment offset by the cancellation of Phase 2 of HS2 and a budget black hole to pay for, but an Industrial Strategy may give the industry the long-term stability it needs. This article is by Will Stirling The Chancellor Rachel Reeves received a boost a week before her Autumn Budget when the IMF revised its forecast for UK growth this year to 1.1% (up from 0.7% in July) and 1.5% in 2025 – the biggest upward revision for any advanced country. It's a sign of better things to come, and 2024 was not a banner year in manufacturing, more one defined by steady stability, yet it still notched up a few memorable headlines for British industry. Spiralling costs meant the previous Tory government cancelled Phase 2 of HS2 from Birmingham to Manchester, affecting hundreds of supply chain companies, which the new Labour government partly blamed for the cost overruns. The Secretary of State for Transport Louise Haigh launched an independent review to ensure lessons will be learned and the costs for HS2 are controlled. The cost of Phase 1, London to Birmingham, is expected to reach £66bn. Covid and the semiconductor-shortage-affected UK automotive sector got a fillip in February when Agratas, the battery division of Tata Group, confirmed a new £4bn battery gigafactory in Somerset. It was a relief for the car sector to see the UK stall on the global league table for gigafactory capacity, a key metric for car plant investment. While carmaking recovered strongly in 2023 after semiconductor supply returned, it is slowing down. By August, the UK had manufactured 522,833 cars, down 8.5% on production at the same point in 2023 when ythe figure was 571,671. Interestingly, year-to-date vehicles for the domestic UK market had increased by 12%, but exports, representing over 84% of all car production, were down 13.6%. The production of electric cars, including hybrids (EVs), fell by 26%. Automotive business group SMMT said this decline is expected to be reversed in the longer term as new models come on stream. Massive manufacturer discounting saved car sales in Europe in September, pushing BEV sales to 56,387 registrations. Siemens opened its new train factory in Goole, Humberside, in October and announced a further £40m in addition to the £200 investment in the Goole Rail Village, which will now bring up to 1,000 new jobs to the region, as well as around 1,700 supply chain job opportunities. In addition to maintaining the bogies from Siemens' 572 trains running in the UK, it will also include new production lines for assembling bogies for new trains, which will be the first for Siemens in the UK. Aerospace is battling delivery rate challenges: after Covid, orders poured in, and the industry is pulling on all levers to find ways to go above ‘Rate 60' into the consistent 80s or even 90 aircraft per month to reduce long delivery times. Ninety commercial aircraft were delivered in August, the highest in that month of the year since 2018. But that's not the whole story. While the global backlog of aircraft on order is 15,651 planes according to the industry group ADS - an extraordinary number - aircraft orders in the year-to-date are two-thirds behind 2023 levels. Perhaps it was a sign that Brexit was the past. The FA appointed Thomas Tuchel as the senior men's coach, causing gossip as the first German coach of the England football team. A week later, Britain and Germany signed a government-described “landmark' defence agreement to boost security, investment, and jobs. German defence giant Rheinmetall will build a new factory in the UK to make barrels for artillery guns, and German marine surveillance aircraft will supply patrols from RAF Lossiemouth. The factory will need British steel and will create 400 jobs. It's the first defence pact with Germany of this scale, although both countries already collaborate on making armoured vehicles, for example. In October, BAE Systems Maritime launched the sixth Astute class submarine, Agamemnon. Attention will soon switch to the multi-billion AUKUS submarine (SSN-A) programme, where the boats will be built in the UK and Australia. Fhaheen Khan, senior economist at Make UK says “Manufacturers this year experienced the most stable period of business conditions in almost a decade, despite still facing higher costs, tight interest rates and skills shortages.” While it could be seen as a year of two halves – the first six months boasting strong production, order books and investment intentions, and the second looking far more mixed due to an inevitable domestic market slowdown –manufacturers remain buoyant in their expectations.” h Accountants and business advisors are expecting more investment in the economy in 2025, following several years where major events and inflation have made business conditions that could be generally described as ‘sh*t'. Fhaheen Khan thinks the new 10-year industrial strategy is an important milestone in achieving economic growth, although some seasoned business leaders will say they have heard it all before. It's hard to remember, but the UK has had at least four official industrial strategies since the 2008/9 recession: in 2009 (Mandelson), 2012 (Vince Cable), 2017 (Greg Clark) and now in 2024. Khan says “It's highly encouraging that advanced manufacturing will be a key sector driving that growth, and the Industrial Strategy Council will help lay the pipework needed to modernise UK industry through the wide adoption of AI, computing, and techniques like 3D printing.” Of particular relevance to MTD readers, the numbers show that industries specialising in producing capital equipment like machinery, electronics and metal fabricators have experienced a positive year. This is due to strong exports to the US and the EU as many Western countries are investing in the kit to modernise their manufacturing – for example, the US's Inflation Reduction Act and, one could say, on the wave of ‘Make America Great Again'. Khan says “These subsectors have much to look forward to in 2025 as economic conditions stabilise further, inflation cools, and interest rates are loosened." The manufacturing technology expo MACH 2024 organisers said visitors were up 6% on the previous show and reported a good vibe. Greg Capp, sales director at EDM machinery firm Sodi-Tech, said: “Footfall has been the best in a long time. On Day One, we had enough enquiries for the next six months.” Overall, investment in manufacturing in 2023 (last full year) is up by 4% on 2022, from £40.24bn to £41.8m, and economists expect this to rise in 2024. Despite the numbers and late positivity, on the ground, some manufacturing machinery vendors and subcontractors report a frustrating year where the anticipated rush of orders failed to materialise. That flat confidence from 2022-2023 seemed to be overspilled into the year's first half. Andrea Wilson at deep hole drilling and boring engineering company Hone-All Precision says “2024 has been a challenging and varied year for most businesses. “Uncertainty and political instability have created conditions that have not been beneficial to business and have created barriers to growth. “The creation of the 10-year Industrial Strategy will hopefully give business and investors the confidence they have been lacking the last few years.” The new industrial strategy focuses on eight sectors: advanced manufacturing, clean energy industries, creative industries, defence, digital and technologies, financial services, life sciences, and professional and business services. High-tech, hard-tech, high-potential companies can benefit hugely from close government support. The top two sectors in the strategy are advanced manufacturing and clean energy industries. “Tokamak Energy does both!” says David Kingham, the executive vice chairman and a co-founder. He says that the company that designs, manufactures and operates a plant for nuclear fusion to generate power aims to accelerate the development of fusion energy, the most valuable technology of the 21st Century. “We were delighted to see the new consultation on the Industrial Strategy. A company like Tokamak Energy, with over 250 employees and global ambitions, can grow rapidly if we have consistent strong backing from the government.” The company has had spectacular success in recent years with the record-breaking ST40 high field compact spherical tokamak – which reached 100 million degrees Celsius plasma ion temperature, the threshold needed for commercial fusion energy. Its high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet development has also set records for magnetic field strength at a temperature of 20,000C. David says: “Our industrial strategy is to pursue fusion energy by assembling consortia around our core technologies to provide the complimentary capabilities necessary for the development and deployment of fusion. This will require major investment by governments and consortium partners, but the prize is the elusive goal of commercial fusion energy. The fastest achievable timeline for fusion is 10 years to a 50MW pilot plant, a goal set by the US Department of Energy milestone-driven fusion development program. “So a bold, consistent industrial strategy from the Government could enable the UK to have its fusion “cake” in the long term and “eat” the economic benefits of the magnet spin-off technology in the short to medium term.” In the supply chain, companies like Hone-All Precision want long-term stability, vision, and potential targeted support through programmes unafraid of ‘picking winners' that have previously blighted attempts to assist the industry within state aid rules. Managing Director Andrea Wilson says “The new Labour government must commit to long term strategic thinking and investment decisions, and the newly formed Industrial Council will hopefully achieve this.” “The council's success will be increased dramatically if it's informed by business leaders, owners, and most importantly, if it includes SME representation. The outcome of these two positive moves will hopefully result in us seeing the confidence and stability we all need to thrive.” Machine tool and machinery suppliers need orders, and for that, their customers need confidence to buy. Adrian Haller, managing director of Bruderer UK, a leading manufacturer of precision high-speed presses says “The UK has a fantastic opportunity in advanced engineering, and we have so many brilliant companies – at all levels of the supply chain – that are prospering despite the lack of a coherent Government strategy to support the sector.” “This isn't tubthumping; this is what we see every day when our sales engineers and installers commission precision high-speed Bruderer presses on shop floors across the country. Imagine what we could do if we had a long-term Industrial Strategy that focuses on our strengths and invests in them? And I don't mean the odd grant here and there. It needs to be substantial and flow down to SMEs – that is the critical bit. For industry to become more efficient, an area to improve is the education of manufacturing engineers about new, ‘smart' technology. Mark Weymouth, MD of PLUS Automation and UK representative for Contrinex and Satron, who runs a popular LinkedIn newsletter says “There's a pervading tendency for engineers to buy and commission what they know and not look at new, better plant and equipment that can raise productivity.” While PLUS Automation is in its fourth year of growth, many food and liquid process manufacturers are not explaining this technology to their site engineers. He says “The UK is about seven years behind mainland Europe in adopting many process technologies.” Although the increase in employers' national insurance payments may dampen this optimism, the indicators are that this new strategy for industry will help businesses, especially those in advanced manufacturing areas.

The Pac-12 has owned the airwaves this week.It began by adding 4 new schools last Thursday morning and continued with Washington State's epic win in the Apple Cup on a 4th down stop that will be talked about for decades. While Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould did not call a play last Saturday in college football, she did create the playbook that added San Diego State, Fresno State, Boise State and Colorado State last Thursday. Commissioner Gould has been a friend for decades and when she was hired to lead the Pac-12 months ago, she was not only the perfect hire, but in my eyes, the only person for the job.On Day One, she stated that she would be bold, aggressive, open minded and intentional. Now well into her 7th month, she has delivered on all 4.In a conversation fueled by our founding partner 76, Commissioner Gould joined the Y-Option podcast to share her insight and expertise as the Pac-12 completed Phase One of the rebuild and is into Phase Two. We dove into subjects that are immediate, like what WSU will be like on Friday night, where she will be in attendance, as they host San Jose State as well as what the CFP landscape could look like in late November for the Cougs.Always open and vulnerable, Commissioner Gould also shared that among the 200 plus text messages she has received since the news broke of the Pac-12's new additions, the ones she enjoyed most were from friends who were colleagues for years in the Pac-12 Conference. Leaders have a unique way to connect to others and allow others to feel seen. In my eyes, Teresa does exactly that and for the new schools on their way to the Pac-12, you are in competitive and thoughtful hands. While I cannot state for sure what the next phase will be, let alone who the exact teams will be, I can say with absolute certainty and confidence that Teresa Gould will continue to lead this charge and meet the moment that is today's college sports reality. As always, Jim Thornby and I also dive into all things Week 4 in college football and share stories from USC/Michigan, the oldest QBs in college football facing off in Stillwater and Jim's favorite game this weekend in college football (Spoiler: it involves Lane Kiffin, Clay Helton and Jaxson Dart).I'm off to Bloomington to run the stadium steps with Rhett Lewis. Be sure to track us all weekend on Instagram as we will do our best to convince Guy Haberman to join in and get to know IU's Memorial Stadium on another level. And if you watch Pac-12 Insider, you will start to see Y-Option there now as well. We're fired up to be on that platform and add to the growing community of you all on SubStack, YouTube, Spotify, Apple and more.As always - none of this is possible without YOU. So thank you.Much love,YogiThis episode was executive produced by Jim Thornby and edited by Victor Ren.This podcast is a Best Coast Media production. THE Presentations Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
I had an interesting collision of presenting styles recently. We were conducting one of our High Impact Presentations Courses and I was one of the two instructors for this programme. On Day One, a very important pivot takes place. They do three presentations that day and during the third one, they stop focusing on themselves. In the first two, they are consumed with nerves and trying to remember all of the things they are supposed to be doing. One participant publicly mentioned that she hates having a room full of people staring up at her when she presents. It makes her feel tremendously nervous and she feels great fear as a result. Sure enough, she looked totally nervous and very uncomfortable during that first presentation. We have two instructors, so that one can review the video of the presentation with them, immediately after they finish in the main room. What a change, when I got to review her third presentation with her that first day. Like all class participants, she was looking for all the things which were imperfect. In Dale Carnegie, we don't dwell on what isn't working, because we are too busy looking for what is working and for what can work even better. I said to her, “Look at this person on screen. She looks very confident and not at all nervous”. Sure enough, by the third presentation, she had made that important pivot to stop focusing on her nerves and to try to start engaging with the audience in the room. Everyone assembled in the room was directing their eyes to her, watching her, staring up at her. The very thing which she had noted made her supremely nervous, yet by number three, she had forgotten all about that. She was totally focused on others and not on herself. Now she was concentrating on engaging her audience with her message. After the two days of teaching the main modules, I attended an event the next evening for a major luxury brand. The Japan CEO gave a brief presentation. He was bilingual, handsome, and full of confidence. He gave a very good presentation, but it wasn't the full package. Why? The missing vital ingredient was that he wasn't engaging his audience and using that framework to drive his message home. Like most public speakers you will see, he was lacking that engagement factor. Check it the next time you see someone present. Are they talking “at” their audience or “with” their audience? His voice was clear and at a good volume, he used humour well, the slides were acceptable, his energy was great, but he wasn't getting his message through. He was spraying his message to those assembled that evening. Everyone was getting the message at the same time, in the same way, so it meant that no one was actually getting a personalised message. It was a shotgun approach, and he needed to be a sniper instead. If he had directed his eye contact for six seconds each, with each person gathered there, he could cover ten people a minute. That is a very powerful personal connection – one on one, rather than en masse. In his fifteen minute talk, he could have easily made a direct connection with one hundred and fifty people. There were only about fifty people, so he could have covered every single person in that room multiple times. The next morning, I attended another networking event and here was another bilingual, handsome, confident CEO presenter. He had a good voice, good phrasing, displayed lots of energy. The slides could have been simpler, though. Unlike the presenter the evening before, he was spending a lot of time wandering around when speaking. The movement added no value to the talk and in fact, was distracting. By the way, next time you have a chance, take note of presenters who wander around and ask yourself – is their movement habit adding any value to their message? Back to this speaker. He almost had the full package, but again that same vital ingredient of audience engagement was missing. He was another shotgun speaker. He was spraying his message across the entire room to everyone, at the same time and so to no one in particular. There were about 60 people sitting there and he spoke for forty minutes. That means he could make direct six second eye contact with four hundred people, so again a chance for at least six multiple direct touches with each person in that size of crowd. Engaging the listeners is how we get our message to sink in. Just speaking at them doesn't do it. it is like being bathed in a morning mist and you feel a little damp, but soon that evaporates and you move on. His message mist evaporated and was not retained by his audience. If we asked those assembled what they remember from the talk, I will guess not much and probably not the key points he wanted them to keep. Just making that one switch in eye contact in the training made a total difference to how well the class participants got their message across. These two CEOs also need to get their message across too and yet they are falling short at the finish line. The takeaway here is don't spray your audience. Instead, engage them, one by one, and keep engaging them right through the talk. If the object is to get them to accept your message, then this is the secret of how to achieve that goal.

My guest this week recently posted a before and after transformation picture on Instagram, and wrote this in the caption: “From day one I skipped over feelings of disgust with my body, lack of self-love, negative self-talk, and went straight to being the Queenager in my heart and soul. I loved myself, I was healthy, vibrant, disciplined, committed, and had already shapeshifted inside. The outside had to catch up. It would take time. Years! I accepted the way reality manifests, slowly. Waiting for the chess pieces on my life board to be strategically placed by Universal Laws that exist whether I saw them or not. On Day One, I radically altered my thoughts. I am healthy, strong, and lean no matter what my before picture showed. My reality inside mattered. Mindset. Spiritset. Bodyset. Be patient.” Attention Queen-agers and King-agers, shapeshifters, and team universe, we're in for a treat today. I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Julia Olson. Julia is a 64 year old childhood diabetic, double organ transplant and triple cardiac transplant survivor with an amazing transformation story. If you're a fan of how the human spirit and body can triumph over adversity, of how it's never too late to reinvent ourselves, then you're in for a real treat today. Julia has had to overcome quite a bit in her life. As a child she lost her little sister to cancer, and then at age 11 was diagnosed as a Type 1 Diabetic -which eventually led to her giving herself 4-6 injections daily. When she hit her thirties, she was told her kidneys were failing, and she opted for a still experimental double organ transplant. In her forties she had triple cardiac bypass surgery, and then in her fifties she had a thyroidectomy. Then in her sixties she came up on her 30 year organ transplant anniversary and decided she wanted to honor the gift of life she'd been given, which resulted in a first place in masters bikini bodybuilding show at age 64.You can connect with Julia on Instagram @dolphinine We discussed the following resources on this episode:Wonder Women Coaching Group - www.thewonderwomen.comWonder Women Instagram - thewonderwomenofficialMichelle MacDonald Instagram - @yourhealthyhedonistaTalum Strength Club Website – www.tulumstrengthclub.comJoan MacDonald Instagram - @trainwithJoan

The photographs are intensely coloured, sometimes of a vast landscape and often so abstract that you have to look closely to work out what it is in the picture. On Day One for example, "in silence untainted by traffic or helicopters or the energy of human intention, I opened my heart and listened to the soft whisper of clouds sliding along the underside of the night...." Tony was a tour bus guide when the lockdown happened, and he tells Lynn Freeman his writing and photography were what helped him through being cooped up, when he was used to travelling far and wide with his camera.

All these people are ready to take on the world to.....Lose 100lbs.....Make a Million Dollars....take a trip "Around the World,"......and many, many other types of RESOLUTIONS. The "hard" fact is.......just about 8% of people will achieve their New Year's RESOLUTION. Why you ask? It's a simple answer. The majority of us have competing priorities in our lives. We have kids, we have pets, we help take care of our parents, our grand-parents.....we volunteer at very passionate places....AND.....we WORK! It is soooo difficult to meet an outrageous, difficult RESOULUTION, while you are "Living" your life! The Fact is..... HUGE New Year RESOLUTIONS are a "set-up" for Failure.....right from the start. Let's look at an alternative. Make a TANGIBLE....AND......ATTAINABLE GOAL! Let's use this example..... "I'm going to stop eating candy for 30 days, knowing it will help MY body BURN more fat." This GOAL is TANGIBLE AND ATTAINABLE! This GOAL will make YOUR body healthier....AND....YOU will FEEL better!" That's a WIN...WIN situation! Now that you have your TANGIBLE AND ATTAINABLE GOAL in place...Let me help YOU "ACHEIVE" your GOAL. Your Voice That's it! www.TheWeightLossNation.com So.,...here are THREE Positive Affirmations I want you to SAY next week....into YOUR Bathroom Mirror. On Day One.....after you have finished your morning "routine," you will look into the Mirror and say..... "YOU" Can Be The Best! Next.....point to YOURSELF in the Mirror and say..... "YOU" Can Be The Best! Write down this Affirmation on 2 "Sticky" notes. Place one on your Refrigerator and then place one on the Driver's rear sun shade in your car. Every time you go to the refrigerator....look at the affirmation and SAY it....."Out Loud." Every time you pull down the sun shade in your car ...look at the affirmation and SAY it....."Out Loud." On Day TWO.....Repeat Step #1 On Day Three.....after you have finished your morning "routine," you will look into the Mirror and say..... "I AM Happy." Write down this Affirmation on 2 "Sticky" notes. Place one on your Refrigerator and then place one on the Driver's rear sun shade in your car. Every time you go to the refrigerator....look at the affirmation and SAY it....."Out Loud." Every time you pull down the sun shade in your car ...look at the affirmation and SAY it....."Out Loud." On Day Four.....Repeat Step #Three. On Day Five....after you have finished your morning "routine," you will look into the Mirror and say..... "WILL I make a Difference in Someone's Life Today?" This type of question leads to ACTION! I say this AFFIRMATION EVERYDAY and I Mean It! When you make someone "SMILE," You make an impact in their life! Write down this Affirmation on 2 "Sticky" notes. Place one on your Refrigerator and then place one on the Driver's rear sun shade in your car. Every time you go to the refrigerator....look at the affirmation and SAY it....."Out Loud." Every time you pull down the sun shade in your car ...look at the affirmation and SAY it....."Out Loud." So.....by saying these affirmations next week.....I know you will build up your self-esteem and be on your way to attaining your GOAL! In this episode, Marc recounts the details of traveling back to the U.S. from Mexico without a guide other than Google Maps. They clean out the condo and prepare it for rental. They sell what they don’t want to keep, store what they do, and give the remainder to the Salvation Army. Marc shares the health benefits he and his wife have experienced through walking more and eating healthier and the financial benefits of a more affordable healthcare system including health insurance at a fraction of the cost of the ACA programs. Marc describes the trip back to Austin and why you don’t drive at night in Mexico! Key Takeaways: [1:11] Marc welcomes you to Episode 106 of the Repurpose Your Career podcast. [1:22] CareerPivot.com brings you this podcast. CareerPivot.com is one of the very few websites dedicated to those of us in the second half of lives and our careers. Take a moment to check out the blog and the other resources that are delivered to you, free of charge. [1:40] If you are enjoying this podcast, Marc asks you to share it with like-minded souls. Please subscribe on CareerPivot.com, iTunes, and the Google Podcasts app, Podbean, Overcast app, TuneIn, Spotify app, or Stitcher. Share it on social media, or just tell your neighbors and colleagues. The more people Marc reaches, the more he can help. [2:07] Marc has released the 2018 Repurpose Your Career Podcast Survey. Marc thanks listeners who have already taken the survey. [2:15] In order to improve the show, Marc needs to know something about you — how you listen to the show; if you read the show notes; what kinds of episodes are your favorites. [2:25] Marc asks if you would kindly go to CareerPivot.com/podcast-survey (where you will be redirected to SurveyMonkey) to take the survey. Marc will publish the results in a couple of months. In the last week of November, Marc has 35 survey participants, so far. He thanks you in advance for doing this survey for the podcast. [2:50] Next week, Marc will interview Dr. Lynn Marie Morski, who is a quitting evangelist. She helps people quit strategically, through her book, Quitting by Design, and her podcast, Quit Happens. [3:06] This week, Marc takes you on the next steps in becoming an expat in Mexico. Marc and his wife have returned to Austin for six weeks, where they are cleaning out their condo and preparing for their return trip to become semi-permanent residents of Mexico. [3:24] Marc tells of their plan to clean out the condo, apply for visas at the Mexican Embassy in Laredo, get route advice from Juan Pablo (J.P.), get a new car battery, bring cats to the vet, get inn reservations, and use Google Maps for their first solo trip back. [5:15] Mexican highways include several roads in various directions with the same number. Google Maps was invaluable for directions. [5:37] The Millers left on a Tuesday, to avoid trucks that are usually released on Mondays. Going North is very different from going South, primarily because of security checkpoints. [6:04] The Mexican countryside is “drop-dead gorgeous.” Marc wants to take a lot more pictures on their way back down. As they started toward Matehuala there was fairly minimal truck traffic for a good distance. [6:32] Once the truck traffic picked up, there were stretches with one car for every 10 trucks. Marc found a truck going the speed they wanted and followed it for hundreds of miles, as J.P. had suggested. [7:08] On Day One, the Millers ran into one security checkpoint but they were not stopping anyone. The first day was pretty uneventful. They had brought all the food they needed to eat on the trip, so their only stops were for bathroom breaks. [7:33] At the end of Day One, the Millers stayed at the Las Palmas Midway Inn in Matehuala. It is a 1950s style motor inn. Many expats stay there because it is pet-friendly. It was almost full when Marc made the reservation, a week ahead of the trip. This is when all the snowbirds start coming down. [8:11] This time, the cats were a whole lot more comfortable traveling. They were fine at the inn and in the car. The first day was easy. The Millers stopped at the Matehuala Walmart and bought a few things. The hotel restaurant was actually very, very good. [8:46] On Day Two Marc and his wife started out at 7:30, and boy, did they see trucks! Trucks and more trucks. They went through multiple security checkpoints. One of the major ones actually backed up things for an hour. They were in bumper-to-bumper traffic for an hour as they diverted all trucks off to be searched. [9:16] When the Millers got up to the checkpoint, cars were funneled to the left and were waved through. The car in front of the Millers was a high-powered car driven by a Mexican, and the security officers pulled it over to inspect. [9:37] There was also a fruta stop to check for fruit. Marc knew enough Spanish to be able to answer no when the officer asked if they had any fruit in the car. [9:53] Marc and his wife drove all the way up to Nuevo Laredo, to cross at the Laredo border crossing. First, they had to stop at the Banjercito where they surrendered the Temporary Import Permit (TIP) for their car and received back the $400 deposit they paid for their car. If you miss this, you will be barred from bringing a car back to Mexico. [10:55] Marc pulled into the wrong side of the Banjercito booth, and they directed him to turn around and approach on the correct side. They peeled the sticker off and informed the Millers the deposit would be refunded to the Millers’ credit card in three or four days. [11:14] Next was the Immigration (IMM) Office where they took the Millers’ tourist visa (FMM) card. Next would be the U.S. Customs on the other side of the border. [11:37] The Millers had all the paperwork for the cats, as they were supposed to have. That was good because Customs did check their cats. [11:49] These are highly-crossed borders, and closing them is a huge inconvenience for business and locals who go across the borders to work. The Millers crossed at about 5:00 p.m. after a 45-minute wait. They made it to a La Quinta in Laredo, where they stayed the night. [12:37] The next morning, the Millers drove the nice, easy three-to-four trip home. [12:53] The Millers discovered when they got back to Austin that Marc had lost 15 pounds and his wife had lost 20. In Mexico, other than drives to Guadalajara, they hadn’t put 20 miles on the car. They walked everywhere. If they had something big to bring back, like a sack of kitty litter, they brought a little hand truck to carry it. [12:38] Another reason for the weight loss is that Mexican food has no added sugar and salt. Every kind of food the Millers ate tasted better. Local fruits and vegetables, and local baked goods tasted so good. [14:36] Marc’s blood pressure is back to normal and still improving. Marc is now back at his college graduation weight at age 62 — 170 pounds at just under 6'4". He hasn’t been this healthy in years. [15:05] Marc also noticed how much constant noise there is in Austin from machinery and traffic, contrasted with Ajijic. The pace of life is booming in Austin, and Marc finds he doesn’t like it anymore. Austin has changed dramatically in the 40 years the Millers have lived there. [15:38] It used to be a sleepy little university town with state government. “It ain’t that no more.” [15:44] Marc is healthier than he has been in years. His wife has more stamina than she’s had in years. Marc cannot say what the last four months have done for their health. They are looking forward to going back. [15:58] The Miller’s first concern in Austin was what to do with all their stuff. They rented a 5'x10' room at a small storage facility for about $70 per month. Their goal had been to get rid of everything but — not quite everything. They’re storing a few things they are not sure they want to discard and things they will bring down to Ajijic on their next trip. [16:33] The Millers will leave their bikes for now and bring them down on their next trip. They also have a really nice king-sized bed they will store, just in case they come back to stay. Items they wanted no more, they put up on their local condo Facebook group and on Marc’s regular Facebook page, saying no reasonable offer will be turned down. [17:16] The Millers started selling things for $30 to $50. Whatever is leftover that the Millers do not want, the Salvation Army Austin will have come and picked up by the time this episode is released. [17:35] Marc lists the repairs that were needed before renting the condo — new dishwasher, new seals in the toilet, new knobs for the range, some painting, and general maintenance. [18:31] The Millers went through all their paper photos. They got rid of a lot of them and took the rest to a camera shop to be scanned. They will still keep the scanned photos in paper form as well. [18:48] One of their biggest problems was moving George, their 45-year-old ponytail palm. George is nearly 10 feet tall and 500 pounds and was on the third floor. The condo manager found three guys to move the tree and it was an ordeal. They had to take it out of the pot, which was heavy in itself. They gave the tree to a former neighbor. [19:55] They changed their correspondence address to that of an old family friend they’ve known for over 40 years. They are applying for health insurance. Marc has been approved and Lotus Miller is waiting for approval. Marc tells the premium and deductible for his own policy for a year, which will be much less than his monthly ACA premium. [20:55] Lotus’s policy will be a little more than Marc’s and is going through the approval process, now. [21:05] The Millers have just prepared their 2015 Subaru Outback with new tires and a full-size spare. They had to install a lockable Yakima roof rack for the spare, for about $500. [22:15] Marc tells of going through a fog thicker than any he had driven through in his life. The temperature dropped 30°F immediately, and the low-pressure gauge for the tires popped on. Now Marc is getting an electric tire pump to keep in the vehicle. [23:21] Within 10 days of crossing the border, the cats must go to the vet with all the paperwork needed. [23:36] Marc will get a temporary resident visa for himself. Lotus will get a permanent resident visa for herself. You can’t bring a car in on a permanent visa! The car is in Marc’s name. Their marriage certificate shows a different name for Lotus. [24:18] Lotus changed her first name about 10 years ago. The name on their wedding license needs to be certified by the Mexican government. After The Millers get their marriage license certified by the Mexican government, Marc will get a permanent visa and they will get rid of the car. The Mexican government does not like American cars. [25:01] By the time this episode is released on Monday, the Millers will have stopped at the Mexican Embassy in Laredo to process the visa applications. They will cross the border, go to the IMM office very early and leave for Ajijic on Tuesday morning, making it a two-day trip. [25:36] The key piece is — you do not drive at night in Mexico! You do not! There is livestock on the road, even the toll roads. There are also speed bumps that come up fast that you don’t see at night. Marc will leave Laredo with a full tank of gas. Gas is well over $4.00 in Mexico. The only stops will be for bathroom breaks. [27:01] The Millers are excited to go back. Marc is happy to leave Austin. The stress of getting everything ready and turning it over to the property manager has been really difficult. [27:33] Marc and his wife will be coming back to Austin in early March, as Marc has a speaking gig then in Central Texas. The car is also due for registration in April and a car inspection. Marc shares some travel plans for that time. [28:12] Marc hopes you get a feel for this being an amazing experience and a healthy experience. Having spent five months in Mexico, their 2018 spending expenses are way, way down, probably 60% to two-thirds of 2017’s expenses. They have not lived a frugal lifestyle in Ajijic, Mexico. [29:04] Marc hopes you learned something from this episode! If you have any questions, please go to the Show Notes at CareerPivot.com/Episode-106 and put some comments. Marc will be happy to answer your questions. A lot of people have been following the Millers on this journey, including some visits to see them in Ajijic! [29:36] Susan Lahey and Marc are working on the next edition of Repurpose Your Career, and they are looking for your help. Marc is forming a release team of readers who will get access to pre-release chapters of the book to provide feedback. You can be part of this team by going to CareerPivot.com/RYCTeam where you can sign up. [29:58] When you sign up, you’ll receive the pre-release version of chapters when they become available. What Marc asks in return is for you to provide feedback and be prepared to write a review on Amazon when the book is released. [30:17] Marc and Susan are adding around eight new chapters to the book and re-writing several others. Marc’s goal is to have a chapter on the podcast and to the team every four to six weeks in the coming months. Marc may start a private Facebook group for the team to discuss their thoughts. A PDF of Chapter 1 will be released soon. [31:03] Please go to CareerPivot.com/podcast-survey and take the 2018 Repurpose Your Career podcast survey on SurveyMonkey.com. Marc thanks the listeners who have already participated and taken the survey. [31:21] The CareerPivot.com/Community website has become a valuable resource for around 50 members who are participating in the Beta phase of this project. Marc will start recruiting in mid-December for the next cohort to begin in early January. [31:38] If you are interested in the endeavor and would like to be put on the waiting list, please go to CareerPivot.com/Community. When you sign up you’ll receive information about the community as it evolves. Those in the initial cohorts will get to set the direction for this endeavor. This is a paid membership community with special content. [41:51] Marc will do a session, probably in early January, where he will be interviewing some of the members of the community about what they’re getting out of it. This is an evolving community ranging in age from the mid-fifties to the mid-sixties. [32:14] Check back next week, when Marc interviews Dr. Lynn Marie Morski, author of Quitting by Design. [32:48] If you would like to connect with Marc on LinkedIn, please go to LinkedIn.com/in/mrmiller and just say you were listening to this podcast and you would like to connect.
