Elvin Kibet was born and raised in a small village in Kenya, not far from Iten, a town internationally recognized as a hotbed of elite running. Kibet's focus growing up, however, was school; she was determined to excel. And she did. But that wasn't enough to earn her the scholarship she wanted. There was, however, another way. Kibet's two older sisters, Sylvia and Hilda, were both internationally competitive professional runners by the time she finished high school. Their advice: if you want to earn a scholarship and choose your own major (in Kenya, your area of study is chosen for you), you need to run. This set Elvin Kibet on a journey to earn a running scholarship to a US university, which she did. And it was through this process, that she also discovered not only a talent for running fast and racing, but also a love of the sport. Post college, Kibet continued to pursue her racing dreams, ultimately earning a position in the World Class Athlete Program, or WCAP. WCAP is part of the US Army, so in addition to being part of a professional running team, Kibet also became a soldier. Here, as a member of WCAP, Kibet also became the first athlete in the program to ever get pregnant. She faced in unknown future because the Army had no pregnancy policy for members of WCAP. But now because of Elvin Kibet, they do. Kibet's story is highlighted in the new book All in Stride: A Journey in Running, Courage, and the Search for the American Dream, by Johanna Garton, which also features the story of her husband, US Olympian Shadrack Kipchirchir, as well as US Olympian Samantha Schultz. Undoubtedly after hearing Kibet's story here, you will be inspired to read the book. This episode covers Elvin Kibet's running journey, from Kenya to the US; through college, to her first years as a professional runner to WCAP, and through to today, as she navigates the joys and empowerment she's discovered in motherhood. Kibet tells her story in terrific detail, with particularly fascinating insights into the process of emigrating to a new country and the challenges of becoming a professional runner, both in Kenya and the US. Nevada natives Billy Sullivan and Justus Scott have a shared journey on their path to the Army's World Class Athlete Program.
We loved speaking with author and sportswriter, Johanna Garton, whose most recent book, All in Stride: A Journey in Running, Courage and the Search for the American Dream,” was published on Tuesday, April 2. We met Johanna at the Boston Marathon and were thrilled to invite her to talk about her new book on our show. The book is about professional runner, Elvin Kibet, and her husband, Shadrack Kipchirchir and their journeys from a village in Kenya to collegiate athletes to world class American athletes, their love story, and their experiences as distance runners for the World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) for the U.S. Army. Fun fact—Shadrack paced Kipchoge to his sub 2 marathon in 2019. Through a series of interviews with Kibet, Kipchirchir, and their coaches, Garton weaves the story of the many obstacles, including racism, sexism, and disordered eating, that both athletes overcame to reach success their running careers, their challenging but happy childhoods in Kenya. Both decided, in spite of their challenges, that they wanted to serve in the U.S. Army because they were so grateful for the opportunities they were able to seize in the U.S. through running and wanted to serve their country. In her book, Garton also shares the story of WCAP athlete and 2020 U.S. Olympian Samantha Schultz. Schultz struggled with eating disorder recovery, which ultimately led to her retirement from competing in modern pentathlon. . Witnessing Schultz's eating disorder struggles was a culture shock for Kibet, having never seen or heard of anyone experiencing this growing up in Kenya, and it influenced her decision to study public health and research how to better address such issues. Kibet and Kipchirchir are now parents to two-year old Mylo and recently competed in the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/runfartherandfaster/message
Tim Hands visits with Ellis Coleman ahead of his chance to try to qualify one of three Greco-Roman weights for Paris this coming week in Istanbul.
Episode 58 of the Five Point Move Podcast welcomes back Ellis Coleman, who after a two-year hiatus from competition returned to action this past winter and just two weeks ago won the Olympic Trials. Coleman, 32, now has his sights set on placing in the top-3 at the World Olympic Games Qualifier in Istanbul, Turkey. Coleman had appeared on three previous episodes of the program but it has been a while. One thing that has not changed is his forthrightness. As always, the multiple-time World Team member takes a candid approach to a variety of topics, including the implications of the aforementioned World Olympic Qualifier, the impact of his coaches from Illinois, acclimating overseas, and what his plans will look like if his spot at the Paris Olympics is secured.
All In Stride is the story of two Kenyan born athletes who have competed at the highest levels in running, and one US athlete and Olympian in the modern pentathlon. The bond that the three characters share is that they have all been in the Army's world class athlete program (WCAP).The book is divided into two parts:Part 1: Kenya – which is about Elvin and Shadrak's upbringing in Kenya and their journey into running.Part 2: United States of America – which is Elvin and Shadrak's life when they arrived in the US, how they met, and how they ended up in the Army and the WCAP. Sammy was introduced in this section and we learn about her upbringing, how she got into modern pentathlon, and her decision to join the Army and the WCAP.Author Johanna Garton began running on the dirt roads surrounding her family's farmhouse in Wisconsin at age seven. She continued through college, where she competed for Syracuse University as a walk-on. She has since run more than 20 marathons including 5 Boston's. Prior to this book, Johanna also authored two other books:Awakening East, the story of the adoption of her two children from China and her family's decision to move to China to live for one year to immerse the family in the cultureEdge of the Map, which shares the story of American high altitude mountaineer Christine Boskoff, and is currently being developed into a feature film.Johanna was not always an author. Her career started as an immigration lawyer, she worked in nonprofit management and taught college. She now also coached high school cross country. Our second guest in this episode, and one of the subjects of this book, was Elvin Kibet. Elvin was born a twin in rural Kenya. Her family was poor and her parents had 9 children so Elvin and her twin sister Ivy were caring for their younger siblings by the age of 9, including worrying about how they would have enough food to eat. Elvin loved school and was good at it. She also had a grandmother (Gogo) who pushed her to leave the village if she could and always believed Elvin had potential to do great things. Through a series of opportunities, Elvin started running and received a full scholarship to study at the University of Arizona, moved to the US where she met and married her husband, completed a degree in public heath, served in the army and became a US citizen. Elvin was also the first woman, and for while the only women, on the WCAP running team.If you would like to get a copy of this book for yourself, you can find it on Amazon here (in case you don't have a local book store that can order it for you): https://a.co/d/eHf3XaWSupport the showAny feedback or suggestions on this review or any of our other podcast episodes would be greatly welcomed. Terrence Jennings is a former London 2012 Olympics Bronze medalist. He is a coach in the World Class Athlete Program, an initiative of the US army that helps athletes to focus on training and represent the United States at international competition. He started to compete very young and make it to the Youth United States National Team.He is very passionate for the sport, he shares with us some important moments of his career and how he still enjoys training, coaching and watching videos to learn. He has learned from amazing taekwondo masters and coaches like Patrice Remarck and Juan Moreno, in the interview he talked about them and how they helped him to grow in taekwondo.Every taekwondo journey starts with the first classTerrence Jennings was a very active kid. So, when he saw an ad of a new local martial arts school showing a ninja turtle he was immediately attracted to the sport. And since the first class he loved all the flashy movements of taekwondo. He loved playing different sports, like football, basketball and soccer. But he mentions that in team sports there are always things that you can't control because you depend on others.Just one chance to break the boardTerrence's first instructor was very strict. When you were at a belt testing and you had to break a board you only had one chance. Terrence remembers a class partner who in his belt test failed to break the board. Everybody thought that he would have another chance, but no, the instructor made him to wait three months more to do the test again and reattempt to break the board.Terrence reflects that sometimes you don't have a second chance. And you have to do your best when you have the chance.First competitionsTerrence remembers that at first his school was more focused on point sparring. In one of his first competitions he was disqualified for excess of contact, although he was a child he felt disappointed. He thought that maybe that was not the right activity for him. After a while the school started to focus more on Olympic taekwondo and that's how Terrence was introduced in what later would be his way of life.Terrence's first competition was when he was a green belt. His parents drove him one hour to the place of the tournament in Maryland. As in many children tournaments he remembers that the only thing he did was kicking. He went to the middle of the ring and when the fight started it was just one minute of continuous kicking by both sides. No checking or feints, not moving, just kicking until the coach told him to stop.Making a teamEarly in his career he met Coach Patrice Remarck, a two time World Medalist from Ivory Coast who was studying at the University in Washington DC and started to coach in Terrence's academy Olympic style taekwondo.None of the students really know what exactly was Olympic taekwondo, they just followed the instructions of Mr Remarck. One of the strategies that coach Remarck did was to bring the team atmosphere into the dojang. With warm ups, uniforms and behaviour that gives the children that sense of being part of something bigger.Coach Remarck was very strict about earning the right to use a National Team uniform. You could not just put the USA letters in your uniform because you were not allowed to train with that dobok unless you were already a national team member. That is a great motivation, to earn the right to use your country's name in your uniform.Under coach Remarck guidance Terrence's career started to go upwards, he made it to the Junior National Team and started to compete internationally. Before ranking tournaments coach Remarck encouraged his athletes to go to international events like the French or Belgium opens in order to gain experience from fighting the best athletes in other countries.A hard decision and the London 2012 Olympic GamesAn interesting point of the interview was the decision of changing his training place pursuing his dreams.Having an elite coach was a blessing for Terrence's. It allowed him to compete internationally and to be one of the top athletes of the USA. But in order to pursue his dream of going to the London Olympics and to win a medal he had to make some difficult decisions. In a combat sport at an elite level you also need to train with partners that challenge you all the time. That was why he moved to Miami to train at Peak Performance with Coach Juan Moreno who had one of the best teams in the country.Coach Moreno even found him a job to help him to afford his stay in Miami. So he worked at a warehouse starting at 6am and then he just moved to train, every day.But hard work pays off. Under Master Moreno's guidance Terrence won a bronze medal at the London 2012 Olympics. The complete story on the interview. On the interview Terrence talked with us also about:How was his preparation for the London 2012 Olympics? What to do when referees are unfairly penalizing you?How to fight against weight cutting? How does the US Army World Class Athlete Program work?

Spenser Mango is a Greco Olympian and coach originally from St. Louis, MO. In this video he talks about how he didn't start wrestling until high school, how he got into Greco, Greco in general, and his Missouri wrestling memories.
Yes, it’s late, it’s cold and I watched Elf tonight. That’s about all you’re going to get for a cheeky intro. This is Short Time Shots, your mostly daily look at the day’s scores and more in and around the world of wrestling. I’m Jason Bryant. Minnesota Beer of the Night: Last night, the Facebook Live crowd didn’t get to hear my lackluster review of a beer I didn’t really like that much, which was Tin Whiskers Orange Dream State, which was an orange cream ale. Have no fear, here’s a better review, at least, an improvement as it’s Bad Weather Brewing’s Immortal Toast, a coffee infused white stout. Yes, that is such a thing. It’s surprisingly awesome. New Patron: As a result of this thing going live on Facebook last night, we picked up another Patron, this one from Lauren Ruppert, the sister of one of my high school teammates and drill partners. What’s interesting is one of my other drill partners, Curtis Booth, lived up here for six months on a work contract. As soon as it snowed in November, he was out! He was about 2 miles from me - he came by the house last week before he left. Good stuff, Bull Island. This is one time you get mentioned in the media and it’s not an Allen Iverson documentary. She gets a glass, a shirt, some other free stuff, and of course, this shout out. “We’s gonna need some mohr wrassler’s on this heah football teem.” Dual Meets: No ranked D1 teams in action, but here’s what we’ve got from around the mid-majors. Gardner-Webb upended Franklin & Marshall 22-18 in a matinee dual in Boiling Springs, North Carolina. Even giving up a forfeit, the Runnin’ Bulldogs won six of the 10 bouts. Franklin & Marshall picked up a win over the first-year program at Presbyterian. The Diplomats beat the Blue Hose - yes, both of those are the schools’ actual nicknames - 38-9. In other first-year news, Appalachian State spoiled the Division I home debut of Little Rock 36-6 at the Jack Stephens Center. It’s effectively the Sun Belt championship as that all-sports league doesn’t sponsor wrestling. It wasn’t the first major college competition in the state of Arkansas, as Arkansas State had a team back in the 1950s, but it was the first Division I action as there were no divisions back then. Biggest matches of the dual saw Appalachian State’s Sean Carter beat Jaylen Carson at 125 and Codi Russell top Paul Bianchi at 133. App State’s Matt Zovistoski edged Jose Champagne 4-3 at 157. Upset of the night came in Edwardsville, Illinois as Justin Ruffin of SIUE knocked off returning All-American and fourth-ranked Larry Early of Old Dominion 3-1 in the tiebreakers at 157 pounds. ODU won the dual 33-9, but that win at 157 for Ruffin was the head-turner. Also in the MAC, Northern Illinois broke a 13-13 tie by winning the last three weights to top Kent State 23-13. In the NAIA, third-ranked Lindsey Wilson trounced fourth-ranked Marian 44-4 in a dual at Jeffersonville High School in Southern Indiana. Nothing yet from San Francisco State and Simpson, but San Francisco State did beat Southern Oregon 24-19 on Tuesday night. In junior college action, top-ranked Western Wyoming beat No. 11 Northwest College (Wyo.) 35-13. Keep an eye on this name, though for Northwest College - Majid Muratov. He’s a native of Uzbekistan who was 5th at the 2016 Junior World Championships at 84kg. Muratov is wrestling at 197 and picked up a 2-1 win in sudden victory three over top-ranked Tucker Tomlinson. Oh, how did the U.S. entry do that year in Macon? Zahid Valencia was 7th. Notables on the Docket for Thursday: Bloomsburg’s at Lock Haven in the MAC East (or the PSAC, whichever you prefer), Rider is right down the street at Princeton - loser buys at Hoagie Haven - while No. 20 Purdue will face SIUE. Drexel heads west to take on Cal Poly and No. 25 Stanford, while Kent State heads to Wisconsin to face the No. 8 Badgers - Mushroom, Mushroom. Yeah, old reference there too. In Division II, Lander heads to Belmont Abbey, while UW-Parkside heads over to Mankato to take on Minnesota State. Davis & Elkins will go into Pennsylvania to face Seton Hill. That’s the Griffins and not the one’s from Quahog. In Division III, I mistakenly read Thursday’s matches on the previous night’s Short Time Shots, so mistakes happen. By the way, it’s Mt. St. Joseph hosting a tri with Alma and Penn College. In the NAIA, Menlo heads to Southern Oregon. FROM THE DWN: After releasing the men’s freestyle seeds on Tuesday, USA Wrestling and TheMat.com has released the preseeds for this weekend’s U.S. Senior Nationals in Fort Worth in women’s freestyle. Top seeds are Victoria Anthony at 50kg, Dom Parrish at 53kg, two-time Olympic Trials champion Kelsey Campbell at 57kg, Maya Nelson at 62kg, two-time World teamer Forrest Molinari at 68kg, and Final X runner-up Precious Bell at 76kg. TransitionWrestling.com gives us the full entry list for Women’s freestyle at this weekend’s U.S. Senior Nationals. Timmy Hands at FivePointMove.com does another solid feature, this time on the return of RaVaughn Perkins to the Greco-Roman scene. It’s also time for Hands’ Q&A with WCAP’s Spenser Mango on Fort Greco. Purdue wrestling returns with the Always Aggressive podcast. No, that’s not on the network, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t listen to it. Nebraska’s HuskerMat, which produces the Big Mat Show, mostly on Rokfin now, does a free podcast episode with Mike Schadwinkel about his new book Purple Reign. And no, not like Prince. Brad Wilson of LehighValleyLive previews the Phillipsburg wrestling squad, one of the top programs in New Jersey. It’s also good to see Brad attending events again. He’d spent some time in the hospital and is back out in the gyms covering wrestling. Matt Levins of the Burlington Hawk Eye, that’s in Iowa, profiles the situation at Iowa Wesleyan University and how the school was on the brink of extinction, and now finds itself starting men’s and women’s wrestling programs and getting some help from Dan Gable. By the way, Wilson and Levins are both recipients of the NWMA Journalist of the Year Award in the past. India.com profiles 2019 men’s freestyle world silver medalist Deepak Punia. Did you know he was the son of a milkman? No, you didn’t. That’s not in the story, but just in case you were wondering. And yes, the Daily Wrestling Newsletter is GLOBAL. And down US 52 in Rochester, KIMT3 News talks with the Yellow Jackets of Rochester Community and Technical College - the one in Minnesota. Rochester’s news outlets do a pretty fair job of covering RCTC and its sports programs. On The Network Kyle Klingman and Andy Hamilton debate the nuances of ordering a cheesesteak in Philadelphia and visit with Northern Colorado head coach Troy Nickerson on the latest edition of On The Mat. Virginia Tech assistant Jared Frayer recaps the CKLV and previews the upcoming U.S. Senior Nationals with a pair of Southeast Regional Training Center members Mekhi Lewis and Ty Walz set to compete. That’s on Inside Virginia Tech Wrestling. You can get to read those stories and more from Mat Talk Online’s daily wrestling newsletter. Longtime radio broadcaster Ray Adell of Ray Adell Media, WGSM, WBAB and more. Photo by Tom Hoffman. Ray Adell is a radio man, from his early days broadcasting down in Virginia to his arrival at WGSM (World's Greatest Suburban Market!) in Huntington in the early 1950s. But perhaps you'll remember him best as the voice (and mind) behind “About Long Island,” the long-running radio spot sponsored by the Grumman Corporation. For over twenty years Ray and his staff at Adell Media served up snippets of Long Island history in morning drive time to educate and entertain. In this interview Ray looks back at the people he's met (Jack Ellsworth and Edmund Hillary to name just two), stations he's worked at (WCAP, WEST, WKBS, WGSM and WBAB to name just five), and answers the question: is radio dead? Leave a comment if you have memories of Ray or any of the old Long Island stations. And special thanks to Thom Hoffman for arranging this interview. BONUS: The Long Island History Project is now listed in iTunes! If you like what you hear, please leave a review or rate us. If you're not sure how, read this first.
