Our guest in this episode is Catherine Stephenson who lives in Ajijic, Mexico. The owner and name behind Catherine Stephenson Couture, she's been in the sewing world doing what she loves for more than 35 years. Originally from Portland OR, she travelled to Madison WI to earn her BA in textiles and clothing from the University of Wisconsin. Returning to Portland after that, she opened her business and worked to create the Custom Clothing Guild that eventually became the Professional Association of Custom Clothiers (PACC). All of this led to…well, let's let her tell you her story! (3:06) Catherine tells us how she began to sew and who inspired her as a youth, then in Madison, WI as a high school sophomore. Then, when she went to the University, there was a sewing program that enticed her to attend there. AND – a textile chemistry lab. Then, she talks about the ready to wear industry and why it wasn't for her. (9:26) What initially took her to Madison from Portland. Well, there was a connection there from the beginning. (10:26) She was taught in a system that funneled people into the ready to wear industry. Why? Catherine explains! (12:36) Catherine talks about fast fashion and where it's going…what our culture supports. (14:42) Catherine talks about what it took to found the Custom Clothing Guild of Oregon in January of 1992…to her…is was easy peazy! (20:02) Catherine explains the quality standards and how they are implemented industry wide by the Association of Sewing and Design Professionals (ASDP) (31:01) She talks about Linda Stewart and how together they developed the Master Sewing & Design Certification Program. (24:10) Catherine talks about her own career and the long-term relationships she has with her clients. It's the specialness of each unique piece. It's all a symbiotic process and price range/timing is a part of it! And, why she'll only do special events now. (30:40) Why did she close her business? Well, global warming had a little to do with it…as well as a special culture in the Ex-Pat community of Ajijic. They are a part of building Mexico's first co-housing community. What is this? She explains! (34:00) Both Catherine and her husband are artists. She talks in depth about their work and his world renown Spotify channel! (37:31) Ajijic Chic is her line of “Easy Fit Clothing for Lakeside Living”. Catherine talks about how she envisioned this, made it happen and how she brings her creations to her customers. (43:17) Fast Fashion? Oh yes, she does have an opinion about it. She takes us through her thinking. And what this has done to the value of sewing. (48:10) What didn't I ask? Catherine talks about her association's relationship with the Department of Labor to develop and run a 2-year apprenticeship program to teach people to sew and eventually get into the job market. There is also a non-profit that people go through to contribute to this program. You can reach Catherine on her website which is www.cscouture.com, or email her directly at Catherine@cscouture.com Her husband Allen's library on Mixcloud can be found at https://auralfixations.allanstephenson.com If you know someone who has an outstanding story that should be shared on this podcast, drop Meg a note to Meg@sewandsopodcast.com or complete the form on our website.

That would be Pendelton. A whiskey hailing from Canada, but then proofed down and bottled in OregonStrange conceptBody:Created in 2003Their history is tied to the Pendleton round-up, which is one of the oldest and most prestigious rodeos in the west. But their whiskey is Canadian and just cut with “glacierfied” spring water from the west. They source their whiskey from Alberta, where it is made and agedSlightly confused on why they would look to source from CanadaThe 1910 date on the bottles are not for when the company was founded, but rather, when the rodeo was started. Kelsie Hancock is a photographer, travel blogger and resident of San Diego, CA and was commissioned as an officer in the United States Marine Corps in 2015. She was sent to a few different states, but ultimately found herself on Camp Pendleton in San Diego, CA. Kelsie was a communications officer and served on active duty for 4 years. While stationed on Pendelton, she reconnected with a guy she knew from college (Norwich University in Vermont) Nicholas Losapio, also a Captain in the Marine Corps, and an MV-22 Osprey pilot. Nick was the love of Kelsie's life. They dated for several months and then moved into their first apartment together in September 2020, and got engaged on January 16, 2021, in Mammoth Lakes, CA. Their wedding date was set for August 4, 2022 in San Diego. On June 8, 2022, Nick was flying a routine training flight near El Centro, CA with his co-pilot and 3 other crew members. It was a typical day at the office for him. A Weapons and Tactics Instructor (WTI), which can easily be described as the equivalent of Top Gun, and one of the most experienced and well-versed Osprey pilots on the West Coast, if not the entire Marine Corps, Nick's plane went down due to reasons still under investigation. He and the 4 other Marines on the plane perished in the mishap. Kelsie's whole world was turned upside down as she lost her best friend and love of her life. Today Kelsie and I talk all about her story of meeting and falling in love with Nick, what happened on June 8 when Nick passed away, and what life has been like for her since. We also talk about the personal mission she feels called to be on to help other people who are in similar circumstances as she was when Nick passed, as a loved one but not yet a spouse of someone who passed away in active duty. Kelsie is working hard to keep her home and keep her life together, and her story really touched my heart. The gofundme that her friends created has been "the biggest blessing of all" since Nick's passing, and if you'd like to donate you can do that through the link in today's show notes. Time Stamps: [02:18] - Kelsie Hancock talks about growing up in Southern Maryland. [04:18] - How did Kelsie end up in San Diego? [06:54] - Kelsie recalls the camping trip where she bonded with Nick. Samantha HoangLong reports: Almost one year after the murder of George Floyd, art commemorating his life - and the movement that followed - was put on display at Phelps Park in Minneapolis. The art was created on plywood that was being used to board up storefronts in the days following his death. Lessa Kelly is one of the people leading the effort to collect and preserve the plywood protest art. She's the founder and executive director of Memorialize the Movement.“What happened in Minneapolis last year was a historic event, and like all historic events, we want to record that. We want to keep those artifacts and preserve them so that we can look back on it and learn from it and that's what I want to see here today. I want us to go back to the summer of 2020 when the boards were on storefronts and reflect on that and think about how we can be better as a community, how we can be better as a city and as a country so we don't see this continuing to happen.”Kelly began collecting and preserving the boards from businesses and artists last summer. She now has more than 800 pieces.“I think these boards really spoke to me because they put words and images to emotions that I couldn't explain at the time,” Kelly said.Tony Pendelton used to live in the neighborhood, and passed by 38th and Chicago frequently. He came to the art display with his wife. He says the art is inspiring, and that it's been cathartic to see how people are remembering George Floyd.“History is always something that is incredible. It's ongoing, it occurs. We'll never forget George Floyd. We'll never forget what happened to him and the inhumanity that was shown him. And I think this is what affects me, that says okay, he's not a footnote in history. Change has happened because of him,” Pendelton said.Events commemorating George Floyd's death continue through Tuesday.

Many of us live in a world of caregiving for our loved ones during illness or disability. Often this includes choosing or overseeing care planned and delivered by experts—doctors, nurses, therapists, and their assistants. Over the years it has become clear to Kathy Pendleton that we must be active participants, even negotiators and supervisors, regarding the care devised by the experts. And our role is still an act of love—sometimes fierce, often gentle and nurturing. We provide care and protection to our family members, because we love them. Kathy is a best-selling author, award-winning international speaker and compassionate patient advocate. She is especially dedicated to teaching adults with health concerns to confidently participate in their medical decision-making and form effective partnerships with their medical teams. Her twenty plus years of experience in caring for family members, asking endless questions, and learning how the medical system works from a patient perspective have strengthened her resolve we, as family members, can make a huge, positive difference in the care and recovery of ourselves and our loved ones. When an American computer engineer seems to have gone rogue and started working with the Soviets in Southeast Asia, a select team of Joes have to go in to take care of him. It's a kinda/sorta crossover with "In Country" in G.I. Joe Special Missions #8. Plus, I ... well, I not so much reminisce as complain about the 1987 Mets and Terry F---ing Pendelton. My podcast thingy broke and the first, violence-laden, conversation about Calvinism disappeared from existence. First, though, what is up with the Big Mac? Good grief, McDonalds... Dave Pendleton graciously agreed to repeat the conversation and so we armed ourselves for battle and plunged into the debate. So, Calvinism...what is it? Is it right? Am I really using the word as an insult? Dave thinks I'm unfairly portraying the views so I give him a chance to set me straight. We try to remember the TULIP for Calvinism and end up needing to Google it. Sad. David is not a 'hard' Calvinist. I'm not a 'hard' Armenian. Neither of us have had enough coffee to even have this discussion but we do it anyway. There are a lot of really great thinkers who can make a case for Calvinism and none of them are on this podcast. Do we take some credit for salvation? David says, "yes". I says, "no". We break beer bottles and slash at each other with the jagged pieces. Do we have free will? David says 'sort of'. I say 'yep'. We hack each other with machetes. I give my excellent illustration for how Jesus is like Chik-fil-a. I say it's a great illustration but Dave still doesn't immediately renounce Calvinism. So...that's a little disappointing. My friend is annoyed that people want to take "credit" for salvation. I shoot him with a spear gun. We wonder why God bothered giving us brains if we aren't supposed to use them. Ultimately, there is no disagreement between us. So we go at each other with ball bats because we're still pretty worked up from before. Maybe we can't take credit for anything. What is 'motivation' if there's no free will? Sort of a license to take Sunday off and quit trying to teach Christians stuff. This is good news for people who like naps! Dave swings a pool cue at me. I lay out an explanation of what I call "Theological Determinism". Then I push Dave into a barrel of sulfuric acid. We mention R.C. Sproul a few times and wish he had been available to talk to us. Sent me Sproul's cell number and I'll give him a jingle for next time. Nobody has perfect theology so maybe we should just give up the conversation. But instead, we shock each other with cattle prods. Maybe we should strive for a combination of intellect and intuition. Maybe not. I think there's value in thinking. Dave agrees. Then, pistols at 20 paces. Religion and science are not at odds. We need them both. And there are elements of truth in both. Our understanding of both is lacking. Dave quotes the book of Romans. I respond with a karate chop to his throat. David brings up a great point about Abraham and Isaac. For the first time in the conversation, there is no bloodletting. So we talk briefly about 'The Shack' and that leads to punching each other with brass knuckled fists. In the midst, we are critical of people who are critical of us. Tim Keller's book Reason for God enters the conversation. We finally agree that we like that book. Then we discuss David's upcoming tour and how you, Carl, are anxiously awaiting this podcast so you'll have all your answers about Calvinism answered.

Armond & Doc return this week alongside Wes Pendelton to preview the 2016-17 NBA season. Can anybody challenge the Warriors & Cavs? Can Russell Westbrook win the MVP? How good with the TWolves be? It was all fun and games until someone mentioned Cho Aniki. Nintendo Free Radio has returned to both entertain and horrify you before All Hallow's Eve. New Business opens with Stephen's impression of the DSiWare Rouge-Like Anonymous Notes: From The Abyss, and finds it far less frustrating than last episode's FTL. Donald, hot off his Poke-show on RFN 311 (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/32188), chimes in with impressions straight out of 310 - 3DS eShop puzzler Pushmo (or Pullblox, if you're European) and the PSP role-playing classic Persona 3 Portable before teaming up with Austen to tag-team the two versions of Little King's Story (Wii/Vita). Finally, Austen continues the combo with the rather disappointing Rez HD before bringing it home with Pendelton-free impressions of Dishonored. Can Bethesda publish a PS3 game that's actually playable on the system after a few hours? After the chaos of Now Posted, settle in for an extended and animated Whatcha Been Watching segment featuring Stephen's Beast Wars as well as Austen's anime doubleheader of Welcome to the NHK and Hellsing Ultimate (Crispin Freeman not included) and impressions of the pilot of the new Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon. Donald brings things down with a sprint through ESPN's 9.79* documentary, part of the "30 for 30" series. In lieu of a feature, Donald had two quick questions - the first one being a discussion of gender choice in video games (Spoilers: EVERYBODY FEMSHEP!). Finally, Donald offers a thought experiment: With Wii Shop releases about to end, and with 100 points left on his Wii, what does he need to get to end up with 0 points? (http://nintendofreeradio.podbean.com/2012/10/28/nfr-07-companion-donalds-wii-download-list/). Suggestions both serious and not-so-much are bandied about before someone hits the glass-covered big red button and fires man's ultimate weapon. The struggle is mighty, but they power through to the Mushrooms featuring love for Disney classics now on BluRay, SQL clubs, and as disappointment as well in people not performing their civic duty. We always appreciate your feedback on the show, which you can send to nintendofreeradio@gmail.com or leave here. Also, be sure to attend the 3rd annual RFN Child's Play podcast telethon on November 10, and hopefully we'll be able to play a round of Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me! (http://waitwait.npr.org). The limericks are ready and the prizes will flow like wine, but only if your donations get us that far! (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/sitenews/32097)

On November 28, 1988 Elinor Renfield sat down with Austin Pendelton at Westside Arts Theatre to discuss the experience of directing Michael Weller's "Spoils of War". In this candid in-depth interview, Mr. Pendelton discusses this original piece from development to opening just eighteen days after "Spoils"' premiered at the Music Box Theatre on Broadway. He covers the writing process with Weller, casting Kate Nelligan and Alice Playten and rehearsing the roles that would earn them a Tony nomination and a Drama Desk nomination, respectively.
