Besa Luci in conversation with Haris Pašović and Natasha TripneyIn 2022 we published an in-depth article on the theater landscape in Kosovo. Speaking about theater professionals' arduous working conditions, actor Adrian Morina remarked that “Theater is a mirror of all institutions.” Whether or not theater professionals are supported reveals institutions' understanding — or lack thereof — of this art form's significance.. Theaters have always had a dynamic relationship with power structures. Their stages have served as venues for political critique, revolt and reflection. As such, they have played pivotal roles in how our democracies are shaped, questioned or refuted. Particularly in our region, theaters have pushed societies to confront subjects that might otherwise be avoided. We have seen plays on the wars our region has endured that have invited us to face and critically engage with the past. We have encountered plays questioning the international community's role in our region. In a region where freedom does not extend to women, LBGTQ+ individuals and ethnic minorities, we have witnessed how theaters expose societies' flaws. We have also viewed plays on how theaters and artists themselves should become more self-critical, more radical or more vigorous, as the Bosnian theater director Haris Pašović says in an interview published in SEEstage.Haris is one of the guests on the podcast today. He is the director of the East West Centre Sarajevo and a professor of theater and film directing at the Performing Arts Academy in Sarajevo. The other guest is Natasha Tripney, a writer and theater critic based in London. She is international editor at The Stage and co-founder of Exeunt [ekziwnt], a digital theater review. Episode 4 Week of February 10 - Episode 4: An Interview With Dr. Ingrid Larragoity-MartinWelcome: Episode 4 Excited to be joined by Dr. Ingrid Larragoity-Martin today We are going to be looking at two large challenges for teachers today, Apathy and Trauma Teachers are encountering both of these issues more often as each year goes by. The vast majority of us are not equipped to deal with Trauma, while apathy is one of those issues every generation lays at the feet of the one before it…. But teachers are especially concerned about it now. For help with tackling both of these subjects, I am excited to welcome Dr. Ingrid Larragoity-Martin. Dr. Larragoity holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree is instrumental conducting from CU Boulder, and is currently the Director of Bands at the Skyline High School Visual and Performing Arts Academy where I was fortunate to work with her for a time. She is a former faculty member of and Director of Bands at New Mexico State University and Henderson State University. Additionally, she came to Skyline from the South Florida Cares Mentoring Movement. She is one of the most intelligent and capable women I have ever met, and most importantly, she is a dear friend. Welcome Dr. Larragoity! A big subject for us today is trauma, and it seems to me that your work as a Program Director in the CARES movement would give you some expertise in that field. Can you talk to us a little about that? From your perspective as a college director, high school, and community educator… is Trauma itself on the rise? Why are we seeing it more now as public school teachers? Is there more trauma now than when you or I was in public school? ACE is an adverse childhood experience, and we know from research that at least 47% of the student population has experienced at least one of these events. Nearly 22% have experienced more than one. Where are these coming from? 35% of children experience an ACE before they reach kindergarten, and the research also tells us that there are no barriers for this statistic with regard to race, income, or education level. Does that statistic surprise you? Not everyone of us has quick access to trauma-informed teaching strategies that really go in depth. Of course we can jump into about anything we find online, but that doesn’t compare to real training like I’m sure you have experienced first hand. What would you recommend for educators who want to stem this tide? What can we do as one person, or even a small group of people? APATHY There are very few educators I have not heard at one point or another speak about the Apathy in our students. Teachers complain about it, and parents complain about it. The most common response I get from students when we talk about it is, “Well every generation thinks that the one before them was worse”. I would love to get your take on our kids… are they really just apathetic? Do they not care? You have taught in multiple institutions that were all extremely diverse both within, and without. What did you see that was different or similar from Florida, New Mexico, or Colorado? I recently read an article by a journalist named Chris Holmes, and after talking with students in 14 states, he came to the conclusion that students aren’t disengaged… it’s really us, the adults. Is it really us? Are we not adapting fast enough? I have been a teacher for 10 years, and even since I have joined the ranks, I feel like we have implemented a plethora of programs that were not here 10 years ago. Is it that these programs are not implemented well? Is it the programs themselves? We as teachers and teacher-leaders are still extremely limited in what we can do as far as organizational change. What have you found, if anything, that is working for you in the classroom every day? More questions? Any closing thoughts?

Hello and welcome back to the Raising SmART Kids 2.0 podcast! I'm so excited you're tuning in today. I wanted to share a four part series but I previously shared with my performing arts academy but I haven't shared with all of you podcast listeners and this four-part series was called 'What If Wednesdays' and it really let us as parents dive in to think about our kids and think about the experiences we want for them to have whether in school, outside of school or just in general. I wanted to make sure that I shared that here with you especially as we head into the holiday season, things get really really busy so I wanted 1. to keep these episodes really short and really bite-sized for you as we go into a very busy time of year and 2. because we're getting close to Thanksgiving. This is sort of a way for us to take some time and reflect and be grateful for our kids be grateful for who they are and to really be grateful for the people that we know they're going to be as they grow. So, over the next four weeks I will be sharing one little mini bite-sized pieces with you on our What If Wednesday series. If you have questions about any of the things we talked about on the What If series, you can head over to a different Facebook page, and as you may remember we are going to be presenting some amazing new changes in 2018 and one of the things we're going to do is to merge two of our Facebook pages. I currently have a Facebook page for my Performing Arts Academy and a separate one for the podcast. At the time, that made a ton of sense to be able to keep them separate. But because the information that we share on the podcast and they guests that we bring on, the information they're sharing is so, so good that I wanted to make sure that if you're part of the Academy, you get to enjoy the podcast as well. So, as we head into the last few weeks of 2017, we're going to start putting things over on another Facebook page which is currently called Elko Arts Academy. So if you're a local to me, that name will make sense because it's the location where I first opened up my studio 17 years ago. Ifyou're not local to me, no worries. The things we're going to be sharing on that page going into 2018 are relevant for parents of creators. And all kids are born creators-it's just a matter of nurturing that habit of creativity. nurturing and allowing time for creativity in your home and helping kids and equipping them with skills where they can literally create their own brighter futures. With that being said, here's episode number one of What If Wednesday. Cheers! Hey Academy families and future Academy families. I'm Yong Pratt and if I haven't met you yet, I am the founder and director of Academy of the Arts, the author of raising a superhero: how to unleash your child's eight super powers and propel learning through the Arts, and I'm the host of the weekly podcast Raising SmART Kids 2.0. well, it's t-minus two and a half weeks for most kids here in Elko and Spring Creek until school officially begins. Do you have a plan of your kids activities? Are you looking for activities to engage your child's body and their mind? Well, here at the academy we're starting a new weekly series called What If Wednesday and today I have some questions for you. What if you could envision the perfect activities for your child after school? what would they look like? What would your kids learn? Where would they be held? How often would your kids enjoy these activities? These are just a few of the questions I'm curious to know more about and you can just comment below this video and tell me more about what you're looking for. Here at the Academy, we believe that every student that walks through our doors has untapped super powers and together with you we've been put on this planet to help you unleash those super powers and find the right art form to do so if you have questions about classes or want to participate in our What If Wednesday series, I invite you to comment below and I would be happy to reach out to you to talk more about the types of activities that you're looking for for your kids. Over the past 16 years we've helped thousands of families just like yours unleash your kids' special superpowers and we use the arts as a vehicle to help teach kids confidence, instill leadership and teach them about serving their communities and using their talents to do so. Okay my friends, I am gonna hop off now but I want you to think about and comments below What If Wednesday. Today the question is What if you could envision your child's perfect after-school activities? what would they be? When would they meet? How often would they meet and what skills and life skills would you want for your child to learn throughout their experiences? comment below and I will connect with you here on Facebook or I'll give you a call personally. Cheers, my friends thanks for tuning into the Raising SmART Kids 2.0 podcast. We're counting down to episode number 100 and we need your help. Head over to Elko Arts Academy on Facebook and vote for your favorite episodes. We're going to count down listener favorites as well as my own personal favorites over these past 100 episodes. head over to Elko Arts Academy-our temporary page for the podcast before we unveil in 2018 our new name, our new mission, a brand new website, and the new direction for the podcast. Stacy Tuschl is a speaker, business coach, and the owner of The Academy of Performing Arts in Wisconsin. She is the author of the book “Is Your Business Worth Saving?” where she reveals proven strategies for pulling entrepreneurs out of a rut and launching them toward business success. Today, Stacy talks about how the outside view of a business can look so different from what's going on on the inside. She uses a story about a building that she had renovated for her Performing Arts Academy, to point out that you always need to have some savings as a safety net, to help you when you need it. She also encourages you to ensure that you have a line of credit available for unforeseen situations. She explains that credit is something that is usually available when you don't really need it, so it helps to keep it in reserve for when you do. Stacy also talks about budgeting today- and the importance of having a budget that allows for you to have money available to do something fun with, even if you're feeling a little tight. Listen in today as Stacy encourages you to “work while you're waiting” and to “do things bigger and better, whatever that is for your business”. Some highlights include: “All of a sudden you're looking to uplevel your website or uplevel something else in your business.” At minute 7.12, Stacy talks how expenses creep into a business, way down the line. “A lot of successful businesses do this because they're the ones that are taking the risk and investing back in the business.” At minute 7.26, Stacy talks about investing back into your business. “For me, I'm getting so good at waiting for that second marshmallow, because I know, by waiting I will have something even bigger and better with my business.” At minute 8.10, Stacy encourages you to hold on and know that there will be more, down the road. “If you keep thinking I will not go eat out, I will not go to the movies...” At minute 8.50, Stacy encourages you to do something to feel that you are being rewarded, to motivate yourself. “You've got to figure out what do we need to change for next time?” At minute 10.43, Stacy encourages you to keep working out how you're going to keep moving forward with your business. “You need to have a passive income coming in.” At minute 11.03, Stacy talks about the value in setting up a passive income stream. “There's a lot of work to be done in the beginning...” At minute 11.35, Stacy talks about the preparation involved in setting up a passive income stream. “Setting it up as a system, so after it's over, you can turn it into what we call evergreen, right, where it's always running.” At minute 12.58, Stacy talks about creating evergreen aspects to your business. “Yes, there is a lot of sacrifice that comes with being a business owner, or being an entrepreneur, but at the same time, I need you to be rewarding yourself.” At minute 13.23, Stacy talks about the importance of rewarding yourself for your wins. “As soon as that happened, life got so much easier for us.” At minute 14.23, Stacy encourages you to get on the same page financially, as your spouse.
