Throughout our youth we are subtly encouraged to fit into our surroundings, staying on the expected path of taking our studies as far as we can before getting a job. Today's guest didn't do that, dropping out of high school to go work in the retail sector. Because she was a go-getter, she was recruited in 1997 to join in a retail experiment by a telecom carrier. At that time, cellphones were exclusively a corporate thing; they were seeing whether there could be a consumer market for them. That turned out to be a great money-making opportunity. That led to her owning her own physical store called Parlez Wireless, that operated as an authorized dealer for that carrier. She sold the franchise six years later and since then she has been providing consulting support to other businesses in Service and Retail sectors, as well as Speakers, Consultants and Authors. After hearing the unconventional path she took, you can see why her philosophy on marketing isn't the same as everyone else. She believes using those old tired ways yields merely mediocre results, and she wants companies to do better than that. So she teamed up with Alan Weiss in 2022 to write her second book, "Masterful Marketing". I first met her a dozen years ago at a Podcasters Across Borders conference and I'm so glad to have you join me to hear from Lisa Larter. Shownotes include links to all people and products mentioned.
Friday morning I poured a cup of coffee, grabbed my phone, turned on the local news and plopped down on the couch the same as any morning. Sip the coffee. Turn on the phone. It is a process that happens most mornings. My phone was full of messages and wiping away the night I quickly realized that things were not well. A simple comment by someone on a friend’s Facebook wall had started a wave of concern. Was our friend dead? Was it a joke? Was it in reference to his last Facebook post about being sick of all the hate he was seeing everywhere? Messages were sent. Concern grew. Sadly, our worst fears were quickly confirmed. Thursday night, my Friend Bob Goyetche wasn’t feeling good and then he was gone. One moment this loving father and devoted husband was going about his day and the next he was no longer with us. We’ve set up a memorial fund to help pay for his son’s educational costs. Simon is only thirteen and I can’t begin to imagine how he is doing right now. I’ve chatted with his wife and she is holding up better than I would be. I guess when faced with something like this, you find the strength. One of the many things I loved about Bob was that he had no tolerance for bullshit. While he loved podcasting and the good that came via social media, he hated the douchebags that muddied the waters of something he loved. He always told me that he loved it when I went on a rant because he knew I tried to put forth only positivity at all times. We were both members of the 2004 Club. When podcasting first started, we were one of the few out there doing shows and of course we connected. Many long commutes were made bearable listening to episodes of The Bob & AJ Show. I first got to hug the man at Podcamp Boston. I’ll never forget the late night in someone’s hotel room laughing, singing and being complete goofballs. Sadly, I never made it to his conference Podcasters Across Borders. EVERY year something would come up to prevent me from going. Emily’s first play, the death of my grandmother or something else. There are plans to do another one next year in his memory and once the date is announced I’ll start worrying about what may come up to prevent me from going because you can be damn sure it is going to be the highest priority thing on my calendar. Hopefully it doesn’t conflict with Dylan’s graduation. I wish the story ended here with fond memories of Bob and being in a haze of sadness all weekend. Bob liked me best when I ranted, so I know he won’t mind me including one here. In fact I think he’d get a good laugh at it. Shortly after the confirmation came of his passing I shared the above photo of the two of us on Instagram. Bob I’ll never forget all the laughs we shared. You loved my rants and still to this day whenever I get that way a little voice in the back of my head would giggle “Bob is going to appreciate this.” The world lost a great man, a devoted husband and a loving father. Rest In Peace my Friend. I’m going to miss you. A photo posted by C.C. Chapman (@cc_chapman) on Nov 11, 2016 at 4:25am PST Now, if you are not aware there are tools to “help” lazy people comment on Instagram. You give the tools hashtags, people or topics you want to follow, provide it with a handful of generic comments and the tool will go forth and comment on photos following the parameters you set up. The thought is someone will see the comment, click through to your account and follow you. After all, it is all about the numbers right? This has been going on for a while and I have always shook my head and never cared much. Every day I have a couple of accounts that do this. Every week a few new ones swing by. It is obvious once you know what to look for. If someone wants to waste their money on commenting on my photos I don’t care. But, when your robot posts a “Nice!” on my remembrance photo, I am going to lose my shit. I love marketing, but I hate marketers who use lazy tactics or sleazy practices to try and get ahead. As I screamed at my screen, I said something along the lines of “I’m going to burn this motherfucker to the ground!” A tweet and a reply to them on MY Instagram page and then a wave hit me. A true reality bitchslap that I hadn’t had in a long time. These people are not worth the time or energy! Anyone who knows me, knows that I have no tolerance for stupidity. Just ask Ragu or any of the other brands who in the past decided to be stupid and lazy in my direction. That ended this weekend. Ended for good. Forever. One moment I was mourning my dear friend and the next I was screaming about someone that I’ve never met and honestly don’t care one bit about. One man was a Friend and a good person. The other was a lazy marketer who obviously cared more about himself than anyone else. Instead of moving forward as I planned, I stopped. I blocked his accounts and a calm fell over me. I can’t put into words how the wave of emotions shifted inside of me. It honestly felt like a wave of energy and suddenly I found myself feeling completely differently. Sure, he later deleted his comment and reported my own comment to Instagram. He never apologized and probably never will. But, I don’t care. I don’t care one bit about this lazy, sleazy soul. Life is too short to care about those who do things like this. Sure, I’ll use it and future mess ups as case studies in my class (I can’t wait to teach around this one *grin*) but I’m no longer going to go on crusades to try and teach the stupid how to do things better. Why should I? My energy is going to be spent on spending more time with those I care about. I didn’t spend enough time with Bob and now I never can. The rest of the weekend proved to me that this wasn’t just a momentary lapse, but a complete mindset shift for me. Thankfully lunch with an out of town friend, time in the yard chopping wood and getting ready for winter and being surrounded by my family helped me get through all of this. Bob, I miss you and I’m sorry we didn’t get to see each other more. The world lost one of the GOOD guys. noC.C. In this second installment of my interview with Susan Murphy, we talk exclusvely about PAB, the annual New Media event that takes place every year in June in Ottawa Canada. It's not merely about media, it's more fundamental, focusing on ideas and the power of storytelling. If you missed the last episode, check out the first part of the interview, where we talk about creativity and Susan's experience attending Creator Camp a little over a year ago in Ottawa. You will find a full set of show notes and links on the Video StudentGuy blog. This is the last year for PAB and while you can search on the site for posts about my experiences attending years poast, there's no substitute for being there. This is your last chance. It takes place June 8-11 but there's still time to register. I liviein southern New England and it's a good 8 hours or so to get there, but It's more than worth the time and effort.

Welcome to episode #207 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. It's not about whether or not banner advertising works, it's about how we are designing the Internet. More often than not, publishers create pages that are better for their advertisers than they are for their consumers. When that happens, consumers vote with their clicks, their Facebook status updates and with their tweets. The model for the Internet, Marketing and communications is more complex than ever. In this episode of Media Hacks, Christopher S. Penn, Hugh McGuire and myself explore some of the bigger changes that are happening online right now. This includes new developments like Apple's Retina Display as well as what email can (and should) do better. Enjoy the conversation... Ninja gives us the rundown on the economy. It's time to shut down the government for twenty years and start printing money. ...And with all of that, the release of the new iPhone still crashed both the AT&T and Apple website. We are getting tired of being poor and we're not going to take it. We are fine with living in debt... especially if it's cheap. The big debate: do you buy an iPad or wait for the new iPhone 4G and get the next generation iPad? A chat about the new iPhone. It's all about Retina Display. The new iBook shelf can scrape email and work in PDF formats. Once again, we're talking about location. A new conversation about a smarter email system. There is a lot of talk about people not using email in the future. Like Facebook: Email: Press Delete. Managing information is still a struggle and it's not perfect. Can Google Wave save us? Does anybody remember bacn? Hugh gets provocative: Death to Design? Death to the Banner Ad? Loving both Readability and InstaPaper. Avinash Kaushik (Analytics Evangelist, Google and author of Web Analytics 2.0) is all about not being a selfish lover. Text will be displayed in many different ways, so let's make the text more like data. Banners ads vs. Display advertising vs. the needs/wants of the reader. How much stock is there in display advertising? Ad-blocking is bigger than you think. Danny Sullivan's take on Readability and display advertising. Twitter and the new Promoted Tweets. Broadcasting Works (Even In Social Media). Twitter has over 125 million users. Twitter is now Times Square. I rant about why banner advertising really messed up New Media. What is the Internet as a media channel? What can it be? With reading as the primary driver, who designs for the reader? The Huffington Post design works well for them. As does the Craigslist design. What provides comfort is what will win. The flow of iPad usability will change the game (again). Twitter Places is coming. Check out The Deal Map. She suggests reading the book and working through the website Groundswell by Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff. Welcome to the longest show I've posted to date. On average these shows run about 15 minutes and when they've gone over 3o minutes I tend to break them into parts. The main reason for the length, which is about 52 minutes, is the inclusion of multiple comments and excerpts from presentations from PAB. My main goal here is to give you a sense of the event, which is quite unique among conferences. But the downside is how much time it adds to the show. And editing multiple interviews complicates the production process. Even up to the last few hours before posting I found some errors that required me to rerecord some sections. Most of the changes are changes in attributions, another time sink in production, which I got wrong on the first recording pass. I'm satisfied with the final show, even though it's long. If it's a bother, let me know, I'm compressing it down as much as I can. In the future, I'm thinking about using Apple's AAC format, which makes mp3 files smaller but retains higher quality. It also allows me to bookmark and add graphics, but, as far as I know, AAC files only play on iTunes and iPods and I don't want to exclude any listeners. Any thoughts? Because I am including a number of voices besides my own I've added a note at the bottom of the blog that indicates the type of Creative Commons license I'm using, which is attribution, non-commercial, share alike. I'll talk a little more about CC in a future show, right now understand that you can use all or part of this show as long as you include the name of the speaker and where the audio came from. You can't sell it and if you include any part of it in your own podcast you are bound by the same license. Thanks to Connie Crosby for pointing me the the right direction on this topic, for some reason I find the legal aspects of publishing baffling. This show is about my experience at Podcaster's Across Borders and begins with my personal thoughts about the event. Halfway through I have some excerpts of presentations and some brief commentary on what I took away from the experience and then I finish with a series of interviews I recorded at the end of the weekend as the room slowly emptied. It was a great experience and I've put in a lot of effort trying to put into words what it all meant, because, as I try to explain, PAB wasn't your regular new media conference. Lots of people were trying to figure it out besides me. Check out the comments on David Peralty's blog and you'll see a wide range of reactions. If you're just interested in the excerpts I've got the timecode listed below. In addition, all the presentations will be posted at Podcaster's Across Borders throughout the summer. Subscribe!I've also listed the names and URLs of all the people mentioned or heard in this show. Some have podcasts, some blogs and some are thinking about it.If there was any message or call to action people took away from the event (and there was plenty) one of the most important was find your voice and share it. Welcome to episode #112 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. Chock full of audio comments from all over the world, the channels of Mass Media, Social Media and others seem to be colliding in a world where no one is sure what, exactly, advertising is any more (and does it work?). We live in a very message saturated world, and in this episode we try to make heads or tails of it all. Enjoy the conversation... Hey, and you thought you were done with me until September... Well, I presented this talk at the recent meeting of Podcasters Across Borders 2008 in Kingston, ON. My talk was entitled "Social (Media) Science" (pretty clever eh?) Basically I discussed using podcasting, and other online tools, in my classes. This was originally released on the show Canadian Podcast Buffet, and i am posting it here with the permission of a really tall guy named Mark.
There's an interesting event coming up towards the end of this month in Boston. Podcamp Boston 3 takes place July 19th and 20th. You can get directions and other information, including a list of sessions that will take place through the links I've provided here. I attended this event last year, and I talked about it in episode #56. The conference founders, Chris Penn and Chris Brogan, both attended Podcasters Across Borders last weekend and I was fortunate enough to interview Chris Brogan and asked him to weight the advantages of each. I was fortunate enough to interview Chris Brogan for a few minutes between sessions at Podcasters Across Borders and asked him to comment on the two events. I hope you get a better sense of both events through my comments and Chris' interview. There was only a few minutes to chat between some sessions, so our conversation was rushed. I think you'll find if you attend Podcamp Boston 3 that there will more time and space for conversations and meeting new people. I want to say thanks to Chris for talking with me. I know he's going to be at Podcamp and I hope you'll be there too.
Well we are back after an eventful few weeks, but more on that later. Today we were off to Cambodia, the land of the Khmer people (and a few Vietnamese, a few Chinese and a few ‘others’ as they say. One cannot talk about Cambodia without talking about the murderous, genocidal regime of Pol Pot. Dave read a book back in high school called ‘Sideshow’ by New York Times writer William Shawcross. This book talked about the reasons behind the rise of the Khmer Rouge, and gives a theory as to why they came to power. If you want to know the theory you could always buy the book, or listen. ... As usual, Isabelle was interested in more happy stuff. She has a knack for that. To quote her, “while I was playing in the fields of Cap-Rouge and being a free and happy child, horrors were taking place on the other side of the planet. I don't know why anyone needs to believe that there is a devil, a fallen angel, a Lucifer when ordinary people are quite capable of imagining worst fates for others than ever one imaginary Diablo, or Shiva, could do...I decided to celebrate the beauty of Cambodia and to call it a celebration of life because now life has returned.” She talked about Cambodian dancing, which is a descendant of Indian dancing it seems. We saw happy people on youtube making cheesy videos, so really maybe they are getting back to normal and not that different from us. After a little break we talked a bit about Podcasters Across Borders 2008 (PAB2008) a conference that Dave attneded and gave a presentation at. Dave had a pretty good time seeing old friends etc. Finally we talked about Dave’s Dad who died on June 2, 2008. Dave learned a lot from RB, and he was always there for us. We miss him, but, he will never be forgotten. RB would be interested to know that Cambodia is unranked by the International Ice Hockey Federation... Next time, it is off to Greece!
Vacation week coming up. That means time to edit my final project. Woo hooSince I took off the last days of this class I got an F. But, but once I hand in the assignments it will be turned into a pass. If I do a really good I may get a high pass, or, gulp, a very high pass. Lots of motivation there. There's 4 weeks left to the end of class. I'm going to miss it once it's gone. I am looking forward to finishing my film without the distraction of class attendance and assignments. I guess you could say I've already checked out.Once again I'm talking about Podcasters Across Borders without providing any clips from the interviews I recorded. Coming up, I promise. Check out and sign up for Podcamp Boston 3 if you're in the area. Take a look at the sessions being offered. It's just a good, only different.Speaking of good conversation in a hallway, I end the show with some perspective I got from Federico about the whole point of this filmmaking program, which is getting a job being a filmmaker. This was a familiar message, but I saw something new that I hadn't before. I got it that I don't need to treat this like the last film I will ever make. It won't be if I end up using it to get a job making the next film. People are going to recognize, regardless how much time and attention I lavish on this project, the essential value I add to the filmmaking process. If they are professional they'll filter out the flaws and see the potential. Its hard to have that much faith in yourself, or other people. But I don't want to leave you on a downer man. Right now I'm excited about editing my film and I'll probably be at school as often as I have been, so I can concentrate - and knowledgeable people will be available to help me see a clear path to the finish. Just like in production, you don't make a film with just one person.
TransCanada Transpondency Adam Gratrix continues on another 2 week adventure across Canada with his travel companion Damien. A travelogue, of sorts. Part 6: Podcasters Across Borders in Kingston, Ontario, June 20-22, 2008. Canadian podcasters, along with their American podcasting peers, gather together to strengthen the community, their craft, and nurture creativity. Also, it's a great excuse to have a few drinks with new friends.
I'm attending a new media conference called Podcasters Across Borders in Kingston, Ontario Canada this weekend. There's going to be lots of interesting people to meet and things to hear and learn. There's not much else in this show except my expectations.I created this episode so that I could pare it down to under 3 minutes and submit it to the PAB site as a teaser for this show. They're taking audio submissions from attendees that represent their own show. I figured I would just use the opportunity to talk about my expectations of the event, how I feel about the potential of new media and tie in what my show is about. It is an interesting experience cutting down something to meet a another purpose - sort of like creating a trailer of a movie.Take a look at the teaser page and listen to my audio and compare it to this show. And listen to the other shows, there's a lot of great entertainment and information represented on that page.I'll give you updates when I get back next week and hopefully include some interviews.
