Bloating, gas, constipation, and food intolerances — you've probably experienced these symptoms before. In fact, a study evaluating gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms in Americans found that out of 71,812 people, 61 percent reported GI problems in the last week. Experiencing gut health issues is nothing to take lightly, though... For example, "leaky gut" — an increase in intestinal permeability — can allow toxins, bacteria, and undigested food particles into the bloodstream, potentially causing inflammation and autoimmune reactions. Disruptions in the gut-brain axis may also contribute to conditions like anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders. Additionally, malabsorption of nutrients in the gut can lead to deficiencies in essential vitamins and minerals. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. In this "Best of Gut Health" compilation episode, you'll embark on a journey through the world of gut health with my top subject matter experts, getting the opportunity to explore alternatives to GLP-1 weight loss drugs and the latest in probiotics, uncovering the secrets of microbiome testing and its impact on your mood, gaining insights into the delicate balance of a child's microbiome, unlocking the intricate link between eating disorders and gut health, delving into the power of cold thermogenesis in triggering fat loss, and much more! Each of my guests offers a deep dive into gut health, bringing a unique perspective to the table. Dr. Coleen Cutcliffe emphasizes the role of specific bacteria in stimulating GLP-1 production and highlights the importance of a high-fiber diet in this process, which metabolizes into short-chain fatty acids, ultimately influencing insulin responses, blood sugar regulation, and food cravings. Meanwhile, Dr. Patrick Hanaway sheds light on microbiome testing, explaining the significance of individual biomarkers like calprotectin and pancreatic elastase in assessing gut health. He also touches on the impact of gut bacteria on mood and the emerging field of psychobiotics. On the other hand, Raja Dhir discusses supporting children's microbiome, stressing factors like breastfeeding and diet diversity in shaping an infant's gut microbiome. Additionally, Dr. Lauryn Lax explores the concept of total gut reset, linking eating disorders to gut health and discussing strategies for managing conditions like constipation. Lastly, Joel Greene tackles the role of cold thermogenesis in weight loss, explaining its impact on fat loss and sharing tips for optimizing this process for better results. With a wealth of expert perspectives, tips, biohacks, and more, this show is tailor-made for anyone experiencing gut health issues and searching for answers. Power Quotes From The Show Microbiome As a Dynamic Ecosystem "Because the microbiome is so unique people think that they need something individualized for them otherwise there's no hope of changing it. It's actually not true. It's a very dynamic ecosystem and it's highly personalized. There're dietary recommendations that would be the same for everyone." - Raja Dhir Optimizing Gut Microbiome "Everyone's optimizing for something else. Everyone has different methods and until everyone's looking at the same information set, using the same methods, it's really hard to compare the quality of different data sets. The better way to do it is to functionally understand what your microbiome is doing. Is it making a lot of organic acids? Does it have a lot of organisms that have genes that we know are positive for fiber degradation or converting dietary nutrients or are inflammatory or help to rebuild the gut barrier? This is the level that we're at. We're looking at really clear features and trying to look at the prevalence of those features in different people vs their absence in others." - Raja Dhir Healthy Bowel Movement "Most people just learn over life to cope and assume that bowel movement an irregular, unpredictable, and even potentially something that requires force. You should have little to no strain, ease of expulsion, manageable to no amounts of persistent gas, you shouldn't have bloating, and you shouldn't have many sensitivities to diverse plant matters, especially roughage. If you go through that simple checklist and then compare that to the Bristol stool chart, and see your stool quality coming out (the color, the shape, the texture, the hydration( those are your best indicators. Anything that you do beyond that is about optimizing. This is the day-to-day thing you should ask yourself because that's your first signal for how the whole system is functioning." - Raja Dhir Links From Today's Show Seed - 35% off your first month's supply of DS-01 Daily Synbiotic with code "JOSH" Mind Pump Media Ara Katz Paul Chek Shop the Wellness Force Media Store Organifi – Special 20% off to our listeners with the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' breathwork.io BON CHARGE - Save 15% with the code "JOSH15" MANNA Vitality - Save 20% with the code "JOSH20" Mendi.io - Save 20% with the code "JOSH20" Cured Nutrition CBD - Save 20% with the CODE "WELLNESSFORCE" PLUNGE – Save $150 with the code “WELLNESSFORCE" LiftMode - Save 10% with the code "JOSH10" Organifi – Special 20% off to our listeners with the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' HVMN - Get 20% off your Ketone IQ order with the code "JOSH" MitoZen – Save 10% with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” Paleovalley – Save 15% on your ACV Complex with the code ‘JOSH' NOOTOPIA - Save 10% with the code "JOSH10" ActivationProducts – Save 20% with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” NEUVANA - Save 15% with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” SENSATE - Save $25 on your order with the code "JOSH25" DRY FARM WINES - Get an extra bottle of Pure Natural Wine with your order for just 1¢ ION - Save 15% off sitewide with the code ‘JOSH1KS' Feel Free from Botanic Tonics – Save $40 when you use the code ‘WELLNESS40′ Drink LMNT – Zero Sugar Hydration: Get your free LMNT Sample Pack, with any purchase BREATHE - Save 20% by using the code “PODCAST20” Essential Oil Wizardry: Save 10% with the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' NEUROHACKER - Save 15% with the code "WELLNESSFORCE" ALIVE WATER - Save 33% on your first order with the code "JOSH33" M21 Wellness Guide Wellness + Wisdom Community Leave Wellness + Wisdom a review on Apple Podcasts Raja Dhir Instagram Facebook Twitter About Raja Dhir A life sciences entrepreneur, Raja Dhir has unique expertise in translating scientific research including scaling up both facultative and strict anaerobic organisms. Raja Dhir, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Seed Health, sits down to discuss insights he’s gained about ecosystem design from his time spent studying bacteria and microbiomes, and how he applies those lessons to his business.Dhir and host of #ThePlaybook, David Meltzer, chat about the validity of the “selfish” argument for taking care of your health, the importance of working with the most talented people in a given field, and why Raja says that every one technological breakthrough leads to ten companies. Dhir also shares some predictions for how the business world will adapt to the changes brought on by COVID-19.
In Part 2 of my series on endurance training, I’ll show you how to adopt a more intelligent, more ancestrally aligned, lower-risk approach to marathon running and I’ll describe how to maintain the endurance and durability needed to complete the race in a way that is safe, healthy, and leaves you with more energy than when you started. You’ll learn how to avoid burnout and discover how to bridge the gap between the levels of fitness required to sustain a modern, mostly sedentary, lifestyle and the stamina and strength needed to successfully complete an endurance run. I’ll talk about how walking is the cornerstone of my marathon training program and describe how to maximize your recovery by getting your body accustomed to spending time on its feet for the amount of time you expect your race to take. Above all, I’ll focus on an integrated approach that aims to build strength and stability and makes it easier for you to find creative ways to fit the training program into your life. Magnesium is the body’s “master mineral” powerful over 300 critical reactions, including detoxification... fat metabolism... energy... EVEN digestion is influenced by the presence of magnesium. There are two big problems here: Magnesium has been largely missing from US soil since the 1950s... which explains why it’s estimated that up to 80% of the population may be deficient...Most supplements contain only 1 or 2 forms of magnesium... when in reality there are at least 7 that your body needs and benefits from. The good news is that when you do get all 7 critical forms of magnesium, pretty much every function in your body gets upgraded, from your brain, to your sleep, to your pain and inflammation, it all improves... and fast. That’s why I’m so excited about what my friends over at BiOptimizers—makers of industry-leading digestive supplements—have just created. Their research team recently formulated what I believe is the ultimate magnesium supplement, with all 7 forms of this mineral. Seed, on the other hand, has 23 strain-specific clinical studies behind it that demonstrate its effectiveness. Their innovative 2-in-1 capsule also nests the probiotics inside a prebiotic (sourced from Indian pomegranate and organic wild-harvested Scandinavian chaga and pine bark) capsule for additional protection, ensuring the probiotics actually get where they need to be inside of you—your gut.Use code STACKED at seed.com for 20% off your first month of the Daily Synbiotic!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/join/stacked)
In Episode 95, Quinn & Brian ask: Are we finally able to upgrade our microbiome (also, what’s a microbiome (also, why does it need upgrading))? Our guest is: Raja Dhir, Co-Founder of Seed, a microbiome company pioneering the application of bacteria for both human and planetary health. He leverages years of expertise translating scientific research for product development to lead Seed’s R&D, academic collaborations, technology development, clinical trial design, supply chain, and intellectual property strategy. So, what is a microbiome? Overly simply put, it’s the 38,000,000,000,000 little guys in and on your body that help you do stuff; the bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and viruses that work symbiotically and allow us to function. Interest in the field grew rapidly around 2015, but Raja thought the rate of innovation and commercial response was lacking, not to mention the science behind many of the products that were being created. So Seed leveraged the “foundry model” to support many startups in the field, driving innovations in everything from immunology to hygiene to cancer treatments while performing trials that were scientifically sound and blind as hell. They’re trying to learn all they can about the superorganism that is a human being and then make it better so that we can both live better lives and stop creating so many things that harm the planet. “Your brain's best friend is your gut. You can't separate the two. If you have an unhealthy gut, it's going to affect your brain.”Will Bulsiewicz, MDWe are living in a moment of compounding collective stress---personal, pandemic, economic, civic, and political. This trauma and tumult comes with side effects both physical and psychological. How do we take care of our bodies during this incredibly stressful moment? Furthermore, how do we buttress our immune system to combat the virus? The answer, we are increasingly coming to understand, begins with the microbiome. In fact, you might be surprised to learn, the gut is home to 70% of our immune system. To glean a better understanding of what that means, I convened with Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, a lauded gastroenterologist & gut health guru whose life’s work is devoted to better comprehending the microbiome and the crucial role it plays in all facets of health, from brain function and hormone balance to weight management and everything in between.Affectionately known as 'Dr. B', Will is a graduate of Georgetown School of Medicine and a former chief medical resident at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and chief gastroenterology fellow at the University of North Carolina Hospitals. In addition, he received his Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) from Northwestern University and a certificate in nutrition from Cornell University. He's authored more than twenty articles in the top American gastroenterology journals and his New York Times bestselling book, Fiber Fueled: The Plant Based Gut Health Program For Losing Weight, Restoring Your Health, and Optimizing Your Microbiome, is a must-read primer on why gut health is so crucial--and everything you need to know to optimize it.Since the beginning of the pandemic, I’ve lamented the mainstream media's lack of attention to caring for our immune system. So today we dive in.This is a conversation about all things microbiome and gut health. The mechanisms behind it and latest research findings. We discuss our epidemic of dysbiosis (lack of gut biome balance) and its relation to a litany of chronic diseases that unnecessarily plague too many. We explore the gut-brain connection. The paramount need to increase the biodiversity in our bodies and our environments. And (sorry carnivores) why fiber is king.In addition, in this time of excessive sterilization and sequestration, Dr. B provides practical takeaways on how we can improve our gut flora and optimize our immune system, without putting ourselves and others at risk. And finally, we talk fecal transplants. Because, let's face it, I can’t have a gastroenterologist on the show and not ask about that.It was an honor to to converse with Dr. B--a fresh, new mind making big waves on the plant-based, microbiome scene. Passionate, empathetic and whip-smart, I enjoyed every minute. And I promise you will walk away from this episode armed to take your health to the next level.Note: I first came across Dr. B's work by way of his many appearances on my friend Simon Hill's wonderful Plant Proof Podcast (which you should all check out). The pandemic prevented an in-person exchange, so this conversation was recorded remotely a few months ago. Apologies in advance for any audio issues. We did the best we could.Final Note: Will just released The Plant-Fed Gut, a comprehensive 7-week online course about microbiome health and reversing dysbiosis that goes beyond what he was able to offer in his book. This week’s conversation is with Raja Dhir, the Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Seed Health, a microbial sciences company pioneering applications of bacteria to impact human and environmental health. Now some of you may already be familiar with what the microbiome is but for those who aren’t, I’ll share a brief summary of it via Harvard’s School of Public Health.Picture a bustling city on a weekday morning, the sidewalks flooded with people rushing to get to work or to appointments. Now imagine this at a microscopic level and you have an idea of what the microbiome looks like inside our bodies, consisting of trillions of microorganisms (also called microbiota or microbes) of thousands of different species. These include not only bacteria but fungi, parasites, and viruses. In a healthy person, these “bugs” coexist peacefully, with the largest numbers found in the small and large intestines but also throughout the body. The microbiome is even labeled a supporting organ because it plays so many key roles in promoting the smooth daily operations of the human body. Each person has an entirely unique network of microbiota that is originally determined by one’s DNA.A person is first exposed to microorganisms as an infant, during delivery in the birth canal and through the mother’s breast milk.Exactly which microorganisms the infant is exposed to depends solely on the species found in the mother. Later on, environmental exposures and diet can change one’s microbiome to be either beneficial to health or place one at greater risk for disease. The microbiome consists of microbes that are both helpful and potentially harmful. Most are symbiotic (where both the human body and microbiota benefit) and some, in smaller numbers, are pathogenic (promoting disease). In a healthy body, pathogenic and symbiotic microbiota coexist without problems. But if there is a disturbance in that balance—brought on by infectious illnesses, certain diets, or the prolonged use of antibiotics or other bacteria-destroying medications—dysbiosis occurs, stopping these normal interactions. As a result, the body may become more susceptible to disease. And so this is where Raja’s company, Seed comes into play.Seed partners with leading scientists to translate breakthrough science into live biotherapeutics and innovations for consumer health with a portfolio targeting conditions where bacteria can become or replace the primary standard of care.Seed, develops scientifically-validated, next-generation probiotics with a mission to bring much-needed precision, efficacy, and education to the global probiotics market.Raja believes the magic happens at the intersection of technology, systems biology, and translational science. He’s got a unique way of thinking and follows those thoughts with action. And that’s what this conversation is really about— how to take an idea powerful enough to change the world for the better and make it a reality?------Please support our partners! We're able to keep growing and creating content for YOU because of their support. Raja Dhir is a life sciences entrepreneur and Co-Founder of Seed, a venture-backed microbiome company pioneering the application of bacteria for both human and planetary health. After our groundbreaking interview with his co-founder, Ara Katz, on Green Dreamer's episode 109, we knew we had to bring Raja on the podcast as well to learn from his complementing scientific expertise leading Seed's research and development, academic collaborations, technology development, clinical trial design, supply chain, and intellectual property strategy. On this podcast episode, Raja sheds light on common misconceptions of what "probiotics" are and what a healthy microbiome should look like; why we perhaps need to learn from how the Amish people live; how our knowledge of probiotics can be applied to address ecological challenges such as our honey bees' colony collapse disorder; and more. “We are, by definition, an ecosystem. The microbiome reveals a more connected biology, radically transforming our approach to medicine, hygiene, diet, and living.”Ara Katz & Raja DhirOur bodies are comprised of about ten trillion cells. But our microbiome — all the bacteria, viruses, and fungi that live in or on our bodies – outnumber human cells by a factor of 10.Indeed, we are far more microorganism than human. Moreover, rapidly developing science reveals the vast extent to which the nature of our personal microbiome drives not only our propensity for disease and digestive health, but also, quite surprisingly, can dictate our mental disposition, cognitive function, and even our specific food cravings.Today we take a magnifying glass to the mind-blowing netherworld of microbiota to illuminate their implications not just on human health, but the well-being of planet Earth at large. Our stewards for this fantastic voyage are Ara Katz and Raja Dhir, the co-founders of Seed, a venture backed microbiome company at the pioneering edge of bacteria science.Ara is a serial entrepreneur and fellow at the MIT Media Lab’s Center for Future Storytelling and CCA’s DesignMBA program. She was named one of the “50 Most Influential Women in America” by Marie Claire, listed on Business Insider’s “Silicon Alley Top 100” and “36 Rockstar Women in NYC Tech”, and was recently included in Create + Cultivate’s 100 List for STEM.One of the most knowledgeable people I have ever met when it comes to our rapidly evolving understanding of the microbiome, Raja is a life sciences entrepreneur and a member of the Microbiome Think Tank at Mass General Hospital. He sits on the editorial board for the scientific journal Microbiome as well as the advisory committee for the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics. In addition, he is a director and co-chair of the scientific advisory board for Micropia, a $20MM microbial ecology and education platform as well as the world’s first museum dedicated to microbes.Today we cover it all.First, we define the microbiome. We discuss the difference between prebiotics and probiotics. And to cut through the consumer confusion fomented by gut health commodification, we separate fact from fiction by examining the difference between an effective priobiotic and the countless food and supplement products simply marketed as such. Most importantly, we explore what the latest science tells us about the power of microbes to heal our bodies, positively impact childhood development, reinvigorate the quality of our soil and improve the overall ecology of Planet Earth — including some amazing work Ara & Raja are doing with bee populations.Seed Offer: As a simple thanks for listening, Ara & Raja have a gift for you. During our discussion, you'll learn: -Why we misunderstand probiotics, and especially probiotic research...8:30 Raja's research paper: We're understanding more and more about the gut and microbiome every day An organism must show that it has a specific effect on the body before the term "probiotic" can be used The term "probiotic" is unregulated in the United States Consumers are way ahead of the science Proper definition of a probiotic: live microorganisms, which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host Unscientific research on probiotics has led to damage in credibility in the field Taking one single data set that's not causative and applying the results to the entire field is an unscientific practice -The recent studies on probiotics that Raja mentions, and sometimes criticizes, in his work...13:45 Got subjects to consent to invasive small intestinal biopsies, versus just the colon Ordinarily you test the large intestine only An over emphasis on testing stool samples Fallacy: Collecting large amounts of data will give you an accurate answer How classical biologists are different: Have a hypothesis, Narrow down an intervention, Test (in a large enough sample size) and look for biomarkers that change in the host How the test worked: Gave 3 groups of people large amounts of antibiotics Gave one group probiotics, one group allowed to recover spontaneously (watchful waiting), third group FMT; their own stool injected back in rectally Hypothesis: What's the fastest way of recovering to your normal base line? After 90 days, everything lost statistical significance; all 3 groups indistinguishable from one another 3 things you can do to improve an infant's health Vaginal birth Not having antibiotics during birth (if you have a c-section) Breast feeding Do at least 2 of the 3 correctly, you dramatically increase the chances that the infant's microbiome will develop normally Science should not be a sensationalistic field Temptation to exploit research for short-term PR gains -What regulations or standardizations exist when it comes to the microbiome and probiotics...23:25 Contract manufacturers: used by big dairy companies, big business, probiotics found in local grocery stores European facilities are better equipped due to dietary differences Species vs Strains: Ex: Chihuahuas and dobermans are different strains of the same species Some strains are up to 70% different from strains of the same species Must be tested on humans, otherwise should be called a microbial product vs. a probiotic product Some less disciplined companies benefit from the existing ambiguities in the probiotic field -Raja's answer to the flaws in probiotic research he discusses in his paper and in his work...27:15 The paper concludes with an optimistic view; possible changes in the next 5 years Click for a table of Physiological and metabolic processes influenced by the human microbiome according to Raja's research paper. Activating a switch in the body that prevents and reverses food allergies Minimum requirements before anything should call itself a probiotic Declare the genus, the species and the strain Undergo minimum one human clinical trial If you didn't get all that, get this: While there is tremendous potential and reason for optimism in the field of probiotics, overuse of the term in the media and commercial use "cheapens" it and could discourage serious scientists from pursuing it to its full potential. -How (or if) probiotics interact with the microbiome...34:30 Article: Probiotics are "transient microbes"; they don't take up permanent residence in any part of the body "Seeding" is the process by which an infants microbiome is first colonized by microbes Typical time a probiotic stays in the microbiome is ~8 weeks Daily consumption is necessary (kind of like coffee) Why not just eat fermented foods all the time? Only 4-5 out of several hundred bacterial strains in kimchi had probiotic potential (by the standards laid out in Raja's paper) Kombucha companies should do randomized controlled trials Terms like "immunity" and "anti-inflammatory" are misleading Certain bacteria can become "extinct" in as little as 4 generations when fiber is removed or reduced Certain populations do not need to take a probiotic because of their lifestyle and diet (ex. the ) "Detoxification" is oftentimes a misnomer; The body has its own detoxification pathways that are regulated by the nrf2 transcription factor Triggers for activation of the pathways: extended exercise, access to wide variety of phytonutrients, Things that are bad for you are good for you -The varying effects from different species and strains of probiotics...46:35 Biotransformational nutrients: take existing food particles and convert into secondary metabolites and unlock new nutrients Probiotics supplement the existing micronutrients and gut bacteria "Consuming little soldiers that make their own multi-vitamins" Pomegranate is standardized for : turned by already existing bacteria in the gut into Urolithin A Article: Potential anti-aging benefits Thesis: How can we unlock the power of microbes or bacteria to confer benefits to their human hosts -How probiotics affect males and females differently...52:35 Women have a longer digestive tract than men, which leads to more issues with the digestive system Females could benefit from a folate producer in their gut during pregnancy; would be out of place in a male Environment, diet are of far more significance than gender -Raja's take on companies who recommend particular probiotic strains to consume based on tests of the gut and microbiome...56:10 Still no consensus on what determines a healthy microbiome Recommending a particular product based on test results is problematic Genus vs. species vs. strain recommendations; the more specific the better results "Relative abundance" vs. "absolute abundance" Better approach: take specific strains identified to treat specific issues Stratification, personalized approach, is not the optimal goal The gold standard is a microbe that is applicable to the entire human (or mammal) population and has reproducible effects To conclude: There are some good things about microbiome tests; however, use caution when they recommend certain products based on the test results -Whether personalized microbiome testing will allow people to target a probiotic species for their specific gut profile...1:03:00 Yes, but it will not look anything like the probiotics that are on the market today Some organisms won't grow if other like organisms are not in the mixed community The gut is an ecosystem; ecosystem theory comes into play Diversity and seasonality of plants rich in phytonutrients and high fiber foods -The importance of the CFU (colony forming unit) of a probiotic...1:10:24 Depends on the study and the trial Shotgun approach: inject high density of organisms into the gut and hope for the best Before you take any probiotic... Ask the company to show the studies on their strains Have they been studied in a human population And for what end points -What Raja is most excited about with ...1:18:10 Get 15% off your first order from SEED when you use discount code: GREEN15 -And much more...
