This month, two behemoths of British culture crashed into one another, when the new season of Doctor Who featured a much-anticipated Beatles episode called “The Devil's Chord.” Both fandoms have been hoping for this crossover episode for years, and we finally got it, complete with an incredible new villain played by Jinkx Monsoon. Erika is joined by James Ryan and Ed Chen, who both have one foot solidly planted in both of these fandoms, giving us an excuse to nerd out over these worlds colliding. With their love of Doctor Who, the Beatles, and alternate history stories, there are few people more qualified to talk about this topic. James (Jim) Ryan is the author of the novels Raging Gail and Red Jenny and the Pirates of Buffalo, as well as the popular history The Pirates of New York and short stories in numerous anthologies. He writes the column “Fantasia Obscura” for Forces of Geek, continuing on from his initial run at REBEAT. A lifelong Beatles fan, his alternate-history stories of the Beatles have been published in a collection called Alt Together Now. Ed Chen is the co-creator and co-host of the When They Was Fab and the Toppermost of the Poppermost podcasts. He tells us that somewhere, buried in his deep dark past is a Beatles/Doctor Who fanfic, where he “Mary Sue'd” himself and his friends into the companion roles. We'll be talking about just some of the many connections between the Beatles and Doctor Who, including their shared timeline, actors who played both Doctors and Beatles, and the many Beatles references over Doctor Who's 60-year history. We'll also recap the Beatles-specific parts of the Doctor Who/Beatles episode, “The Devil's Chord.” We've kept this episode focused on the Beatles-related elements of both the history and the episode, and we'll be discussing spoilers for “The Devil's Chord.” If you want more Doctor Who, the When They Was Fab podcast has an extended cut of this conversation with a deeper dive into the Doctor Who side of things. --------------------- Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter/X for photos, videos, and more from this episode & past episodes — we're @bcthebeatles everywhere. This week marks what would have been George Harrison's birthday… or is it birthdays? So we pulled one of our most popular episodes out of the archives in his honor. We're looking at George's early life in Liverpool, his all-encompassing guitar obsession, and the talent that even impressed the much-older John Lennon. Plus, we attempt to get to the bottom of the age-old question: what is George's actual birthday? It's the 60th anniversary of the Beatles' first American visit and their groundbreaking appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show. We're tracing the twists and turns that brought the Beatles to America, and opened the doors to a cultural revolution in the process. And we tell the story of Erika's grandfather, the jazz guitarist who met the Beatles, got his picture taken by none other than Paul McCartney, and maybe… overdubbed George Harrison on The Ed Sullivan Show? Rebeat's interview with Louise Harrison More about Erika's grandfather, Hy White, and his encounter with the Beatles “Take My Break, Please:” McCall and Brill's opportunity of a lifetime—an appearance on Ed Sullivan—became a disaster, thanks to being on the bill with the Beatles (This American Life) --------------------- +Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter/X for photos, videos, and more from this episode & past episodes — we're @bcthebeatles everywhere. +Follow BC the Beatles on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you're listening now. +Buy us a coffee! www.ko-fi.com/bcthebeatles +Contact us at bcthebeatles@gmail.com.
In March of this year, we published a Rebeat of one of our most powerful episodes, It Could Have Been Different. We took a deep dive into one of the most difficult aspects of our jobs as emergency physicians - recognizing and managing child abuse, or non-accidental trauma (NAT). Signs of abuse can often be subtle, but there are some very specific findings that should make us consider NAT. Our guest expert, Dr. Mary Clyde Pierce, helped us learn to identify NAT using the TEN-4 FACESp clinical prediction rule. In this episode, Dr. Pierce returns to discuss the new LCAST app developed by Lurie Children's Hospital to help clinicians identify NAT. We love this app! It's quick and easy to use - and it's even better than using the decision rule alone. Listen to the episode to hear why! Have you tried the LCAST app? It's time for another Repeat! This is one of our earliest episodes and it is a favorite because of one woman's powerful story. Annika Huff (formerly Annika Mack) is a survivor of human trafficking. She speaks with us about her experiences in the life, how she got out, and how she was able to move on with her life. Then, Dr. Bryn Mumma takes us through her research on how we can better identify potential victims in the ED. Dr. Rachel Robitz shares some advice on how to approach patients who may be trafficked, create a safe space, and offer support and resources. And, finally, our own Dr. Julia Magaña discusses how she manages this in pediatric patients. Stay tuned for our next episode for important new research and updates! It's time for another Rebeat! We're revisiting one of our favorite episodes from our very first season. The opioid epidemic is still very real and there are some new challenges with fentanyl as the predominant opioid on the street. But we've gained experience with medication assisted treatment (MAT) and it is now even easier to prescribe treatment for opioid use disorder. The Rebeat has been edited to reflect some of these changes, and our next episode will provide an update on MAT. Now on to the Rebeat… Let's talk about the opioid crisis. One woman tells her powerful story of opioid addiction, treatment, and recovery. Then, we discuss the role emergency physicians can play in controlling this epidemic with experts, Dr. Gail D'Onofrio and Dr. Josh Elder. How do you manage opioid use disorder in your practice? Ron Dante was born in Staten Island, NY. He was a member of the Detergents, whose “Leader of the Laundromat” made the Top 40 when he was just 20 years old. He was working with Don Kirshner and singing and songwriting with the Brill Building group of artists such as Carole King, Tony Orlando, and Neil Sedaka before most of them became household names. He's produced several Broadway musicals, including the Tony Award-winning Ain't Misbehavin'. He produced Barry Manilow's hit albums, sang backup on “Mandy,” basically discovered Pat Benatar, and then, of course, there's work as the voice of the Archies and the Cuff Links. The question shouldn't be who was he — it should be who wasn't he. He's done everything, and he's still doing it. He's the one and only Ron Dante. REBEAT: I read that you were from a musical family and your dad sang around the house a lot and that's where your love of music came from. RON DANTE: Yes, my dad wasn't a professional singer but he loved to sing as did his six brothers. When we'd go to a wedding, everybody would get up and sing, everybody was a ham. I heard music very early in my life. My dad loved his records and had a big stack of 78s on the record player. He'd run a string to the couch so he could change the records and listen to six or seven records in a row. I listened to the Platters, Patti Page, and then I discovered Elvis when I was 10, and that changed my life completely. A few years later, I fell from a tree and injured my arm, and the doctor said I needed to exercise it, to do something to work the arm. I decided I'd play the guitar, so Dad bought me one. Then when I was about 14, I put my first band together, the Persuaders. One New Year's Eve, I made $75 playing, so I said, “Well, this is the profession I want to be in!” I mean, I'm 14 and made $75 for one gig, and my dad worked all week for $50. I said, “This is something I can do.” You made the Detergents record, “Leader of the Laundromat,” in 1965. But before that had you already started working with Don Kirshner? How did all of that play out? Even before the Detergents record, I got a job as a staff singer and demo-maker with Don Kirshner when I was 17 years old. I was signed to a publishing contract and told to write songs. I was in the New York office with artists like Carole King and Tony Orlando and Neil Sedaka. It was amazing. This publishing company was one of the hottest in the world. Don Kirshner gave me my start in the business. I'll forever be grateful to him for that opportunity. I got to see all these writers, the way they produced their demos, I got to see the singers, I actually got to sing background on some of Neil Sedaka's early hits. As a teenager out of Staten Island, I had the opportunity of a lifetime. The Detergents song did well, but tell me about the years between that song and your time as the voice of the Archies. As the Detergents song peaked, we went on the road with the Dick Clark Caravan of Stars and toured for about a year then came back home and set up an office where I was going to be a songwriter and producer. I started doing commercials and any odd job I could just to stay in the music business. I actually ended up writing a Broadway show. I had done backgrounds for a friend of mine named Jeff Barry, who was writing the score for a Broadway production. He said, “You should be the voice of this rock band that's in the show.” I did it but the show closed after a couple of weeks, but I had the chance to meet a variety of people, and some of them said, “You're a songwriter. We have this property we want to do, a version of Billy Budd by Herman Melville. We want to make it a rock opera.” So at 20 years old, I wrote a rock opera that was on Broadway. It was unbelievable and a great opportunity. We raised about half a million dollars to put that show on. We didn't get good reviews, but it was a learning experience. But I must say that everything that happens to me either I'm a winner, or I learn. I met a lot of great people who were important to know along the way. Ten years after Billy Budd, my Ain't Misbehavin show came along. Everything happens for a reason. So you're working with Broadway shows, but we're moving into that period where “Sugar, Sugar” comes along. I read somewhere that because of your connections to Don Kirshner, you heard they were looking for a voice for the lead on the Archies and asked for an audition. Is that basically what happened? Actually, a friend of mine was playing keyboard in the band doing the tracks for the new Archies show that Jeff Barry and Don Kirshner were putting together. They didn't have any singers, but they had musicians, and one of the musicians was the best man at my wedding. He said, “You know Don Kirshner. You should call him and come over and be the voice.” So I told him I would, and I called and went in for an audition, sang one of the songs, and got the job of being the voice of Archie on the songs. It was great working with people I knew; it was like a homecoming. Jeff Barry and Andy Kim wrote “Sugar, Sugar,” but did they write it for the program or was the song already written and just used for the program? The word I got from Andy was that Jeff called him and said, ”We need a single for the show, we need a hit. What do you think we should do?” and over the phone, Andy said, “Why don't you do something like this? [Sings] ‘Sugar, dah da dah dah da dah, aww honey, honey…'” and that was the beginning of that song. Have you ever asked Andy Kim how he felt about not doing that great song himself? He was still a year away from his first big hit with “Baby, I Love You.” I think Andy — and we're close friends — I think he appreciates and knows I was the right voice for that song. That was the right platform, the television show, to deliver the song. He's done well financially from the show and does it in his own show when he performs. I think his songs were more elevated and for a more mature market than ours. We were shooting for teenagers and preteenagers, kids who chewed bubblegum. That's how the term “bubblegum music” came about. The songs were aimed at a very young audience. He's fine with it. The Detergents song did well, but tell me about the years between that song and your time as the voice of the Archies. Hello and welcome to episode 40 of The DJ B-12 Deep Acid House Experience for the month of August 2022. This show contains 61 tracks and has a runtime of 2 hours and 11 minutes. This is a very special set containing many oldskool progressive house and trance tracks from between 1990-1997 that inspired and influenced me and my style. A lot of which you have probably heard on some very famous mixes from back in the day. In addition, there are many obscure tracks and a few new tracks that sound old I added into the mix as well. This set was done with only the purest intensions and love for those DJs and artists who came before me. When producer William Dozier and writer Lorenzo Semple, Jr, met up in Madrid in May 1965, Batman wasn't all they were cooking up; it wasn't even the main reason they were meeting. Semple had been developing an idea called Mr. Zero, a possible action/adventure TV show that had nothing to do with the character who would come to be called “Mr. Freeze.” This time, we take a look at a 40-page presentation document Semple wrote to describe the series. What does it tell us about possible casting, changes in thinking or circumstance (as we note the differences between this description and what we saw in the Mr. Zero test scene script in episode 168), and simply whether this show would have been any good? PLUS: Holy Deja Vu crosses paths with Get Smart, and we read your reaction to our examination of the early script for “Instant Freeze.” Dr. Patrick Murphy teaches how to play Hefti's Batman theme on the violin Rebeat.com mentions Bruce Lee and Number One Son Bruce Lee's screen test for Number One Son

In 1966, William Dozier's Greenway Productions was riding high, seemingly on the verge of building a TV empire built on superheroes: first Batman, then the Green Hornet. Why not keep going in that direction? An entire pilot episode of Dick Tracy was made, starring Ray MacDonnell, and all signs point to Dozier having confidence that the show would be bought by NBC - but it wasn't. Meanwhile, Greenway also made a test film for Wonder Woman, starring Ellie Wood Walker, with a script that would have been more more appropriate for a MAD parody. While Dozier's Wonder Woman experiment was NOT a success, the question lingers: Why wasn't Dick Tracy picked up? We suggest some answers as we discuss both films in this episode. Also, we head down to the Bat Research Lab to try to figure out what Lorenzo Semple Jr.'s Mr. Zero idea was all about; Burt Ward talks about “holys” and ad libs, a dog sings the Batman theme, and we read your mail about our “Mr. Freeze(s)” episode. In the 65th episode of the Life In General Podcast we discuss something we both really love and enjoy, vinyl records. With Record Store Day coming up on April 13th, we run down some of the RSD19 titles we are looking forward to. We also talk about some of the other vinyl releases that are coming out in April, and some of the records we have recently picked up. Since we are also on the topic of vinyl, we also discuss an Austrian company named Rebeat that has created a new way to create vinyl records called HD Vinyl. If you are interested in this new process, you can check out their website at hdvinyl.org, and if you are interested in checking out Nick’s vinyl collection you can find it at discogs.com/user/nickfowler11. James and Emily pay tribute to the passing of Glam Rock icon and innovator David Bowie in this episode. We find out about the fashion, the trends, the culture and society during the Glam Rock era. Plus, we talk to Jen Cunningham from Rebeat magazine about the movie, "Velvet Goldmine." This episode's wine: Cocobon Wines 2013 Red Blend from California This episode's cheese: Havarti Flashback to the early '70s when Glam Rock emerged in the U.K., and we take a look at that small part of music history that still impacts us today. We talk about the trends associated with Glam Rock with the stage personas and theatrics associated with it. And, if you look up T. Rex songs on Google, you may find songs about dinosaurs, but don't be fooled! We find out about Glam Rock's inception with Marc Bolan, followed by David Bowie and more. No Glam Rock conversation would be complete without at least mentioning the outrageous styles in fashion and accessories, and how some styles remained current throughout the '80s, and even show up today. There's even a connection between Glam Rock and Hair Metal we explore. Not to mention how rockers could wear make-up, like Guy-liner and Man-scara, despite how bad-ass these guys are. Emily fawns over Bret Michaels, The Monkees, Ewan McGregor, and, of course, Christian Bale in this episode. Sigh! We even mention the Queen (the British monarch, not the band), watching androgynous teens walking down the street, confused as to whether they're girls or boys. Emily also makes the connection between Glam Rock style and some of the wrestling personas of the '80s. James thanks glam rock for bringing us rock bands with strong front men, who put on incredible shows and act larger than life when they're performing. We also got to talk to Jen from Rebeat digital blog/magazine all about the movie "Velvet Goldmine," which the director calls a "love letter to Glam Rock." Jen and Emily warn British men who are 69 to go get checked out, because we can only take so many deaths of beloved Brits in one year. Want to read more from Rebeat? Check out "Remembering the Life of David Bowie (1947-2016)." We can't have a Glam Rock episode without talking about Bowie. James gives us a quick history of his impact on music, including changing himself and trying new styles of music, and finally becoming a legend. James even compares Bowie to his ultimate hero: Shaq. (We're pretty sure he listens!) Although he's made his very few mistakes, like BowieNet and his poor name choices before settling on David Bowie, he's still one of the greatest musicians in our lifetime, and he continues to influence not only music, but culture and even acceptance. Emily talks about Glam Rock influenced-bands and musicians today, including Kesha and Lady Gaga. James gets to tell us about his cousin's Gary Glitter cover band, Terry Tinsel. And we spend maybe a little too long looking at pictures of Gary Glitter on Google, trying to understand the star quality of his "dystopian Elvis" look. James realizes there's no redeeming Gary Glitter, no matter how hard he tries. Featured promos: The Highly Recommended Show The Nickscast Special thanks to Adam Centamore for his book, "Tasting Wine & Cheese: An Insider's Guide to Mastering the Principles of Pairing," which inspires us to try new wine and cheese pairings in every episode!
