How a prize-winning project brought saiga antelope back from the brink

Two decades ago a group of NGOs came together with the government of Kazakhstan to save the dwindling population of saiga antelope living in the enormous Golden Steppe. Since then, the Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative has successfully rehabilitated the saiga (Saiga tatarica) from a population of roughly 30,000 to nearly 4 million. For this effort, it was awarded the 2024 Earthshot Prize in the “protect & restore nature” category. Joining the podcast to discuss this achievement is Vera Voronova, executive director of the Association for the Conservation Biodiversity of Kazakhstan, an NGO involved in the initiative. Voronova details the cultural and technological methods used to bring the saiga back from the brink and to help restore this massive grassland ecosystem. “When [the] initiative [was] started, the saiga would be always like the flagship and the priority species because we did have this emergency case to recover saiga,” she says. “But the whole … picture of restoring the [steppe] was always behind this, and will be now a long term strategy.” Subscribe to or follow the Mongabay Newscast wherever you listen to podcasts, from Apple to Spotify, and you can also listen to all episodes here on the Mongabay website. As Ice Age Britain thawed, temperatures surged, sea levels rose, and humans and animals faced a fight for survival. But this shift was anything but simple. In this final episode of our Ice Age miniseries, Tristan Hughes is joined by Professor Danielle Schreve to uncover the turbulent end of the last Ice Age in Britain. Discover how mammals like Siberian lemmings and Saiga antelope roamed this icy landscape, how the Younger Dryas cold snap 13,000 years ago reshaped Britain's prehistoric environment, and how early humans adapted to survive it. With echoes for today's climate challenges, this is a story of resilience on the fringes of the Ice Age world.Presented by Tristan Hughes. Join us on a trip to the Mongolian steppe! You don't need to be a mammal lover to find these creatures fascinating. Saiga antelopes have been around and unchanged since the last ice age when they roamed the Mongolian plains with woolly mammoths. But the saigas haven't had an easy run for the past years. In 2016/2017 a massive disease outbreak that had spilled over from domestic livestock caused them to die by the tens of thousands. This episode's guest, Dr. Enkhtuvshin Shiilegdamba, called Enkee, led the investigations and shares her experience. Enkee has had an impressive career in epidemiology and One Health that brought her to the US to study and research at UC Davis and back to her home country, Mongolia. After many years with the Wildlife Conservation Society, Enkee currently works as a transboundary animal disease specialist consultant for the Worldbank and the FAO. We are taking a speed tour through her career journey and wonderful and challenging experiences she had on the way. Joining Lefty this episode to talk about gas operated short stroke shotguns is Mike Whitesides and Lan Nguyen with Dissident Arms and Andrew with Century Arms. The first known AK style shotgun to be made was the Saiga-12 (based off the AK-47/AKM). Production started in 1997 by the Izhmash factory in Russia and then ,6 years later, by the Molot factory with their VEPR-12 shotgun (based of the RPK light machine gun). Relatively speaking, the AK Shotgun is a new firearm and the future is bright. Having a gas operated short stroke action gives the AK shogun advantages over your traditional inertia driven shotguns like the Benelli M4 . Less recoil and faster loading times are a couple that are discussed. However because Lan and Mike have such an deep grasp of these type of shotguns by converting and modifying hundreds of Saiga and Vepr-12 shotguns over the years they give us a unique and detailed breakdown on AK shotguns. The Saiga antelope is a fascinating - albeit tragic- example for Global Governance failure and Western Research Publication Arrogance. While widely distributed in the Asian steppe for millennia, as publicized by George Schaller for the wilderness of Central Asia and Tibetean Plateau region, the Saiga antelope is now critically endangered and went through ~90% population crashes in just the last 20 years or so. Based on the citation below here I briefly review and comment on some of the science done, its actors and players for conservation progress and betterment. Kimika Yoshino returns in this prequel to 'Wizard of Darkness' to play Misa Kuroi before she was famous, or at least before she realized she was a witch. 'Birth of the Wizard' begins in Meiji-era Japan, in a village of former witches and wizards. I say former, because someone seems to have slaughtered them. Skip to the present day, and an archaeologist discovers a mummy from the village. Blissfully unaware that the mummy is, in fact, possessed by an evil spirit (naturally), he runs off, leaving his assistant alone. The mummy comes to life, kills her, and the evil spirit takes over her body. This evil spirit is now searching for Misa, who is protected by a survivor from the original massacre, known only as Saiga It is Misa's destiny to defeat this evil spirit, but she needs Saiga's help to do it.

This week we’re joined by Joel Berger, a professor at Colorado State University and a senior scientist with the New York-based Wildlife Conservation Society, who recently wrote a commentary for Mongabay arguing that there are too many large mammals like yaks and Saiga antelope living in remote regions (so-called “edge species”) that are wrongfully overlooked by conservation initiatives. Then from Peru, Dr. Andrew Whitworth, a conservation and biodiversity scientist with the University of Glasgow, shares rare recordings he recently made in the field of a critically endangered bird called the Sira Curassow.

The New Horizons spacecraft is one month away from Pluto, but it's already giving us some fuzzy photos. And new findings from the Hubble telescope give some insights into the complex orbits and interactions of Pluto's moons. In the last month around 120,000 Saiga antelopes have died in Kazakhstan, and nobody knows why. Breaking news while we recorded this show - the Philae lander has awoken on Comet 67P after a seven month sleep. The first stage of The Planetary Society's LightSail project has been successfully completed. The small craft unfurled its large solar sail, which uses sunlight for propulsion.
