Skittish stock markets struggled to maintain the positive momentum of the previous week and, following a barrage of bad news, it's beginning to look like the previous week may have been the aberration. The week started with an outsized jump in Eurozone inflation in May, to 8.1%, and the fact that the announcement of this data coincided with the announcement of the European Union's embargo on Russian oil was not helpful. It also didn't help that a bunch of American corporate chieftains ambushed markets with dire warnings about the state of the economy. Among them was the much-respected Chief Executive of JP Morgan Chase & Co, who warned of an impending economic "hurricane". Fears of stagflation intensified, stock markets struggled for a couple of days and investors fled to the safe haven of the US Dollar.Stocks featured:Didi Global, HP, JP Morgan Chase & Co, Salesforce, Target, Tesla, Twitter and WalmartTo find out more about the investment management services offered by Walker Crips, please visit our website:https://www.walkercrips.co.uk/This podcast is intended to be Walker Crips Investment Management's own commentary on markets. Revisiting China's Great Wall of Steel - with Matt Pottinger

Post Corona

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 28, 2021 62:30

This week we are re-posting some of our episodes from 2021 that are most relevant right now. We'll start with Matt Pottinger on recent developments in China. China's borders have been sealed for almost two years. And those borders will be closed for the foreseeable future. That, obviously, is a result of the pandemic; but, is there a larger grand strategy at play? For decades now, China's coupling with western economies has been the dominant theme of the global economic landscape - beginning with China's 2001 accession to the World Trade Organization. But that's been changing. Fast forward to a speech by President Xi Jinping to mark the hundred year anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party. He spoke before a massive crowd in Tiananmen Square: "The Chinese people", Xi said “will never allow any foreign force to bully, oppress, or enslave us. Anyone who tries to do so shall be battered and bloodied colliding with a great wall of steel forged by more than 1.4 billion Chinese people using flesh and blood.” Last summer, Chinese regulators announced an investigation into DiDi Global, a ride-hailing company, right after its IPO. DiDi had raised $4.4 billion in the biggest Chinese IPO in the U.S. since Alibaba's in 2014. There have been similar moves against other Chinese companies listed in the US. Where will this go? Consider this: There are approximately 244 U.S. listed Chinese firms with a total market capitalization of around $1.8 trillion. Are we witnessing the decoupling of the US and China economies? Markets were pulled from pillar to post as the forces of Covid and inflation gave battle to investor enthusiasm for buying the dips. Federal Reserve Chairman Powell tempted fate early in the week by announcing an acceleration in the Fed's plan to wind down its $120 billion-a-month asset purchases, when investors were expecting his tone to have softened in the face of the Omicron variant. In the space of a few weeks the Fed has gone from dismissing inflation as being "transitory" to inflation being its main concern. Powell even refused to admit that an Omicron-induced lockdown would reduce inflationary pressures, saying that it merely "increased uncertainty for inflation". As a result, investors now face a hitherto unanticipated scenario where new lockdowns depress growth but, unlike over the past fifteen years, monetary policy actually becomes more rigid.Stocks featured:AstraZeneca, Didi Global, Hermes International, Moderna, Pfizer and Universal Music GroupTo find out more about the investment management services offered by Walker Crips, please visit our website:https://www.walkercrips.co.uk/This podcast is intended to be Walker Crips Investment Management's own commentary on markets. Just five months after going public on the New York Stock Exchange, Chinese ride-hailing giant Didi Global said it plans to delist from the New York Stock Exchange and pursue a Hong Kong listing as it bends to Chinese regulators angered by its US IPO.“Following careful research, the company will immediately start delisting on the New York stock exchange and start preparations for listing in Hong Kong,” Didi said on its Twitter-like Weibo account on Friday.Didi did not explain its reasons for the plan but said in a separate statement it would organize a shareholder vote at an appropriate time and ensure its New York-listed stock would be convertible into “freely tradable shares” on another internationally recognized stock exchange.$DIDIPatrick's Books:Statistics For The Trading Floor:  https://amzn.to/3eerLA0Derivatives For The Trading Floor:  https://amzn.to/3cjsyPFCorporate Finance:  https://amzn.to/3fn3rvC Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/PatrickBoyleOnFinanceVisit our website: www.onfinance.orgFollow Patrick on Twitter Here: https://twitter.com/PatrickEBoylePatrick Boyle On YouTube Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/PatrickBoyleOnFinance)

China's borders have been sealed for well over a year now. Anyone who tries to do so shall be battered and bloodied colliding with a great wall of steel forged by more than 1.4 billion Chinese people using flesh and blood.” On July 2, Chinese regulators announced an investigation into DiDi Global, a ride-hailing company, right after its IPO. Are we witnessing the decoupling of the US and China economies? Is this the one issue on which there seems to be a bipartisan consensus in the US? The Didi Global IPO feels like a fiasco - company goes public one week, gets booted from the app store by Chinese regulators the next. With RLX Technology undergoing a similar crackdown earlier this year, and with Ant Financial still being kept off the market, and with concerns around Jack Ma's well-being in light of his criticism of the government, it's not a huge surprise most big-name Chinese stocks on the U.S. markets are trading poorly. A lot of questions arise, but the most basic one - can you invest in these stocks? In this week's episode we talk about Didi and what the various parties' motivation might be, what might make the picture clearer, and whether you can really invest in Alibaba, as well as whether that matters. Topics Covered 3:15 minute mark – What to make of the Didi crackdown 8:30 – Are China ADRs investible? 14:15 – What does an ADR actually get you? 22:15 – Considering the Chinese government's calculus 25:15 – The difficulty of establishing an edge in these names 33:15 – Norms and flows, betting vs investing 39:15 – How much the right price can matter 47:15 – Revisiting the “Amazon of China” idea 52:45 – The Sina example 57:15 – U.S. Sino accords and balances of power 1:06:15 – Investing in China-based companies

W czwartek prezydent Stanów Zjednoczonych poinformował, że ostatni amerykańscy żołnierze opuszczą Afganistan do 31 sierpnia, a więc przed wyznaczonym początkowo terminem 11 września. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/radiownet/message
