October is all about scares though, so this week we decided to wade back into those holy and turbulent waters, and what better way to do that then in another installment of our Based on a true story series! This episode we will be telling you the true stories behind two of the scariest films ever made, both of which are about a possession.  Leslie brings us the true story behind the Netflix horror film, Veronica. Veronica was loosely based on "The Vallecas Case", which refers to the town in Spain where it occurred, but the story is that of a young woman named Estefania Gutierrez.  Estefania's terrifying behavior and unexplained sudden death left not only her family, but also Spanish authorities wondering if this otherwise healthy young woman could have simply passed away out of nowhere, or if perhaps, there were darker forces at hand.    Holly will be digging into the true story behind the iconic horror film, one that many people refer to as the scariest movie of all time, The Exorcist. For years it was relatively common knowledge that Regan MacNeil was based on a young boy referred to as Roland Doe who lived in Maryland and underwent a dramatic exorcism in the late 1940's. In this special spooky episode, Ellie and Carrie discuss the cultural logic of hauntings in both American history and their own lives. They grapple with childhood notions of their late father's ghost, something Carrie feared and Ellie denied. Understanding hauntings as living loss, they bring in the work of historian Tiya Miles, whose book Tales from the Haunted South offers ghost stories as potentially radical works of historiography that often deal with narratives left out of the official record. But such narratives are also taken less seriously because they are ghost stories. For Miles, the Native American ghost and the enslaved ghost play twin roles interrogating trauma in the American gothic. Ellie offers a brief history and social explanation of the Salem witch trials, undergirded by patriarchal prescriptions and the anxieties of Puritan predestination. Meanwhile, how have misogynistic conceptions of women as vessels prone to hysteria colored female possession narratives from Dido to Bertha Mason to Regan MacNeil (a.k.a. the Exorcist girl, who's chained to a bed while the Devil makes her say "Fuck me! Fuck me!")? During the Victorian era, women spiritualists used such stereotypes to their advantage, finding their own voices while speaking for the undead. Other topics include the role of inherited trauma in the most powerful horror stories (see the Graham family in Ari Aster's Hereditary), queerness and ghosts (see Dani in The Haunting of Bly Manner), and the relationship between 19th-century spiritualism and technology, especially when it came to the new medium of photography. In addition to Miles, books referenced are Judith Richardson's Possessions: The History and Uses of Haunting in the Hudson Valley, Renée L. Bergland's The National Uncanny, Sacvan Bercovitch's The American Jeremiad, and, of course, Susan Sontag's On Photography and Regarding the Pain of Others. You wanna hear a really creepy ghost story?  Well…actually…a really creepy satanic possession story…or something? Try this on for size: Guy gets really good at his job.  So good that he’s given a cameo doing his job in one of the biggest horror movies of the century.  A movie whose set became legendary for weird accidents, injuries, fires – even deaths! – during its making…and a few years later, same guy gets arrested for knocking his gay hook-up over the head with a frying pan and then stabbing him to death…and to top it off, same guy seems to be pretty much the person who killed at least six other unidentified men, dismembering them, then packing them into garbage bags that get thrown into the Hudson River. Not very believable.  Except that it’s a true story. It’s the story of Paul Bateson, the alcoholic radiological technologist whose delicate, caring manner in performing the cerebral angiography procedure on children at New York University Medical Center caught the eye of film director William Friedkin, who cast Bateson as the technologist performing the procedure on the character of young Regan MacNeil, the possessed girl at the center of Friedkin’s film adaptation of William Peter Blatty’s “The Exorcist.” Seems like quite the feather in Mr. Bateson’s cap – something to build a highly successful career on.  Right? Unfortunately, no. Troubled from youth and battling alcoholism his entire life, Bateson fell deeply into his addiction in the years following the release of the movie, and ended up losing is job at NYUMC. Now working odd jobs and trying to find a way to get back to working in radiology, Bateson fell off the wagon again in 1977 and, in one weird, wild night, he met, hung out with, drank with, went home with, and then murdered renowned Variety film journalist Addison Verrill in Verrill’s New York City Apartment. The circumstances around Bateson’s capture and arrest are fascinating, and Melissa recounts the twists and turns in that case – including Bateson’s release on Parole and his subsequent fade-away into obscurity, where even though someone using his name and Social Security Number was certified as deceased in 2018, it can’t be proven to be the same person.  Weird.  But wait, there’s more – a lot more.  You see, it turns out that during the 1970s prior to Bateson’s arrest, there had been a string of murders of young men in New York – six altogether – each of whom had been murdered and mutilated, their cut-up bodies placed in garbage bags and tossed into the Hudson River.  To this day, tragically, not even one of these men has been identified by anyone.  And no one has ever been arrested in their murders.  But even more compelling is the fact that all of the garbage bags all six of those young men’s bodies were found in bore the mark of the place they came from:  New York University Medical Center.  Follow Melissa into this dark hole of mystery, creepy movie sets – and even a side trip into Melissa’s and Producer Mark’s own personal adventures into telekinesis! – on this most fascinating episode.  Remember, if you have a tip of any kind that can help solve a crime or any mystery whatsoever,  you can call Melissa on the TIP-STER HOTLINE at (832) TIP-STER (832-847-7837) or send an email to jttipsters@gmail.com.

El año 1973 fue un año trágico para el mundo del arte, las letras y el cine. Ese año nos dejaron, entre otros: Pablo Picasso, Nino Bravo, John Ford, J. R. R. Tolkien, Bruce Lee... Pero ese año no todo fueron malas noticias. Los amantes del cine de terror estaban de enhorabuena. Justo un día después de celebrar la Navidad, el 26 de diciembre, se estrenaba en Estados Unidos una película que cambiaría el cine de terror, tal y como lo conocíamos hasta ese momento. Durante los 121 minutos con 56 segundos que duró su proyección, hubo mareos, vómitos, desmayos e, incluso, espectadores que no pudieron soportarlo y abandonaron la sala. En ella se relata la posesión diabólica de una niña de doce años, Regan MacNeil, y su posterior exorcismo. Basada en un caso real ocurrido en 1949 a un joven de 14 años, su exorcismo duró tres meses. Años después, este mismo chico, totalmente curado, acabaría trabajando en la NASA. La película tardó dos años en llegar a España y no fue hasta el 1 septiembre de 1975 cuando el demonio Pazuzu llegó a los cines españoles. Fue la primera película de terror de la historia en ser nominada a mejor película. Obtuvo un total de diez nominaciones para los Premios Oscar, incluyendo Mejor Película, de los cuales consiguió solamente dos, al mejor guión adaptado y mejor sonido. En 1982, Chicho Ibañez Serrador quiso emitir en Mis Terrores Favoritos la película de terror más famosa de todos los tiempos, pero no fue posible. Y tuvieron que pasar 7 años para su estreno en TVE, el día 7 de octubre de 1989, en Sábado Cine. 27 Años después, se estrenó una nueva versión, el montaje del director, a la que añadieron 11 minutos. La película tardó dos años en llegar a España y no fue hasta el 1 septiembre de 1975 cuando el demonio Pazuzu llegó a los cines españoles. Fue la primera película de terror de la historia en ser nominada a mejor película. Obtuvo un total de diez nominaciones para los Premios Oscar, incluyendo Mejor Película, de los cuales consiguió solamente dos, al mejor guión adaptado y mejor sonido. En 1982, Chicho Ibañez Serrador quiso emitir en Mis Terrores Favoritos la película de terror más famosa de todos los tiempos, pero no fue posible. Y tuvieron que pasar 7 años para su estreno en TVE, el día 7 de octubre de 1989, en Sábado Cine. 27 Años después, se estrenó una nueva versión, el montaje del director, a la que añadieron 11 minutos. In this week’s show we review the Fox TV Series “The Exorcist” which just completed it’s first season and is now available on Hulu. Based on the hit 1973 film by the same name (from a novel by William Peter Blatty), the show follows Father Tomas Ortega and Father Marcus Keane both exorcists from the Roman Catholic Church. The main victim of possession is Casey Rance daughter of Angela Rance played Geena Davis who is actually Regan MacNeil from the original story. The show expands “The Exorcist” universe to include other plot twists such as a plan to assassinate the Pope by a secret society made up of church leaders, a group of demons who are trying to take over Chicago by stealing organs from residents of poor neighborhoods and a group of rebel nuns that perform exorcism outside of official approval. The Salesman / Captain Howdy or Pazuzu, is depicted as an elderly gentleman who appears to Regan while playing with a Ouija board. Our guest Joe Balog, offers his perspective on the show and discusses the rite of possession including the litany of the Virgin Mary which is mentioned on the show and is not usually used for demonic possession.
