This episode was recorded at the 2025 Western Dairy Management Conference in Reno, Nevada.Dr. Kononoff begins with some renewable fuels history. Since the renewable fuels standard in 2007, corn production for ethanol has increased to around 50% of the crop going to ethanol production. With the subsequent increase in fuel has come an increase in distillers grains and the industry has learned how to use them to feed cattle better. Later, the government created additional policy for next-stage renewable fuels, which has spurred biodiesel production. Currently, just under 50% of the soybean crop goes to fuel production. Soybean meal availability has increased and costs have decreased over the past few years. Most of the soybean oil is solvent-extracted. (5:57)Dr. Lock talks about increased acres of high-oleic soybeans in dairy-soybean crossover states. He summarizes some of the work his group has done on feeding high-oleic roasted whole soybeans as a replacement for soybean meal in the diet, citing the benefits of the oil in the diet as well as increased bypass protein. (15:41)The panel discusses whether canola meal, which is fairly high in oleic acid, would show similar benefits to feeding whole roasted soybeans. They also talk about how tariffs may or may not impact canola meal and canola oil prices. (24:26)Over time, the dairy industry has moved away from alfalfa as a protein source and toward soybean meal. The panel discusses the pros and cons of this change. (26:46)Dr. Kononoff gives his perspective on just how much soybean meal can be fed in dairy cow diets. Nitrogen excretion is an important consideration. He reminds the audience that renewable fuels policy is the reason behind many of the feed ingredient changes we've observed in the past 15-20 years, and that policy can change very rapidly. He emphasizes the industry needs to remain nimble and prepared to adapt. The panel also touches on pricing of feed ingredients in different parts of the country and how distillers grains are currently used in dairy diets. (31:08)Panelists share their take-home thoughts. This week's episode covers new steel and aluminum tariffs, trade developments, and an inside look at the clean fuels sector. In the news: U.S. and India trade talks may boost ag exports, the USDA leads a trade mission to Peru and Iowa signs an $800 million grain deal with Vietnam. We also cover rising steel and aluminum prices from new tariffs, biodiesel market uncertainty, and a new mentorship program for young corn farmers. Trade and tariffs were front and center in a conversation with David Salmonsen, senior director of governmental relations at the American Farm Bureau Federation. Ag News Daily reporter and producer Michelle Stangler joined a media tour hosted by Clean Fuels Alliance America, where she explored the biodiesel market. With more soybean growers investing in biodiesel, the industry is watching closely for EPA updates on the Renewable Fuel Standard. Michelle gained insights from industry consultant, Pete Probst of Indigenous Energy. Emily Skor, CEO of Growth Energy, joins Jim Lenz, Director of Education and Training at GEAPS, to share a powerful vision for expanding ethanol markets through permanent E15 access — and the tremendous impact it would have on the grain industry. The recent EPA summer waiver for E15 marks a significant victory, but Emily explains why congressional action is essential to make year-round E15 sales permanent. Full E15 adoption could drive demand for 2 billion more bushels of corn annually and strengthen America's rural economy. Key Takeaways:Growth Energy's Reach Represents biofuel producers and the ethanol value chain across 16 states, purchasing 20% of U.S. corn annually.E15 Brings Real Benefits This 15% ethanol blend saves drivers 10–30 cents per gallon and more and offers improved engine performance.Economic Powerhouse Full E15 adoption could create 188,000 new U.S. jobs and deliver an enduring boost to rural economies.All-American Industry Ethanol is produced entirely on U.S. soil and employs more military veterans than any other energy sector.Policy Urgency Temporary summer waivers create market uncertainty. Only Congress can secure permanent, year-round E15 access. Send me a messageIn this episode of the Climate Confident podcast, I speak with Alexei Beltyukov, co-founder of Universal Fuel Technologies, about a new approach to producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), using a process they call flexiforming.Unlike traditional methods like HEFA or Fischer–Tropsch, flexiforming allows producers to use a much wider range of feedstocks, from mixed alcohols to naphtas and renewable waste streams, and turn them into jet fuel, renewable diesel, or chemicals. This flexibility is critical as SAF demand surges, especially with EU mandates requiring a rising share of SAF in jet fuel starting in 2025.We explore:Why SAF is the only viable decarbonisation path for long-haul aviation (for now)What sets flexiforming apart from conventional SAF productionHow current SAF mandates and incentives (EU vs. US) shape supply and pricingWhy scaling SAF requires compatibility with existing refinery infrastructureThe role consumer awareness might play in driving airline demandAlexei also makes the case for slow but steady growth in SAF adoption, pointing to its current double-digit annual growth and comparing its trajectory to that of electric vehicles 10 years ago.If you're working in energy, fuels, aviation, or sustainability policy, or you're just trying to understand how we decarbonise one of the hardest-to-abate sectors, this episode offers a clear, grounded perspective.

Sustainable aviation fuel can use a variety of feedstocks, from used cooking oils to oily seeds. When those feedstocks are heated under high pressure with a catalyst, the process produces hydrocarbons - the essential component in fuel. This process is called HEFA, Hydro-processed Esters and Fatty Acids. One company using this process to produce sustainable aviation fuel is Montana Renewables, based out of Great Falls, Montana, where they reconfigured equipment previously used in petroleum refining. In part two of four, we'll be sitting down with Bruce Fleming, who serves as Executive Vice President of Calumet Specialty Products Partners and CEO of Calumet subsidiary Montana Renewables. Bruce will take us behind the scenes of the biofuel industry, discussing Montana Renewable's approach to feedstocks, infrastructure, and and other challenges to scaling SAF.Follow us on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram.Contact us at contact@climatenow.comVisit our website for all of our content and sources for each episode.

Dr. Ameya Joshi currently serves as the Vice President of Product at ClearFlame Engines. He also maintains his own website, MobilityNotes.com, which disseminates the latest information on transport decarbonization and has a wide reach across the industry. Takeaways Decarbonizing the existing fleet is crucial as most vehicles on the road are not new vehicles. Understanding the intersection of regulations and technologies is key to navigating the complexity of the industry. Accounting for the entire lifecycle of vehicles, including production and disposal, is necessary for effective decarbonization. Incentivizing the use of renewable fuels requires policy changes and the development of carbon markets. Transitioning to a smaller organization can provide opportunities for learning and growth, but also comes with its own challenges. Leverage previous experience and knowledge when starting a new venture. Building a sustainable business requires a focus on value proposition, product definition, and product management. Technology needs to be effectively marketed and turned into a viable product to make a difference. The book 'Know What Matters' by Ron Sheik provides valuable insights into building a successful company. Chapters: Introduction and Background The Importance of Decarbonizing the Existing Fleet The State of the Industry and Challenges in Decarbonization Navigating the Complexity of the Industry The Role of Mobility Notes and Discernment in the Industry Challenges and Solutions for Incorporating Renewable Fuels Transitioning to a Smaller Organization and Finding Success Learning and Applying Previous Experience Building a Sustainable Business Taking Technology to the Market Book Recommendation: Know What Matters Links: Show notes: http://brandonbartneck.com/futureofmobility/ameyajoshi2 ClearFlame Engine Technologies: Reduce Heavy-Duty Emissions www.mobilitynotes.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/joshiav/ Bio: Dr. Ameya Joshi currently serves as the Vice President of Product at ClearFlame Engines.
