It's hard to believe, but it's already time to say goodbye to 2024 and ring in a new year. Before we do, however, we'd like to take the next half an hour to review some of our favourite interviews of this year. It's become a tradition at rabble radio, after all! Let's dive right in. 2024 at a glance… In January, then-Jack Layton Journalism for Change fellow Madison Edward-Wright sat down with associate professor at Concordia University Ted Rutland to talk about his research work on anti-Black racism and policing in Canada – and specifically, in Montreal. In this clip, Rutland will take us through a brief history of policing in Quebec and give us a temperature check of the situation today. At the end of her term as Jack Layton Journalism for Change fellow in 2023, Kiah Lucero covered the Kearl mine tailings leak, and how the Alberta Energy Regulator and Imperial Oil both failed to report those leaks for a disastrous nine-month period. Brandi Morin, an award-winning Cree/Iroquois/French journalist, released Killer Water, a documentary which shines a light on the environmental impacts of Alberta's oil sands industry. Morin shares with Lucero the grave ways the community of Fort Chipewyan has been impacted by the Kearl mine tailings spill. May is Asian Heritage Month in Canada, and this year we were very excited to share with our listeners a two-part discussion on the history of Asian labour in Canada. Kiah Lucero sat down with Patricia Chong and Karine Ng from the Ontario and BC branches of the Asian Canadian Labour Alliance. In this clip, we'll hear them dive into the concept of a “model minority” and how all racial justice fights are intertwined. This year, a major win for the pro-choice movement – and indeed a win for women's health across Canada – came in the form of an announcement by the Liberal federal government that crisis pregnancy centers and charities must now clearly reveal to their clients whether they offer abortion or abortion referrals. This new policy will prevent anti-choice pregnancy crisis centers from misleading women to try to deter them from having an abortion. In the months leading up to this policy being announced, Joyce Arthur, the founder and executive director of the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada, joined rabble editor Nick Seebruch to talk about belief-based denial of care and the state of abortion rights in Canada. And finally, listeners, the last clip we wanted to highlight today came from a conversation between Nick Seebruch and Louise Smith from Independent Jewish Voices Canada. Solidarity with Palestine was a huge topic of conversation this year on the podcast and on rabble.ca, and in this interview Smith and Seebruch outline the important work Independent Jewish Voices Canada does to advocate for peace and justice in Israel-Palestine and explain how all forms of oppression are connected. In this clip, Smith aims to dispel the myth that solidarity with Palestine equals antisemitism and criticizes the Jewish groups in Canada which tout that sentiment. CVW CleanTech CEO Akshay Dubey discussed the company's innovative technology aimed at reprocessing tailings from oil sands mining with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion. Dubey explained that the process recovers valuable hydrocarbons, zircon, and titanium from waste, significantly reducing fugitive methane emissions by over 90% and aiding in environmental remediation. CVW CleanTech targets Alberta's oil sands mining sector, particularly six major sites operated by Imperial Oil, Canadian Natural Resources, and Suncor, which collectively produce about 1.5 million barrels of oil daily. Dubey highlighted CVW CleanTech's contribution to meeting environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals, aiding oil companies in achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The technology also addresses the sustainability of tailings ponds, the largest source of fugitive methane emissions in Canada. The company has formed a partnership with local indigenous communities, providing them with investment opportunities and ownership stakes, fostering social and economic benefits. Additionally, a collaboration with the University of Alberta aims to develop processes for recovering rare earth elements, such as monazite, further enhancing the company's environmental impact. Dubey expressed optimism about the future deployment of their technology and the positive reception from stakeholders. #CVWCleanTech, #OilSands, #CleanTechnology, #EnvironmentalInnovation, #ESG, #Sustainability, #MethaneReduction, #TailingsReprocessing, #HydrocarbonRecovery, #MineralRecovery, #IndigenousPartnerships, #UniversityOfAlberta, #RareEarthElements, #AlbertaOil, #NetZero2050, #GreenTech, #EnvironmentalImpact, #Zircon, #Titanium, #Canada #proactiveinvestors #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

In this episode, Jay sits down with Mr. Michael Bathgate and Mr. Taylor Hewlett, both esteemed Operations Supervisors at Imperial, to discuss their compelling presentation, "People Don't Suck: Looking at HOP Through a Leadership Lens." Michael Bathgate, a Mine Operations Supervisor at Imperial Oil, has a deep passion for leadership, constantly fueled by reading and applying insights from renowned authors like Simon Sinek and Adam Grant. With a career starting in the construction and mining industry right out of high school, Michael has spent the last 10 years at Imperial's Kearl lake site, with seven of those years in a supervisory role. Outside of work, Michael enjoys fishing and exploring the Gulf Islands with his son Ivor and partner Erin. Taylor Hewlett, also an Operations Supervisor at Imperial, brings a unique perspective from his five years as an Aircraft Technician in the military before transitioning to the oil sands industry. With 15 years in the oil sands and 12 years in a supervisory role, Taylor is inspired by leadership concepts from John Maxwell. He is dedicated to working with people and has been committed to leadership development since his early twenties. Taylor is a father of five and has been married to his wife Natalie for 15 years. In their joint presentation, "People Don't Suck," Michael and Taylor connect Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) with leadership through captivating storytelling. They challenge the notion that people are the problem, presenting them instead as the solution. By leveraging HOP principles, they reveal how leaders can unlock their team's full potential, transform problem-solving approaches, and positively impact organizational culture, safety, and productivity. Join us as Michael and Taylor share their experiences and insights on integrating HOP with effective leadership. This episode is packed with practical strategies and inspiring stories that demonstrate how viewing people as the solution can revolutionize your organization. Chief Allan Adam joins the show to break down the recent town hall with Imperial Oil. What was discussed, what are the next steps, and his message to the public and decision makers.
The co-leader of Canada's Green Party is calling a tailings pond leak in northern Alberta an act of "environmental racism.” Elizabeth May is referring to the nine-month leak at the Imperial Oil Kearl Lake site that only recently became public. That's on Nation to Nation.
Minister Guilbeault raised the fact that Environment and Climate Change Canada enforcement officers have issued a Fisheries Act Direction to Imperial Oil that requires immediate action to contain the seep and prevent it from entering a fish-bearing waterbody. Enforcement officers will continue to attend the site, monitor cleanup, and collect more inspection information to determine Fisheries Act compliance. Minister Guilbeault underlined that Imperial Oil's own stated failures of communication were unacceptable and have raised broader concerns regarding the efficacy of existing notification systems through Alberta (EDGE). Environment and Climate Change Canada will be closely engaged with the Alberta Energy Regulator to review Imperial Oil's remedial action plan to ensure it complies with the Fisheries Act.“Minister Guilbeault also introduced the idea of a joint federal-provincial-Indigenous working group, with participation from the oil companies, to address the immediate concerns around the Kearl Oil Sands Mine situation to restore trust and give transparency to all parties involved. This would include meeting on a regular basis to discuss remediation and containment plans, and improvements to the notification systems for ongoing incidents of spill or seepage. Details on the make-up and objectives of this working group will be developed soon.”
Environmental Defence's Allie Rougeot gives us a comprehensive picture of Imperial Oil's wastewater spill. Stefan also interviews policy researcher Hadrian Mertins-Kirkwood about Canada's Sustainable Jobs Plan.
Do we do enough to hold corporations, organizations, and politicians accountable when they behave badly? From toxic leaks to greasy politics, today's episode investigates some of the top stories in the country, and what Canadians are doing about them. 4:09 | Chief Allan Adam didn't mince words on the March 6 episode of Real Talk. Since the Kearl mine in northern Alberta began production on Treaty 8 territory in 2013, the company has touted technological innovations that they say “enhance environmental performance.” Yet for months, wastewater from the mine's tailings ponds, containing arsenic, hydrocarbons and sulphides has been seeping into the land. The company that runs the mine, Imperial Oil, first reported the leak in May 2022 to the provincial regulator. But Chief Allan Adam of the nearby Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation says his community only learned of the seepage last month. That's created anxiety, says Chief Adam, because people have been hunting, fishing and trapping without knowing there was a risk of contamination. Drew Anderson, the Narwhal's Prairies reporter, joins us today to walk us through how the leak happened, Alberta's tailings pond debate and who's accountable. For transcripts of this series, please visit: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/frontburner/transcripts
The ground and water near Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation in northern Alberta has become a toxic mess. A nearby oil sands site, run by Imperial Oil, has leaked industrial waste into the hunting and fishing grounds of the Indigenous community. But the First Nation alleges Imperial Oil and the provincial regulators tasked with keeping the companies in line, hid the seriousness of the leak. Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation is only now learning of how badly their food and water could be contaminated. Energy reporter Emma Graney talks about who knew what when and how this major oil leak is destroying any trust between the public, regulators and oil sands companies.Questions? Comments? Ideas? E-mail us at thedecibel@globeandmail.com
It's easy to understand why members of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation are "dismayed" to discover millions of litres of toxic oilsands tailings leaking into land and water where they harvest food. Chief Allan Adam has ordered his community to destroy any food (including game) collected since May. It's the latest chapter in an ongoing battle between industry and nearby Indigenous communities who've seen disproportionate cancer rates over many years. Chief Adam tells us what his community expects from the provincial government, the Alberta Energy Regulator, and Imperial Oil. But first... 3:20 | Alberta and Ottawa have a new $24B health funding deal. Associate Finance Minister Randy Boissonnault brings the federal perspective on how the deal will impact healthcare delivery, and what changes re: accountability on how the money's spent. 14:18 | Chief Allan Adam says there's "no trust" between the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation and the Alberta Energy Regulator. Just a few days ago, the public learned a nine-month toxic leak from Imperial Oil's Kearl oilsands site had polluted muskeg and forest as well as a small lake and tributaries of the Firebag and Muskeg rivers. Chief Adam tells us how his community is responding, and what needs to happen now. 38:15 | It's time to treat Alberta's most vulnerable citizens with dignity. That, from lawyer Andrew Green, who's advocated for hundreds of AISH recipients through his role with the Edmonton Community Legal Centre. He explains why the income support program is in desperate need of an overhaul, addresses the notion it's rife with fraud, and lays out what he's hoping to hear from political parties ahead of the May election. Have a safe week everyone!About JackieJacquelyn started her career in Sustainability, Social Impact, and DE&I over 14 years ago, after gaining a degree from the University of Toronto in Environmental Resource Management, a degree Jacquelyn chose to explore after studying the environmental aspect of International Relations.Inspired by her surroundings – living by the old Imperial Oil office building in Toronto – Jacquelyn was driven to make an impact in an industry that arguably needed it most, and began managing large-scale oil projects. This path could have been deemed ‘untraditional' for someone in Environmental Studies where many would opt for non-profit, for Kankam the company was right, the impact would be greater. Starting out as a project coordinator, working alongside teams detailing the optimum environmental impact of various oil sands projects, named Environmental Impact assessments, she set out to make the meaningful change the industry so desperately needed.Driven for not only a curiosity of the environment but a yearning to do better for a lasting planet, Kankam set her sights on real estate, addressing ecological and social issues, whilst building future-proofing strategies in commercial and residential builds. As Jacquelyn continued to set out on a mission to do better within many industries she changed focus to aviation joining Air Canada, to manage environmental sustainability. Here Jacquelyn looked into ways to engage customers and industry on aviation's sustainable journey while focusing on many topics including plastic and reporting.Growing a team of emerging professionals and mentoring the younger generation on preserving our future, Jackie saw a huge opportunity to create a powerful and good impact within an industry ready to overhaul preconceptions of its sustainability practices. That brings us to today, where Jackie holds the position of Director, Sustainability and Social Impact at DECIEM. Jackie leads the overarching company initiatives towards doing good to our people, planet, and animals. Kankam's role develops, communicates, and executes the sustainability strategy across internal departments and external stakeholders, collaborating on all facets of the business and needs. She is passionate about diversity and inclusion, mental health and mentors young emerging professionals. In addition, Jacquelyn co-chairs the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion strategy alongside the VP of People. Together they set out to be an impactful voice and counsel, on behalf of the whole DECIEM family. Pushing to create a workplace environment idolised and considered by other companies around the world to do even better. Their work has been recognised by industry leaders, winning The Best Ethical Initiative for the Community and Family Funds, as well as the voting and protesting days available to the DECIEM family in the Marie Claire Sustainability Awards 2021. Documents from the Glenbow Museum Archives show that Imperial Oil, a subsidiary of Exxon, knew about the catastrophic effects of climate change before anyone. Instead of telling the world and transforming their business they suppressed their research, started a climate denial PR war and started building dossiers and surveilling climate activists. We talk to Murtaza Hussain of the Intercept about his story on the Esso cover-up and on Iran and his investigative journalism on the Iran Cables.
Proposed Oil Pipeline Affects Indigenous Canadian Community (3:41) The Mackenzie Valley Pipeline stands to be the largest single industrial development project in the history of Canada. Currently being pushed by the Canadian Government in cooperation with Imperial Oil, the Pipeline – if constructed – could access the largest untapped natural gas reserve on the planet. The Mackenzie Pipeline has sparked controversy in Canada, as its construction path is entirely on indigenous territory and is being met with fierce opposition from indigenous communities throughout Canada's northern region.
