In today's ep, Jas & Mags debrief about the latest round of media redundancies that have hit ~very~ close to home. The Devil Wears Prada looks like it's back for a sequel (good luck, Miranda) and Vogue US has appointed a Kennedy as its election political correspondent. Is this an iconic choice or good old nepotism? Next, we discuss Katy Perry's flop rebrand and ask if she's simply capitalising on the hyper pop train. We reference journalist Eilish Gilligan and this piece titled Why Are Mainstream Pop Stars Suddenly Getting Hyperpop Makeovers? by Kyle Munzenrieder. One of 2024's most viral memes has arrived in the form of Hawk Tuah. Hailey Welch has been catapulted into her 15 minutes of fame after a snippet of a TikTok street interview went super viral. We discuss this phenomenon and reference a piece by Thomas Mitchell titled From Chk-Chk-Boom to Hawk Tuah: How TikTok Transformed Street Interviews for the Sydney Morning Herald. We have two light-hearted recommendations this week with Jas loving A Family Affair on Netflix and Maggie reading Red, White, and Royal Blue. This episode is brought to you by I Want to Die But I Still Want to EatTteokbokki, the sequel to the Sunday Times and international bestselling South Koreantherapy memoir by Baek Sehee. CONVIDADO | Kaio Cesar @kaiocsr
Hi pals! In this ep, we cover our brush with celebrity as well as the relationships that are soft launching and crumbling. It seems that Venus Retrograde is (still) wreaking havoc on people's relationships. We reference this Vogue US piece by Laura Pitcher titled, It's Been A Summer Of Relationship Chaos. Was It Written In The Stars? Next, there's a rumour that Red, White and Royal Blue star Nicholas Galitzine is actually royalty. We break it down and reference this Teen Vogue article. What began as a radio segment in New Zealand has quickly turned into a viral movement. “Girl Math” is taking the internet and brunch conversations by storm. We chat about whether it's actually empowering or if it's another way to infantilise women. We read from this Refinery29 article titled, Is Girl Math Really Helping The Girls? By Elizabeth Gulino. We also share this reel from the Girls That Invest account. Follow them! Over in Illinois, they've become the first state to regulate kid influencers. The legislation "creates a private right of action for child influencers against their parents that featured them in videos and did not properly compensate them," according to the governor's website. We chat about why this is important and whether it'll make it to Australia. For recommendations, Jas has been loving Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield, while Maggie has been listening to the Who Shat On The Floor Of Our Wedding? podcast. That's all folks! Chat soon. What were you wearing in the ‘90s, Slushies? Sleeveless flannel and crochet? Paco Rabanne? We're beguiled by Emily Pulfer-Terino's poems on this episode as we discuss how she slides us back to the ‘90s. She has us sniffing magazine perfume inserts and marveling at the properly cranky voice she invokes for an epigraph, borrowed from Vogue's letters to the editor. What were we thinking wearing all those shreds? Only the girls on those glossy pages know for sure. For more context, check out Karina Longworth's excellent podcast, You Must Remember This, and her recent deep dive into the bonkers eroticism of the 1990s. Plus, Sentimental Garbage's episode on Dirty Dancing featuring Curtis Sittenfeld. For a great collection of poems that draws its title from grunge-era jargon (kinda, sorta, wink, wink), we recommend a book we love by our pal Daniel Nester: Harsh Realm: My 1990s. This episode is brought to you by our sponsor Wilbur Records, who kindly introduced us to the artist is A.M.Mills whose song “Spaghetti with Loretta” now opens our show. At the table: Jason Schneiderman, Marion Wrenn, Kathleen Volk Miller, Samantha Neugebauer, and Dagne Forrest Emily Pulfer-Terino is a poet and writer whose work has appeared in Tupelo Quarterly, Hunger Mountain, The Collagist, The Southeast Review, Poetry Northwest, Stone Canoe, The Louisville Review, Juked, and other journals and anthologies. Her poetry chapbook, Stays the Heart, is published by Finishing Line Press. She has been a Tennessee Williams Poetry Scholar at the Sewanee Writers' Conference and has been granted a fellowship for creative nonfiction at the Vermont Studio Center. She holds an MFA in creative writing from Syracuse University, and she lives in Western Massachusetts. Author website: http://emilypulferterino.com/ Instagram: @epulferterino Grunge & Glory “You're kidding. Tell me you're kidding. At least I'll know where to find my new wardrobe this year...in the nearest dumpster…talk about the Emperor's New Clothes. Tsk, tsk.”—(Letter to the Editor)[1] What's more glorious than a girl in a field, curled in the whorl of a deer bed, alfalfa haloing her dreams of fashion magazines while she plies matted hay, untatting her world? Bales score the landscape, parceling endlessness, parsing this solo tableau, while her heroes wrench their music into being in Seattle, gray, time zones away. What's grunge if not her dense crochet of castoff couture curated from dumpsters and worn with a frisson of pride and shame: flowering nightgown, old ski boots, sweater turned lace in places by moths and age? And this field like where models pose in Vogue, each page itself a piece of land and an ethos framed inside a storyboard. Scala Naturae Like prying pods of milkweed so those astral seeds effuse— unseaming magazine ads for perfume. Anointing my wrists with scented glue, running each over the edge of a page, testing scents I aspired to buy and classifying my olfactory taxonomy. Grass evoked the world I'd known with hints of rain and magnolia slight as fog above an unmown field. DNA's rosemary, oakmoss, and mint, ancient and clear as purpose; glass spiraled bottle signifying sentience and enduring iteration. Both ethereal and hyperreal, Destiny offered apricots, orchids, and roses-- bottle opaque as an eyelid, veil of petals sheer as promise. Samsara was amber, sandalwood, ylang ylang, peach. Syllabically lulling, its s and a extending, repeating, suggesting endlessness. Cycle of birth and death rebranded as serenity in ongoingness. Angel's burst of praline and patchouli lit the crystal facets of that star, making heaven of my pulse and ordinary air. [1] Wynne Bittlinger, letter to the editor in Vogue US, February 1993

Today on the show... The 2022 Brit Awards took place yesterday and Adele was the big winner of the night, taking home three awards. Yet when she stepped on stage to give her acceptance speech, her words really didn't hit the mark. And Julia Fox, the actress and podcaster who is currently making headlines thanks to her relationship with Kanye West, appeared on the Call Her Daddy podcast to clear up some misconceptions and we need to talk about one key revelation. Plus, Kim Kardashian has landed her first-ever Vogue US cover, and the accompanying interview was carefully calculated, contained the one question Kim will never answer, and highlighted her biggest hidden strength. There's enough happening in the world of Kardashian over the last few days to warrant a mid-week recap. Emma and Julie start out with some viral moments from Pete Davidson's zoom interview with People. They then broke down Kim's interview for her VOGUE US cover - reading and analyzing various excerpts. They then get into a brief breakdown of Julia Fox on Call Her Daddy. Bernadette Winters Bell, LMSW, PLLC, a life, loss and grief therapist with a private practice in Oneonta, New York, airs episode fifteen of her podcast From Heartache to Healing and Hope on Monday, May 10 The goal of this series is to share and archive stories of varying experiences that may help to shed light and offer hope during the challenging, unprecedented times of the pandemic. Episode fifteen features Bernadette in spirited conversation with Eileen Harcourt, an aesthetician to the fashion and entertainment elite in New York City, Paris, and Upstate New York. W Magazine excerpt about Eileen: "The New York aesthetician Eileen Harcourt spends her days hopping from TriBeCa lofts to Upper East Side penthouses to Hamptons manses, treating a roster of VIP clients that includes Adriana Lima, Lauren Hutton, and Daphne Guinness. A fashion-world favorite, she can often be spotted prepping skin backstage at runway shows and treating models on set for the photographer Steven Klein. She also sees clients at her Upper West Side studio, where, happily, mere mortals are welcome." (eharcourts.com) Featured Guest on Episode Fifteen Eileen Harcourt earned her fashion degree in Boston, and her aesthetic license in cosmetology in New York City. Shortly afterwards she went to Paris and studied with world renowned Jacques Courtin Clarins (CLARINS), the founder and chairman of the Clarins Groupe, a French company that produces luxury skin-care products and makeup made primarily from plant extracts, and with Decleor. After her studies, she founded her own skin care salon in Soho in 1985. She developed the revolutionary use of calming, uplifting oils while administering facials to the stars, and ultimately blended them into a “tranquility” candle for the home. After the success of her product line, she began selling her products wholesale (clients include Club Monaco, Viacom, Lauren Hutton, and many more). In September of 2000 she founded her unique, sensorial shop which included her original candles, soaps and personalized aesthetic services on Mott Street in NYC. She taught classes at the learning Annex on creating your own products, and branched out into television with episodes such as “The Beauty Authority” on Lust for Looks, a men's network fashion program. Eileen has been featured in Vogue (US, Italy, Japan, Mexico), InStyle Magazine, Style.com, Allure, Marie Claire, W, and more. She subsequently developed “pop up” shops in Cherry Valley, New York in the spirit of her original New York City location. In 2005 Eileen pioneered “backstage skin care,” made even more popular by the feature interview with Style.com. Eileen is well-known as a pioneer aesthetician. "People I know, who used to be able to afford to go out on a daily basis [in Lebanon], are now unemployed. They don’t leave their houses because they don’t have enough money to put gas in their tanks." 8 months have passed since the tragic blast that shook the very heart of Beirut, and yet although Lebanon is no longer front page news, the country is facing some of the most difficult times in the country’s history. Rohma Theunissen caught up with Roni Helou, the acclaimed Lebanese designer who spearheaded the United For Lebanese Creatives crowdfunding initiative in August 2020, to talk about the extent of the country’s triple crisis, how it is impacting the people who live there on a daily basis and why talking about Lebanon is essential.Hosted by: Rohma Theunissen About Roni HelouBorn in Lebanon in 1992, Roni Helou is a conscious ready-to-wear designer based in Beirut. In 2016 upon his graduation from Creative Space Beirut, progressive fashion school that offers free design education, Roni showcased his collections at Fashion Forward Dubai for two seasons under the patronage of Rabih Kayrouz and the Starch Foundation. We like the quirk, and that's what photographer Enoch Ku captured while cruising around his hometown of Sacramento, CA. A set of hedges cut into the shape of playing card suits, a manhole cover ambiguously lined up with a street's divider lines, playful shadows cast by a bike rack. Ordinary Sacramento is the name of the project. Also in this episode: Tim Kane creates a photo/video package of the isolated town of Yellowknife in the Northwestern Territories of Canada which closed itself off to all outsiders during the pandemic to protect its indigenous elders, project images of the fallen on the Brooklyn Bridge, Rally Studios' amazing FPV drone in a bowling alley, Hannah McKay captures the vigil and protest for Sarah Everard, and Nadine Ijewere lands the cover of Vogue US as the first Black female photographer.

We also discuss imagery in the fashion industry and talk about the nuance behind modeling and selecting jobs — that is choosing to be the tangible and visual representation of a brand and/or product — and our responsibility as people inside the industry in regards to what products of fashion people are exposed to and have access to.

Jonas talks about his journey to 40 and, how, despite having all of these skills and all of these talents and getting amazing work he talks about not being in alignment with his inner self. How he turned his back on the commercial world for awhile. If there's one thing you should take away from here, its the quest for solitude!Jonas mentions Helmut Lang's philosophy on different work for each age. https://www.nytimes.com/2005/05/26/fashion/thursdaystyles/decline-and-fall-of-helmut-lang.htmlFollow Jonas on instagram @https://www.instagram.com/jonasungerMore about Jonas below---If you aren't part of the This is 40 Community come join us. Even today, his closeness to the water during his childhood manifests itself in a pronounced passion for the coast and the sea.At the age of 13, Jonas and his grandfather, a professor of theology from Heidelberg, set off on a study trip through the then still existing Eastern Bloc - by car through Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania to Greece.Jonas likes to capture the many impressions and starts experimenting with his grandfather's camera and capturing the people and their stories. A passion that has not let him go until today. After finishing his studies, he moved to Paris to concentrate on photography and to understand it better. After a while Jonas begins to take photographs for M Le Monde, Zeit Magazin and SZ Magazin, among others. A LEAD Award follows, finally the golden nail of the ADC in 2011 for his Gérard Depardieu reportage for Zeit Magazin. For Jonas, photography means above all communication: the basis from which every story, every idea develops, is always the portrait, the encounter and confrontation with people, always the story to be told. Jonas transfers this approach to all formats, whether travel, documentation, product or fashion - at the beginning there is always a story told around the object to be photographed.Today, he photographs for the most prestigious magazines and exclusive customers in the world and has had the most diverse personalities in front of his camera, from Amy Adams and Julianne Moore to Christoph Waltz, Virgil Abloh, Joaquin Phoenix, Ryan Gosling and Paul Pogba..Customer list editorial: M Le Monde, Vogue France, Vogue US, Zeit Magazin, Wall Street Journal Magazine, Self Service, Purple Magazine, Vogue Dutch, Vogue Me, Interview US, Another Magazine, etc.Hermes, Chanel, Tod's, Tom Ford, Chloé, Birkenstock, Arket, Ermenegildo Zegna, Etc.

Earlier this month, American gymnast Simone Biles was featured on the cover of Vogue US. The images received backlash online for “bad lighting”, and some comments raised questions about why a black photographer with more experience of photographing black skin wasn't used. But Vogue US told The Next Episode that there was a lot of positive feedback from the audience and from Simone herself. Hosted by Linda Adey. Soundtracked by BBC Music Introducing.

. . . Le temps passant, le côté humain joue un rôle de plus en plus important pour moi.REFERENCES :OBO https://oboglobal.eu/Ubi Bene http://ubi-bene.fr/Institut Savignac https://www.ecole-de-savignac.com/Relais & château https://www.relaischateaux.com/fr/Potel & chabot https://poteletchabot.com/Victoria Secret https://ww.victoriassecret.com/fr/?cm_mmc=SEM-_-Google-FR-_-vsint_brand_FR_FR_Brand_HighVis-_-ST_Exact_victoriasecret&gclid=Cj0KCQjwl6LoBRDqARIsABllMSYjyrSGwFf6ARHG7KGcURtb0n4mJMJxzf8MlY3qee5ag6JCfYLXjI0aAqyZEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.dsMET Gala https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Met_GalaJohn Galiano https://www.johngalliano.com/LVMH https://www.lvmh.fr/Vogue US https://www.vogue.com/magazineMusée Rodin http://www.musee-rodin.fr/Bureau Betak http://www.bureaubetak.comKCD https://www.kcdworldwide.com/Stella McCartney https://www.stellamccartney.com/frGucci https://www.gucci.com/fr/fr/Nina Ricci https://www.ninaricci.com/fr-FR/Eva Herzigova https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eva_Herzigov%C3%A1Made Fashion Week http://ma.de/Joseph Altuzarra https://www.altuzarra.com/en-fr/Alexander Wang https://www.alexanderwang.com/fr-en/Episode Alexandre Mattiussi https://soundcloud.com/entreprendre-dans-la-mode/79-alexandre-mattiussi-amiL’ANDAM https://andam.fr/Antonin Tron https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonin_TronAtlein http://www.atlein.com/L’Oréal Paris https://www.loreal-paris.fr/Giorgio Armani https://www.armani.com/fr/armanicom/unisexe/giorgio-armani/cross_sectionBalenciaga https://www.balenciaga.com/frLouis Vuitton https://fr.louisvuitton.com/fra-fr/homepageVêtements https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/VetementsTom Ford https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_FordBernard Arnault https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernard_Arnault
Calling planet earth! Artist Yinka Shonibare CBE, acclaimed saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings, fashion designer Mowalola Ogunlesi, and Get Up, Stand Up Now curator Zak Ové explore themes around Black futures and afro-futurism. Presented by spoken word artist Joshua Idehen. Music by Shabaka Hutchings and GAIKA, excerpts from Sun Ra Arkestra BBC Radio 3 session courtesy of Somethin' Else and BBC Radio 3. Producer: Mae-Li Evans The series was produced by Reduced Listening and Somerset House Yinka Shonibare CBE Yinka Shonibare’s work explores issues of race and class through painting, sculpture, photography and film. Having described himself as a ‘post-colonial’ hybrid, Shonibare questions the meaning of cultural and national definitions. His trademark material is the brightly coloured ‘African’ batik fabric he buys at Brixton Market. The fabric was inspired by Indonesian design, mass-produced by the Dutch and eventually sold in British colonies in West Africa. In the 1960s, the material became a new sign of African identity and independence. Shabaka Hutchings constantly evaluates his music’s relationship to Caribbean and jazz traditions, and sees his role as pushing the boundaries of both. His trajectory started early when he moved to Barbados at the age of six, began studying classical clarinet aged nine, and graduated to tenor saxophone, which has been a regular part of his performances since his return to the UK aged 16. Hutchings has three primary projects – Shabaka and the Ancestors, Sons of Kemet and The Comet is Coming. Between them, Hutchings has gathered a substantial number of awards and nominations, including winning the 2013 MOBO Jazz Act of the Year. Mowalola Ogunlesi founded the menswear brand Mowalola in 2017 to celebrate the African male and culture, sexuality and desire. He was awarded Best New Designer at the 2018 Milan Fashion Film Festival. Mowalola had its London Fashion Week debut in January 2019 with Fashion East and their work has been featured in publications such as Vogue UK, Vogue US, i-D, Dazed & Confused, Surface Magazine, SHOWstudio and W Magazine. Celebrities. They just know how to look fabulous for every occasion, right? Well, no. Turns out, there is a fashion mastermind behind most red carpet moments these days, and none is more revered than Kate Young. As go-to stylist for the stars, Kate has put (and kept) names like Margot Robbie, Selina Gomez, Sienna Miller and Rachel Weisz on the fashion map. Oscars? Cannes? MET Gala? Publicity tours? You name it, she’s orchestrated the look for it! Fashion No Filter flew to New York on the eve of The MET Ball — fashion’s biggest red carpet extravaganza — to catch up with Kate and find out what her job really entails. Tune in for an unfiltered discussion on the current climate in fashion, what its really like working for Anna Wintour (Kate started her career at Vogue US where she went from being Anna’s assistant to holding the Sittings Editor position for many years before turning her attention to full time celebrity styling), the scoop on how fashion icons, and their iconic looks are made — from fittings to fiascos — not to mention some pretty real chat about what it means to be a feminist today. And, stay for a bonus review of The MET Gala’s weirdest and most wonderful looks in the form of a rap (!) by beat poet/fashion publicist Sophie Roche Conti. Some of the topics discussed include: What motivation is and what it isn’t: Mark defines it as whatever gets you moving. How to foster long-term motivation when the project or goal is not short-term. How organization and sticking to a schedule can help keep you motivated. How curiosity makes a big difference when it comes to motivation and follow-through. Mark’s first thoughts on mojo, including what he does when his is flagging, what doesn’t work, who inspires him, and his mantra.
