Lessons from the 1866 Battle of Lissa

The U.S. Navy faced multiple threats in an emerging technology environment. The past two years have offered many lessons about the efficacy of anti-ship ballistic missiles and unmanned platforms and we must identify and learn them. The lessons from Ukraine and Yemen are shaping fleet design for the next generation. Understanding the context of the lessons from the conflicts is crucial. What can the Battle of Lissa tell us? In 1866, the navies of Austria and Italy fought near the island of Vis. Cutting the story short, the Austrians attacked in formations designed to aggressively ram the Italian ships, winning the battle despite an inferior status. The lessons of Lissa would impact naval design for the next 50 years. Before the Battle navies believed in the big gun. After Lissa navies were copying the Austrians and adding rams to new ships and developing ram-based tactics. But the lesson was wrong and the torpedo was the future. As modern navies prepare for future conflict, it is important to understand the context of lessons, or risk drawing faulty conclusions. Past as Prologue For nearly 150 years, from De Ruyter until Nelson, naval tactics were static. Wooden ships fought each other with broadsides. Technical innovations squeezed more efficiency at the margins. Copper sheathing improved ships' maneuverability with additional speed. The carronade increased the lethality of a ship's broadside while decreasing cannon weight. These technological advances did not change the general tactic of pummeling ships with cannon broadsides. The 19th century was an age of technological revolution and emerging technology. In 1807, Robert Fulton tested his first steamboat in New York. This technology would continue to develop throughout the century. The steam engine revolutionized naval warfare because ocean-going warships were no longer beholden to the wind for maneuver. Developments in artillery meant that cannons were capable of firing explosive shells on flat trajectories to destroy wooden-hulled warships. By the 1840s, France and Britain sold these weapons to any nation that had the coin for them. Even the Republic of Texas Navy employed explosive shells fired from cannons. Explosive shells were great equalizers in naval combat. Armored warships appeared in the 1850s to counter improved artillery. France was the first nation to use armored warships during the Crimean War. Armored ships were impervious to the explosive shells of the age. The naval question of the second half of the 19th century was how to defeat armored vessels while naval guns improved sufficiently to threaten armored warships. The see-saw between warships' armor and artillery lasted until the end of the battleship era. Ramming Austria, Prussia, and Italy fought a war in 1866. Most historians know the War of 1866 as the Austro-Prussian War, but in Italy it is known as the Third Italian War of Unification. Ashore, the Austro-Prussian War was decided at the battle of Sadowa (Königgrätz). In Italy, Austria defeated the Italian army at Custozza again and at sea at Lissa. The Austrians were commanded by Admiral Wilhelm von Tegetthoff. His officers all understood his battle plans and they had painted their ships different colours to help identification. Although Tegetthoff's ships were smaller and carried smaller guns they would attempt to break the Italian line with three V-shaped formations. The first V composed his ironclads, the second V composed his large steam frigates, and the third V composed the fleet's smallest ships. Just before the battle the Italian commander, Admiral Persano shifted his flag to another ship. This caused tremendous confusion in the Italian Fleet because the shift was not planned for. Italian commanders looked to the old flagship for leadership and direction but found none. Tegetthoff's fleet broke the line in two places. The first V, led by Tegetthoff, engaged the central portion of the fleet. The second V of unarmoured ships broke the line n...

Robert Fulton has long been known as the inventor of the steam-powered boat. Except that's not true - he developed the first commercially successful steam-powered boat. Fulton was an innovator on the work of John Fitch, the actual inventor. It's funny how a man's name can be associated with something that lost a bit (or a lot) of its meaning because of popular notions. The same could be said of Jesus Christ. Did you know that there were seven times that he self-referenced himself with categorical statements beginning with "I am ..."? These are important not only because of what he said, but to whom he said it to, and to their universal application to all mankind. The greatest statesmen whoever lived (and they said nation-building things!) babbled toddler noises when compared to the profoundly powerful things Jesus said about himself - and what that means to you and me. Auto Supply Chain Prophets
The Future Is Now for Automotive Supply Chain

Auto Supply Chain Prophets

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 17, 2022 20:16 Transcription Available

An industrial revolution is happening in automotive supply chain. It's having its Kodak moment. But can the industry get ahead of the curve to avoid a similar fate? Traditional OEMs are feeling the pressure from electric vehicle (EV) startups. Dealing with disruptive, innovative new entrants is nothing new for most industries, but it feels fresh for automotive. In round two of this special Auto Supply Chain Prophets interview, we're rejoined by veteran auto writer and editor Gary Vasilash to talk about the automotive supply chain future that's already arrived. Themes discussed in this episode:  How traditional OEMs can adapt supply chain strategies in preparation for the EV revolution. Why creating a stable supply chain for EV isn't the same as for the internal combustion engine. Why managing supplier performance is new ground for automotive, and how to learn from other industries — or even pivot into them. How distinctive premium products might kill the mass market. Why separating product and process is all in the execution. Featured on this Episode  Name: Gary Vasilash Title: Transportation Editor, https://www.gardnerweb.com/ (Gardner Business Media) About: Gary Vasilash has been working for Gardner Business media for 30 years, where he writes about design, engineering, manufacturing and management within the automotive industry. He also co-hosts http://www.autoline.tv/journal/?cat=1513 (Autoline After Hours), a weekly podcast for car lovers and auto industry enthusiasts. Connect: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gary-vasilash-2872397/ (LinkedIn)  Episode HighlightsTimestamped inflection points from the show [1:25] Here today, gone tomorrow: Is EV technology a revolution for the automotive industry? Gary seems to think so, and explains how. [3:11] Ch-ch-changes: EV is shifting strategy for automotive supply chain in some obvious (and some surprising) ways. It all depends on what you're making and how you're making it. [6:01] Keeping it stable: OEMs creating a capable, stable supply chain when it comes to EV isn't going to be the same as the internal combustion engine — especially in light of all the new startup entrants. [9:35] Have faith: With all this change, managing supplier performance isn't new for most industries but it is a new challenge for automotive. [11:47] (Trying to) stay alive: Are new EV startups niche players in the making? Will traditional OEMs buy them up or merge with them? It's like automotive in the Great Depression. Maybe the future isn't in economies of scale but in charging for a distinctive, premium product that isn't a mass product. [13:58] The rules they are a-changin': Right in front of our eyes, traditional automotive giants have pivoted into software to drive revenue. [15:09] Premium models: Batteries — and the plants that build them — are what costs the most in EVs, which drives a high-end market. Gary explains it has little to do with tax breaks or the Inflation Reduction Act. [18:30] The one thing: Automotive supply chain leaders need “to separate the product from the process.” It's all in the execution, whether the vehicle's electric, hydrogen fuel cell or internal combustion engine based. With the right resources from a process standpoint, they'll get costs right and profit. Top quotes[1:25] Cathy: “EV [is] the automotive industry's Kodak moment: [It's] here today, gone tomorrow — in terms of a technology.”  [2:59] Gary: “The auto industry is doing better than other industries did, in terms of saying, Hey, we're going to make our future. We're not going to be reacting to the future.”  [4:15] Gary: “If this is revolution — as we submit — there are substantial changes such that what you used to be doing may not be relevant, and this is devastating for a lot of people. What did those people who were making horses and buggies do? … What happened to sailing ships when Robert Fulton said, Hmm, steamships might be a better way of...

Starting with Air Cargo, is One Record the totem for which IATA decided to ditch its IATA FIATA program? Was the entire IATA FIATA negotiation just a straddle strategy? Time to celebrate 30 years of the CNS Partnership recalling the people that made the "Partnership" go Meet Francesco Parisi Up Close & Personal When Parisi went into business in 1807 Napoleon was alive and signed a peace treaty with Russia; Ludwig von Beethoven debuted his Symphony Number 4 and Robert Fulton launched his first steamboat on the Hudson River in New York. Natchez Trace: A Road Through the Wilderness

"Annus mirabilis -- miraculous year. This comes from Jonathan Daniels story of the Natchez Trace, The Devil's Backbone. "In 1811 the steamboat pioneer, Robert Fulton, hired Nicholas Roosevelt to travel the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to see if a steamboat could navigate them. Roosevelt and his bride took there honeymoon 6 months on board a flatboat to check out the rivers and determined that it was indeed possible for a steamboat to negotiate the currents. So Roosevelt built a steamboat named the New Orleans, and in the fall of 1811, Nicholas and his wife, an engineer, a pilot, six hands and a dog set out from Pittsburgh on board a 300 ton steamboat, headed for Natchez and points south. "As though announcing the beginning of this new era of river travel, a great comet shown against a moonlit night, as the New Orleans made its way down the river past Louisville, Kentucky. "After the New Orleans sailed past the section of the Mississippi River that lies along the western border of the state of Tennessee, the first shocks of an earthquake struck near New Madrid, Mo. on December the 16th. "On our next program we will finish our story of the miraculous year of 1811 with the forming of Reelfoot Lake while we listen to a bit of RoadMusic® along the way. For Natchez Trace a road through the wilderness, I'm Frank Thomas." For more about Natchez Trace: A Road Through the Wilderness, visit eddieandfrank.com

Natchez Trace: A Road Through the Wilderness

"Today on our journey up the Natchez Trace Parkway from Natchez, Mississippi to Nashville, Tennessee we visit another of the trading posts established along the Old Trace, McGLAMERY STAND. It was built in 1849 by John McGlamery, quite late in the old road's history. This stand didn't survive the Civil War, but today, the nearby village is known as McGlamery Stand. "'Annus mirabilis' is the title of a chapter in the book Devil's Backbone by Jonathan Daniels.  This is Latin meaning "Miraculous Year." The title was inspired by a quotation from the Englishman Charles J. Latrobe, who journeyed through the American West with Washington Irving in 1811. To Latrobe 1811 was a year of miracles. "In America early in 1811, many rivers flooded, and the flooding was followed by a great deal of sickness. Then there was an unexplained migration of squirrels from the north, tens of thousands, charging south in droves. Nothing seemed to stop them and large numbers perished in the broad waters of the Ohio River, which lay along their path. "The steamboat pioneer, Robert Fulton, hired Nicholas Roosevelt to travel the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to see if a steamboat could navigate them. On our next program we will journey down the Mississippi on a barge with Roosevelt and his newly wed wife. "For Natchez Trace a road through the wilderness, I'm Frank Thomas." Radio Toni – Up in the air with Robert Fulton Show 2 Sunday 7th March 2021- 4pm PT USA = 7PM ET USA and Monday 10am AEST (Australia) via zoom Talking Points and questions Welcome and intro – FB, website, like subscribe and email – hi to Paolo, listening on the live streams ready to answer all your questions and send you any of the links you'd like. TONI – This is the second in our series of shows our guest today is an inspirational reinvention specialist, author, and pilot. Robert Fulton was just 3 months shy of retirement, having fully vested in his employer's retirement plan, when they pulled his program and laid everyone off! Robert was forced to reinvent himself and for the first time in his life, in his 50yr career he was grounded. Robert had to figure out how to overcome PTDS, deep depression and what on earth to do in his late 60's. Out of this time was born a book – Up in the sir, a pilot's journey, his aviation memoir spanning 50 yrs. Robert also became an award winning speaker with Toastmasters and now he speaks on overcoming obstacles, reinvention, retirement and leadership. About the book - Up in the Air With more than 20,000 flying hours, Robert Fulton takes you "up in the air" in a series of 10 chapters that detail stories produced by a wide variety of fixed-wing and helicopter missions that on occasion rise to the level of breathtaking terror as well as the luxury of immense relief. In a career spanning almost 50 years, Fulton dives into the riddles of fate in the air, into life's struggle to survive no matter what - finding a way, risking life and limb to achieve a goal, taking calculated risks to overcome an obstacle that blocks your progress. Lessons applicable to life and living are paralleled by the author through lessons in flight where the elements and fate's cruellest outcomes are presented as experiences to learn from. Up in the Air: A Pilot's Journey will have you paying rapt attention to find out how the story ended or what is next, but it will also give you the feelings of the author as he steers in hopeful directions for a favorable outcome for patients, passengers, and fellow pilots who deserve success and to be shielded from fate at its worst. Good evening Robert and welcome to Radio Toni we are so delighted to have you back again this week. Last week we spoke extensively about your life and career and today we want to focus on your amazing book, Up in the Air There's a lovely description of the first time you went up in aircraft, as a child. Can you recount this for the audience, it's a wonderful memory for you isn't it? I noted a wonderful phase from the first chapter of the book, UP in the Air the chapter is called 30sec over Tokyo. I don't want to give away the story but there's a phase I loved from this chapter “Bull riding in the snow” Can you tell the audience what this wonderful phrase refers to? You describe 400 orange helicopters converging from all points in the universe on the Parker County Court house, like bees swarming to the bee hive. What is this describing, and can you take our listeners back to that time and place? One on the Chapters in UP in the Air focuses on fate and the analogy you use is about fortune cookies. Let's talk about fate. How much does the concept of fate enter your mind as a young man flying combat missions in Vietnam in helicopters? How did you deal with this across your career and what are your thoughts about fate? The impact of being part of Vietnam left lifelong impacts, are you happy to talk about Vietnam Robert? What was it like dealing with war as such a young man? What did you do to cope whilst there? What was it like coming home? What are your thoughts about helping our veterans recover to wholeness after being in a war zone? What are snakes and what was their significance in Vietnam? Night flying and snow flying – they are both make for really challenging flying – what are the implications of flying aircraft/helicopters at night? What about the snow and cold? In UP in the Air you write about flying accidents/incidents and dangerous situations, you have had many of those across your career, can you tell the audience about one of those, how did you get back in a plane/helicopter, do those near-death experiences change the way you fly, the way you live life? Up in the Air is peppered with wonderful insights into the technical components of flight, from helicopters to aircraft. You're an expert in this field how did you accomplish the difficulty of converting this type of technical information into such readable and interesting script for readers? Up in the Air is a series of short stories from your decades in the air. Do you have a favourite chapter, if so why? Why do you think women are buying this memoir in such numbers and especially for their husbands? You've had some amazing book reviews so far and I want to read one of these for the listeners today – Book Reviews: Exciting Flying Memoir! A collection of auto-biographical short stories from the author's experiences as a both a helicopter and fixed-wing pilot, Robert Fulton's thrilling new memoir kept me turning the pages late into the night! Fulton writes gut-wrenching moments that brought me to tears and hair-raising experiences explained in detail. The author's wonderful story-telling puts the reader right in the pilot's seat through Vietnam, Arctic flying, perilous wire-filled cities, and low-visibility night flying. “Up in the Air” is an excellent read to be enjoyed by pilots and passengers alike. Finally, what does the future look like for Robert Fulton author, speaker pilot hold? Robert Fulton, thank you! Toni Mention all the ways to connect with Robert, where to buy the book, speaking opportunities.
