Jamie is an employment professional and works with organisations and learning institutes to help them offer relevant learning opportunities to individuals. His work is very focussed on the skills that people need to find suitable employment and build their careers. Jamie shares not only his career story on the show but also some tips, ideas, guidance, and resources that people can use to continue their learning journey. Key TakeawaysWhile you are ultimately responsible for your career, don't underestimate the value of your parents, career or guidance counsellors, and mentorsCertain people find jobs because of their social capital (it's not what you know, it's who you know) and you can build your social capital using tools like networkingWhen thinking about building transferable skills for the future (ca. 2030), think about skills that are difficult for artificial intelligence to replace like creativity, critical thinking, adaptability, communications, reliability, and even project managementStorytelling is a fantastic communication and learning tool because people can relate to storiesHaving a part-time job at school and whilst studying is vitally important as it helps build transferable skills and prepares you for the workplaceIn addition to the usual books and online courses that are used for learning, think about other approaches like attending conference and networkingWhen considering further education in the arts and humanities fields, think about the skills that employers may be looking for and how these might be learnt in your chosen field of studyHaving a growth mindset is vital to your continued learning and developmentBe responsive to opportunities and enjoy making the choices you need to makeResources MentionedJamie shared many resources during the interview:The National Careers Service for information, advice and guidance to help make decisions on learning, training and work.YouTube for everything from coding to fixing your hot water boilerUdemy for a vast selection of free and well-priced online coursesThe World Economic Forum - skills for your futureThe Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development - skills and workThe Open University - free coursesThe London Interdisciplinary School - an interdisciplinary undergraduate course, built around real-world problemsRecommended ReadingJamie recommends reading the following books:The Rise of the Robots: Technology and the Threat of Mass Unemployment by Martin FordMindset: Changing The Way You think To Fulfil Your Potential by Carol DweckConnect with JamieListeners can learn more about and connect with Jamie by visiting his LinkedIn profile or Twitter page.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/gunterrichter)

Martin Ford is a prominent futurist, New York Times bestselling author, and leading expert on artificial intelligence and robotics and their potential impact on the job market, economy and society. His 2015 book, "Rise of the Robots: Technology and the Threat of a Jobless Future" won the Financial Times and McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award and has been translated into more than 20 languages. In this episode, Martin discusses his best-selling books and describes some of the themes he writes about. For instance, in Rise of the Robots he talks about “The Triple Revolution” which was a report presented to U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson fifty years ago that argued this would be a dramatic change to the economy; however, it never really panned out. Martin’s argument for artificial intelligence started back in 2009 after writing his first book titled The Lights in the Tunnel. Ultimately, artificial intelligence will become so powerful that it can have a significant impact on employment that will compete with a large fraction of the workforce. Enjoy the show! AI (Artificial Intelligence), ML (Machine Learning) and DL (Deep Learning) are some of the hottest IT buzzwords of our time. If you’re working in tech industry, chances are that you hear or read something about them almost every day. It looks like they are the answer to every question, and the solution to every problem, including wars and global hunger. AI/ML is used in self-driving cars, but what about self-driving, self-optimising data centers? On the 19th episode of Virtual Stack Podcast, I’m joined by Greg Burk, Senior Staff Architect at VMware, and we discuss about AI, ML, and their use cases in today’s Enterprise IT, especially Self-Driving and Self-Optimizing Data Centers. Hope you enjoy the show. Feel free to share your feedback via Twitter (@emregirici), LinkedIn or virtualstack.tech. Show Notes: 02:00 - Intro 05:10 - What’s AI (Artificial Intelligence), ML (Machine Learning) and DL (Deep Learning)? 12:00 - AI/ML is not a new technology, what caused the big increase in popularity in the last 3-4 years? 18:00 - Where (use case, vertical, industry) do you expect AI to drive the biggest transformation? 26:30 - How do you expect AI/ML primarily serve in the Data Center? For driving the DC autonomously, or only for log crunching and creating insights for the people that are running the DC? 35:00 - Is it possible to achieve self-drive and self-optimisation in a HW defined DC, or is SDDC a must? 40:00 - What’s VMware’s approach on Self-Driving/Optimizing Data Centers? This year celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the Orlando Regionals and we had the distinct pleasure of speaking with Woodie Flowers, who was in attendance to mark the occasion. Woodie, an emeritus professor of mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has a distinguished résumé with an impressive list of honors and achievements. In our circles, however, he is best known as being the co-founder of FIRST Robotics Competition, along with Dean Kamen in 1992. It was Woodie who coined the phrase and environment of Gracious Professionalism, which is truly a cornerstone value in this amazing organization. It was great to get his perspective on how FIRST has evolved over the years and the direction for the future. We've come from simplistic beginnings of having the robots decipher colors to using vision technology with the use of cameras that take the robots capabilities to the next level. But it doesn't stop with how advanced the robots get. There's a lot more to it. There's a responsibility that comes with such rapidly advancing technology because although it's wonderful to have all of these new capabilities at our fingertips, there are always those out there who will use the progress for nefarious purposes. The fact that FIRST has already built in a culture of honesty, graciousness and truth seeking gives these students a tremendous edge for facing such obstacles in the future. The kids are also given the understanding that although they have the advantage of likely being very successful in their future careers, they also need to teach others along the way. Make sure to watch this insightful interview with Woodie. He has a special way of understanding and appreciating the advancements in the world of technology and seeing beyond to how it can impact society as a whole. His favorite part of this journey with FIRST is the underlying philosophy of what they do. Sponsored by: Support our coverage by shopping Amazon here. He has over 25 years experience in the fields of computer design and software development. He has written about the implications of future technology for publications including The New York Times, Fortune, Forbes, Harvard Business Review, The Financial Times, The Atlantic, and The Washington Post. Ford is a frequent keynote speaker on the subject of accelerating progress in robotics and artificial intelligence—and what these advances mean for the economy, job market and society of the future. Check out his Ted Talk on the topic. Ford’s perspective on what is going on in the world of work: He believes there will be impact from technology on jobs. Jobs that are repetitive may be replaced by AI. Even beyond those that are commonly discussed, such as traditional ‘blue collar’ jobs may be affected. For example, lawyers or doctors in radiology may be impacted by AI. Jobs that involve creativity will remain for the foreseeable future. About half of the jobs in the economy may be impacted by AI –it could be staggering. So, we need to discuss the possible outcomes. Ford also believes that this time the transition will be different than it has been in the past, during the first three industrial revolutions. Why? First, because we have thinking machines – in a limited sense. This is different. Machines are beginning to encroach on human work Second, it is very broad-based. It is difficult to think of what jobs won’t be impacted by AI 3 scenarios of future of work with AI: Mass unemployment – no one has any money to spend, the economy collapses. It looks a lot like we have now – inequality, quality of jobs is declining, maybe a college grad needs to take minimum wage jobs Things adapt and there is a significant growth of jobs that people can transition into as they lose their current job Fords advice to executives: AI is going to be an enormous disruption and how business will compete AI is going to be another kind of capital that will require attention This will have a big impact on employees – so think about humane ways to downsize What is your responsibility as a citizen? Engage in the public debate on AI His advice for employees: If you are doing repetitive work – the risk is that your job will be replaced. Try to transition to a more creative position or one which has a component of caring – such as nursing or healthcare. Episode Highlights: Cutting-edge technology to come The future of work with AI Viable guaranteed basic income Why this transition will be different than past industrial revolutions Possible future of Amazon employees

He is also the founder of a Silicon Valley based software development company and recently started Genesis Systems, focused on creating sustainable water by way of atmospheric water retention systems. He has over 25 years of experience in software development and systems. His newest book is “Rise of the Robots: Technology and the Threat of a Jobless Future.” What was the trigger that caused Martin to go down the path of studying artificial intelligence? He was running a small software company from the mid 90’s to the 2000’s. He saw first hand in that short span of time how rapid technology was shifting jobs. Once his interest was sparked, he quickly began looking beyond just the loss of jobs and thinking of the economical ripple effect of jobs disappearing. How do we disrupt the economical and social impact of severe unemployment? Martin proposes a “basic income”. Basic income would be enough money for the typical individual to get by on and survive, but not thrive. Controversial? Yes. Michael and Martin end the podcast discussing the ever looming threat of sustainable water and Martin’s newest venture, Genesis Systems. In this fifth episode of The Future Is A Mixtape, Matt & Jesse discuss Peter Frase's diaphanous, compact and idea-drenched work of “Social Science Fiction,” which revs up & rides out to the sweet page-count of 150 pages, and contains far more ideas than most books three-times its size (ahem, The Circle). Frase's nonfiction book, Four Futures: Life After Capitalism, argues that there are actually four possible futures for humanity. The book accomplishes this task, ingeniously so, by threading together science fiction novels as well as marxist and futurist theories to see what aspects will appear in these futures, and how they might overlap or build off one another. The author doesn't simply re-shuffle the easy card-deck of the Star Trek versus The Matrix techno-binary--that Yanis Varoufakis and other activist-thinkers often cite as the only two techno-futures available. Instead, Peter Frase offers up four possible futures: Communism, Rentism, Socialism and Exterminism. And by coordinating these “ideal types” upon the axis points of equity vs hierarchy and abundance vs scarcity, the author illuminates what these four futures are likely to give us. Artificial intelligence, robotics, and automation technologies are fulfilling (and surpassing) predictions from the most creative science fiction. While the possibilities are exciting, these changes force us to ask what this means for the future of work. What jobs will they replace? Which industries will they decimate? What impact will they have on how we live and work in what many are calling a post-industrial age? Martin Ford explores these questions and more, in his bestselling book, Rise of the Robots: Technology and the Threat of a Jobless Future. Named 2015 Business Book of the Year by the Financial Times and McKinsey, his book is helping to drive a much-needed conversation around the dark side of innovative technologies. As a software company founder who has worked in the industry for over 30 years, Martin saw how automation was eliminating more and more jobs. This led him to research the impact of cutting-edge technologies on labor, wages, and productivity. In this episode you will learn: why this time is different when it comes to the impact of automation on jobs the important role education will play in how we respond and adapt why we need to rethink income and healthcare policies to ensure a healthy economy the pressing need to raise awareness around this issue and to incentivize solutions Selected Links to Topics Mentioned @MFordFuture Luddite Martin Luther King, Jr. Triple Revolution Machine learning Deep Learning Artificial intelligence The Three Breakthroughs That Have Finally Unleashed Artificial Intelligence on the World by Kevin Kelly Everlaw Long tail distribution Ray Kurzweil Basic or guaranteed income Single-payer healthcare X Prize Peter Diamandis If you enjoyed the podcast, please rate and review it on iTunes. Martin Ford is the founder of a Silicon Valley-based software development firm and the author of two books: The New York Times bestselling Rise of the Robots: Technology and the Threat of a Jobless Future and The Lights in the Tunnel: Automation, Accelerating Technology and the Economy of the Future. He has more than 25 years’ experience in the fields of computer design and software development. Marc Lewis, a professor at Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, is a cognitive neuroscientist known for his research on the development of emotions and personality in childhood and adolescence. His current work, based on an integrative review of the neuroscience of addiction, shows that addiction is not a pathological state but rather an unfortunate result of a brain doing what it's supposed to do -- in fact overdoing it: pursuing pleasure and avoiding risk. Accordingly, he argues that to understand addiction we need to stop thinking of it as a disease. Lewis's 2012 book, Memoirs of an Addicted Brain, is an account of his addiction to drugs as a young man, with accompanying explanations of the neurobiological processes underlying various drug experiences as well as the process of addiction itself. His new book is called The Biology of Desire: Why Addiction is Not a Disease.
