Paren 8-0 Weird news: Alligators in the sewer myth is true: In Oviedo, Florida, a work crew discovered a 5-foot alligator residing in a sludge-filled pipe during a routine pothole inspection. The shocking encounter was captured on video and has garnered attention on social media. The workers initially mistook the alligator for a toad until they saw its glowing eyes. While the discovery may seem like a Florida version of the "alligators in the sewer" urban legend associated with New York City, it's not uncommon for alligators to be found in storm runoff networks in Florida. The article also mentions previous incidents of alligators appearing unexpectedly in places like New York City parks and Prospect Park Lake in Brooklyn...........This from Ny post Well Paulding County: If you are missing an alligator in your pond, check the sewers! Can you speak chicken? AI can translate for you: Researchers in Japan have used AI to decode the emotional states of chickens by analyzing their vocalizations. The study, led by University of Tokyo professor Adrian David Cheok, employed a technique called Deep Emotional Analysis Learning (DEAL) to identify six distinct emotional states in chickens, including hunger, fear, anger, contentment, excitement, and distress, with 80% accuracy. The team collaborated with animal psychologists and veterinary surgeons, analyzing 80 birds and around 200 hours of chicken sounds. The findings have implications for animal welfare, veterinary medicine, poultry farming conditions, and human-animal interaction. They also plan to create a free app for farmers to communicate with their chickens using this technology. Wow Paulding County you can now use AI to talk to your chickens!!!! When the seizure started and we recognized after a minute or so that this was not a typical one for her (she had a history is seizures) we immediately started loading her up to get her to the emergency vet closest to us which is Westside Animal Emergency. They turned us away. Despite us having a dog actively seizing non-stop they turned us away saying they were “at capacity” and too busy. By this time the seizure was into the 20 minute mark. Our only choice at this point was to drive another 30-40 minutes away to Blue Pearl in Marietta. I called them and let them know we were coming and how long at that time the seizure had been going. We got there and they rushed out the door to help us. Within a minute or so we were with the vet telling us the seizure had gone on so long that it had raised Lulu's body temperature to at least 109 because that is as high as the thermometer would go. Her seizing for almost an hour caused the temperature spike. At this point the vet felt while they could try to stabilize her and see if there was permanent brain damage but I knew the chances of Lulu making any meaningful recovery were almost non-existent. A fever that high plus the seizure made recovery impossible so we had to make the best choice for Lulu and let her be at peace. I say all of that to say, IF Westside EMERGENCY Animal clinic had done their job and taken in a true EMERGENCY within the first minutes of the seizure, I wonder would we still have Lulu with us today? Instead, we came home to an empty bed that was Lulu's. Her doggie siblings are looking for her. Her human sister, dad and I are just heartbroken without our sweet pup. I have nothing positive to say about Westside. We have never heard anything good about them and now I know why. I attempted to use them only because they were closest to us and time was critical. I even called our vet today and told them how we were treated. If you live in our area and ever need an animal ER, go anywhere but Westside. The staff at Blue Pearl was amazing, loving and loved on Lulu with us as she was passing. They petted her, stroked her paws and talked to her right along with us. They are what a true animal ER should be and I am so grateful they were there and willing despite how busy they were.” These are your responses from actual Paulding county citizens - as reported on Whats Happening Paulding County Kacie Ignacio from Dallas “This is horrendous… I am SO SORRY for your loss. “ Lynn Tyler Nemzer from Dallas “I'm so sorry

Matthew Holtkamp has only a couple of weeks left to enjoy a pre-elected office life, but there was some official business he had to take care of on Friday night for his soon-to-be new position. He had to be sworn in. New commissioners typically hold their swearing in ceremonies sometime in the December before their term officially begins. This time it was Holtkamp's turn, after he defeated outgoing Commissioner Marlene Fosque in last month's general election, and the ceremony was held at the Gwinnett County Historic Courthouse. And, in true Gwinnett County commissioner fashion, Holtkamp evoked the often-mentioned “Gwinnett Standard” county mantra as he addressed supporters at the swearing-in ceremony. Holtkamp will be the only Republican on the five-member county commission when he takes office in January. In his post-swearing-in remarks, he thanked the Gwinnett Republican Party executive board for supporting his campaign. But, Holtkamp did get support from across the political aisle at his swearing-in ceremony. Two Democrats who will soon be Holtkamp's colleagues on the county commission, Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson and Commissioner Kirkland Carden, attended the ceremony. Hendrickson and Holtkamp are both members of the Rotary Club of Gwinnett. As Holtkamp addressed attendees at the ceremony, he recalled moving to Gwinnett from Ohio in the 1980's and having to learn how things worked in Georgia, and also some of he local vernacular. A roller coaster of a first half and Georgia's highest scoring state championship football game ever left the Mill Creek High School players both exhausted and jubilant Saturday. They had just made history in multiple ways on a foggy night with misting rain at Georgia State's Center Parc Stadium. The Hawks won the first state football title in school history with a 70-35 rout of previously unbeaten Carrollton, giving Gwinnett its third straight state champion in Class AAAAAAA. Their 70 points broke the state record for most points scored by one team in a state final according to Georgia High School Football Daily records, besting the old mark of 62 set by Valdosta in 1971 and Warner Robins in 2020. Mill Creek finished 14-1, pushing past the school record for wins in a season by a game. It wrapped up a completely dominant postseason with another convincing victory, putting an exclamation point on a run that featured the Hawks dealing out the mercy rule of a running clock to their first four playoff opponents. The showdown of nationally ranked teams — Mill Creek is Number 18 by MaxPreps and Carrollton is Number 20, while Carrollton is Number 20 and Mill Creek is Number 24 by USA Today — featured a first half of each team landing shots with the big play. Two of the Hawks' early scoring plays were on special teams that had them up 28-14 after the first quarter. Carrollton which hadn't allowed more than 28 points in a game all season, never got the deficit to single digits after the first quarter despite 529 yards and five touchdowns from freshman quarterback Julian Lewis. The Hawks hit the 70-point mark with a nine-play, six-minute scoring drive, set up by Jamal Anderson's fourth-down sack. Kevin Mitchell's 48-yard TD run with 1:36 left in the fourth quarter capped the scoring and made Mill Creek the eighth Gwinnett school to win a state football title in Georgia's largest class, joining Brookwood, Collins Hill, Grayson, Norcross, North Gwinnett, Parkview and Peachtree Ridge. Gwinnett high school football continued its impressive run with Mill Creek's championship. At least one Gwinnett team has won a state football title in 15 of the past 17 seasons. A Navy veteran who went on to work for the Veterans Administration and participated in several community groups has received a recognition from the Daughters of the American Revolution. The Philadelphia Winn Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently presented a DAR America 250 Commendation to Terry Edward Pyatt Manning. Manning was recognized for roles he filled in the the armed forces and Veterans Administration as well as roles he filled in the community. He served in the Navy from 1967 until 1970 and left the military as a petty officer first class. He later went on to work for the Veterans Administration, where he eventually became the auditor-in-charge. But, he was also president of the Friends of the National Archives Southeast Region, is a member of the Gwinnett Historical Society, co-founded the Gwinnett County Genealogy Study Group and gives lectures on early American history, which he does while wearing colonial attire. Manning, who is married to Philadelphia Winn chapter member Virginia Manning, is also involved with groups that work with the DAR. He is a member of the Button Gwinnett Sons of the American Revolution, the Atlanta Sons of the American Revolution, the Georgia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and is the Senior President of the Allen Howard Society of the Children of the American Revolution. Northside Hospital will be building more of the new tower at its Gwinnett campus right away than previously announced, in a move that will make the Lawrenceville site the largest campus in the Northside Hospital system in 2025. Officials from Northside said the Georgia Department of Community Health gave them the green light on Wednesday to add seven more stories onto the construction that is gearing up for the new inpatient tower that is being built at the Gwinnett campus. That will put the tower at 17 stories, which is the height it was always intended to eventually be, all in one go at construction rather than in phases as was previously planned. It will add 146 patient beds at the hospital, and put Northside Gwinnett at a total of 696 beds. The tower, when completed, is expected to compete for the title of being the tallest building in Gwinnett County, at a height of 257 feet and six inches. Its closest competitor for the title, local officials had said in the past, would be the Sonesta Gwinnett Place Atlanta hotel, which has at least 15 floors. Getting the permission to build additional seven floors means the tower will not be built in stages, as had been the plan at one time. With state authorization granted, Northside officials now only need the blessing of the Federal Aviation Administration — since the hospital is near Briscoe Field and the tower will be more than 200 feet tall — to proceed. The hospital system has already filed paperwork to get the FAA's blessing, and is expecting an answer soon. When former Gwinnett County Commission Chairwoman Charlotte Nash was a young girl growing up in the Harbins area, farming was still king. She recalls a time when eastern Gwinnett was truly rural — even though it's less developed that other parts of Gwinnett today, Nash is quick to point that she does not believe it's really rural anymore. When she thinks of the area being rural, she thinks of the farmland that used to be widespread in eastern Gwinnett. In fact, she remembers there being more farmland than forests in the Dacula area back in the day. Nash was one of several dignitaries, including Governor Brian Kemp and current Gwinnett Commission Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson, who attended Rowen's groundbreaking ceremony, which was held on a field on Drowning Creek Road on Friday. The 2,000-acre research-oriented “knowledge community” mixed-use development, located between Dacula and the Gwinnett-Barrow county line, has been in the planning stages since it was first announced in 2020, in Nash's final year in office. It is expected to take decades to build out, but it is projected to create at least 100,000 new jobs in eastern Gwinnett, according to Rowen Foundation President Mason Ailstock. The agricultural innovation aspect of Rowen in particular will likely have a major impact across the state since, according to the Georgia Department of Economic Development, agribusiness is the state's largest industry. Buford's wrestling team won the 18-team Aaron Kirkland Invitational on Saturday. The tournament honors former Buford wrestler Kirkland, who died in an October 2021 car accident. The Wolves finished ahead of runner-up Rockmart, third-place Mount Pisgah, fourth-place Creekview and fifth-place Etowah. Buford's D.J. Clarke, Rylan Ibold, Kieron McCormack, Drew Gorman, Gavin Pope and Aaron Riner won weight class titles. #GwinnettDailyPost #Georgia #LocalNews -- - - The Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast is local news for Lawrenceville, Norcross, Duluth, and all of Gwinnett County. Buford came into Friday's game with a perfect record, ranked No. 1 in the state and a consensus top-10 team nationally, and winner of three straight state championships. Walton was not intimidated. The Raiders prepared this week as if Buford was just another opponent and left Tom Riden Stadium with a 42-35 victory in the second round of the Class AAAAAAA state playoffs. The win sent shockwaves far beyond the Buford and Walton communities — but not as much on the Raiders' sideline. Walton will return to the road for the quarterfinals next week, facing another unbeaten foe in Carrollton. Of Buford's 11 wins this season, eight of them were decided by more than 20 points, but that did not faze Walton's will to play spoiler. Walton will play Friday night on the road against Carrollton. About half a dozen local families that grew a little larger this year via adoption celebrated the milestone Saturday at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church. The event was hosted by the Cobb County office of the Division of Family and Children Services, the state organization that provides child protective services, foster care and adoption. Along with a breakfast of chicken and waffles, Cobb DFCS provided photographers for the families to take Thanksgiving portraits, and gave each family a $25 Walmart gift card to have the photos printed. Deputy Director of Cobb DFCS Carmen Nance organized the event to honor adopting families. She said Cobb has 436 children in foster care. According to Nance, the county's foster system needs community support — more foster families, and more resources for those families. Nance said it is important for children in foster care to stay within their home community if possible, so they can maintain some of their social network through friends, school, and church. Nance said the Cobb County Foster Adoptive Parent Association is a good resource for those looking to foster, adopt, or support the local foster system. MUST Ministries is expecting 10,000 runners this Thanksgiving Day as the nonprofit celebrates 20 years of racing against poverty with the MDJ Gobble Jog. Since 2002, families from all over the world have come together on Marietta Square to run in the Marietta Daily Journal MUST Ministries Gobble Jog, one of the largest Thanksgiving Day races in the Southeast. The annual event raises funds for those in need who come to MUST for housing, food, job assistance, clothing and more. This year, MUST will help more than 60,000 people across eight metro Atlanta counties find a second chance at hope. Runners and walkers choose between a 10K, 5K, 1K, Tot Trot (50 yards) or being a phantom runner. For more information, visit gobblejog.org or mustministries.org. The Mount Paran Christian cheerleading team recently won its 11th straight state championship in competition cheer held at the Macon Centreplex. The team faced not only a new competitive class when the Eagles moved up to Class AA, but also extended its streak with a new coaching staff led by McKenzie Rutan, Shelley Ray, and Nikki Hamilton. To date, the squad is the only team in Georgia, in any classification, to have won 11 consecutive cheer titles. The streak began with the 2012-13 season. Competition cheerleading is acknowledged as an Olympic sport and has been recognized by the GHSA/NCAA for more than 25 years. The cheer squad holds the most consecutive state championships for any sport in Cobb County, and is closing in on the Walton girls tennis team's mark of 13 titles in 14 years, and 16 championships in 18 years, between 2001 and 2018. This 11th consecutive title also puts the competition cheer team second in most consecutive titles in the state in any sport behind Jefferson High School wrestling, which won every year from 2001 to 2019. Five interceptions and a lost fumble led to five Rockmart touchdowns in North Cobb Christian's 63-10 loss at Rockmart in the second round of the Class AA state playoffs Friday night. Coming off of a thrilling 14-6 win in the first round, No. 10 North Cobb Christian (10-2) was hit with costly mistakes on offense against the Number 7-ranked Yellow Jackets to lead to an early exit in the playoffs. The Eagles went into halftime down 28-10 after getting some traction on a nine-play, 76-yard scoring drive late in the second quarter that ended with quarterback Matty Go finding Skyler Parker down the left sideline for an 18-yard touchdown pass. When they came back from the break, that momentum deteriorated quickly. Rockmart scored on the first possession of the second half as Cam Ferguson capped an 8-play, 70-yard drive with a 22-yard touchdown run. Ty'Shawn Johnson intercepted Go two plays into North Cobb Christian's possession, leading to a short field and a 15-yard touchdown run by Rockmart quarterback JD Davis a short time later. Go finished 9-of-16 for 114 yards, all of which came in the first half as the senior was 0-for-4 in the second half, each time getting picked off. The Eagles were held to 75 yards rushing for a total of 189 yards of offense. Rockmart, meanwhile, had 304 yards with 291 coming on the ground. Davis and Ferguson each had two touchdowns while Brent Washington scored two touchdowns, one on a 2-yard run and another on a 60-yard interception return, both in the second quarter. Marietta used bookstore Book Nook will close, according to a letter written by the store's owners. Before shuttering, the Marietta Book Nook on Roswell Road is discounting nearly everything in its stock by 50% every Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the rest of November. The store will not be open on other days. The letter does not specify an end date for the sale or an ultimate closing date. Trade credits will still be accepted at the other Book Nook locations in Decatur and Lilburn. Some items are exempt from the 50% off discount: comics, graphic novels, and premium items, which will be identified by a star sticker. Everything else is half off. The Book Nook had been temporarily closed to customers for about a month because of a change in management, according to the store's manager, Alexa Dunford. Dunford was not sure what caused the change. During that time, staff have been reorganizing the shelves to prepare for the sale. The book store has been a staple of Marietta's used book market since 1973. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County. During the weekend, a 40-year-old mother was arrested for allegedly stabbing her children while her house was on fire. Paulding County emergency services received a call about a domestic disturbance and fire at 776 Woodwind Drive in Rockmart on June 24 at 9:19 p.m. A "female who was inside the home attempted to stab its occupants," said the Paulding County Sheriff's Office. Several law enforcement agencies assisted, including the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the State Fire Marshal, Paulding County Fire Investigators, and Paulding County Detectives, in extinguishing the fire and rescuing the occupants. Seven juveniles were found inside the home, and two of them - a 3-year-old and a 9-month-old - were pronounced dead. According to reports, they suffered apparent stab wounds. The hospital also treated three other children, ages 5, 9, and 11. A 14-year-old and a 16-year-old did not appear to be injured, according to the Paulding County Sheriff's Office. The 5-year-old died as a result of injuries, according to the statement. Nine-year-old is in critical but stable condition. +++ ON IT'S HEAD +++ Have you ever heard the term "turn it on its head?" What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear that phrase? For me, it's a little boy being help upside down with his or her head to the ground and I think, "wow, they've been turned upside down." Some kids love this. They'll be laughing-their-heads-off thinking it is so funny until the blood flushes their face. It's unfortunate that we can no longer look at something like that and think it's all being done in jest. Strange things. Strange people. However, I like to see when an idea that we've held onto for so long, is completely revamped and replaced by better ideas. Would it be true for you as well? In this episode, you'll hear how one business owner and leader, our guest Zack Thomas, has taken the term "employee turnover" and turn it around from being something one fears, to something one plans towards. You'll have to listen to hear what it is I mean by saying that. +++++++++++++++++++ ZACK THOMAS' BIO: He is an entrepreneur, published author, coach, and speaker.
