But once he got to Pittsburgh, he became one of the National League's most reliable pitchers. He played with Pittsburgh for four years before being traded to the Brooklyn Dodgers, where he became one of the best pitchers in baseball - period. His 1951 season, when he went 22-3 with a 3.04 ERA, is considered to be one of the best in history. Overall, Roe won 127 games. A four-time All-Star, Roe helped the Dodgers to three National League pennants and went 2-1 with an ERA of just 2.54 over the course of three World Series against the New York Yankees. Yet, as good as Roe was, his career is largely overlooked. On this episode of Sports' Forgotten Heroes, I take a look back at Roe's journey to the Majors, the obstacles he had to overcome, and his near brush with death with my guest, David Jerome, whose new book, "The Life of A Professional Baseball Great From the Ozarks: Preacher Roe." "If a martian landed in America and set out to determine the nation's official state religion, he would have to conclude it is liberalism, while Christianity and Judaism are prohibited by law. Many Americans are outraged by liberal hostility to traditional religion. However, his GoSkippy Insurance broker said he must remove the stickers to retain coverage. The Christian Legal Centre is now supporting him in his ordeal. European household pets outnumber children Evangelical Focus reports that household pets outnumber children in Europe.  As of 2024, 49 percent of European households owned a pet. Of the 306 million pets in Europe, most were cats followed by dogs and ornamental birds.  By comparison, there are 1.4 million children under the age of 15 in Europe. That means the continent has an average 0.4 children for every pet. In fact, pet dogs now outnumber children in 15 European countries.   Massachusetts legalized killing babies on their birthdays Here in the United States, Massachusetts legalized the killing of unborn babies up to the point of birth on August 10th. Democrat Governor Maura Healey, a lesbian who is faux married to a woman and identifies as a Catholic, signed the abortion bill into law on Monday. The measure allows late-term abortions for any reason. Listen to how Governor Healy asserts that killing a baby is “healthcare” at her press conference. HEALY: “I promise that no matter what Donald Trump or Republicans in Congress, or the Supreme Court does, we're going to continue to make sure that women and families have access to the healthcare that they need right here in Massachusetts. “We know that protecting abortion access and reproductive healthcare has been under fire. We saw it when the Supreme Court overturned Roe in the Dobbs decision back in 2022, the first time a court has ever taken away a right that was given. “We've seen it as Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress continue to pass anti-abortion legislation, including extreme abortion bans. Today, one in three women in America live in a state with an abortion ban. “President Trump's new attorney general, Todd Blanche, over the weekend, said that overturning Roe v. Wade should be made ‘permanent' in every state. That's what we're up against.” Massachusetts is now the 11th state, plus the District of Columbia, to allow abortions up to birth. (Massachusetts joins Alaska, Colorado, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon and Vermont, according to FoxNews.com). Isaiah 59:7 says, “Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood; their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths.” ​Trump recommends fewer child vaccines & greater parental authority On August 10th, President Donald Trump signed an executive order on childhood vaccines, recommending fewer ones and that they be spread out over time instead of injecting multiple vaccines in one sitting. MILLER: “Because of your courage and leadership, Mr. President, millions of parents all over America today are breathing an enormous sigh of relief. I say this as the parent of young children myself. “Millions and millions of parents feel they've been pressured when their children are just weeks out of the hospital to take five shots, six shots, seven shots -- all at once. They're told it'll be normal. Your kid will have a fever of 103 [degrees] for three or four days. Your kid will stop eating for a week. Your kid's going to change all their sleeping. Don't worry; it's totally fine. It's totally normal. Nobody has studied it. Nobody's looked at it. Nobody's thought about it. “The pressure from the pharmaceutical industry and from aspects of the medical industry to pump your kids full of shots days after birth, with no understanding of the long-term consequences, has been a medical travesty.” In addition, the order recommends 11 immunizations for children, down from 18. The order also calls on states to protect parental authority and religious freedom in vaccine decisions.   Specifically, President Trump said in the order, “It is the policy of my administration that federal programs and funding should support maximal parental choice over childhood vaccines.” America's oil reserves dropped to half capacity America's oil reserves have fallen to the lowest level in over 40 years. The U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve dropped below 300 million barrels last week. That's less than half of its total capacity and the lowest level since 1983.  In March, President Donald Trump authorized the release of up to 172 million barrels from the reserve in response to the war with Iran.  Churchgoers who attend Bible studies have highest discipleship scores And finally, Lifeway Research reports churchgoers who attend Bible studies have the highest discipleship scores. The discipleship scores highlight characteristics consistently present in the lives of believers who are progressing in their spiritual maturity. The record backs the frustration. Roe was never codified when Democrats had the chance. Medicare for All has been a talking point for 25 years. The federal minimum wage is still 7.25 an hour, under 15,000 dollars a year. Six or seven Democrats reliably cross over on defense authorization and funding bills, and then Chuck Schumer writes a letter. Nicolle Wallace made the point that stuck with Hawk: elected Democrats have spent decades treating their base as captive, because that base will never vote Republican. Then there is Hasan Piker, quoted out of context and never named on air. Hawk's standing dare to Morning Joe, Jake Tapper, and Dana Bash is to book him and have the argument directly. That mechanism is the Comstock Act, an 1873 federal anti-obscenity statute that criminalized mailing contraceptives and abortion-related materials. It has gone unenforced for a century but remains on the books. Hawk walks through how, per the call, Blanche pledged to stop physicians in states where abortion is legal from mailing medication to patients in states that have banned it, and argues the Comstock Act is the only existing statutory tool that would let him attempt it. He lays out the stakes: of roughly 1.1 million abortions in the US last year, about 65 percent were medication abortions, meaning several hundred thousand a year could be affected. Hawk notes the call was hosted by the White House Faith Office, recorded by the group Intercessors for America, and included a request for journalists to hang up. Senator Richard Blumenthal raised it before the committee vote, calling Blanche a zealot seeking to advance the president's position against reproductive rights. Hawk closes on what a nationwide effort against mailed medication, and potentially contraception, could mean. On Everyday Injustice Episode 336, host David Greenwald speaks with Valena Beety, a nationally recognized wrongful convictions litigator, former federal prosecutor and law professor, about how stereotypes surrounding gender and sexuality can contribute to innocent people being convicted and imprisoned. Beety, who has spent roughly 15 years representing people challenging wrongful convictions, explains how her own experience as a prosecutor led her to question whether the criminal legal system consistently protects victims, survivors or public safety. Beety focuses on the intersection between wrongful convictions and the criminalization of women and LGBTQ+ people. She argues that prosecutors can exploit longstanding stereotypes portraying queer people as dangerous, deceptive or deviant, particularly when those assumptions are combined with faulty forensic evidence or tunnel vision about who committed a crime. Beety points to cases in which women and queer defendants were prosecuted even when she argues no underlying crime occurred, illustrating how identity can become part of the prosecution's theory of guilt. The conversation also explores Beety's new book, “Pink Crime: Fighting Against the Criminalization of Motherhood, Pregnancy, and Queer Identity,” which examines what she describes as an accelerating criminalization of women and queer people following the Supreme Court's reversal of Roe v. Wade. Beety discusses women investigated following miscarriages, stillbirths or suspected abortions, along with the treatment of pregnant women behind bars and transgender people in prison. She describes inadequate medical care for incarcerated pregnant women, women giving birth without timely assistance and transgender prisoners being placed in prolonged segregation rather than housed in environments appropriate to their circumstances. Beety also discusses cases involving discredited forensic evidence, including bite-mark testimony, and her earlier book, “Manifesting Justice: Wrongly Convicted Women Reclaim Their Rights.” Throughout the conversation, she emphasizes that proving innocence does not necessarily mean someone will quickly — or ever — leave prison, noting that reversing an existing conviction can be substantially more difficult than obtaining one. Despite those barriers, Beety ends on a measure of optimism, arguing that recognizing how women, pregnant people and LGBTQ+ people can be targeted through stereotypes may create common ground for challenging wrongful convictions and broader abuses within the criminal legal system.

Access to medication abortion in the years since Covid and the fall of Roe v. Wade has completely reshaped the abortion access landscape in America.“There's this irony that's actually happened,” says Dr. Angel Foster, an abortion provider and researcher. “Tragically, 33 to 40 percent of women of reproductive age now have less of a right to an abortion. But access for many people has increased.” Foster is the founder of the Massachusetts Medication Abortion Access Project, a clinic whose work is one major player in why abortions are up. Massachusetts and almost half the states in the US have passed shield laws that legally protect abortion providers. The one Foster operates under allows her to prescribe abortion pills to patients in states with abortion bans.  And while the battleground may be shifting as medication abortions grow more common, the war is far from over. This week on Reveal, we explore post-Roe America through the eyes of three women with three very different missions: Foster, who offers medication abortions nationwide; a courier who risks arrest to stockpile abortion pills for an uncertain future; and a conservative activist whose life's work is trying to stop them both. Since the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization case which overturned Roe v. Wade was decided, there's been an abortion access crisis, an assault on legal precedent for abortion protections, and an opportunity to create a stronger and even more inclusive plan to reproductive autonomy than Roe ever provided. Amy Myrick, Senior Council at the Center for Reproductive Rights, sits down to talk with us about legal trends in federal and state courts in the past four years. Currently, legal cases have been aimed towards medication abortion and telehealth (a lifeline after Dobbs). It is important to remember that legal attacks on abortion have broader implications, including for transgender health and rights (particularly for young people). Increasingly, anti-abortion actors have had to pivot to tactics that are often blatantly anti-democratic.
