In this podcast, HSE Chair Sarah Newton and Professor Cary Cooper, one the world's foremost experts on wellbeing, discuss the importance of working in partnership to prevent work-related stress and to promote good mental health. Amongst other things, the podcast covers HSE's Working Minds campaign, which aims to ensure psychological risks are treated the same as physical ones, that employers recognise their legal duty to prevent work related stress to support good mental health in the workplace, and that they have the tools they need to do achieve this. For more information on the campaign visit ‘Working Minds' PODCAST TRANSCRIPT Mick Ord (Host): A warm welcome to you whenever and wherever you are listening to this Health and Safety Executive podcast from me, Mick Ord, and our soon-to-be-announced guests. This podcast is the second in a series designed to help you to make your life a little easier, both in work and maybe even spilling over into your personal life, you never know. The Health and Safety Executive is committed to improving the health and safety of workers in Great Britain. And today we'll be focusing on an issue that affects all industry sectors, work-related stress, and its potential impact on mental health. In 2020/21, more than 800,000 people suffered from work-related stress, depression, or anxiety. The impact on workers and businesses is considerable. A recent report by Deloitte estimates that the total annual cost of poor mental health to employers has increased by 25% since 2019, costing UK employers up to 56 billion pounds a year. 56 billion! Last year, on the 16th of November, HSE launched its Working Minds campaign to encourage, promote, and support good mental health in the workplace and prevent work-related stress. And today we'll talk about the successes of the campaign, what still needs to be done and why this topic is still so important. Joining us today is Sarah Newton, Chair of the Health and Safety Executive. In addition, Sarah is currently a non-executive director of the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust. Prior to taking over the chair in 2020, Sarah's experience includes serving as a director for American Express Europe, Age Concern, and the independent academic think tank, the International Longevity Centre. Sarah was also an MP for ten years, and served as a minister in the Department of Work and Pensions, responsible for HSE and Health and Work Unit. And we're delighted to also have with us Professor Cary Cooper, one of the world's foremost experts on wellbeing, and a 50th anniversary professor of Organisational Psychology and Health at the Manchester Business School. He's the author or editor of over 170 books, has written more than 450 scholarly articles for academic journals, and is a frequent contributor to national newspapers, TV and radio. A big welcome, both. Sarah. First of all, thanks for joining us for the podcast. Now, your Working Minds campaign has just celebrated its first anniversary, so tell us about why you launched a campaign in the first place and what it's achieved.. Sarah Newton: First of all, thank you so much for inviting me on to your podcast this morning, Mick. You know, let's be honest about this. Any one of us can experience stress. It can affect people in different ways and different times, so it's a very prevalent issue. So why did HSE get involved with dealing with this? Well, it's clearly our mission to prevent work-related ill health, and as you said from those startling statistics in your introduction, many people are experiencing stress in the workplace, and we know it's the number one reason why people will have an absence from work is. So we were looking at a new strategy last year. We've developed a new strategy, which is protecting people in places and five strategic objectives. One of them clearly to reduce work-related ill health, with a particular focus on stress because it affects so many people. And we chose to launch this campaign because HSE, while we have a huge amount of expertise, we don't have all the answers. And we really wanted to work in partnership with a wide range of organisations who together, we could bring the big difference that we want to see. It's all about working in partnership, collaborating with others, making sure that employers have the knowledge, the tools that they need to really support their workers to prevent work-related stress and ill health. Mick Ord (Host): As we've heard the figures on people taking absence from work because of work-related stress have really increased over the past couple of years. What are your thoughts about that, Sarah? Sarah Newton: Well, I think a part of it, or probably a very large part of it, is to do with the fact as a society, we've been far more prepared to talk about mental ill health. There's been a huge amount of really positive work to de stigmatise mental ill health, which of course includes stress and anxiety and depression. And so I think as a result of that, people are more prepared to acknowledge that they're suffering from mental ill health. Mick Ord (Host): Professor Cooper, I guess that you'd echo everything that Sarah said there about the Working Minds campaign? Prof. Cary Cooper: Oh yeah, absolutely. I mean, HSE has always been at the forefront looking at stress at work. It was the only country actually, 20 years ago, set up the management standards for stress at work. I was involved in that 20 years ago. And it's gotten worse, a lot of the problems. That was really ahead of its time, but times have changed. We've had a financial crisis since then. We've had a pandemic. We have a cost of living crisis. We're about to enter a recession. This has really become even more significant and more important than ever before. And the HSE, by revising the management standards, by getting involved in this Working Minds campaign is really quite important. And by the way, it's not just the UK. Every developed country has between 50% and 60% of its long-term absence due to stress, anxiety, and depression. It's not just the UK. This is a kind of global problem, particularly in the developed world. Mick Ord (Host): Sarah, what are the next steps for Working Minds then? Sarah Newton: So Working Minds is a collaboration. It's a partnership of a number of organisations. We've already doubled the number of organisations we work with. We're so grateful to our partners. So some of our founding partners such as Acas, Ceca, Mind, Mates in Mind. Now we're working with different industry sectors, so working a lot with their representative bodies across a huge range of industries. And a huge benefit to us of that is to draw on their expertise, but also to reach out to their members. You know, big companies will often have HR departments, they'll have investments into all types of health and wellbeing type programs, but small and medium sized companies don't always have those resources available for their staff. So it's very important that we really reach out to every business right across the UK and provide them with some tools that really will make the difference. Most employers will understand that it's their responsibility to think about the physical risks, the physical health concerns that people can have at work, But what they don't often realise is they have an equal responsibility to the psychological wellbeing of their staff. So part of our campaign is to remind employers of those legal responsibilities. They do have a duty to do risk assessments of their employees for both physical and psychological risks to ill health, and then to provide them with the toolkits to enable them to assess the risk and then manage and mitigate the risk. And by working with so many different employers, really drawing on their experience what works in their workplaces. So an element of this is going to be peer-to-peer support. So businesses say in the agricultural sector, they come, share good experiences together on what works for them. That's a very different sector than say the NHS or working in an advanced manufacturing location. So while the principles are the same, the applications and probably the examples of good practice will be different. And so we'll be wanting to build on the huge success of the first year, have more people become partners, more people become champions, access the materials that are there so that they can take some really practical actions in their workplaces to improve the health and wellbeing of their staff. Mick Ord (Host): And as you've already said, it's not just big companies with HR departments, is it? It's the small, maybe a company with 20 employees or something like that. Sarah Newton: You know how right you are. But a vast majority of people in the UK are employed in small and medium size organisations. And actually recent data will show a lot of people are employed in, you know, what might loosely be called the gig economy, or platform workers. And platform workers, may be just part of their employment. Perhaps they've got a job with an employer, but then they actually supplement that income as a platform worker, and those companies are not in day-to-day contact with their employees, with the people that they are working with to actually deliver the services through these platforms. Now they really need to think hard about how they are going to reach out to those employers and make sure that they are undertaking their risk assessments, so to prevent people having physical or mental ill health at work. Mick Ord (Host): Cary, you wanted to come in there? Prof. Cary Cooper: Yeah, Sarah's really hit a really important issue. A lot of the bigger companies since the financial crisis of 2008-2015, have really treated stress at work and wellbeing much more seriously, much more strategically. There are now directors of health and wellbeing in many of the big companies and public sector bodies. Indeed, the NHS have. Every hospital in the NHS has a non-executive director on its board who's responsible for employee health and wellbeing. The real issue, and I think why this campaign is a really important one is for the SME sector, small and medium sized enterprises, because they don't have big HR departments, chief medical officers, and so on. Five years ago, I founded the National Forum for Health and Wellbeing at Work, made up of 40 global employers from Rolls Royce and BT and Microsoft, it goes on and on, BBC and so on, including the NHS Executive. Those people are treating this as a strategic issue. They have directors of health and wellbeing. They're increasingly getting somebody on the board who's responsible for health and wellbeing at work because we have to hold organisations accountable for ensuring that employee health and wellbeing, that stress and mental health is treated properly. That they are actually looking at the data on it, the metrics, which tells them that things aren't going so well, or that they do metrics to make sure that they understand what good looks like in terms of an employer in terms of mental wellbeing of their staff. But it's the SME sector that really needs quite a lot of help. The gig economy that Sarah talked about, I think is really important. And the more we get this out and the more we get the big employers, by the way, to help their supply chain, I think that's the way we're going to get the SME sector, Sarah. I think we've got to get them down to the supply chain or where they're actually physically located, so they have a plant in a particular area and there are other SMEs in that area. You know, we have to help because the big boys have the infrastructure. They have the HR departments, occupational health, and they know and they understand what the HSE is providing and what other people are providing in this space. And that's going to be, I think, our big challenge because our productivity, aside from anything else, our productivity per capita is pretty damn poor. We're set bottom of the G 7 on productivity per capita, tied with Italy. And we're 17th in the G 20 on productivity per capita. So it's health of employees, but it's about our nation. It's about the productivity of our country. And if we create the right kind of cultures where there's wellbeing and people feel valued and trusted and can work flexibly and have good line managers, we're going to make a real difference. Sarah Newton: Yeah. I think what I'd really, really like to pick up on that last point, Cary, it's not only the right thing to do. That companies have a legal obligation. But it's actually in their interests. The data that you get from large organisations will very clearly say for every pound they spend, they get it back 4, 5, 6 times in terms of the productivity of their staff. So there's been a lot of work done by Deloitte and others, which show the return on investment to companies that really invest, or organisations that really invest in the health and wellbeing of their staff. So I think that is a key message that we want to enable to get out. And it's often, I think, more easily received if it's company to company. People in your sector actually making that case rather than a regulator. But we want to enable that message to get across by creating the opportunities for employers to share this type of economic information as well as all the practical things that they're doing in their workplaces to really improve the health and wellbeing of their staff. And one of the things you touched on which I couldn't agree with more is about training line managers. They are absolutely critical. I agree with you. We certainly see at HSE and our duty holders, especially as a result of the pandemic, a lot of focus in the boardroom on health and safety and wellbeing of their staff. and a genuine commitment to do the right thing. But enabling that to happen in the organisation really requires line managers to be trained and well supported. Because without that support, it can be quite a scary conversation. You know, if somebody comes to you and wants to talk to you about things that are really distressing them and causing them stress and anxiety in the work – and that could be partly related to what's happening at home, things outside the workplace., As you were talking about though, the huge financial pressures that many people are under at the moment. It's not always an easy conversation to hear if you haven't been trained on how to hear that conversation and how to respond and understand that your organisation will support you in enabling you to do your job. To either signpost that person to some more professional support, or to give you the ability to support them in the way that you and the employer want to. So it requires, you know, quite a lot of effort and support for organisations into their line managers so that they can have those conversations. Prof. Cary Cooper: It's interesting, Mick, what happened when we formed the National Forum for Health and Wellbeing five years ago. it's made up of HR directors, chief medical officers, directors of health and wellbeing of all these major companies, public sector bodies. On our first meeting, they said the big issue for us – this is five years ago, this is pre pandemic – our big issue is people tend to get promoted to managerial roles or recruited to those roles based on their technical skills, not their people skills. Our big issue is that we don't have the cadre of managers all the way up the system and every sector where there's parity between their technical skills and their social skills. And so the EQ – the emotional intelligence of our line managers is really fundamental in creating a culture. Because listen, all of us in the workplace have a boss in our careers. That boss values you, listens to you, enables you to work flexibly if that's what you want. Understands what's going on in your personal life as well, because that impacts your work and treats you like a human being. Then that's going to create an atmosphere and create a culture where wellbeing will thrive and stress will not thrive. And so I think our challenge here, and by the way, the big companies and big public sector bodies know this. We've got to get the message across to the SME sector, to the gig economy, to the third sector, and that's why Working Minds means a lot to me because those are the organisations that we really have to get, you know, get on board on this and for them to totally understand. Because to be honest with you, they employ more people than the private sector. The SMEs employ more people than the big boys do. Mick Ord (Host): Have you got some examples of the kind of impact work-related stress has on workers and the actual impact it's had on their lives? Just give us a real life example if you could. Prof. Cary Cooper: Oh, there's so many examples. I'll tell you what is a big example. I hate to make this kind of contemporary, but I'm going to do it anyway – bullying at work has always been a big issue. Where we have toxic managers who bully people – command and control types. That's very damaging. I did a big study many years ago with the CBI, the TUC, there was 80 organisations in all. We looked at nearly a million workers, and in depth five and a half thousand. Almost every sector was involved in this, because we were trying to identify what the impact of bullying was, what the extent of it was, and we found that really at any moment in time, 10% of people are being bullied at work. By bullying at work, it means persistent devaluing of people. It's not physical bullying, it's psychological bullying. And the impact is that, the mental health impact is profound. And we are looking at all– by the way, they're in every sector from the NHS ,to universities, to IT companies, you name it. It's not just in what you think is the really fast moving high octane businesses, It's everywhere. And therefore that goes back again to an issue that we really have to tackle. By the way, companies now do have policies on bullying at work. Which they didn't have, and that followed the kind of studies we do, but people are affected by the workplace a lot. We can do things about that, and that's the important thing. When we're recruiting people for jobs now, particularly managerial roles, we have to ensure there's parity between their people skills and their technical skills. That will help not just bullying, but just bad management, frankly. And that will help create a culture because bosses do create cultures. Mick Ord (Host): And in terms of the way in which workplace culture has changed over the years, Sarah, are we in a better place now than we may have been 20 years ago? Or do you think there's still a huge amount of work to be done, particularly in relation to what Cary was talking about there? Sarah Newton: Oh goodness. What a question That is Mick, that's quite a long perspective, 20 years, isn't it? And all workplaces. I would say since my time at HSE over the last couple of years and really reflecting on the COVID pandemic experience, listening to people at HSE who have been inspectors and with the organisation for say, 20, 30 years. What they told me was it was a really positive response of all the different businesses that we've been in touch with and supported over the pandemic. They really did want to do the right thing for their employers. You know, big, small, all the different sizes of business. We were supporting all sorts of business at which we don't normally regulate to enable them to carry on providing the essential goods and services that we all needed during the pandemic to enable their staff to go to work as safely as they possibly could. And what they told me was, They really felt that employers were trying to do the right thing. There was a high degree of engagement, and we really found when we were doing spot checks, you know, high degrees of compliance with the advice that was put out for employers. And I think as Cary and others have reflected the. Because of the pandemic. There's just a heightened sense amongst the leaders of small companies, medium companies in the boardrooms of the big companies about the importance of the health and wellbeing of their employees. It's just the right thing to do. It makes good business sense, and what I want to do is use that as a springboard to really make further progress. Because while that may be the case that there is a greater awareness. Certainly looking at the data, the amount of people who are reporting that they are being ill at work, stress at work is causing them to be ill and they're having to take a day off work, those numbers are all going in the wrong direction. And you know, it's a very significant problem. So I do believe that it's the culture of an organisation that is the most important thing to change. It is about leadership. Whether, you know, you are the boss of 10 people, 20 people, or 20,000 people. You as the boss set the tone, you set the priorities for your organisation. And I know that part of our campaign is very much about that culture change and enabling leaders at all levels of organisations to have the tools, to have the information, to be able to develop that culture change. And just so I get a quick plug in here, Mick, I mean, there's a newsletter, there is a campaign microsite, people can join up, become champions, sign up to the newsletters. They will be given free information about what they can do. And as the campaign grows, as really it's going to be a movement that develops, there'll be sharing of good examples, sharing of good practice. So it's going to be an ongoing set of information and tools that people could use to help them to, you know, create better workplaces across the country. Mick Ord (Host): It really is an active contribution towards that, isn't it? Sarah Newton: Yeah. Mick Ord (Host): Cary, what specifically are the signs and symptoms that employees should be looking for in their workforce? Prof. Cary Cooper: Okay, well, there's a word called pressure, and there's a word called stress. So pressure by the way, for most of us, is stimulating and motivating, but when pressure exceeds our ability to cope, then that's stress. And the dividing line, normally, when you know you're getting close to going from the pressure zone into the stress zone, is usually behaviour change. So if you're a line manager and you observe your employee who normally has a good sense of humour, is really active, participates in team meetings actively. And all of a sudden they're more withdrawn, more angry, more negative and that's not the way they normally were, that's the first sign. So behaviour change is the first sign that you've gone from the pressure zone into the stress zone. Then you start getting the symptoms, the physical symptoms of it: lack of sleep, constant headaches, health changes as well. You start drinking more, smoking more. A whole range of issues. And those signs are really important to observe. But if you can get it early, it's like anything in the health arena, isn't it? The earlier you can identify the behavioural change in a human being. So if I'm walking down at Manchester Business School and somebody says to me "Cary, you haven't been yourself the last several months, is something wrong?" that should be an indication to me that something is wrong. That my behaviour's being perceived by other people as having changed quite dramatically. And that's because I'm now under stress, not under just the normal everyday positivities of pressure. Because pressure is kind of stimulating. You know, we all like a bit of that in our job. And you really have to then identify what the issue is that's driving that. And again, if you have a good boss who listens to you or a good work colleague who listens to you, or you don't necessarily need an EAP – an employee assistance program, counseling services. Many, almost all businesses have them, I think they're great. They do work. I did an evaluation for the HSE incidentally many, many years ago. Of all the EAPs in the UK, HSE has been part of my life, it looks like! My career life for so many years! But I did, I was commissioned to do a study of all the EAPs many years ago to look at them. How effective are they? And they are very effective. But the important thing is they help the individual, but they don't change the organisation culture. And that's why this kind of a campaign the HSE are doing and have always been involved in from 20 years ago with our management standards, is let's change the culture. Let's do prevention. EAP helps the individual cope with the problem they already have. And that's fine. And we need that. That's a part of the arsenal, the mental health arsenal that we need to have. But it would be really nice if we can start preventing some of this in the first place so we didn't have to do remedial work and treatment like EAPs and other things. Sarah Newton: Well I couldn't agree more. And the campaign is all about prevention by raising awareness amongst employers. And we do have, as part of the toolkit, a stress assessment tool that organisations can use because I absolutely agree with Cary. It's about identifying in your organisation, whatever the size of it, what is causing the stress in the workplace? You know, as Cary says, you can be really quite exciting to be in an environment where you feel that pressure to get things done, and lots of people like challenging environments. but when it tips over into causing stress in the workplace, the toolkit is there to help organisations identify where it's happening and what is driving it so they can look more systemically at what they can do differently. I mean, there are some really simple recent examples which have got quite a lot of media attention around saying to staff We don't want you to be looking at your emails, for example, beyond a certain time. I mean, not everyone can do this, but there's quite a lot of blurring of the lines between work and home going on in the workplace today. And so that in itself can cause stress because people aren't certain what their bosses are expecting of them to their working hours. And so some simple measures like that, being very clear that we really value you, we really appreciate you. We want you to have a separation between your work life and your home life and so we don't want you to be switching on your computer, your laptop, or looking at your emails beyond this time.. And then manager's not responding in saying, Look, I noticed you've sent this at a certain hour. That's not my expectation. I'm really happy to respond to this tomorrow. Let's talk about this tomorrow. So simple things like that can make a big difference, but you'll only know if this is an issue or not in your organisation if you undertake the toolkit. If you use the toolkit, you assess whether that's stressful or not, and then reach out. Have those conversations, put things in place, check in. Are they working? Are they having the desired effect? I think Sarah's raised a really interesting point. When my national forum was formed five years ago, the first issue was the line manager. Guess what the second issue was, Sarah? It was email usage. And now we have the Right to Disconnect law in France, Portugal, New Zealand. We have a number of countries doing that. Incidentally, a company was fined 60,000 euros for breaking it. So they actually use it. That means no manager can send an email out of office hours to their subordinates. That means at night, at weekends, or while they're on holiday. I do have a problem with that law in a way, because if we're to work flexibly, how the hell do we work? If you're picking your kids up at 3:30 and want to be with them, read with them, spend time with them, but then at night start to work, and like Volkswagen, you close down the server at 5:30 to try to stop people doing it or you say you can't do your emails at night, we have a problem. But we do need guidelines on the use of emails because it is interfering with people's lives. It's a whole field by the way, and tons of research on it now, called Technostress. You know, things like don't CC in everybody, don't send an email to anybody at on a Friday afternoon. Even if you say as a line manager, I've heard managers say to me, "I send an email, but I tell them not to respond until Monday morning. Well, why send it in the first place? Because they're going to worry about it all weekend. So we really do need simple things like Sarah said. So my national forum came up with a four page document. This is good practice. This is what you don't do to protect people's private lives. Yes. If the company's burning down, there's something going on that's really significant, yes out of office hours, fine. But try not to interfere with people's private life. They need time, They need respite away from the pressures of life because we have a lot of 'em honest. So that's a part of the puzzle. that's a part of the wellbeing puzzle. The line manager. Emails. The culture. Flexible working. All of that creates a strategic response to try to prevent people getting ill and being overloaded. Mick Ord (Host): So finally, Sarah, for people listening, whatever the size of their company, what do you think that they should be doing now to address the issues that we've been talking about today? Sarah Newton: First of all, I would really encourage them to become a champion. So we've got a really good website, which is workright.campaign.gov.uk/workingminds . They'll find loads of free information there. They can sign up to be a champion, and then on an ongoing basis, will get free really useful information. And then start today. Just think about how you can use those five R's in your workplace to reach out to a colleague. to recognise, to listen to their concerns. To respond. Then to reflect on how's that worked, what difference is it making? And then just make it routine. Check in with your colleagues to see how things are going for them. So those simple five R's are things that any one of us can do each day in our workplace. Mick Ord (Host): So Sarah Newton, Chair of the Health and Safety Executive and professor Cary Cooper, thanks a lot for joining us today.

About Sarah Newton-Palmer: "I work as a life and career coach, and senior facilitator, in the field of life transitioning and leadership development. My own career has evolved through several iterations as I have learned and gradually grown into my own skin. I am driven by a love of ideas, like truth, beauty and integrity, living my own path, and constantly striving to achieve more than I thought I was capable of, not just for myself but to be an example for my family. So far it has been a colourful, often exciting and fulfilling journey with many peaks and troughs that have taught me courage, resilience and some wisdom. All this I also hope for my clients and I love seeing people have great personal insights, grow and achieve their own goals." I am joined by Uma Rudd Chia today. Uma is a creative director, best selling author, global keynote speaker, and founder of the Female Idea. Originally from Malaysia, Uma lived worked internationally, and is now based in Singapore. We had the chance of working together years ago and being desk neighbours while working at the advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi in Singapore. We kept in touch during the pandemic lockdown, and asked her if she'd be up for being on the show. I also asked her to pick a topic she’d be interested in chatting about, and she chose space. We exchanged a few messages, and I in turn picked Mindjammer as a game to talk about. Mindjammer is an award winning science-fiction / space opera tabletop roleplaying game by designer and author Sarah Newton. For the more serious gamers who might be listening, just so you know what to expect, we didn't get to play the in this particular conversation, so while I talk about the game system and the setting for a bit, we also go into other tangents pretty quickly. It's my first time adding a video intro and only my second episode with the full episode, any thoughts or comments will be welcome, thank you! Sarah Newton in her own words is something of a maverick. A flamboyant and rebellious character, Sarah has spent a career championing the cause of young people and following her own path from working at Disney World in Florida to being a police officer to working with parents and young people to now flying the flag for creativity and self-expression.If you are a parent or someone who works with young people there is much to learn from Sarah's story.A passion for working with and writing about young people led her to become one of the first parenting coaches in the UK and publish a book on parenting - Help my teenager is an Alien. She went on to feature in a mainstream parenting TV series and working with Fortune 500 companies as an advisor on youth and change. But it hasn't been all plain sailing, a tragic event when a teenager she was working with, in the police force took his own life had a profound effect on her and shaped her subsequent career. She went on to leave her job, home, and husband all at the same time. The apparent dream of a TV series proved to be a huge challenge to her values and beliefs and led to a further pivot in her career as a writer and influencer around 'Teenology".Sarah is now pursuing a career as a social commentator, a decoder of human behaviour and cataylst for changeHer story shows us the power of conviction and navigating adversity by following your own path. You can contact Sarah at sarah@sarahnewton.com Website Listen and share your thoughts and observations with the Turning the Tables Community on Facebook.Episode referencesSuper Better -Jane McGonigalKahlil Gibram Episode credits;Editor and sound engineer: Tim White email: showupnow@gmail.comMusic:Broken Elegance -Unconditionally When I'm gone -LYQWID

Mindjammer has been a favourite of mine since before it came out in its current edition. I read the novel before I knew the game and loved it and now it is my go-to Science Fiction game. And that is because Sarah Newton, as well as being a good friend, is for me the most talented writer and designer out there. Yes… in the world. When Sarah carried out her rather successful Kickstarter campaign, one of the stretch goals was a conversion of the Mindjammer game into the Traveller system. Since I am not an expert on Traveller, I was very curious to know how a game with a system as open as FATE could be converted to a system that is a lot more rules-heavy and relatively restrictive as Traveller. And now you can find out too. Hope you enjoy the show!

Upbeat with Tom Hayes and the UK's Bronte Huskinson and Sarah Newton from the UK discuss their novel, "Never MInd My Thigh Gap" “One ordinary girl, one extraordinary moment” There are three things everyone notices about Alice. 1. Her super-hot rugby boyfriend. 2. Her sophisticated, totally gorgeous best friend. 3. Her very noticeable 38-inch long legs. Alice is tall — just under six feet to be exact — but her self-esteem couldn’t be smaller. When her relationship starts wavering, Alice’s perfectly beautiful best friend somehow convinces her to join a modelling competition, “for a confidence boost.” But Alice is just a normal girl; she loves ice cream too much, has an unhealthy addiction to American TV and lusts after the elusive thigh gap. She can’t even walk in heels, let alone in a bikini, but she finds herself joining Runway Models anyway. The finale is only a few months away. Will Alice catwalk her way to self-confidence or fail, proving everyone right? People can surprise you. "A light, humorous coming of age story about self-awareness, growth, and beauty—both inside and out." Shannon Thompson, Author of The Timely Death Trilogy

A couple of weeks ago I brought you an interview with Sarah in which we talked about the game and the Kickstarter campaign. However we left behind some important aspects of the game, like the illustration and the physical products, as well as the schedule for the production line and the Traveller version of Mindjammer that has already been backed. So here we are again, having another chat with the rather talented Sarah Newton and her no-less-excellent Kickstarter campaign for the line of Mindjammer products.
By Paco Garcia Jaen Those of you who know me at all, or listen to the podcast, know that I am in love with Mindjammer and its universe. I liked it when I read the novel, I liked it even more when I read the book and the adventure Hearts and Minds consolidated what I already knew with a superb setting packed with action. Of course the whole concept is by Sarah Newton and I still believe she’s probably one of the most promising RPG writers out there. As far as I’m concerned, she’s a genius. Now she’s on Kickstarter for the first time to create a new adventure for Mindjammer and, aptly put, kickstart a whole new line of products for the game that will allow her to create material much more quickly and frequently than planned. I got together with her for a while to talk about the original Mindjammer, the journey from first publish till now and what her plans are for the game, adventures and supplements. Hope you enjoy the show!

I have been looking forward to seeing Mindjammer for a long time. The Space Opera game that will probably set a new precedent for future sci-fi games is finally almost here and I am seriously looking forward to seeing what Sarah Newton is going to bless our gaming shelves with. I came accross Mindjammer years ago when Sarah Newton published her first novel. I read it in a lot less time than I was expecting and it already gave me all I needed. Great characters, great technology, believable settings in an incredible way… the formula was there. I never looked into the first edition of the game, Mindjammer, the only reason that the second one was coming and, knowing Sarah, it was bound to be a lot better than the first. Now that the game is in pre-order, I had to interview the author and find out even more about this fantastic setting. But before we talked about Mindjammer, we also talked about Monsters & Magic, a new take on the Old School type of games that truly and genuinely take the old rules and make something fantastic and new with them. As you can imagine, she didn’t disappoint!

The Christmas episode is here and I will keep things brief because you have to tidy up and eat those meals of deliciousness with your family and/or friends. In this episode Jenn, Vickey and I take a quick look at what 2012 has been and what it has brought to us from the gaming point of view. We also discuss what we’re looking forward to in 2013 and what plans we have for our gaming lives. And there are a lot of exciting plans, I have to say! Recently, at Dragonmeet, the I felt the panel on the RPG industry in the UK struggled a bit to come up with ways, ideas and plans to promote their games. Their replies weren’t as definite and to-the-point as I would have liked, so the three of us have put on our thinking caps and come up with 5 ways to promote gaming and games in an alternative way that will cost little money. OK, some of them do cost money, but we think they’re pretty good ideas. I’d be more interested in finding out what you think, though… Meanwhile, remember we have a giveaway. Just leave us feedback in iTunes (good or bad) and you could get your hands on a copy of Mindjammer, signed by the author, Sarah Newton, or a copy of Journeys to the West, a Pathfinder adventure by Christina Styles. And we have three copies of the adventure to give away!

I. Meditating on Melchizedek, Worshiping Christ "O magnify the Lord with me. And let us exalt his name together." Isn't that a great statement in the Psalms, I love that. It's kind of mysterious in a way because I don't know how you make an infinite God, greater. He's already great, infinitely great. The only way I can make sense of it is that he's too small in my estimation and yours. We're all thinking too small thoughts of Jesus. That's what we're doing, and seems like our task is to stop doing that, at least for a short period of time, for 40 plus minutes, that we would start thinking great thoughts of Jesus and specifically that we would think great thoughts of Jesus as our high priest, that we would have a sense of the greatness of his office at the right hand of God that you can have somewhat of an internal vision of all of heaven on its face before Jesus, as he moves through and takes his place at the right hand of the throne of the majesty. By faith you can see all of heaven bowing down, covering their faces because of the greatness of Jesus, and he takes his place at the right hand of God and he begins praying for you. Interceding for you, that you will finish this race of salvation that he has begun in you, that you would have great thoughts of Jesus. That's our task. And in order to do that, God has given us Hebrew 7, Psalm 1:10, and this person of Melchizedek. And the author to Hebrews is just unfolding the mysteries of this man Melchizedek and so we're going to meditate on Melchizedek, so that we can think great thoughts of Jesus. And as believers we're going to think great thoughts of Jesus, so that our hope will be strong, our faith energized and we'll do great things for him in this world and not fail or flag because of unbelief, but we'll be fed well from the word, that's the goal. So we're going to meditate on Melchizedek so that we can worship Christ. The Context in Hebrews Now this book of Hebrews, a magnificent work of grace, the scripture that portrays so beautifully, I hope you've seen it, but so beautifully the greatness of Jesus in every way. The reason for its writing, I think, as I just read between the lines, as I glean the situation from the text, that these were Jewish people who had made a profession of faith in Christ. But the authors write in them that they would hold on to their profession to the end, that they would continue to believe in Jesus to the end. I perceive that there're probably some Jewish style pressures on them and that they're being tempted to turn away from Jesus specifically away from Jesus to go to Old Covenant Judaism, to go to old covenant religion. And so the author gives them Jesus, that's the remedy. Jesus: Greater than Angels, Moses, Joshua, and the Priests Great thoughts of Jesus, the greatness of Jesus, the one who created heaven and earth, with the Father, the one who speaks a greater and a clearer word to us than any of the prophets ever did. The one who is greater than all of the angels, even all of the archangels, even all of the 100 million angels put together and multiplied by 100 million, the greatness of Jesus, greater than any angel. Greater than Moses, who is merely a servant in God's house. A great man. Yes. But greater than Moses. He was just a servant in God's house. But Jesus, his son, reigning over God's house. Greater than Joshua, who brought them into the promised land, and gave them rest but just for a time. Because the sin problem hadn't been cured and they got evicted. The covenant evicted them from the land, and so it was no permanent rest. But Jesus gives us our permanent rest. And we're yearning for that today, aren't we? We're yearning to come into the rest where we will lay down our labors forever. We've not reached it yet. Hebrews 4:9. We're not there yet, we're running a race with endurance. In one sense, by coming to faith in Christ, we've come to rest from our works, knowing that they won't save us anyway, but that's just a fore taste through the Spirit, we are going to someday lay it all down and we're going to come into our final rest. And so the author is writing to give us a sense of the greatness of Jesus and so he brings up in chapter five, this figure of Melchizedek. Jesus is a greater priest than the Levitical priest than the Aaronic priest, Aaron, a descendant of Levi. So it's one and the same, Levitical priest or Aaronic priest are the same thing, and Jesus is praised as better, it's greater. So the mentality here is, why in the world would you want to go back to what's inferior? What's inferior, what's temporary, what's a shadow, a pattern is finished, it's obsolete. It's gone. And so the author is giving them the sense, and very difficult, I think we can hardly imagine how difficult it would be for a first century faith-filled Jewish man or woman who has believed that Jesus is the Messiah, and has come to believe the prophecies to know that their religious system that they grew up with, that their ancestors did, that they received from Almighty God, is now obsolete. You don't need it anymore. Never again, the blood of an animal being accepted by God, never again, it's obsolete to be told that. So the author gives us Melchizedek. And so he's focusing on Melchizedek, this figure mentioned historically in Genesis 14, after Abraham had defeated the kings and was returning in victory and Melchizedek shows up and he has an encounter. We talked about it last time, the history of it, and then the Psalm the single reference in Psalm 110, and Verse 4, "The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind. You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek." So I think in my opinion Hebrews 7 is just a careful word-by-word exit Jesus of that statement. You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek's. We've already worked on the word Melchizedek in verse 1-3. Today in verse 4-10 we're going to talk about him as a priest and compare him to the priest, the Levitical priest specifically, and the order, the order of priesthood in verses 11-12 is going to be in front of us, God willing, next time that we preach on Hebrews, not next week, but the next time, and then verse 13-14. I think the author addresses just the word "you." He gives two verses to the word "You..." "You are a priest forever." And then verses 15-25, he just unfolds the word forever, what it means that he's a priest forever so we get 11 verses on forever. Last Week: the Mystery of Melchizedek’s Person in 7:1-3 So last time we saw the mystery of Melchizedek, the history of Melchizedek verses 1-3, look at it with me if you would. "This Melchizedek was king of Salem, and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First His name means 'king of righteousness;' then also 'King of Salem' means 'King of Peace.' Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, like the son of God, he remains a priest forever." So we looked at that last time. If I'm not careful I'll just slip right back into preaching that sermon again, so we just need to keep moving. But we've seen the greatness and the majesty of Melchizedek in these verses. Now: The Author Wants Us to Consider His Greatness Now the author in verse 4 wants us to consider Melchizedek's greatness. Look at verse 4. I'm going to go New American Standard here. "Now observe how great this man was…" Just think how great he was. But I think more technically, observe, the Greek word means See or Look. Let's look at Melchizedek. And since we can't literally physically do that, we can only do it by faith. So in the preaching of the word now, my desire is that the Holy Spirit would give you an internal vision of the greatness of Melchizedek. Again and again, the author of the Hebrews calls on that internal vision, that faith vision, that we would see things in the spiritual realm. For example, in Hebrews 2:1, it says, "We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away." So there's a more careful looking at the Gospel. Let's look at it. And then in 3:1, the author says, "Fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession." So there we're supposed to look at Jesus as our apostle and our high priest, 3:1. So we're seeing Jesus. And then later in this book, in 12:2 it says, "Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him, endured the cross. Despising it's shame and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." So we're supposed to look at these things, these invisible things, we're supposed to do it by faith. And so, the call here is to focus all of our attention on this man Melchizedek, and specifically on his greatness. That we should consider the greatness of Melchizedek. Why should we do that? Is Melchizedek our personal Lord and Savior? No, not at all, but Jesus is. And Melchizedek teaches us some things about Jesus. So, in considering the greatness of Melchizedek, we're going to consider even more the greatness of Jesus. And so that's the author's approach here. The author wants his readers' hope in Jesus to be very strong. I want your hope in Jesus to be very, very strong today. And so I'm preaching. I believe in preaching, I believe in preaching the word, my desire is to stay really close to the text, because the word feeds your faith, and your faith strengthens your whole life. I think all sin is a failure of faith. Conversely, all good service to God is a triumph of faith. And so if I can strengthen your faith, you'll live well to the glory of God, having already been justified by faith. So we're going to meditate on Melchizedek and we're not going to be lazy listeners, like he warned them not to be in Hebrews 5:11, said they were actually. But we're not going to be that. We're going to work hard here, we're going to try to dig in and try to understand this hierarchy that the author is giving us here. II. A Hierarchy of Greatness: Christ, Melchizedek, Abraham, Levi So he gives us a hierarchy of greatness, Christ, Melchizedek, Abraham, Levi. And just simply put, if I can just go to the heart of the matter: The reason he's doing this, is he's going to tell you that Christ is a greater priest than the Levitical priest. That's what he's telling you. That's it in a nutshell. And so the application of that is why in the world would you go backward to the Levitical priesthood? Christ is a great priest and he's all you need as a priest, he's infinitely more than you could possibly ask or imagine, and so that's what he's going to do. And so, the greatness of Christ is displayed by hierarchy. And so at the center of the argument is going to be the basic position that Melchizedek's greater than Abraham. And he's going to unfold that and the point of all of this is give us a sense of the greatness of Jesus as our high priest. Melchizedek Represents Christ Melchizedek represents Christ. It's a type of Christ, the pattern of Christ, and then Melchizedek, verse 7, is greater than Abraham. Look at verse 7, without a doubt, the lesser person is blessed by the greater, that's the author's point. Melchizedek is greater than Abraham. And if you keep going, then you're going to say that Abraham is greater than Levi and that's how it works. How great was Abraham? Well, Abraham, father and faith, the father of the Jewish nation. I guess someone have to say some Jews would say the greatest in all of their history. He is called here a patriarch, that means a father ruler, he is the father of their nation, he was a great man to whom the promises of God had come, a great man because he believed those promises enacted courageously on them, he became therefore, a father of a multitude greater than anyone could count. Abraham had walked with God and he was called God's friend, he interceded with God over Sodom and Gomorrah, he was a great man. And the Jews openly boasted in and (in some, I think, wrong way) trusted in their relationship with Abraham. They felt that because Abraham was their father that they were fine spiritually, that God could never condemn them because Abraham was their father. John the Baptist came having to just destroy that mentality. He said like fire, as he was preaching, he said, "And do not begin to say to yourselves. We have Abraham as our Father. I tell you that out of these stones. God is able to raise up children for Abraham. The axe is already at the root of the tree, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire." Don't trust in being a biological descendant of Abraham. But they did, they boasted in this. Jesus had a very similar encounter in John Chapter 8. To the Jews who had believed him. Jesus said, "If you continue in my word, then you are truly my disciples and then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." Well, some of them got offended at this statement. "Set us free?" "We are Abraham's descendants" they said, "and have never been slaves of anyone." Stop there. Just a simple Sunday school lesson would have taught them that they had actually indeed been slaves of someone. But this is just the mentality, the arrogance, "We are Abraham's descendants and we've never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?" Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin, but if the Son sets you free, then you'll be free indeed." How sweet is that? But later in a few verses, they said, "Abraham is our father." Went back to it again, and Jesus said, "If you were Abraham's children, then you would do the things Abraham did." Abraham is Great, but Melchizedek is Greater So in fact Abraham was a great man. But Melchizedek was greater. And you might think, "well, if he was greater why don't we have more on him?" Well, I think that Genesis 14, Psalm 1:10 and Hebrews 5:6-7 is enough. Amen? And those verses tell us that Melchizedek was greater than Abraham. And why? Because he was priest of God most high, King of Salem, and mostly especially because Abraham, this great man, thought that Melchizedek was greater. And gave him a tenth of everything and Melchizedek blessed him. That's why. And you might think, well, that's not satisfying to me. Well, it's clearly satisfying to the author of Hebrews. And he was writing on the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. We will go with him. Amen? Amen. So Melchizedek was greater than this great man, Abraham, and Abraham was greater than Levi, his great-grandson. The author to Hebrews continues to make his point, about the greatness of Melchizedek, he goes on to talk about the connection between Abraham and Levi. Levi was Abraham's descendant, his great-grandson. Abraham was clearly greater than Levi. Levi was in the body of his ancestor. It says here, we'll talk more about that in a moment. And Abraham acted on his behalf as a father represents his children. In the mind of the author to Hebrews there is no doubt whatsoever that Abraham was greater than Levi. Levi was just one of the 12 patriarchs. It was his descendant Aaron, who was the first high priest, under the Mosaic covenant. So it just keeps on going, the hierarchy of greatness just goes on down from there. And therefore, the argument here in this section of scripture is that Christ is greater than all of the Levitical priests. He's greater than all of the sons of Aaron. Christ is a greater priest than all of them. And therefore, why in the world would you want to turn back from Jesus to anything? And by the way, that's the connection to us gentiles, I'll make it at the end of this sermon, but we're not tempted to go back and offer an animal sacrifice. What does this text say to us? I'm telling you, we are all under intense pressure to turn away from Jesus every moment of our lives, and to meditate on the greatness of Jesus is also negatively to meditate on the greatness of the crime of forsaking him. That's what the author is getting at. So how does he make his point? Well, the key issues here are the tithe and the blessing, this is what he's doing, is the key link in this whole argument. III. The Tithe and the Blessing So look at the tithe first, verses 4-6. "Just think how great he was: Even the patriarch Abraham gave him a tenth of the plunder. Now the law requires the descendants of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people (that is, their brothers), even though their brothers are descended from Abraham. This man however, did not trace his descent from Levi, yet he collected a tenth from Abraham." So the evidence that the author gives us here of the greatness of Melchizedek is that he collected a tenth of the plunder that this great man Abraham had gotten from the defeat of the Kings. Literally, Abraham had given Melchizedek, a tenth of the top of the heap. The highest, the best, the cream floats to the top and from the top of the heap, he gave a tenth. The best he had to offer. That's what Abraham gave to Melchizedek. Now many who believe that the tithe is a permanent regulation for the people of God, point to this passage. A key passage, they would say, because it pre-dates the Law of Moses and shows it somewhat of a universal standard. I'm going to talk more about tithing at the end of this sermon. But whatever you think about tithing, however, it's clear that the author to Hebrews is using this as an indication of the superiority of Melchizedek to Abraham, that's his point. So, ponder the significance of this moment. Abraham, this great man is at the pinnacle of his earthly power, he's just won a mighty victory militarily, he's a hugely influential figure now in Palestine, what will become for the people of God, their inheritance. And at this key moment in history when Abraham's at the pinnacle of his success, this mysterious figure steps out of nowhere, Melchizedek. And Abraham gives him a tenth of all that he had plundered. Abraham clearly thinks that by giving this offering to this priest, he's giving to God Most High. And so, as honored and powerful and chosen and blessed as Abraham was, he considered Melchizedek to be greater and a conduit of giving right to God. Now the Levitical priests were required by law to collect the tithe from their brother Israelites, it says in verse 5. This is clearly recorded for us, this law is recorded in multiple places. But Numbers 18, "To the Levites I have given every tithe in Israel for an inheritance." Tithe means a tenth. So a tithe of all of the produce of the land, all the good things that God was going to give them because they were rich now in the Promised Land, that went to the Levites for their service at the tent of meeting. So that was their inheritance. They didn't get any land, but they got the service at the tent of meeting and they got the tithes. But this man Melchizedek was under no such law. The law of Moses requiring the tithe would not be written for another half a millennium, another 500 years and more. And clearly he is not descended from Levi. And yet, for all of that, he collects the tithe. He's not doing under the law and he's not doing it by genealogy, he just collects the tithe. So, this exchange then represents the giving of gifts and offerings to God through a different kind of priest, a priest in the order of Melchizedek. This order of Melchizedek was a greater order of priesthood than the Levitical priesthood, which has now become obsolete. And so, the tithe is evidence of the greatness of Melchizedek over Abraham. So also is the blessing. Not only did Abraham give Melchizedek a tithe, but Melchizedek gave Abraham a blessing. Now, this isn't just any blessing. Have you ever stopped to wonder why we say "Bless you" when people sneeze, but we don't say it when they cough? Why is that? I think there's some superstition from way back when in the dark woods of Northern Germany or something like that, where you're going to say "gesundheit" or something like that every time someone sneezes, and you need to speak a blessing. That's weak, friends. It's a weak blessing. I wish you well, I hope you don't die from whatever is ailing you. Or some elderly ladies will say, "Well, bless your heart." I don't say that, but I've been... My heart has been blessed a number of times by some people that definitely mean well, they want to bless my heart, and I'm grateful for that. But those are the weak pale kind of blessings that we're used to every day. What are these Blessings? The blessings that are discussed here are of a different order. There are patriarchal blessings, and there are priestly blessings. And these patriarchal and priestly blessings are really together prophetic blessings. They have a power to them, a significance to them. The call of Abraham is saturated in blessing language, isn't it? "Leave your country, your people and your father’s household…" Genesis 12. God said to Abram, "Leave your country and your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation…I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse;, and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you." That's not just any blessing, friends, that's how you get to Heaven. We are engrafted into this cultivated olive tree. The blessings given to Abraham, they come to us through Jesus, that's the blessing. But then think about Isaac blessing Jacob, not knowing it was Jacob, but he did bless him. And he said, "May God give you of heavens dew and of earth's richness and abundance of grain and new wine. May nations serve you and people's bow down to you. Be Lord over your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow down to you. May those who curse you be cursed, and those who bless you be blessed." That's a prophetic blessing. And though he thought he was giving it to Esau, he was giving it to Jacob. And when Esau sought the blessing, he couldn't change it. God had meant it for Jacob and he would be blessed. It was prophetic. And so also Jacob with his 12 sons. He gives them prophetic blessings, each one of them a different blessing appropriate to the tribe. And when Joseph brought his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim to his bedside, he crossed his hands and put the left hand on the head of the firstborn, and the right hand on the head of the second born, and he put Ephraim ahead of Manasseh, and so it would be. It was a patriarchal blessing, those are powerful words. So also the blessing that God through the law of Moses instructed the priests to give to the people. In Numbers 6, "Tell Aaron and his sons, this is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them, 'The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.' So they will put my name on the Israelites and I will bless them." These are significant and weighty things, these blessings. So the author to Hebrews makes much of the blessing that Melchizedek gave to Abram. He blessed Abram saying, "Blessed be Abram, by God Most High, creator of heaven and earth. And blessed be God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand." And the author who says this clearly proves that Melchizedek was greater than Abraham. Verse 7, "Without doubt the lesser person is blessed by the greater." This is, in fact, the whole point of the section of Hebrews 7, and an even greater point was made very plainly by Jesus in John Chapter 8. Not only is Melchizedek greater than Abraham, but Jesus is greater than Abraham. Jesus said to the Jews, "Your father Abraham, rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day. He saw it and was glad." They responded to him, "You are not yet 50 years old." But Jesus said to them, "Before Abraham was born, I am." That's the real point. Not so much Melchizedek, but the infinite greatness of Jesus. But the author's point here has been to show the superiority of Jesus' priestly ministry through Melchizedek, greater than that of the Levites. The Levites were required to collect the tithe, they did so, it says, as men condemned to die. Richard Baxter said he used to preach as a dying man to dying men. I've never forgotten that. Never forgotten that. Death comes on us quickly, doesn't it? You don't expect it. Eulene was at Sarah Newton's funeral. The next day she took ill and God took her home quickly. Are you ready to die? Are you ready to die? Are you ready to face your maker? Are you ready to face your judge? Only one way to get ready, faith in Jesus, trust in him. He died on the cross, he shed his blood, that's what we were celebrating in the singing. That's what we're going to celebrate next week, Easter Sunday. I'm not waiting for next week, I'm going to celebrate it today. Alright? I'm going to celebrate the resurrection, I'm going to celebrate the crucifixion. That is the only provision for a sinner like me to stand blameless before God. It was Eulene's hope, and in the name of that hope she has her reward now. Are you ready to die? The tenth is collected by dying men from other dying men. But in the other case, by him who is declared to be living, Jesus is our living great High Priest. All of those priests died, Jesus ever lives to intercede for us. Amen. Death no longer has mastery over him, he cannot die again. Death is finished with him, and Jesus will someday destroy death, and that's the future. IV. The “Presence “ of Levi, and the Principle of Representation Final point the author makes here is mystical, deep, difficult to accept, but true. The presence of Levi and the principle of representation. Look at verses 9-10, "One might even say that Levi who collects the tenth, paid the tenth through Abraham, because when Melchizedek met Abraham, Levi was still in the body of his ancestor." Perhaps the most mystical and most significant statement here. Here the author's claiming that in some way Levi was there. Think about that hymn, "Were you there?" I'm not going to sing. Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Sometimes it causes me to tremble. Levi was there when Abraham paid the tithe. The key connection here is the issue of what we call federal headship, or representation. That the father of the tribe represents the whole tribe there. The key understanding. It's very foreign to us who live in this meritocracy known as America. We actually kind of rebelled against that whole thing, the aristocracy of Great Britain, the idea that your whole social status was defined by your genealogy, by who your father was. No, no, no, we'll make our own way in the world, thank you very much. If we have skills and abilities, we will rise. That's America. So we have a hard time with the idea of federal headship, really we struggle with that. We struggle with the fact that Levi was there in the body of his ancestor and did something, he paid the tithe because Abraham paid. But I tell you, it is foundational to two of the most key moments, key moments in redemptive history, what happened with Adam at the Garden of Eden, and what happened with Jesus at the cross. Federal headship, representation in both cases. Adam was there at the tree representing you and I, and we were in some mysterious way there with him. And when he ate from that fruit, we sinned. Friends, that's the teaching of Romans 5:12. "Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men," listen, "because all sinned." That is so hard to accept. I didn't do anything. Yes, you did, you sinned in Adam. And if you can't accept that, how can you accept forgiveness at the cross of Christ? Because the Bible reveals that you were there spiritually if you are united with Christ by faith. You were there, friends, spiritually. If Christ is your substitute, if he is your savior, you are one with him, united with him. So it says in Romans 5:19, "Just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous." I was made a sinner in Adam, I am made righteous in Jesus. And again, you could say the same thing the other way. I didn't do anything. I didn't obey the law like I should have. No, God sees you as righteous, and you are righteous, just like God saw you a sinner, and you were sinner in Adam. It's federal headship. Or again, 1 Corinthians 15:21-22, "For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive." Paul sums this up very powerful in Galatians 2:20. He says there, " I have been crucified with Christ. I died with Jesus, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. And the life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me." There is a spiritual union there. We were dead, friends. We were dead in our transgressions and sins in which we used to live, when we followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in the sons of disobedience. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh, following its lusts, its evil desires. Like the rest, we were, all of us, by nature, children of wrath. But God, because of his great glorious mercy in which he loved us, made us alive with Christ, even when we were dead in our transgressions. It is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ, and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus. So were you there when they crucified my Lord? Yes, I was there. I was on that cross dying with Jesus. Was I there resurrection day? Yeah, spiritually I was there because I'm one with him by faith. And so, in some mysterious way, Levi was there paying the tenth through Abraham. V. Applications So, what applications can we take from this? Well, trust in Christ alone. Trust in him. It's all about faith in Jesus. That's what the whole Book of Hebrews is for. So that's what the whole Bible is for. Put your hope solely on Jesus and trust in him. You can't stand before such a holy God alone without a substitute, without a high priest pleading the merit of his blood on your behalf, you cannot survive. While there's time, put your trust in him. You don't need to go anywhere or do anything, you just need to stand there and see the salvation of your God, and let Jesus' righteousness be yours, let his death be yours by simple faith. And for you, as believers in Christ, make the connection too today. I have already said none of you is feeling a strong pull back to Old Covenant Judaism. If you are, let me know, please come and tell me. I would think we would have dealt with that by seven chapters of Hebrews by now, but come and talk to me. We're not going backward that way, but I don't think that's a strong pull for 21st Century Americans. But there is something pulling on you to pull you away from Jesus, something's pulling on you to get you to stop reading your Bible, to stop praying, to stop fellowshipping with believers, to stop coming to church, to stop walking the Christian walk, something's pulling on you, you know what I'm talking about. And you must have a great High Priest at the right hand of God, praying for you. And it seems you must know about it, you must know that he's there, you must know it vigorously, you must really kind of get into knowing that you have a great High Priest at the right hand of God. Feed your souls on that, picture him there standing and pleading on your behalf. Thirdly, Worship. Worship Christ. Worship him. By the Spirit of God, we worship Jesus. This point, the point about Melchizedek. Melchizedek will now fade into the background, Jesus will stand alone, bright, shining in your minds. We were here today to worship Jesus. Amen. We're here for him. And you should live your whole life pouring out worship on Jesus. This meditation Melchizedek has helped you see the greatness of Jesus. Worship him today. Set aside your cares, Jesus has it covered, he knows everything you're facing, he's brought it to you actually. Worship him. Finally, briefly, about the tithe. Some people say that the tithe is an abiding standard and that Christians should give the tithe, and they would point right here to the New Testament. Listen, let me tell you something, I think Randy Alcorn summed this up for me when he said that tithe is the training wheels of Christian giving. That's humbling. Training wheels. Remember when you were little kids, or when you were a little kid, you're riding wobbly, wobbly, wobbly, and you got these little wheels left and right, and they keep you upright. You're a beginner bike rider, okay? He said that's the tithe for Christian giving. Whoa, how does he say that? Well, his argument is that everything in the old covenant is better and enhanced in the new. It always goes better, bigger, brighter, more beautiful, more awesome. And for a Christian to say, "Okay, the old covenant people, they had to give a tenth. Thank God we're not under the law, we can give less than the tenth." "Wrong direction," Randy Alcorn is saying, "Wrong direction." The law is a law of love. Give what you want, but want a lot. Give and it will be given to you, pressed down, full measure. It'll pour over into your lap. Jesus is saying, "That's the way I gave to you. Learn of Me, and give like that." And so if the tithe helps you get going, then let it help you, training wheels have their purpose. But then take them off when you can. And like Randy Alcorn said, "If You gave a tenth of your income, would you die?" I love that question. I think that's just huge. "I don't know if I... " Well, just try it and see if you expire, and if you do, you'll be with Jesus. You might, maybe you'll die, but probably you won't. And then go on from there. That's, I think, the best teaching on tithing. But the final word can't be tithing. The final word has to be the greatness of Jesus. Some day you will see your great High Priest, you'll see him with your eyes, and you will worship him. Feed your souls on that this week. Close with me in prayer.
