Dan has crafted stunning custom lettering for brands, agencies, and clients worldwide, but his journey into the world of type wasn't a straight path—it was shaped by frustration, perseverance, and an unexpected return to his roots.Dan shares the story of his late father, a renowned lettering artist, and how clearing out his dad's studio after his passing led to a creative revelation. Jessica Hische is a lettering artist and author with a tendency to overshare and a penchant for procrastiworking.
Lettering artist Lauren Hom was a super shy and studious child. Her crafty mother would make snacks with her initials cut out of cheese slices. In her teenage years, her first love led to slipping grades and the realization that her creativity, not science, would be her path to college. She sold her parents on going to art school with the promise of learning the advertising business. After a brief stint at an ad agency, she started freelancing with her art, and now has made an art out of freelancing.Images, links and more from Lauren HomThanks to Adobe MAX for hosting us in the Airstream podcast lounge. Please say Hi on social! I'm still a bit fan-girling, hehe. Having the very talented Natalie Brown from Threeologie as a guest on 'Joke's Joyful Journey' is such a treat! What a way to conclude the series! Natalie has been in the Hand Lettering and Design business full-time for over 7 years now; she helps clients from all over the world and she loves helping other artists to fulfil their full potential as artists, and enabling them to earn a passive income. Natalie does it all! She is a true unicorn; she sells online courses, creates digital content, paints murals, designs logos and so more! We had a ton of fun, chatting about learning new things, following your curiosity, using different art mediums, being intrigued by programs and software and what it's like to learn things by yourself as compared to going to school for the specific education. In this episode, Natalie describes her process around ideas and all the things she wants to do. She doesn't get overwhelmed, wow, so it's extremely insightful to hear her process and how she does the things. Of course, we also talk about the 'syndromes', from Imposter to the fear of not being relevant in the design world. How do art and lettering fit into it? Very, very interesting! There are so many more cool things we mention in this episode; it was so amazing! Her quote is also really cool: "A mind stretched by new experiences can never go back to its old dimensions." Check out the episode to hear the full story. Will you tag us when you get creative with the quote? You can find Natalie as 'Threeologie' basically everywhere on the internet, like Instagram (@Threeologie), TikTok and Pinterest. Her website is threeologie.com where you can find all the wonderful things. And to top it off, I can offer a fantastic discount of 75% on her Handlettering Business Bundle!!

Now, I'm sharing this episode because it unveils my own path as a lettering artist: how I left everything behind and moved from South America to Europe and pivoted careers, the steps I took to start my lettering studio and get my first clients, the skills that I had to acquire to “make it” as an artist, build a team, and land dream assignments — including insights on how I navigated the Covid-19 pandemic to shape a new vision for my business that now propels other lettering artists and illustrators forward. I hope that this episode will show you what's possible for you as an artist and will provide you with some insights and tactics that you can use to shape your own path. Lauren Hom is a California-born designer, illustrator & hand lettering artist with a 250k strong following on Instagram. She is known for her use of bright colour palettes & playful letterings and has worked for clients such as Starbucks, YouTube, TIME Magazine, Google and AT&T. She has also been recognised by Communications Arts, the Art Directors Club, the One Club, the Type Directors Club and the Webby Awards. But how did it all start? As with all STIMY episodes, we start from the very beginning: with Lauren's childhood & how she ended up studying at the School of Visual Arts for, of all courses, advertising! While there, she met influential figures who had a deep influence on her decision to become a freelance artist. Turns out, being the junior director of a big ad agency in New York wasn't the dream job she'd thought it would be! Lauren also peels back the layers on some of her most popular passion projects, beginning with Daily Dishonesty - which landed her a book deal upon graduation! That proved pivotal, as it gave her a financial cushion to launch a freelance career. Three things stood out with Lauren's life story:her talent in lettering;her ability to use passion projects to change the trajectory of her freelance career, repeatedly; andher willingness to be open about how she executes her projects, markets them and what she earns! And finally, why she is now going on a sabbatical and entering culinary school. If you've ever been curious about the business side of an artist's career, then this is the episode for you.Highlights4:58 Work hard, snack hard5:38 Doing advertising11:40 Becoming a Junior Art Director in a big New York city ad firm13:36 Daily Dishonesty16:52 Seeing Daily Dishonesty go viral18:51 Getting an illustration agent20:14 Knowing when to say no to a client22:59 Planning to go freelance24:17 Earning $100,000 by Year 3 of freelancing25:12 Growing an audience on Instagram28:27 “Will Letter for Lunch” side project31:28 Getting clients like Microsoft & LinkedIn in less than 1 year34:12 Flour Crown & Peen Cuisine39:30 Traveling 1.5 years around the world40:47 Being inspired more by every day life44:35 Taking Back Sunday46:36 Taking a creative sabbatical to go to culinary school54:48 Would Lauren ever do street art?

Today we're talking with Cymone Wilder from Simon and Moose. She is a full time graphic designer by day, amazing lettering artist by night. She has some really cool creative processes and uses some unique methods and materials to create her artwork, so it was really fun to hear the behind the scenes on that! For those of you who missed it, last week we launched a graphic design contract template! Thank you all for your support on that!! It is thorough, peer reviewed contract, made in collaboration with my lawyer Kiersty Loughmiller. I always say hiring your own lawyer is the best option, but a contract template like this drafted by a lawyer is the next best and a super affordable option.
