John 10:22-30At that time, the festival of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. So the Jews gathered around him and asked him, “How long will you keep us in the suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us, plainly.”Jesus answered them, “I have told you and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father's name testify to me, but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep. My sheep hear my voice. I know them and they follow me. I give them eternal life and they will never perish. No one will snatch them from my hand. What the Father has given me is greater than all else and no one can snatch it from the Father's hand. The Father and I are one.” “You do not believe because you do not belong to my sheep.”“You do not believe because you do not belong.” What if that's the whole tweet, as they say? What if that's all we need to hear this morning? And what if you and I are supposed to be convicted by that – as followers of Jesus – rather than use it as some kind of judgement against those who consider themselves not to be followers of the Jesus we claim?“You do not believe because you do not belong.”Jesus is talking to the Jews who weren't on board yet with what he was up to. And, with a little pastoral imagination, I like to think his disciples were within earshot of this conversation; that they were following him around, as usual, and that Jesus knew he was being heard by both at the same time; that he was speaking to both crowds at once – those who belonged and those who didn't believe. There are plenty of people in the world who don't believe in Jesus – or God – or have a Christian faith for all sorts of rational, considered, thoughtful, theological reasons. Maybe they're deliberately, purposefully atheists. Maybe they're people of another faith – Jews, Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus, pagans. I'm not talking about them, necessarily.Instead, I found myself wondering this week about those who don't believe, but who would, could, might believe, if only we – as followers of Jesus – would do better at finding ways for them to BELONG, first. (“You don't believe because you don't belong…”)I heard two stories just this week, in two very different, settings, from two very different sources, about two sets of parents who were struggling with the fact that their gay or lesbian children weren't people of faith; didn't go to church; didn't believe or worship or practice a faith that their parents wished that they would. In one case, the child had been raised in the Church, but had fallen away from an active, practicing life of faith. In the other case, the family wasn't one who had ever practiced a faith, but the father came to believe in mid-life, and wanted to bring his wife and grown children along with him for the journey. (For what it's worth, one of these stories came by way of a colleague, here in Indianapolis. The other was from a completely unrelated story I heard on “This American Life.”)Anyway, what these two sets of parents have in common, is their outspoken disapproval of their children's sexuality, which is evident to the adult children they want to love, by either the theology they adhere to (“Love the sinner. Hate the Sin.” sort of stuff.), their political persuasion (the politicians and policies they support that do harm to their gay children), or both.In other words, the children of these parents know that they don't – and will never – BELONG to their parents' faith communities or fit into their misguided view of the world, so how could they and why would they ever want to believe in the things their parents professed about a loving, gracious, merciful God?“…you don't believe because you don't belong.”In my opinion, so many people in so many walks of life are falling away from the faith or throwing it all out with the bath water, because they see Christianity connected with exclusion, judgment, hypocrisy, greed, violence, and more. People don't believe because they don't belong – or because they don't want to belong – to a body that embodies any of those things. And, as hard and as sad and as frustrating as that is, it makes perfect sense to me. And it's why we have so much work to do.And I think that work starts with belonging. They don't believe because they don't belong.People long to feel and to experience welcome, love, and affirmation. And when they do, they might begin to wonder about believing and embracing the God who promises it.If we want people to feel like part of God's family… If we want people to learn about the grace we proclaim… If we want people to believe in the wideness of God's mercy, in the amazing love of our creator, in the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and in life everlasting…I'm convinced that they need to know, trust, and feel like they BELONG, first. And I think our call is to show and to shout and to share the good news of that belonging as loudly and as clearly, as often and in as many ways as we can manage.I heard another, beautiful story this week – perfect for Mother's Day – about a different family altogether who proved what belonging can do. Many years ago, this set of American parents adopted a 7 year-old boy from Romania, who had lived the first 7-and-a-half years of his life in an orphanage where he shared a crib with another boy his age that entire time. As they grew, they stayed in that crib, to the point that they had to sleep sitting up. They didn't go to school. They didn't go outside. They only left their crib to eat and to use the bathroom. Daniel, the boy who was adopted by the Americans in South Euclid, Ohio, never even knew the names of the adults who took care of him in that orphanage. The short of the long is that Daniel came to the states utterly unprepared for the life with which his adoptive parents hoped to give him – he simply wasn't ready socially, emotionally, or intellectually for a life with people who loved him. After 7 years in a crib, how could he be? And after a six-month honeymoon period with his new family in the states, things went downhill fast and furiously.Daniel developed an anger and rage over all that he couldn't process or understand about his experience in the orphanage, his having been put there in the first place by his birth parents, and his place in the world and with his new mom and dad. He threw tantrums they described as “tornadoes of rage … eight hour marathons where he would throw anything he could get his hands on.” There were thousands of holes in his bedroom walls from his violent outbursts. He abused social workers and specialists. He choked a puppy. He gave his mom, Heidi, a black eye, once. He held a knife to her neck, another time. It got so bad they hired the equivalent of a bodyguard to be in the house, so that Heidi was never alone with her new son. Finally – and I'm leaving out a lot of the story, mind you – they embarked on a fascinating, controversial treatment for Daniel's diagnosed Attachment Disorder where they pulled him out of school, Heidi quit her job, and they spent several months side-by-side, literally no farther than three feet apart. If one of them went to the bathroom, the other waited outside the door. They only time they were not next to each other, was when they were sleeping. They worked to establish the bond that's supposed to be created between mothers and infants, under normal circumstances, by being very deliberate about eye-contact, for instance, and proximity. Daniel wasn't allowed to ask for anything – he had to learn, from experience, that Heidi would provide basic needs for him, like food and drink. Daniel's punishment for not playing along, or for doing something wrong, was called a “Time In,” where he would be subjected to time on the couch, being hugged by his mother.Ultimately, it worked. After eight weeks of this and a year of “holding therapy” where the family of three cradled each other – holding 13 year-old Daniel like a newborn – for 20 minutes, every night for a year, Daniel began to transform, slowly, but surely, almost imperceptibly, into a boy who believed that he would be and could be and was LOVED by his parents. Another way to say this, if you ask me, is that Daniel came to believe in that love, because he was finally convinced that he belonged to his new family. He believed because he belonged. And I think this is our call as people of God in the world. People need to see and to know that they already belong to the good news and grace and eternal life we claim. And I think it's our job and it should be our joy – even when it's hard – to show that kind of love and belonging to them.I think they need to see us marching at PRIDE parades.I think they need to see us teaching about and practicing anti-racism.I think they need to see our kids walking against homelessness and they need to see us giving money to their cause.I think politicians need to receive our letters, our phone calls, and our votes – in the name of Jesus – that speak out on behalf of people who are hungry and homeless and criminalized for that. (Join us for that next Sunday, between services.)I think the women who are served by our Agape ministry to sex workers need to experience the proximity and generosity of that ministry. And the list goes on. But I've said enough. And, just because it couldn't be more timely, I'll close with something from the new Pope Leo that makes me think he'd agree with me. Apparently, he said this once:“We are often worried about teaching doctrine, but we risk forgetting that our first duty is to communicate the beauty and joy of knowing Jesus.”They don't believe, because they don't belong.I think those who don't believe what we claim to know about the grace of God need to experience it, first; they need to see us making room for them, for their doubts, and for their unbelief – whoever “they” may be. And that needs to happen, not because it's our job to convince them of God's love, but because we – and the world – will be blessed and better for having shared this love humbly, hopefully, and with a warm welcome of belonging, in Jesus' name.Amen[To hear the full story of Daniel and his family, listen to Episode 317 of This American Life, “Unconditional Love.”]

Behind this South Euclid-based nonprofit is a family origin story resulting in three generations of helping others. Sarah Yaffe Alevsky recently succeeded her mother-in-law, who had taken over the Kosher Food Pantry from her own parents, Rabbi Zalman Kazen and Shula Kazen, who started the organization in the 70s. Sarah heard the call and, with her husband, moved the family from New York to Cleveland to assume leadership of the food pantry which serves around 6,000 people each month. Their work is not limited to the Jewish community. A man named "Joe" tragically met his demise while walking in the Euclid Creek Reservation in South Euclid, Ohio on May 8th, 1981. Accompanied by three other individuals, he, unfortunately, fell off a cliff. Joe, a Caucasian male, possessed brown hair that was described as thin, indicating possible hair loss. His brown eyes contained lighter shades within them, and he sported a beard and mustache. Standing at a height of 5'7" and weighing 146 pounds, he had a slender physical appearance. Among his belongings, Joe was discovered with suntan oil, two bottles of bonnie bell lotion, ultra brite toothpaste, a green toothbrush, two Bic razors, four cleansing wipes, and a plastic vial. These items were found alongside a Lee brand blue denim jacket (size 38 regular). The attire he wore consisted of a plaid flannel shirt in blue, brown, tan, and white, bearing the Grodins Brand. His pants were tan Levi Strauss, and he had on a medium-sized brown vinyl jacket from the L'avion brand. Additionally, he wore a large-sized brown belt by Anne Klein. For footwear, he had orange ankle boots in size 8.5. Regrettably, on July 26, 1981, an individual was observed tragically leaping to their demise from the Detroit-Superior bridge. The specific location of this incident was approximately 100 feet south of Merwin Avenue. Unfortunately, there is limited information available regarding this individual. However, here is what we do know. The person was identified as a Caucasian male, likely aged between 45 and 55. Standing at a height of 5'10" and weighing 143 pounds, he had brown straight hair of considerable length. He possessed a graying brown mustache and beard. Although described as hazel, his eyes appear blue in post-mortem images. It appears that he was missing at least two front teeth, and potentially more towards the back. This suggests a lack of access to dental care for several years, possibly even decades. In terms of attire, he was discovered wearing a single blue quilted jacket from K Mart, which was sized small. He also had on a light blue, green, and beige flannel shirt, along with plaid flannel pants in shades of brown, blue, gray, and white. Notably, he wore mismatched socks, one blue and the other black, with a possibility of a third sock layered beneath the blue one according to NamUs records. Blue Converse shoes were also present, although the size is not specified. Additionally, a white belt is visible in the clothing photographs provided by NamUs. The Navajo Event: Proof of God's Existence by Rick FishmanThis book is about a young couple caught in an apartment fire, and their only means of escape is leaping out of a second-story window. Unfortunately, the husband does not survive. The woman, Carli, undergoes surgery for severe burns and a broken spine with a long recovery ahead. But when a medicine man performs a Navajo healing ceremony, Carli's skin miraculously becomes healthy again. And even more surprising, her spinal hardware has vanished! Worldwide debate ensues, and even the pope weighs in. Is it a miracle? Or, as a fanatic doctor insists, a monstrous hoax to get rich and cover up the murder of her husband? This turns out to be a sticky debate topic with no easy answers-all while Carli's life is forever altered. The Navajo Event is a captivating story that focuses on layers of suspense and the supernatural, much like a layered onion, and is often interspersed with the author's own brand of wry humor.Rick Fishman brings something fresh to the table with this story which involves his daughter and some of her real-life experiences. It contains no profanity, sex, or graphic violence. It is for those who would have an interest in the intermingling of Christian, Jewish, and Navajo cultures . . . and also for those who would enjoy a short, humorous, paranormal mystery highlighted by fifteen photo-illustrations. Rick is uniquely qualified to write this book because part of it is based on the true story regarding his own family tragedy. He is also well versed in the culture of the Navajo Nation in Arizona from personal visits there and knowledge shared with him by his cousin, who worked there as a physician. This is his second book having previously written the children's baseball comedy, Sandlot Summit.Rick Fishman is an Ohio State Buckeye alum and had a split career as an accountant and math teacher, and is currently retired … enjoying family time at home reading, writing, walking the dog, and feeding the squirrels. He and his wife have two adult children. The Navajo Event is Rick's second novel, following his kids' baseball comedy Sandlot Summit.Living in Cleveland, Rick coached youth baseball in Lyndhurst, Ohio for 12 years and has been a volunteer in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Association since 2013. In 1992, Rick earned a spot in the Guinness Book of Records by painting the world's largest map at Rowland Elementary School in South Euclid, Ohio.Facebook page: Facebook.com/Rick.Fishman.9Email: thenavajoevent@aol.comhttps://www.amazon.com/Navajo-Event-Proof-Gods-Existence/dp/1977250424/ref=sr_1_1?crid=YOZCD6MDBC89&keywords=the+navajo+event&qid=1653613704&s=books&sprefix=the+navajo%2Cstripbooks%2C85&sr=1-1https://sandlotsummit.com/http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/62322kppa.mp3

Hopefully all you writers out there got all your writing goals done in all your readers got all your reading goals done, because hey, we're into the end of the year now. We've got Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, and then New Year's all coming up, bam. And before you know it, I know that's how summer kind of went for me. Bam, right? So today, we've got a special episode. Earlier, in the podcast run, I had someone on ran, who talked about mental health, and dealing with mental health and had written a book. This time, I've got another author who has been dealing with schizophrenia. And she has written a book about it to help others and her life struggle and what she's learned from it. So it's a hard subject. And a lot of times people don't want to deal with it and talk about it. But that's what we can do with our writing. We can bring these subjects to light we can bring them out and help others learn and become more comfortable about it. Because if you're more comfortable about it, you can talk about it. So Laurie has a lot to say about her book and schizophrenia in general. And we have a good discussion about it. So before I ramble on for too long, here's Laurie. Lori, welcome to discover wordsmith podcast. How are you doing today? Lori 2:11Okay, how are you? Good. Stephen 2:13And just of note to everyone that's watching the video, you're at the local library, they offer rooms, and you can rent to get video meetings and do these types of things. So I'm a big proponent of pushing the library. So it's good to see some things that the libraries do that people may not know about. So they have meeting rooms and all sorts of great things. Right. Laurie, tell us a little bit about yourself, who you are, where you're from, and what you like to do outside of writing. Lori 2:44I am from I was born in Lawrenceville, Ohio. I've lived East I've lived West. But my favorite is the east side. I like the east side. And right now I live in South Euclid. Stephen 2:58All right. What do you like to do besides writing? Lori 3:01I like to read Actually, I actually love to read and I love to write. With my book, I was able to create a book because every thing that have life experiences I've had in my life, I was able to make a book out of experiences that I've been through. And I love to write. Okay, that's how the book came about is I just had experiences that that were able to create a book. Stephen 3:32When did you start writing? And then what made you finally start or want to write this book? Lori 3:39You know, like I said, I had things I went through, like different experiences. And I would write them down. Like I would write like, write down things that happened to me. experiences I've had, like I said was a was making me able to create a book. Stephen 3:57Have you written all your life? Or is this recent? Lori 4:01Well, I've written my whole life like things that have happened to me. But I didn't create a book until 2015 is when I started to create a book. My first book was titled what is the schizophrenic supposed to look like? And, and the reason I titled it that is because people would see me on medication, you know, doing really well on medication, and they'd be like, how could you have schizophrenia? You don't look like you have schizophrenia.

Black Women and Girls are Too Often the Targets of Violence in America

Too often African American women and girls are targets of violence and abuse in America. The abuse is caused by interactions with law enforcement as well as domestic abuse, says Dr. Aretina Hamilton, a human geographer, scholar, and author. She says Black women live in a patriarchal environment where they are, unfortunately, valued less than even Black men. As a result, Dr. Hamilton says that too often Black women and girls are considered “disposable” in society and are not valued in the caste system in which they live. Not only are Black women and girls subject to domestic violence in their homes, they are a subset of Black people being shot by police. Since 2015, 247 Black women were killed by police officers and 89 of them were killed at home or in their residences, according to a “Washington Post” October 21, 2020 article. The “Washington Post” has been tracking deaths of black women by police since 2015. The fact that the lives of Black women are often considered less valuable or less newsworthy than black men is a major concern of advocates. This slight is seen by many scholars and public policy makers as a major problem. Dr. Hamilton is joined in this conversation by Judge Gayle Williams Byers the first Black female judge in the S. Euclid Municipal Court in South Euclid, Ohio. Judge Byers adds her personal perspective of seeing Black female victims of domestic violence in her court.

Black Children in 2020 are Still Disadvantage in Educational Opportunities

African American children are often told by the white establishment that “education” is the way to obtain equality yet, at the same time, black children are not given equal educational opportunities. They are told to get a quality education at the same time their schools are underfunded, have old textbooks, and have overly stretched teachers, says Ray Freeman, vice-president of the Warrensville Heights School Board in Northeastern Ohio. The “achievement gap” is evident, according to Freeman and Judge Gayle Williams Byers of the South Euclid, Ohio Municipal Court. Black students with the same years of schooling do not perform overall as well as whites. But, it’s not the black child’s fault. They are told to succeed but not given the tools to succeed. Freeman adds. They are short-changed in many different ways on their educational experience. Freeman is a midwestern regional member of the National School Board Association and travels the country visiting schools, especially in impoverished neighborhoods. He says the achievement gap is nationwide and not just regional. Black children just are not given equal opportunities for success, Freeman and Byers note. Often black children are given low expectations by whites for academic acumen equal to their white counterparts. There also is the expectation of the pipeline to prison for many black men instead of academic success. Black young men and young women are not “expected” by white culture to have equal academic prowess to whites, says Freeman. But he contends that is so wrong. Therefore, black students are not given many of the same opportunities. Freeman and Byers are firm believers that co-curricular activities in predominately black schools are lacking. Little is offered beyond sports. Freeman suggests that there should be an array of co-curricular opportunities in black schools that would spark academic interests and a desire to succeed. He says that these activities are just as important as the rigor in the academic classrooms.

A Black Judge is Subjected to Continual Acts of Racism Despite Her Position

In 2012, Gayle Williams Byers was elected to become the first black judge for the South Euclid Municipal Court in Northeastern Ohio. She came to the job with a wealth of experience after being a Congressional staffer on Capitol Hill and after spending nearly a decade as an Assistant Prosecutor in Cuyahoga County (Cleveland-area). However, despite her election win, her experience and the honor of being the first female black judge in her court, she confronted forms of overt and covert racism from the start. Over the past eight years, it has been one racial insult or slight after another being generated by the white power establishment in her community. Repeated efforts have been made to intimidate her, question her character, and to minimize her powerful position. “If I, as judge, get treated in a racist manner, I can only imagine what happens to the average black person in the streets,” Judge Byers says. “We need to have a real and meaningful conversation about race as it permeates all aspects of society.” South Euclid is a racially diverse community with about 50 percent of the population being African American and other people of color. However, the Mayor, police chief, city law director and five of the seven council positions are filled by whites. The first racial incident happened to Judge Byers about six months after taking office when the police chief, law director and some members of council met with the judge to discuss one of her rulings with which the police chief disagreed. The chief started his presentation by saying to the white group: I’m not here to “lynch” the judge, according to Judge Byers. Judge Byers took great umbrage at the lynching reference. She said she had an immediate and intense reaction that the white chief of police would utter those words to a black female judge to minimize her and her elected position as head of the local judicial system. She remembers digging her fingers in the arms of her chair. This was only the beginning of one incident after another. Despite being chosen by the electorate for a second term, she has been falsely accused of not knowing her place, dishonesty, laziness and other racial tropes by white office holders. They even installed ceiling cameras in her jury room without any consultation with her about the sanctity of jury privacy. Even though she receives national honors and accolades for excellence, she still must fight racial battles with her own city administration. For example, Judge Byers has been selected as the only Judicial Fellow to the National Judicial College, a prestigious judicial position. Yet, that honor has been besmirched and marginalized by whites in power. Judge Byers calls on white allies to become anti-racists. She says it is not enough to say you are not racist. Instead, you have to fight racism by being ANTI-RACIST. Hear Judge Byers tell her story on this week’s Spectrum Podcast. This will start a series of serious conversations about racism in American.

The cash heading to Cuyahoga and Summit counties in opioid case settlements has topped $65 million and continues to climb, which makes us wonder whether we are getting more than we actually spent on the crisis. That’s where we start the conversation on the first October episode of This Week in the CLE, the analysis of the news by the journalists of cleveland.com. Laura Johnston and I cohost.Criminal justice editor Kris Wernowsky provides the details on the growing opioid settlements and talks about the tangible costs, like autopsies, and the less visible costs, such as helping people overcome addiction. Kris also talks about the latest attempt by the drug companies to kick the Cleveland judge off of all of the lawsuits governments have filed involving the crisis.Kris also offers insights into a multimillion dollar pyramid scheme with cheese puffs at the center and some interesting characters, including a woman who twice hosted something called the Lingerie Bowl. The scam cost a bunch of people their life savings, and two people who carried out the scheme were sentenced this week in Cuyahoga County.New information about a felon photographed with a gun and a lot of cash on Mayor Frank. Jackson’s driveway closes the Kris segment, as Kris explains how public documents identify the man in the photo as a member of a criminal gang.Reporter Pete Krouse joins the podcast to talk about the battle of South Euclid, between the City Council and the municipal court judge.Pete also talks about the Greater Cleveland Partnership’s new approach to endorsing proposed tax increases on the ballot. And Pete lays out the question that is on the minds of a lot of civic leaders these days: What does an inclusive economy mean? It’s a question that is central to several discussions taking place this year with an aim of mapping prosperity for the region The next edition of Cleveland Connects will get at that question with a panel discussion. Cleveland Connects is sponsored by PNC Bank and produced by cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer in partnership with ideastream, the public broadcasting entity that includes WVIZ/PBS Channel 25, WCPN FM/90.3 and WCLV FM/104.9.Politics editor Jane Kahoun is up next, with a perspective on the voter purge that finally took place, after years of political squabbling and court fights.Jane also talks about the intensifying skirmishes in the move to put an expensive bailout of the state’s nuclear plants before voters. Joey Davis , current Bellator unbeaten MMA fighter is one of a handful in all of collegiate history to go unbeaten his entire career and win 4 NCAA wrestling titles. Joey was 133-0 and won 4 Division 2 National titles for Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio but his story of surviving the tough streets of Compton, California, and making his way to Cleveland, Ohio is compelling. How Snoop Dogg influenced him as a youth football player. How the great Jim Brown was someone helping him on his journey. Davis, with Edward Gallo has written an inspirational book, From Compton to Cleveland, which is out now. Davis returned to Notre Dame College to graduate and walk across that stage on May 4th. I sat down with him after I shot an interview for a piece I am doing on him for Fox 8 in Cleveland. (airs Monday May 6th) He always brings up the mantra "Strive for Greatness" and he lives it. Wright State University Newsroom

https://www.youtube.com/user/WrightStateU Students at Fulton Elementary School in Springfield, Ohio, got a rare chance to shoot, dribble and pass with the Wright State University men’s basketball team. The team visited the school on Oct. 24 for the second year in a row, going through basketball drills with the students. The players interacted with hundreds of students from all six grades for several hours. “They’ve been really excited to get a basketball that bounces really well,” Jen Beatty, a physical education teacher at the school, said of the students. The basketball team, which hosts an exhibition game on Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. versus Notre Dame College from South Euclid, Ohio, donated a dozen basketballs to the elementary school that were used during the visit. Beatty said the players were great role models for the students. “Seeing people doing good things in the community and seeing people coming and being able to help is something that they can strive towards,” she said. Aftermath and Reaction: Election Analysis from Two Targeted Groups

The rhetoric being espoused by candidate Donald Trump and some of his surrogates during the campaign caused fear and trepidation within several groups of people in America: such as immigrants, Muslims, the LGBTQ community and African-Americans. Now that Trump has won the election and has become President-Elect Trump how do some of these groups feel about his ability to lead? Will their group be targeted for Presidential scrutiny or for negative actions to be taken by Presidential appointees? SPECTRUM endeavored to find some answers from members of two of these communities. We spoke with delfin bautista* -- the director of the LGBTQ Center at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio and an African-American mother and judge – Judge Gayle Williams Byers from South Euclid, Ohio in the southeast corner of Cuyahoga County near Cleveland. delfin claims the LGBTQ community is currently confused, dazed and in a state of frustration. Many, according to delfin, have a defeatist attitude and are girding themselves for regression and for fights to come. delfin states that progress has been made in civil rights over the last 10 years for the LGBTQ community but there are fears that all of the progress will disappear under a Trump Administration. There are special concerns since Vice President-Elect Mike Pence has taken over Trump’s transition efforts. delfin notes that Pence was a strong proponent of a religious freedom act in Indiana that was perceived as being discriminatory against gays, lesbians, and transgendered individuals. Pence also is a believer in “conversion therapies” to revert gay people “back” to being heterosexual even though such efforts have been debunked by the psychological and medical professions. Amidst the depression and despondency from the election, delfin has seen a new spark of spirit in many LGBTQ people and a sense of urgency to fight harder and stronger against prejudice and to avidly promote greater civil rights. Judge Gayle Byers Williams said she will give people at the top of the Trump Administration a chance and she touts the benefits of having three equal branches of government -- each exercising checks and balances on the other. She, however, expresses doubts that race relations will improve over the next four years. She said that she feels the real conversations about race and equality that had started in this country will cease and be replaced by heightened tensions, fear, and distrust. She also noted, however, that her teenage son reacted even more strongly to the election results and started talking about fleeing to Canada because he fears African-Americans will be targeted for persecution and hatred. He is a combination of angry, vocal and pensive all at once, according to Judge Gayle. Judge Gayle is more optimistic. She feels that change will not come from Washington and cannot be mandated from the top down despite what the Trump Administration might do. She feels that the new administration may breed a groundswell of grassroots/local counteractions that will build across the country. People will fight the perceived misuse or abuses of federal power at the local level with grassroots actions that will eventually negate any potential wrongdoing at upper levels. Both delfin and Judge Gayle said there is a time for some people to mourn the election results but that there is a sense of urgency to regroup and refocus on the issues that need to be resolved in both the LGBTQ and the African-American communities. *delfin bautista uses they/them pronouns and does not capitalize their name
