272 When Medicine Fails You - Start A Company Monica Molenaar and Anne Fulenwider, co-founders of Alloy, discuss their journey into menopause and the creation of their company. They highlight the lack of information and inconsistent advice they received from doctors, leading them to start a platform that provides women with credible information, support, and access to hormone replacement therapy. They emphasize the importance of validation and listening to women's concerns, as well as the need for streamlined and efficient menopause care. They also discuss the barriers to accessing testosterone for women and the need for change in regulations and education. The conversation explores the safety and benefits of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopausal women. The speakers discuss the fear and misinformation surrounding HRT, emphasizing that it is a safe and effective treatment for menopause symptoms and can also have protective effects on the heart, bones, and brain. They highlight the importance of preserving function and quality of life in menopausal women and the need for a shift in the conversation around hormones from disease prevention to preservation of function. The speakers also discuss the international perspective on menopause and the challenges women face in accessing hormone therapy in different countries. Takeaways The lack of information and inconsistent advice from doctors led Monica and Anne to start Alloy. This platform provides women with credible information, support, and access to hormone replacement therapy. Validation and listening to women's concerns are crucial in menopause care, as many women have been dismissed or invalidated by healthcare providers. The barriers to accessing testosterone for women include its classification as a schedule three drug, the lack of FDA-approved dose for women, and the need for in-person prescriptions by knowledgeable practitioners. The stigma around menopause needs to be challenged, as it is a powerful time in a woman's life where she can take control and live life on her own terms. The telehealth technology and behavior changes during the COVID-19 pandemic have created an opportunity for improved access to menopause care. Alloy is focused on creating solutions for the problems women face in perimenopause and menopause, including addressing vaginal health, systemic hormones, and skincare. The safety and efficacy of hormones, including testosterone, need to be emphasized to overcome misconceptions and provide women with the full range of benefits. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a safe and effective treatment for menopause symptoms and can have protective effects on the heart, bones, and brain. The fear and misinformation surrounding HRT are unfounded, and women should have access to this treatment to improve their quality of life. The conversation around hormones should shift from disease prevention to preservation of function and quality of life in menopausal women. Access to hormone therapy is a challenge in many countries, and there is a need to spread awareness and improve access to treatment internationally. https://www.myalloy.com/ https://www.instagram.com/monica.molenaar/ https://www.instagram.com/annefulenwider/ Special thanks to our sponsor, SOLV! 271. What Every Couple Needs To Know About Women's Hormones In this episode, Dr. Kelly Casperson discusses women's hormones and their impact on sexual health with sex therapist, Amanda Louder on her "Sex For Saints" podcast. She emphasizes that libido is influenced by biological, psychological, and social factors. The conversation focuses on perimenopause and postmenopause, highlighting the lack of education and information available to women in these stages of life. Dr. Casperson addresses the fear surrounding hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and explains that the Women's Health Initiative study in 2002 contributed to this fear. However, she emphasizes the numerous benefits of HRT, including decreased risk of heart disease, neurodegenerative disorders, musculoskeletal issues, and mood disorders. We discuss the importance of vaginal estrogen in maintaining vaginal health and preventing urinary tract infections (UTIs). We highlight the issues of cost and the FDA's black box warning on estrogen products, which she believes are outdated and misleading. Dr. Casperson also addresses the misconception around bioidentical hormones, explaining that they are the same as the hormones produced by the body and can be obtained through insurance-approved medications. She emphasizes the need for individualized hormone therapy and the importance of communication in navigating menopause and sexual health. Takeaways Libido is influenced by biological, psychological, and social factors. Perimenopause and postmenopause are stages of life that lack sufficient education and information for women. The fear surrounding hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is largely due to the Women's Health Initiative study in 2002. HRT has numerous benefits, including decreased risk of heart disease, neurodegenerative disorders, musculoskeletal issues, and mood disorders. Finding a knowledgeable healthcare provider and advocating for oneself is crucial in addressing women's sexual health concerns. Vaginal estrogen can be highly beneficial for women's sexual health, particularly in addressing issues such as chronic UTIs. Vaginal estrogen helps maintain vaginal health and reduces the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) by promoting a healthy acidic environment in the vagina. The cost of vaginal estrogen can vary significantly, but there are ways to find more affordable options, such as using online pharmacies and discount coupons. The FDA's black box warning on estrogen products is outdated and does not differentiate between systemic and vaginal estrogen. The safety of vaginal estrogen has been supported by multiple studies. Bioidentical hormones are the same as the hormones produced by the body and can be obtained through insurance-approved medications. The term 'bioidentical' is often used as a marketing tool. https://www.instagram.com/christiansexcoach/ https://amandalouder.com/blog/podcast/ Special thanks to our sponsor, SOLV! Dr. Eve Henry, an internal medicine physician, joins Dr. Kelly Casperson on the You're Not Broken podcast to discuss the importance of optimizing health span and preventing disease. They emphasize the need for a shift in the medical system from disease management to wellness and prevention. They also highlight the role of hormones in women's health, particularly during perimenopause. They discuss the benefits of hormone therapy for symptom management and prevention of conditions like Alzheimer's disease. They address common myths and misconceptions about hormones and provide insights into the use of progesterone and birth control options for perimenopausal women. In this part of the conversation, Eve and Kelly discuss the dosing and cycling of hormones during perimenopause and menopause. They talk about the variability in dosing and the benefits of cycling hormones. They also touch on the use of progesterone and estradiol in hormone therapy and the importance of finding the right doses for each individual. They discuss the role of DHEA in perimenopause and the potential benefits of supplementing with it. They also emphasize the importance of comprehensive health assessments, including lab work, DEXA scans, coronary calcium scores, and VO2 max testing, to assess cardiovascular risk and overall health. Takeaways The medical system needs to shift from disease management to wellness and prevention. Hormone therapy can be beneficial for symptom management and prevention of conditions like Alzheimer's disease. Progesterone is an important hormone during perimenopause and can help alleviate symptoms. There are various birth control options available for perimenopausal women. Regular monitoring and individualized treatment are key in hormone therapy. Dosing and cycling of hormones during perimenopause and menopause can vary based on individual needs and symptoms. Progesterone is used to protect the uterus and is typically dosed at 100 milligrams for uterine protection during continuous hormone therapy. Cycling hormones can be beneficial for some women, but it may be challenging to track and can be discontinued if it causes discomfort. DHEA supplementation may be helpful for increasing testosterone levels and improving symptoms of low testosterone. Comprehensive health assessments, including lab work, DEXA scans, coronary calcium scores, and VO2 max testing, are important for assessing cardiovascular risk and overall health during perimenopause and beyond. https://www.instagram.com/drevehenry/ Special thanks to our sponsor, SOLV! Dr. Maria Sophocles discusses her TED Talk on sex in midlife and the bedroom gap between men and women. She explains the physiological changes that occur in the vulva and vagina during midlife and how they can affect a woman's sex life. She emphasizes the importance of vaginal estrogen as a preventative medicine and the need for better education and communication between clinicians and patients. Dr. Sophocles also highlights the need for couples to have open and honest conversations about their sex life and the role of sex therapy in addressing sexual health issues. The conversation covers various topics related to gender roles, sexual pleasure, and the impact of menopause on libido. It emphasizes the importance of communication and breaking societal norms in order to achieve gender equity in the bedroom. The fear and misconceptions surrounding estrogen and its association with cancer are also addressed. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the power of education and open dialogue in changing societal attitudes towards sex and pleasure. Takeaways Physiological changes in the vulva and vagina during midlife can affect a woman's sex life. Vaginal estrogen is a safe and effective preventative medicine for addressing genitourinary changes. There is a need for better education and communication between clinicians and patients regarding sexual health. Couples should have open and honest conversations about their sex life to bridge the bedroom gap. Sex therapy can play a crucial role in addressing sexual health issues. Gender roles and societal norms often dictate women's role in the bedroom, leading to a lack of sexual pleasure and resentment. Women should feel empowered to prioritize their own pleasure and communicate their needs and desires to their partners. The loss of libido during menopause is a common concern for many women, but there are options available to address this issue. Fear and misconceptions surrounding estrogen and its association with cancer can prevent women from seeking treatment that could improve their sexual health. Education and open dialogue are essential in challenging societal attitudes towards sex and pleasure and promoting gender equity in the bedroom. https://www.instagram.com/mariasophoclesmd/ Dr. Sophocles TED talk https://mariasophoclesmd.com/ Special thanks to our sponsor, SOLV! Dr. Kelly Casperson shares her experience at the BC Sexual Health Research Networking Event at the University of British Columbia. She discusses various topics including sexual health, dating apps, virtual reality for vaginismus, and more. The event highlighted the importance of understanding the bio-psycho-social aspects of sexual health and the need for better sexual education. Dr. Casperson emphasizes that there are researchers and professionals dedicated to improving people's sex lives and that individuals are not alone in their struggles. Takeaways Sexual health encompasses the bio-psycho-social aspects of a person's well-being. Dating apps can perpetuate a narrative that dating is difficult and can have negative effects on mental health. Virtual reality shows promise as a tool for desensitization in the treatment of vaginismus. There is a need for better sexual education that addresses consent, gender-based violence, and the impact of technology. Special thanks to our sponsor, SOLV! As an American with Kenyan heritage and a multicultural upbringing that includes formative years in India, Elizabeth Kaiga brings a highly unique & necessary lens to the energy transition. Our CEO spoke with Elizabeth, DNV's Chief Commercial Officer for Energy Systems in North America, at her office in Virginia. They spoke about her unconventional career path in the energy industry - starting from when she interned for the United Nations Environmental Programme, to then working at several global professional service firms. We especially loved hearing from Elizabeth about how she has successfully navigated her career as someone with a multicultural background & who has often been an ‘outsider', as well as about the new energy equity offerings DNV is now providing to its clients. Elizabeth has been on the Board of WRISE for 7 years now & shared more with Catherine about the ways in which the organization is directly impacting lives through fellowships, job boards, mentoring, networking opportunities & its speakers bureau. She also highlighted the strong impact of WRISE's corporate sponsors, including Google, Edison Energy, SOLV, RWE, Cordelio Power, MCE, Orsted, Qcells, Lightsource bp, Copia Power, AES, Longroad Energy and DNV. Elizabeth has also been on the Board of Solar Sister, a nonprofit that has helped over 10,000 women in Sub-Saharan Africa (an emerging market) gain access to clean energy solutions in off-grid communities and create clean energy businesses. God lytting.Vi trenger din hjelp for å fortsette å lage Hverdagspsyken!

Venrock partners Bryan Roberts and Bob Kocher, speak with Heather Fernandez, co-founder and CEO of Solv, about Solv's mission, building more cap table diversity in tech, and the healthcare field today. Fernandez delves into Solv's Series C funding round where she created a special purpose vehicle (SPV) focused on women of color, bringing in first-time investors who wouldn't otherwise have access. Fernandez also shares how Solv is unlocking capacity with software, its pricing strategy, and its goals for the next 2-3 years.
If you're a fan of films, especially crime films, the advent of blockchain & NFTs as a new method of financing and producing them and disruptive small cap companies, then hold on to your chair for this story of life imitating art. Darkhorse Films is a UK blockchain digital entertainment & e-commerce business whose upcoming production slate includes 3 films telling the stories of some pretty notorious criminals, all of whom needed protection from other criminal elements in order to flourish their criminal enterprises. THE CRAZY PLOT TWIST The crazy twist in cinematic irony comes in with Darkhorse Films being acquired by a cybersecurity company (SoLVBL $SOLV) that provides immutable data authentication using advanced cryptography to protect both its films and digital assets used in the production of their films. Given the amount of Web3 fraud committed by hackers and wallet thieves in 2023, this crazy level of irony would have made even the great William Shakespeare stand up and applaud. But in a final twist of fate, if you think the story ends there, you're wrong ….. it's only the beginning as $SOLV and Darkhorse embark on an ambitious journey to create NFT powered, secure blockchain films of their own, as well as, take their technology stack to filmmakers around the world who have not been able to penetrate the traditional studio system. More than just lip service, acclaimed UK actor and film producer Terry Stone said: "FilmCoin is undoubtedly the most exciting project I've been involved with; I'm the First Film Producer in History to be making a slate of films entirely funded via a form of cryptocurrency and digital assets such as NFT's., THE $10M DEAL - AS SERIOUS AS THE FILM PLOT LINES Unlike a lot of the fluff that has tended to surround the Web3 world of blockchain, NFTs, cryptocurrencies and digital assets in 2022, the terms of this deal tell any astute investor it is as serious as the very plot lines of Darkhorses' films and the $SOLV cybersecurity systems protecting them, the highlights of which are as follows: $10.15 Million Acquisition Price Of Darkhorse Films $SOLV Shares For Acquisition Are Priced At 217% Premium To Market Darkhorse To Own 43% Of $SOLV Cash Portion Of Purchase Price Requires$1M Payable If Company Raises $4M Within 12 Months $1.5M Payable If Additional $6M Raised Within 24 Months Kaiser Akbar, CEO of SoLVBL stated: We believe that this acquisition is an exceptional first step to gaining a foothold in the European and North American cyber security markets. This acquisition almost doubles the size of our technology team, allowing us to on-board new customers quickly and efficiently, and will allow us to generate revenue expeditiously As you can probably begin to guess, one of the main purposes of this deal is to: Expand the SoLVBL suite of digital products, monetise its technology and to use its Q by SoLVBLTM flagship cybersecurity technology within new business verticals Generate potentially lucrative revenue stream in film, content production & film distribution markets THE DARKHORSE LINE UP OF FILMS INCLUDES FIRST FULLY CRYPTO FUNDED FILM AND OSCAR WINNER You wouldn't be a true movie fan and investor if you didn't want to hear about this amazing line up for 2022 / 2023 so take a look at this: 1. Tales From The Trap: First-Ever Film To Be Fully Funded By Cryptocurrency 2. Requiem For A King: The Rise and Fall of The Shah of Iran 3. King Of Crime If you'are as gripped as we are, then sit back and listen to this powerful interview with 3 members of this new great team!

Solv CEO and co-founder Heather Fernandez talks with Greylock marketing partner Elisa Schreiber about a unique fundraising strategy Solv undertook to add more women investors to the company's cap table. In late 2021, Solv was wrapping up its Series C round when Fernandez was encouraged by longtime investor and friend Kara Norton (Upfront Ventures) to launch a special purpose vehicle (SPV) aimed solely at women investors. Within 10 days, the SPV raised $3.5M from 75 women investors, 60% of whom were women of color and a majority were first-time investors. Fernandez and Schreiber discuss the process and provide a playbook for other entrepreneurs. Today's Tactical Tuesday is a compilation of my favorite moments from the recent George Hershman 2-part interview. If you missed that one, then you'll for sure want to queue up this more snack-able episode (but I'll bet it will leave you ready to commit to the longer version!) It was packed with great stories and advice, but it was also a long interview, and maybe you're short on time. So think of this as the SparkNotes or CliffsNotes version of those two back-to-back podcasts. George is a solar industry icon and one of my heroes in the industry. His leadership & industry accomplishments have set the bar for so many who see him as a mentor, boss and colleague. And, he brings unparalleled insights into the clean energy revolution from his vantage point as the CEO of SOLV Energy and board chair of the Solar Energy Association (SEIA). Todays, preview give you a glimpse of the doubleheader mega interview I mentioned, which you can listen to in its entirety in https://mysuncast.com/suncast-episodes/478 (SunCast Episodes 478 and 479). This week in Indian Startup News, Zomato's acquisition of Blinkit - A disaster or long term bet, BYJU's owned Whitehat Jr and Toppr fire 650+ people and Ola Shuts Used Cars And Quick Commerce Business. In Founder Spotlight, we have the founder and CEO of Unacademy, Gaurav Munjal, who recently opened first offline center in Kota and is now becoming hot favorite for students in offline space. In Funding news we have, Arzoo, Solv, Battery Smart and 10 other Indian startups raise more than $1 Million. 00:00 Introduction 00:06 Zomato's acquisition of Blinkit 02:58 Founder Spotlight 05:20 Funding Analysis 06:33 Sponsored Segment 08:16 BYJU's owned Whitehat Jr and Toppr fire 650+ people 09:25 Ola Shuts Used Cars And Quick Commerce Business Zomato's acquisition of Blinkit: Last week, Zomato had finally concluded its acquisition of quick commerce startup Blinkit and in less than four days of this acquisition, Zomato's share has fallen more than 21% which means that more than 13,000 Crore Rs of Zomato's market value has been wiped off. This seems a bad decision in the short term as Blinkit is a loss making company but Zomato realized that food delivery and grocery delivery have a lot of synergies as both are hyperlocal businesses and the company already has a fleet of delivery people. And that's why they are thinking of this as a long term bet. Founder Spotlight - Gaurav Munjal: This week we have Co-founder and CEO of Unacademy, Gaurav Munjal, and the reason for him to feature here is the aggressive strategy he along with his team is taking at Unacademy to disrupt the offline coaching space in India, and especially in a city called Kota. Gaurav is known for killing off the competition by acquiring them or bleeding them dry by poaching the talent and this is exactly what is happening in Kota right now. More than 40 teachers from Allen have already joined Unacademy and this battle is heating up. Funding this week: This week saw at least 13 Indian startups raising more than $314 Million. B2B Marketplaces - Arzoo raised $70 Million Fintech startups - Progcap raised $40 Million EV startups - Battery Smart raised $25 Mn Real Estate - PropShare raised $50 Million BYJU's owned Whitehat Jr and Toppr fire 650+ people: BYJU's owned Whitehat Jr and Toppr have laid off 300 and 350+ employees respectively. Company has termed these lay offs as ‘business restructuring' and according to Inc42, sales and marketing team were the worst affected. Edtech wasn't the only sector that saw layoffs, as B2B Ecommerce Unicorn Udaan has also laid off around 180 employees to cut costs. Another startup called Nova Benefits, which is a Bengaluru-based insurtech startup, has also laid off around 70 employees. Ola Shuts Used Cars And Quick Commerce Business: Bhavish Aggarwal led Ola has decided to shut down its used car division Ola Cars and its quick commerce business, Ola Dash. The company will now focus on its electric vehicles and mobility businesses from here on. According to the company, they are reassessing their priorities at this point and it seems quick commerce isn't their priority as of now. Company will be using the lessons it learnt from it's Ola Cars business for making go to market strategy for Ola Electric.
George Hershman is the CEO of SOLV Energy (formerly known as Swinerton Renewable Energy), a company that, in my tenure in the industry, has grown to become the largest utility-scale solar Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) company in the US. I've been impressed at every turn how George, and his all-star team at SOLV, has consistently delivered the highest quality on almost every standard, excels at employee retention & growth, and is generally considered the premium brand when it comes to EPC firms (both in perception & price!). So, naturally I've long-wanted to get George in the SunCast booth to hear the story of how it all came together, and where it's going from here. This is Part 1 of a 2-part interview where I do just that. George began working for general contractor, Swinerton Builders, in 1997. In 2008, he was tapped to build the company's presence in the growing solar sector. George was employee number-one at Swinerton Renewable Energy, a company which quickly grew into the country's largest grid-level solar installer and the #1 Solar Contractor in America. George has spent his career in general construction management. His wide expertise in energy issues, trade policy, construction projects, and the technical hurdles that the solar industry currently faces gave plenty of headroom for a wide-ranging discussion, so we navigate topics from across the spectrum of startup culture and corporate growth and we get into the challenges inherent in growing anything as big as what his company has become. In 2021, Swinerton Renewable Energy and its wholly owned subsidiary SOLV, Inc. merged into a single company, SOLV Energy. George and I get into the details of the decision to pursue the merger and spinout from Swinerton. As CEO of SOLV Energy, he continues to position the company at the forefront of the renewable energy economy. Fun Fact, George is also an avid sailor, recently participating in San Diego's Hot Rum Series with the boat he co-owns (called “GoodEnergy”, in case you get the chance to meet him in a happy someday and want a good starter conversation!). Hope you enjoy this Part 1, and please queue up Part 2! This is Part 2 of a 2-part interview with George Hershman, CEO of SOLV Energy. If you missed Part 1, please do queue it up, and I would encourage you to listen to them in order. ;-) George is leading a powerful transformation of the company he helped form & eventually spin out of Swinerton Renewable Energy over the past 13 yrs, and he and his team have positioned the company as a clear frontrunner of the renewable energy economy. As a prominent business leader in the solar industry, George brings over 30 years of construction experience and is widely recognized for his expertise in the engineering, construction, and management of solar power plants. This second half of the discussion looks into his work at the Solar Energy Industries Association (where he's now serving a second term as Chairman of the Board) and the opportunities that we have as an industry to create hundreds of thousands of new jobs in the coming years. George also shares his candid views on leadership & team building, the legacy of mentors in his own career, and how he thinks about building talent among his own team. “I want entrepreneurship to be infectious in this business, and I want to support it.” - George Hershman SOLV is a success story on so many fronts, and It was an honor to get a chance to hear it from George himself. As Jim Rohn says, “Success leaves clues”, and in the case of Swinerton & SOLV Energy the fingerprint & evidence of their impact on our industry is evident and will endure for decades to come. We have Paul Simon to thank for Jack McGowan's great legacy in Portland. And we're not talking about one of his lyrics, but a face-to-face, serendipitous conversation on the streets of Manhattan. The McGowan legacy includes Kink radio, Mt. Hood Jazz Festival, Zoo Concerts, Mayor Bud Clark's administration, PM Magazine, SOLV, the 9/11 Freedom Flights and more. This episode is a Portland history lesson that starts un 1970 and lasts more than three decades. It includes stories about Bud Clark's night on the town with Tom Brokaw, Mildred Schwab's flatulent dog, and the quote from fellow Northeast transplant Tom McCall that Jack lives by, and we all should.
On our 2nd episode, Jessica and April catch up with Heather Fernandez, CEO and Co-Founder of Solv Health and Board Director at Atlassian. Heather started her career working on the McCain presidential campaign before finding her first job in Silicon Valley at a PR firm. In her own words, “it's ok to be non-linear! I think there's this meme in tech that you have to have been working out of a garage...building a bunch of things to become a tech founder. And it's just not true.” Heather spent nearly a decade at Trulia, joining as the 12th employee and grew to become the GM and SVP running advertising product, marketing and sales before the acquisition by Zillow Group for $2.5B. She shares the real talk of hypergrowth: “I could talk about my Trulia history in four very beautiful bullet points. And it's like, wow, how great. But the reality of any company is there's a shitload of grind in there.” Bill Gurley led Solv's Series A and Heather shares lessons she learned from him: “consumer marketplaces and great consumer technology companies are oftentimes amplifying a consumer trend, not creating a totally new paradigm.” And lastly, we discuss how to lead an organization amidst twin challenges of massive growth and the chaos of Covid. “There were not pivots as much as there were massive accelerations of things that we plan to do that all of a sudden became the imperative to do.” Each week, we wrap up with a Shoutout to people who've inspired and helped us along the way. This episode, April and Heather share what they've learned from Jennifer Tejada, CEO of Pager Duty. The #ANGELS Pod brings you conversations about the latest tech trends with the people inventing and shaping them in Silicon Valley and beyond. Hosted by the co-founders of #ANGELS, an investment collective: Jessica Verrilli, April Underwood, Jana Messerschmidt, Chloe Sladden, Katie Stanton, and Vijaya Gadde. We cover personal stories about breaking into tech and scaling up, and inside looks at the most interesting startups, from the people building them. This podcast is just getting started and we'd love your feedback. You can reach us on Twitter @HashtagAngels and thanks in advance for listening!
