EYE on NPI: Skyworks Si3404 and Si3406x Power over Ethernet (PoE) Powered Device Chips

Adafruit Industries

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 13, 2023 10:45

This week's EYE ON NPI is an EYE in the SKY, as we're featuring our first NPI from Skyworks: the Skyworks Si3404 and Si3406x Power over Ethernet [PoE] Powered Device Chips (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/silicon-laboratories/si3404-and-si3406x-power-over-ethernet-powered-device-chips). PoE is a standard, supported by many Ethernet hubs and switches (https://www.tp-link.com/us/solution/poe/) that allows a device connected to the hub to request +48V power over some of the Ethernet lines in Cat-5 cabling. Since many devices need Ethernet for speed and reliability - cameras, phone systems, printers, standalone monitors, and door entry systems, for example - you only need a single cable. These chips, originally from Silicon Labs and now made and sold by Skyworks, allow product designers to quickly add PoE support to their Ethernet products, saving space, complexity and wiring because a separate power supply is no longer needed.e First up, if you're wondering: "wow Skyworks, where have I seen that name before?" That's right! It was the California fabrication facility (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Such_Great_Heights#Music_video) where The Postal Service's Such Great Heights video was shot (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wrsZog8qXg). The original video even featured the Skyworks logos on the chips - now it's blurred out. But that's a great excuse for us to mention that there's a Postal Service/Death Cab 20th Anniversary Tour this fall and we are definitely getting tickets (https://giveuptransatlanticismtour.com/). But back to PoE chips! We watched a discussion video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEhbVpYFvk0) about the history of this chip line, we were struck by the observation that the reason PoE is so popular for office buildings is that it's very disruptive and expensive to get electricians to run power outlets everywhere. But running Ethernet can be done by the IT department because the voltages are so low that no special licensing or permitting is needed. Ethernet can be run behind drywall, around door frames, or under drop floors without worrying about electrocution or fire hazards. And you don't have to worry about DC plug adapters or voltage mismatches. The Si3404 can provide up to 13W (https://www.digikey.com/short/49dqqh9m), the Si3406 can do 25W (https://www.digikey.com/short/35jn99tc) but are otherwise very similar. Other than a few passives and full-wave bridge rectifiers, you only need the flyback inductor-transformer (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/switching-converter-smps-transformers/168) - for isolated setups, it's a little more complicated. The Si3404 can also perform as a non-isolated buck converter for very small and low cost designs. The output voltage is set by a simple feedback resistor divider. Designs are compact, less than 1 square inch, for most use cases. Both the Skyworks Si3404 (https://www.digikey.com/short/49dqqh9m) and Si3406 (https://www.digikey.com/short/35jn99tc) are in stock right now at Digi-Key for immediate shipment. There are also eval boards (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/silicon-laboratories/si3404-and-si3406x-power-over-ethernet-powered-device-chips) that come with buck/flyback/isolated setups so you can test them as replacements for your current power supply to make sure which schematic you'll follow. Order them today for immediate delivery - through the Postal Service or whatever your favorite carrier may be - and you'll be making your IoT designs easy-to-power by tomorrow afternoon!

In recent years, oldies radio stations have inched further into the future - and have begun to focus on favorites from the '70s (and even '80s) rather than from the '50s and '60s. So we wondered, forty years from now - in 2052 - will songs of the '90s, '00s and '10s make it onto oldies radio? What will be in heavy rotation - and what will be left off of the playlist? We ask Chris Molanphy - author of the "100 & Single" Billboard charts column in the Village Voice – and we talk with Scott Shannon - who was, back in 2012, a WPLJ host and creator of the syndicated radio network The True Oldies Channel - about the state of oldies today.  Check out Chris Molanphy's playlist (chronological listing): Twenty songs we’ll still be hearing on oldies radio in 2052 by Chris Molanphy (In chronological order by original release) 1. Sir Mix-a-Lot, “Baby Got Back” (1992) – This hit was underestimated by critics in ’92, compared with Arrested Development’s “Tennessee” (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 1) 2. Pearl Jam, “Yellow Ledbetter” (1992) – An example of how classic-rock acts are eventually remembered for a song that wasn’t their biggest radio hit. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 97) 3. Radiohead, “Creep” (1993) – Still their U.S. biggest hit, and though they’ve recorded greater albums this is still most likely to be in rotation decades from now. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 34) 4. Snoop (Doggy) Dogg, “Gin and Juice” (1994) – Because a great line is a great line, and “With my mind on my money and my money on my mind” is a great one. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 8) 5. Mariah Carey, “Always Be My Baby” (1996) – She was the biggest pop star of the ’90s, but a lot of her hits got burned out long ago; this one hasn’t. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 1) 6. Sublime, “What I Got” (1996) – Because bros and stoners, like it or not, are going to have a new “The Joker”/”Slow Ride.” (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: N/A—Airplay chart peak No. 29) 7. Blur, “Song 2” (1997) – Sports will still be the way we hear a lot of pop songs. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: N/A—Airplay chart peak No. 55) 8. Backstreet Boys, “I Want It That Way” (1999) – Great song; but also the Chinese brothers’ lip-dub (2005) was one of YouTube’s first viral videos—the future of hits. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 6) 9. Eminem, “Lose Yourself” (2002) – He won an Oscar for it, essentially because it’s this generation’s “Gonna Fly Now”/“Eye of the Tiger.” (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 1) 10. Coldplay, “Clocks” (2002) – Every generation has its easy-listening songs. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 29) 11. The White Stripes, “Seven Nation Army” (2003) – Because you can’t stop a good bassline, even when it’s actually played on a guitar. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 76) 12. The Postal Service, “Such Great Heights” or Yeah Yeah Yeahs, “Maps” (2003) – One of these will be the “Just Like Heaven” of our era—the hipster love song. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: N/A, No. 87) 13. OutKast, “Hey Ya!” (2003) – Burned out in its heyday but will probably never die. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 1) 14. Kelly Clarkson, “Since U Been Gone” (2005) – It will be the Millennial generation’s “sass anthem,” akin to “Respect” or “I Will Survive” (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 2) 15. Gnarls Barkley, “Crazy” (2006) – Because of its malleability as a song; decades hence it might be a folk classic. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 2) 16. Rihanna, “Umbrella” (2007) – It’s the lyrics: beneath its hip-hop exterior lie the bones of an old-time, sentimental love ballad. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 1) 17. Beyoncé, “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” (2008) – Weddings alone guarantee this a permanent hit-parade spot. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 1) 18. Jay-Z, “Empire State of Mind” (2009) – Rap’s Frank Sinatra ensured himself decades of royalties with his own Yankee-game-worthy perennial. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 1) 19. Lady Gaga, “Bad Romance” (2009) – Its nonsense lyric is “wamp-baba-lula” worthy; its video is a classic. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 2) 20. Taio Cruz, “Dynamite” (2010) – I’ve never met a kid under 10 who doesn’t love it, and they will all be in their fifties in 2052. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 2)

Through rain, through sleet, through car accidents and possible cuffing, the Bullies will still deliver -- if perhaps a week behind. But just because we're not the gosh dang Postal Service doesn't mean this episode won't reach Such Great Heights. The always-innovative Joe Petrone puts his gem of a game-show spin on Weird News; the Hypothetical tosses the boys asunder in the wrinkles of time; and another funeral for the corner that housed the dating app designed to be deleted raises the striking possibility that soon the specter of dating will loom large over all segments. Enough about my wife, though! You've got EPISODE 35 to get to, so put on your crab bib and get crackin'! FOLLOW US ON TWITTER @BenderStreet and BIRDS MAKE GREAT PETS

Forever Dog Presents: Kevin McDonald’s Rock Opera! The year is 1991. Kevin is living in Toronto working on a small little HBO show called Kids In The Hall. He’s also in a toxic relationship with a woman named Cheater, who regularly cheats on him. But Kevin is aware of this devastating truth and does what any logical person would do in this situation: he asks Cheater to marry him (9:01). Dave Foley, future star of A Bugs Life (played by Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard), pleads with Kevin to not marry Cheater (13:00). Meanwhile, a Texas producer hired by Lorne Michaels books Kevin & Dave on the Joan Rivers Show (15:30), whisking him away to the Big Apple just before Cheater says they shouldn’t get married (16:55). Kevin is despondent, but Dave drags him out of bed for a raucous night on the town (20:47) — a night that involves copious amounts of alcohol, an AIDS benefit, more cheating, and an ambiguous moral (22:30). After the opera, Kevin interviews Ben Gibbard (41:11) and invites him to play a two-song acoustic set to close the night: Teardrop Windows (57:00) and Such Great Heights (59:48). Crank the volume, slip into your most expensive outfit, and tap along to the pulsing rhythm of Kevin McDonald’s Rock Opera, which in this short time, has already been lauded as “the best podcast rock opera of the week." 00:00:00 - This week we tackle one of the (literally) biggest debates in the solar system: which planet has the largest mountain? For awhile, Mars seemed the clear winner, but new research suggests Earth might still have a horse in this race. Tune in to find out what Charlie and Abe think of this new discovery, and read up on volcanoes in general with this handy volume.   00:18:43 - If books containing world records are any indication, disputes are best settled over a pint, which we fortunately have a segment for just that. Charlie kicks things off with a High West Double Rye, much to the envy of Ryan who still manages to enjoy a mojito made with Panamanian rum. Abe, amidst all our other nonsense, does his best to sing the praises of his southern hemisphere Moa Five Hop IPA.   00:27:13 - However, we're hard-pressed to sing the praises of the new found-footage sci-fi horror film "based on the real fake phenomena" of the Brown Mountain Lights in Alien Abduction on this week's Trailer Trash Talk! (Also, here's what a camera falling out of a plane actually looks like. Enjoy.)   00:38:22 - Speaking of abductions. Imagine you were just tooling around, doing your thing, when all of the sudden you were snatched, transported to some foreign lab, had 1/3 of your blood drained, then were dropped back in your house. That'd be weird, right? Well that's exactly what happens to horseshoe crabs every year, all in the name of science.   00:51:41 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like alien abductions; you never see them coming, and nobody really believes they're real anyways. Charlie begins things with two new supremely negative iTunes reviews suggesting that we are both way to 'snug" and should eat more meat-filled pop tarts. Hopefully the Paleoposse will soon correct this negative shift. Ryan rebounds with a plethora of donations, e-mails, and a series of tweets (regarding. our. motto.) from our newest superfan Morgan M. Thanks, Moran, we're literally overwhelmed! Abe finishes things with a question from Eric M. about science and the media. A topic oft covered but not yet by Abe, so apt for this episode! In particular, Eric wants to know how the Nobels might be made as cool as the Oscars, and we're afraid we might have to present some bad news on that front. (Also, yes, Ryan was wrong about Einstein's nobel prize, save yourself the typing.) Finally, in our clunky yet approrpriate Amazon segment, Charlie suggests a depressing book called The Bet or an awesome turntable called Pro-Ject. Be sure to check out Ryan on some recent episodes of Star Wars Minute and Deconstructing Comics!     Thanks for listening and be sure to check out the Brachiolope Media Network for more great science podcasts!     Music for this week's show: Such Great Heights - The Postal Service Rye Whiskey - Tex Ritter My Carolina Home - Fred Kirby Addicted to Blood - The Woody Pines
