Abstract: The functional complementarity of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and optokinetic reflex (OKR) allows for optimal combined gaze stabilization responses (CGR) in light. While sensory substitution has been reported following complete vestibular loss, the capacity of the central vestibular system to compensate for partial peripheral vestibular loss remains to be determined. Here, we first demonstrate the efficacy of a 6-week subchronic ototoxic protocol in inducing transient and partial vestibular loss which equally affects the canal- and otolith-dependent VORs. Immunostaining of hair cells in the vestibular sensory epithelia revealed that organ-specific alteration of type I, but not type II, hair cells correlates with functional impairments. The decrease in VOR performance is paralleled with an increase in the gain of the OKR occurring in a specific range of frequencies where VOR normally dominates gaze stabilization, compatible with a sensory substitution process. Comparison of unimodal OKR or VOR versus bimodal CGR revealed that visuo-vestibular interactions remain reduced despite a significant recovery in the VOR. Modeling and sweep-based analysis revealed that the differential capacity to optimally combine OKR and VOR correlates with the reproducibility of the VOR responses. Overall, these results shed light on the multisensory reweighting occurring in pathologies with fluctuating peripheral vestibular malfunction. Copy rights belong to original authors. In episode number seven, we meet Jacopo Tagliabue and discuss behavioral testing for recommender systems and experiences from ecommerce. Before Jacopo became the director of artificial intelligence at Coveo, he had founded tooso, which was later acquired by Coveo. Jacopo holds a PhD in cognitive intelligence and made many contributions to conferences like SIGIR, WWW, or RecSys. In addition, he serves as adjunct professor at NYU.In this episode we introduce behavioral testing for recommender systems and the corresponding framework RecList that was created by Jacopo and his co-authors. Behavioral testing goes beyond pure retrieval accuracy metrics and tries to uncover unintended behavior of recommender models. RecList is an adaption of CheckList that applies behavioral testing to NLP and which was proposed by Microsoft some time ago. RecList comes with an open-source framework with ready set datasets for different recommender use-cases like similar, sequence-based and complementary item recommendations. Furthermore, it offers some sample tests to make it easier for newcomers to get started with behavioral testing. Paul Tagliabue, the former NFL commissioner who also is co-chair of the RISE Board of Directors, speaks with outgoing RISE CEO Jocelyn Benson at the sixth annual DISC Sports Diversity & Inclusion Symposium. Their conversation was a keynote event of the symposium, which was hosted by RISE on Oct. 9 and 10 in Detroit. DISC stands for the Diversity & Inclusion Sports Consortium, whose members represent the country’s major sports leagues and organizations. They gather each year to discuss and create tangible solutions that drive greater diversity and inclusion in today’s sports culture. In this conversation, Tagliabue discusses his experience advancing diversity and inclusion throughout his personal and professional life and the core values that are required to create that type of culture. He also talks about his time leading the NFL and the impact of athlete activism.

In this episode I interview Anna Tagliabue from luxury faux fur company Pelush in New York. Originally from Milan, Italy, Anna moved to New York two decades ago and took a job working in the fur department at Fendi where she worked for the next eight years. When the brand launched a faux fur, Anna was captivated by it, but since it sold for a lot less than the animal furs and was popular with many customers, Fendi decided to no longer do faux fur. Anna bought the coat with a staff discount and began her search for high-end animal-free furs. After leaving Fendi, she worked for 13 years at Prada on Madison Avenue as a personal shopper for high-wealth women on Manhattan's upper east side – where her Pelush studio is currently based. Five years ago, with the help of her friend, Italian haute couture designer Antonio Grimaldi, she started to learn the other side of the fashion business, including how to order and who to meet, and two years ago she launched Pelush – which means ‘plush' in Italian – to create what she calls a ReFAUXlution. Since then, her spectacular coats – that look and feel like real fur – have been worn by Helen Mirren (complete with a Humane Society anti-fur pin), four-time Grammy-award-winning jazz musician and bassist Esperanza Spalding and opera star Diana Damrau. Anna's fashion shows, including the two she's held as part of New York Fashion Week, are akin to performance art pieces, featuring dramatic music and animal activists of all ages and backgrounds walking the runways.
