Why do humans need art? Hidden within the answer to that question is a profound truth about the human experience. Join me as we travel around the world to narrow down three primary reasons why humans need art. In our quest for the answer we will explore Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel, the Game of Thrones TV show, the poetry of Emily Dickinson, Carl Jung's art therapy methods, Mozart's Requiem, and the visionary art of Alex Gray. Get your thinking caps on, this one's a bonafide deep dive. ---- To become a patron of this show, and access exclusive Creativity Tip mini-episodes, please visit: https://www.patreon.com/mjdorian ---- Visit the NEW Creative Codex Subreddit, and join the conversation: https://www.reddit.com/r/CreativeCodex/ ---- All the music in this episode was written & recorded by MJDorian except: 'Lacrymosa' from Mozart's Requiem, as conducted by Erich Leinsdorf. First Draft Episode #215: Leigh Barudgo Leigh Barudgo, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Shadow and Bone series, the Six of Crows duology, and the King of Scars duology, discusses her first adult novel, Ninth House. This episode was brought to you by Freedom — upgrade to Premium and use code FIRSTDRAFT for 40% off a yearly or Forever plan! LINKS AND TOPICS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE Please check out Leigh’s two previous First Draft interviews, here and here! The Grishaverse has been developed by Netflix as a TV show Brandon Sanderson is the author of the Mistborn series, the Stormlight Archive series, and the Elantris series, and Leigh notes that he writes one million books and sees way, way far ahead as a writer NPR’s laudatory review for King of Scars had to include a lot of backstory, since technically it’s the sixth book in the Grishaverse Leigh could not wait for a friend to catch up on the past seasons of Stranger Things before watching the third season (unlike with Game of Thrones where she gave him time to catch up) Leigh loves how The Legend of Korra expanded on the universe established in Avatar: The Last Airbender (speaking of Avatar, have you listened to the First Draft interview with Michael Dante DiMartino, co-creator of the Avatar universe??) I risk a spoiler by mentioning the end of Laini Taylor’s Strange the Dreamer series… Curious readers should definitely pick up Daughter of Smoke and Bone and read Laini’s fantasy books all through - and listen to her First Draft interview here! When I was fortunate enough to moderate a panel on worldbuilding at BookCon, NK Jemisin—New York Times bestselling author of the Broken Earth trilogy and The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms series—brought up the Arthur C. Clarke’s third law, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” Leigh hopes to avoid the George R. R. Martin scenario — referencing the fact that the Game of Thrones TV show caught up, and then surpassed, Martin’s pace of writing A Song of Ice and Fire, the series the show is based on Leigh’s editor for Ninth House is Noah Eaker, editorial director at Random House. The Princess Bride by William Goldman (also a prolific screenwriter of movies like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All the President’s Men) was entirely about digressions, and that is what made it so perfect. Jodie Foster and Anderson Cooper were both in Manuscript senior society Leigh points writers to Robin LaFevers’ Instagram account (and listen to her First Draft interview) and Susan Dennard’s newsletter, Misfits and Dreamers (and listen to her First Draft interview) for amazing craft advice Authors like Kelly Link, Lev Grossman, Joe Hill, and Stephen King (!!!), and Charlaine Harris have given Ninth House props. The guys squeeze a lot in a short time: Rebranding, getting the word out about diplomacy groups around the world, Amby shares his efforts to get a Diplomacy community going in Brisbane & how you can do the same, new variants, site updates, billionaires & the good ol' Australian democracy sausage. Intro The guys stuff up the podcast entry and then get into an argument about pronouncing Toowong before talking a little about the Royal Exchange hotel, known locally as the RE (0 mins 5 secs) The guys introduce their drinks (2 mins 20 secs) Face-to-face and old school wisdom Amby and Kaner discuss rebranding the podcast to reflect both face-to-face and online Diplomacy (3 mins 40 secs) The website now has a Google Map showing where people can find Diplomacy groups, or can advise their group/interest in creating a group (7 mins) Amby talks about his efforts to get a Diplomacy community up and running in Brisbane, and what you can do to copy their strategy. The guys have almost got enough people who’ve expressed an interest in playing a game face-to-face in Brisbane (10 mins) Amby has finished reading the Diplomacy chapter of “The Playboy Winner’s Guide to Board Games” written by Jon Freeman or… Byjon Freeman. He reads a couple of choice quotes and then discusses its strategies for playing each of the seven players’ countries (17 mins) Kaner reads up the Italian section and after some more drinks they discuss the strategy suggested for playing Italy (22 mins) New variants, updates & democracy sausages Kaner discusses his anonymous games including the new 1937 A World At War variant by michael_b at vDip. They talk about the imbalances in the game and Amby puts on his history nerd hat. They find the approach to sea territories really interesting (26 mins) While talking vDiplomacy they discuss the coding changes to the site that came across from webDip. The guys both love the changes to the Hall of Fame that now includes a list for people who’ve played in the past 6 months and kick off a run through of the Top 20 (36 mins 30 secs) Kaner discusses forum conversation between the merits of sea lanes to break stalemate lines vs stacking. He uses the example of stacking proposed in the upcoming variant Dawn of the Enlightenment by David E Cohen. Amby mentions one of David’s variants - Conquest of the Americas - is currently being proposed over at PlayDip (40 mins 20 secs) After lunch the guys mention they had an off-tape discussion about Amby’s Divided States game. They both mention they signed up for the Funboat game. Amby discusses a story about the ship in the “Love Boat” TV series from the 70’s (52 mins) They talk about the idea of recording players in a game that could be used to give people an idea of gameplay. Kaner suggests doing this in an online game while Amby thought it lends itself to a face-to-face game (54 mins) SPOILER ALERT - The guys talk about the Game of Thrones TV show (1 hr 1 mins) They talk briefly about the similarities and differences between the Game of Thrones game and Diplomacy (1 hr 4 mins) Amby mentions a Forbes article about a Matt Calkins, a US software billionaire, who happens to be a Diplomacy player (1 hr 6 mins) Kaner mentions the upcoming Australian election. They discuss the Australian tradition of getting a Democracy Sausage and a politician promising to “Make Australia Great” (1 hr 11 mins) They then wrap it all up (1 hr 14 mins) Just a reminder you can support the show by giving it 5 stars on iTunes or Stitcher. And don't forget if you want to help improve the audio equipment... or get the guys more drunk, you can also donate at Patreon. Lastly, don't forget to subscribe so you get the latest Diplomacy Games episodes straight to your phone! Venue: Royal Exchange Hotel, Brisbane Drinks of choice: Kaner - James Squire's Swindler Pacific Ale Amby - Baily & Baily, Jump N Jive Shiraz Thanks as always to Dr Dan aka "The General" for his rockin' intro tune. Never know, we may get him into a face-to-face game soon!
"She's not going to make a difference!!" - circa 2019 Bryan "B-Money" Bryan gives a rare once-in-a-lifetime concession that his bold statement from last episode was wrong and we rub it in. We then recap the highs and lows of the epic battle from the episode and talk about how we think the Game of Thrones (TV show, not books) will end.

Cook County has dropped its 16 felony charges against actor, singer, and gay Tupac Jussie Smollett, and now all of his troubles are over! If only it were that easy. We also discuss the passing of Nipsey Hustle, Tim Burton's live-action remake of "Dumbo", and lots more spoiler-heavy discussion of Jordan Peele's "Us," because it's awesome enough for it! After 74 whole episodes, we are happy to receive a visit from the Podfather himself - Stephen Buonocore of Stronghold Games. For this episode, we experimented a bit with our usual podcast format so we could have some fun. For the first half, we talk about some recent expansions for Stronghold Games we really enjoy - Not Alone: Exploration (5:00) and The Pursuit of Happiness: Community (9:11). Then we preview some upcoming games from Stronghold - Indian Summer (13:41) and Noria (17:00). I recorded a short note about this part of the pod right at the jump, so please check that out. Afterwards, we really let our hair down and geek out about one of our favorite games of all time - War of the Ring (26:51). We talk about its theme, its length and balancing, and also note a very impressive, fan-made solo mode for it: https://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/141333/queller-bot-war-ring-solo-play. We then carry about all sorts of topics from there, including a chunky digression into the Game of Thrones TV show that we put beyond a spoiler wall. As always, we hope you enjoy the conversation!
In this episode we chat about what happens when books go from page to screen in Adaptations! In the process we argue about lots of stuff (as usual) and you learn more than you ever wanted to know about manga sound effects! Singer, songwriter and The Hold Steady frontman Craig Finn talks with Recode's Peter Kafka about his new solo album, "We All Want the Same Things." Finn still enjoys the life of a touring musician but explains why it's unlikely that The Hold Steady will do another big multi-city tour in the near future. Even though the world is politically divided, he says, music can still play a big role in building communities and friendships among strangers. Finn also discusses working with Bruce Springsteen, opening for The Rolling Stones and adapting lyrics written by George R.R. Martin into a song for the "Game of Thrones" TV show.
