Send us a Text Message. On our 83rd episode of Fabulous Film & Friends we're driving headfirst into the maelstrom as we discuss ALL of director George Miller's post-apocalyptic Mad Max movies including the newly released Furiosa. What's that you say? Didn't you just review The Road Warrior on your recent Australian Apocalypse podcast? True enough! But! We glossed over an important ingredient in the film's success and we're going to make amends as we break down all the  Mad Maxes.  I'm joined this week by my kid sister, the renowned English lit snob and biker movie enthusiast Roseanne Caputi and returning to the program after a year-long spell are both author and hypnotherapist Joe Field and erstwhile photographer, musician, podcaster and now website owner Kendrick WrightThe synopses: Mad Max is set “a few years” into the future where society is breaking down and car and motorcycle gangs rule the road striking fear into the hearts of ordinary schmoes just trying to survive.  Main Force Patrol officer Max Rockatansky  has everything ]  taken from him, when his wife and kid are killed by the evil Toecutter and a soul-crushed Max becomes a one-man killing force, The Road Warrior/Mad Max 2  raises the stakes of its predecessor, and calls out the societal issue as a great war between two tribes and picks up the story with Max travelling the barren, hellish, post-apocalyptic highways and stumbling upon an evil road gang led by a brute named Lord Humungus. Humungus is hellbent on invading a compound belonging to a group of  civilized and intelligent settlers who have built an oasis around the last of the oil wells and have running lights and supplies. Losing numbers and their morale under the constant attacks of Humungus, the settlers hatch a plan to escape the vermin on wheels and flee to the coast with their oil in tow. With the help of Max and a pilot called the Gyro Captain, the settlers are given a chance to survive and a little notion called hope. “ In Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome Max, now a full-fledged nomadic warrior, has all his possessions stolen and in trying to track them down, finds a sleazy desert trading post called Bartertown. Max strikes a bargain with the town's ruler Aunty Entity in order to regain his possessions.  When Max refuses to kill a simple man, he is sent out into the desert to die but is saved by a tribe of kids looking for a hero.  Mad Max: Fury Road finds Max imprisoned in a rock fortress called the Citadel and forced into being a blood supplier for the sickly War Boys of the cult warlord leader Immortan Joe. When Joe's chief transportation lieutenant Imperator Furiosa betrays Joe and smuggles his wives from Joe's harem to bring them to the safety of the Green Place, Joe's Army and the armies of the neighboring Bullet Town and Gas Town give a desperate chase to get Joe's wives back. During the chaos, Max escapes captivity and forms an uneasy alliance with Furiosa as the two hurtle down Fury Road in an epic chase for their lives and the future of civilization. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga –  a franchise first prequel and continuity driven story of Young Furiosa, how she lost  her mother, her true love and her arm at the hands of the demagogue Dr. Dementus, a cruel rabble rouser who starts a wasteland war with Immortatan Joe and the leaders of the of Bulletown and Gas Town.

Witness me, Slackers! This week is a petal to the metal episode. No chit chat, no personal anecdotes from the week, nada - just straight out the gate just like the opening of every Mad Max movie. George Miller knows to keep all that pesky dialogue to a minimum and let the story unfold visually. From the very first installment, Max Rockatansky has been one of the most interesting cinematic characters, in large part because he says so little. Whether Max is played by Mel Gibson or Tom Hardy, so much is expressed via facial expressions and the chaos happening all around him. Paired with some memorable villains, and you get cinematic gold. Speaking of villains, what a list of names: Toecutter. Night Rider. Lord Humongous. Wez. Aunty Entity. Ironbar. And of course, Immortan Joe. They just keep getting more and more over the top as the franchise progressed. And what's truly remarkable is the fact that Max is actually the deuteragonist of Mad Max: Fury Road. That's right, he's the second most important character - the protagonist is one Imperator Furiosa, originally played to perfection by Charlize Theron, and soon to be embodied by Anya Taylor-Joy in the upcoming Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. I don't know about you, but I am pretty stoked to see another installment in the franchise - Max or no Max!

This week on the Everything Actioncast, Zach and Chris head into the post-apocalypse (?) of 1979's Max Max to celebrate the 45th anniversary of George Miller's classic. Miller's debut film, Mad Max is set in a dystopian Australia on the brink of societal collapse. Mel Gibson stars as Max Rockatansky, one of the few remaining police officers trying to maintain law and order. A sadistic motorcycle gang led by Toecutter (Hugh Keays-Byrne) becomes a thorn in Max's side when they first target his partner Goose (Steve Bisley) and then Max and his family. The guys talk about how things seem OK for a world on the brink of collapse, how Goose becomes the main character for a large section of the movie, if Max and his wife Jessie (Joanne Samuel) are bad parents, the memorable climax where Max finally gets Mad and more. You can watch Mad Max on Prime Video, Tubi, and PlutoTV. Next week we're talking about the 90s spin on Most Dangerous Game, Surviving the Game for its 30th anniversary. We want to hear your comments and feedback. Welcome to the Living for the Max series.  Over the past 45 years, there has been no other film franchise QUITE as inventive nor as consistently exciting as The Mad Max Saga….As each film has been directed by Australian cinematic genius George Miller, they have each reflected his unique vision while also being HUGELY influential on pop culture, more specifically the action genre.  Therefore over the next several months, I will be revisiting EACH entry of this beloved franchise every month leading up to the U.S. release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga on May 24!  Let's kick things off with the original Australian-produced action thriller which was not only the on-screen debut for Mel Gibson but the first feature film to be directed by George Miller.  And it's a relatively simple story focusing an ongoing war in headed-towards-dystopia-Australia between a brutal motorcycle gangs of marauders and leather-clad highway patrolmen who are still trying to keep the streets safe.  This is where we meet one of those patrolmen....a simple family man Max played by Gibson......BEFORE he gets Mad. :o Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Max's life takes a dark turn when a vicious motorcycle gang led by the sadistic Toecutter (played by Hugh Keays-Byrne) and his lieutenant, Johnny the Boy (played by Tim Burns), terrorizes the region. As the gang becomes more violent, Max's world is shattered when they target his family. Driven to the edge and seeking revenge, Max embarks on a relentless pursuit to bring justice to the gang members responsible for the tragedy. With his iconic black interceptor car, Max engages in intense car chases, brutal confrontations, and explosive action sequences. "Mad Max" delves into the themes of vengeance, survival, and the unraveling of society in the face of chaos. The film showcases George Miller's unique blend of gritty storytelling, visceral visuals, and adrenaline-pumping action, establishing a template for the future installments in the franchise. The movie's success catapulted George Miller's career and led to the creation of several sequels, making "Mad Max" a cult classic and one of the most influential films in the action genre. Bad Dads Film Review

Crazy gonzo revenge exploitation movie MAD MAX was Director George Miller's 1979 debut that spawned a multi-film franchise and propelled Mel Gibson to Hollywood stardom. Inspired by real-life fuel pump shortages and outbreaks of civil disobedience during the global oil crisis in the 70's, Miller conjured up a grim vision of civilisation on the edge of apocalypse, with the fabric of society collapsing and morality correspondingly decaying. A world where murderous gangs of highway roaming bikers led by villains named Toecutter terrorize rural communities, with only the under-funded Main Force Patrol around to uphold the law, and a place where hotshot cop Max Rockatansky (Gibson) will eventually set out to exact a very personal revenge. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to think of Australia as a barren, irradiated wasteland but that's not where Miller's genius and ingenuity ends as he conjures up an inventive world - ripe for expansion as further instalments of the franchise will prove - and spectacular stunts which imbue the film with a constant sense of motion and pushed the envelope of guerrilla action film-making. Though time leaves the original MAD MAX feeling a little crude and raw in comparison to its bigger budget sequels, this is still an exciting and often intense slice of genre film making which makes for continuing compelling viewing. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. If it hasn't been completely destroyed yet you can usually find us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review, on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com or on our website baddadsfilm.com. This week, Jeff Koyen joins me to dissect George Miller's 2015 apocalyptic action Mad Max: Fury Road, the fourth film in the Mad Max film series, following Mad Max, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (often simply called The Road Warrior) and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. Unlike its predecessors, Fury Road was made in a modern, computerized film production landscape. The three original films were scruffy independent productions made in the ‘70s and ‘80s featuring visceral actions with real people doing incredible—and seemingly real—stunts. The decades-later sequel Fury Road miraculously retains the scruffy and kinetic feel and spirit of the original films while taking full advantage of the tools and possibilities of modern movie-making, overlaying a bold sense of color, speed and scale. Fury Road was a singular masterpiece of pure cinema. However, it fizzled at the box office, coming in second to Pitch Perfect 2 on its opening weekend. While Fury Road was embraced by an enthusiastic cult of fans, its impact on filmmaking was sadly negligible. It showed the grand possibilities of CGI filmmaking and the general public said “no thanks” and bought a gazillion tickets for gray Marvel movie sludge instead. Mad Max super-fan Jeff Koyen joins me to celebrate_ Fury Road. Jeff is a brilliant editor and journalist whose career spans the legendary '90s ‘zine _Crank, the iconoclastic alt-weekly_ New York Press _(where he was my boss), the NFT artwork site the Boggz Project (https://boggz.org/)and numerous other publications and projects. It's a great conversation and I don't want to give too much away. But the scene from the original Mad Max with the rumored stunt death is here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBCpa_CiWsI) (don't worry–the guy didn't die; he was just walloped by a motorcycle tire real good). Also, someday I'm going to do a full-throated defense of Beyond Thunderdome but I don't really get into it here.

Mad Max – 1979 “Larger than life and twice as ugly!” Welcome back to Season 3 of Because You Watched (woooosh!) Starcrash! This season, mirroring the collapse of whole damn world, is focused on apocalypse movies! Joining the Distinguished Professors is JC Shirley, our new producer and a podcaster in his own right (The Stuff Podcast with CJ and JC). We're starting off by tackling the blueprint for the modern pre-/ post-apocalyptic movie, 1979's Mad Max! Topics covered include a questionable rendition of the Welcome Back, Kotter theme, the budget of $300,000 (did I mention this was shot for $300,000?), Toecutter's symbolic resurrection as Immortan Joe in Fury Road, the difference between action movies and cult movies/ weird Australian movies, the brilliant low-budget movie Bender (no, not that one, and not that one either - watch it and make Vanderpool famous!), MM as a pre-apocalypse movie, Road Warrior as the template of the post-apocalypse movie, the double revenge plots, the wisdom of going on vacation in the middle of the apocalypse, comparison with Straw Dogs, comparison with Cyborg (stay tuned later in the season!), lines taken from AC/DC's “Live Wire,” parallels with Gibson's character in Lethal Weapon, George Miller as a director, the superiority of Fury Road, society falls apart but the roads are looking pretty good and the cars are still pretty cool, the highway patrol as just another gang, the unbearable loudness of the score, an uncomfortable suggestion of bestiality, the polymorphously perverse gang members as a precursor to the weird homophobia of The New Barbarians/ Warriors of the Wasteland, the breast-pillows, the safety-consciousness of the wild and crazy bikers, cheesy camera overcranking, the legendary awfulness of Michigan roads, over-accessorizing as the key to weird characterization, Gibson's super-tight pants, the foolishness of learning to juggle in order to impress girls (try drawing instead!), criteria for selection of apocalyptic movies for this season, comparison with Wall-E, losing the Mask of Zorro episode, intentional WTF moments, Max's Macgyver-esque turn at the end, Back to the Future 2 as a dystopian movie, Max's transition from a cop to a ganger, gang members as evil and crazy, the gunslinger as protector of civilization but outside of it (Shane), Batman beating the crap out of villains, “WOOOOOO!”, humans as the real monsters, and Australians don't drink Foster's. Movies mentioned as fitting the apocalyptic pattern that we don't actually end up watching: Wall-E, Falling Down, A Bug's Life, The Running Man, Soylent Green, Planet of the Apes, Until the End of the World, Apocalypto, Blade Runner, Judge Dredd, Dredd, Shaun of the Dead, Zombie Strippers, Children of Men, They Live, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, 2012, and Wake in Fright. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/because-you-watched/support

Set in the near future, Mel Gibson stars as the titular Max, one of the best police officers working for the MFP fighting against the increasingly hostile lands, full of marauding car and biker gangs who have no regard for life, or for laws, and especially not for law officers.  One such gang of bikers, led by a psychopath named Toecutter, is on the rampage and is targeting MFP officers who've messed with their way of doing things, putting them all in potential harm's way.  A family man, Max doesn't know if he's really cut out to put his neck on the line in a losing battle against anarchy.  He soon discovers there is not much escape from the criminal element that has permeated everywhere, and it's kill or be killed in the lawless and bloodthirsty territories.  George Miller directs in this wildly successful action vehicle that propelled Mel Gibson, and Australian cinema itself, to even greater success.

Strap yourself in and prepare yourself for a thrilling ride as the boys sit down for the first time after their vacation to discuss MAD MAX! Directed by George Miller and written by George Miller and James McCausland, MAD MAX is set “a few years from now” and shows society as we known it on the down swing. Main Force Police, or MFP, is patrolling the roads from rougians, ragamuffins and crazed motorcycle gangs. Max Rockatansky is the MFP’s top officer. MFP finds themselves going after a violent, sadistic motorcycle gang lead by a charismatic psycho known only as the Toecutter. He leads his group from town to town and leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. They’re put on Max’s radar after his partner Jim Goose is burned alive by one of their underlings but it becomes a tale of revenge after Max’s wife and son are killed. With the law no longer on his side, rage in his heart and a super-charged V8 Interceptor on his side, Max vows to chase down and kill the Toecutter and his gang. MAD MAX, upon release, wasn’t well received at first. A lot of critics didn’t get the film and panned it for it’s violence, incoherentness and the killing of children, but that’s not to say the film did bad. Variety praised George Miller’s directorial debut, it grossed $100 million worldwide, awarded three Australian Film Institute Awards and spawned three sequels (The Road Warrior, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome and Fury Road) Mad Max was the first major leading role for Australian actor Mel Gibson and also stars Joanne Samuel, Hugh Keays-Byrne, Geoff Parry and Steve Bisley.

We bid farewell to the best second-in-command Toecutter could ask for, even as we blur the line of who exactly we’re rooting for to win, and talk about Toecutter running away instead of staying to fight. We didn't want to jump on the bandwagon when this one was released. We knew it would gain massive attention, but we would get lost in a crowd of podcasts from those who know and those who don't have a clue what it is they are watching. Let it be said that Mad Max has never had a straight line of continuity, which made it easy to fall back into it again after all these years. Sure Mel isn't there, but Toecutter is back in the incarnation of Immortal Joe. Like visiting Australia itself, I knew that I would love it. It is exactly what it says on the box. Pure indulgence without pretense and nobody but George Miller can give that to us. This is a masterclass in action films.
