Harvard Kennedy School professors Nancy Gibbs and Tom Patterson say local news is civic infrastructure. And it's crumbling. Like bridges, local news organizations use facts to help people connect with each other over the chasm of partisan political divides. People need reliable information to make important decisions about their lives—Where should I send my child to school? Who should I vote for? Should I buy a bigger house or a new car?—just as much as they need breathable air, clean water, and safe roads. Unfortunately, internet-driven market forces have cut traditional sources of revenue by 80 percent, and vulture capitalists have bought up local newspapers, sold off their physical assets and gutted newsroom staffs. Across America, more than 2,000 local news organizations have shut their doors in just the past two decades. Meanwhile, studies show that when local news declines, voting and other key forms of civic participation decline with it. Gibbs and Patterson join host Ralph Ranalli to talk about how to rebuild the local news ecosystem and with it, the civic health of America's community life.Nancy Gibbs is the director of the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics Public Policy and the Edward R. Murrow Professor of Practice of Press, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School. Until September 2017, she was Editor in Chief of TIME, the first woman to hold the position. During her three decades at TIME, she covered four presidential campaigns and she is the co-author, along with Michael Duffy, of two best-selling presidential histories: The President's Club: Inside the World's Most Exclusive Fraternity (2012), and The Preacher and the Presidents: Billy Graham in the White House (2007). She has interviewed five U.S. presidents and multiple other world leaders, and lectured extensively on the American presidency. She holds a bachelor's degree in history from Yale University and a master's degree in politics and philosophy from Oxford University, where she was a Marshall Scholar. She has twice served as the Ferris Professor at Princeton University, where she taught a seminar on politics and the press.Thomas Patterson is Bradlee Professor of Government and the Press at HKS. He has authored numerous books, including Informing the News: The Need for Knowledge-Based Journalism; How America Lost Its Mind: The Assault on Reason That's Crippling Our Democracy, and Is the Republican Party Destroying Itself?. An earlier book, The Vanishing Voter, examined electoral participation, and his book on the media's political role, Out of Order, received the American Political Science Association's Graber Award as the best book of the decade in political communication. His first book, The Unseeing Eye, was named by the American Association for Public Opinion Research as one of the 50 most influential books on public opinion in the past half century. Epidemiologist Steffanie Strathdee and her husband, psychologist Tom Patterson, were vacationing in Egypt when Tom came down with a stomach bug. What at first seemed like a case of food poisoning quickly turned critical, and by the time Tom had been transferred via emergency medevac to the world-class medical center at UC San Diego, where both he and Steffanie worked, blood work revealed why modern medicine was failing: Tom was fighting one of the most dangerous, antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the world.Steffanie joins Greg this episode to discuss solving her husband's medical crisis, and what she learned from this horrific experience. They also discuss how Covid has ramped these trends up, how critical phages are for our bodies, and the open mindedness of PhDs vs MDs.Steffanie is Associate Dean of Global Health Sciences and Harold Simon Distinguished Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine. She is also an Adjunct Professor at Johns Hopkins and Simon Fraser Universities. Stefanie has co-authored her memoir all about her husbands illness titled, “The Perfect Predator: A Scientist's Race to Save Her Husband from a Deadly Superbug.”Episode Quotes:The need for a phage library[30:40] What we need to do is build a phage library that maps onto a superbug library. And, of course, these are going to be constantly needing to be updated because these are organisms that are co-evolving to attack one another. What's the future looking for the advancement of phage[37:55] I can imagine a situation in the future, though, where, because we have, sequencers that are portable and cheaper than ever before, that you'd be able to sequence a phage and sequence a bacteria and be able to have a database to say, okay, you know, this phage will match that bacterium or to even genetically modify or synthesize a phage. So in a 3D printing model, some of my colleagues in Belgium have, you know, been working on that. So, I think that there's going to be advances that are going to help us make this work. But right now, we need phage libraries. We need more investment in clinical trials.Pushing beyond boundaries leads to discovery[39:49] When your back is up against the wall, whether it's you as an individual, us as a society, or a planet, we can sometimes have creative ideas to come up with solutions that we wouldn't otherwise do. And that's what I'm hoping that we'll do now because both climate change and antimicrobial resistance are colliding.Show Links:Guest Profile:Faculty Profile at UC San DiegoFaculty Profile at John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public HealthProfessional Profile at Canadian Association for Global HealthSteffanie Strathdee on LinkedInSteffanie Strathdee on TwitterSteffanie Strathdee on InstagramSteffanie Strathdee on TEDxNashvilleHer Work:Steffanie Strathdee on Google ScholarThe Perfect Predator Website

A bracing medical thriller about one woman's race to save her husband from a lethal, antibiotic-resistant superbug. Epidemiologist Steffanie Strathdee and her husband, psychologist Tom Patterson, were vacationing in Egypt when Tom came down with a stomach bug. Steffanie dosed Tom with an antibiotic and expected the discomfort to pass. Instead, his condition turned critical. Local doctors at an Egyptian clinic, an emergency medevac team and then a German hospital failed to cure him. By the time Tom reached the world-class medical center at UC San Diego, where both he and Steffanie worked, bloodwork revealed why modern medicine was failing: Tom was fighting one of the most dangerous, antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the world. Frantic, Steffanie combed through research old and new and came across phage theory: the idea that the right virus, aka “the perfect predator,” can kill even the most lethal bacteria. Phage treatment had fallen out of favor almost 100 years ago, after antibiotic use went mainstream. Now, with time running out, Steffanie appealed to phage researchers all over the world for help. . . and together they achieved a major medical breakthrough. The Perfect Predator is a nail-biting account of how Steffanie resurrected a forgotten cure—allying with the FDA, researchers from Texas A&M, and a clandestine Navy biomedical center—to design a treatment and save her husband before it was too late. The Perfect Predator is a story of love and against-all-odds survival, detailing how Steffanie helped uncover the science behind a powerful new weapon in the global superbug crisis.

Dr. Patterson and I revisit some of the major themes we discussed in our last conversation on challenges facing the Republican Party, then broaden the discussion to include challenges faced by the Democrats when it comes to governance, and the broader implications of a non-functioning Congress to the American political system. One of the best, strangest shows of the last few years was Lodge 49, a curious, sleepy, fascinating show that ran for two seasons on AMC until it was canceled in 2019. Created by author Jim Gavin, it followed a down on his luck Californian named Dud (played by Wyatt Russell) who mourns the death of his father and ends up finding a new sense of purpose in the membership of a fraternal organization called the Order of the Lynx. There, he finds all manner of colorful characters, all of whom are trying to find their way in a world of philosophical and financial uncertainty. It's a deeply strange show, that's frankly almost impossible to describe accurately -- think of it as a mix between Cheers and a Thomas Pynchon novel. There's a lightness and a melancholy to it, aided of course by the show's soundtrack, a groovy yet introspective mix of psychedelic and surf rock befitting the show's Long Beach setting. In between tracks curated by music supervisor and longtime music journalist Tom Patterson, the score (including its dreamlike theme) was crafted by LA-based musician Andrew Carroll of The Lonely Wild. He's a folk/country-rock guy in a similar stripe to Patterson's '60s-tinged soundtrack; his cues accompany these tracks wonderfully and lend the show a feeling of unexpected intimacy and grandeur. While it's been almost two years since Lodge 49's cancellation, it still lingers in the blood, and Carroll used that inspiration to craft a new EP out today, called You Are Here. A three-track blend of psychedelic rock and modern influences, it's a curiously fitting match to the times we're living in, from the isolation of "Vitamin C" to the dreamlike instrumentals of "Hackers in Love". To commemorate the EP's release, I sat down with Carroll to talk about the EP, collaborating with saxophone maestro Sam Gendel, and get some insight into his short-lived, but indelible work on Lodge 49. And in the process, I got him to break down one of the tracks he composed for the show, as well as offer us exclusive acoustic versions of the Lodge 49 theme and the song "Here/Now" from You Are Here. You can also purchase the EP from Carroll directly through his Bandcamp page here.

Necessity may be the mother of invention, but it was frustration that spurred Tom Patterson's quest to reinvent men's undergarments. As a former medical device salesman, Tom had a re-occuring undershirt problem and set out to find a solution. Tom found traditional men's undershirts have a generic box cut, aren't tailored to flatter a man's body, are often made of basic cotton which shrinks and becomes yellow under the arms, and are baggy, thus creating EFG “Excess Fabric Gut”. In 2009, Tom launched TOMMY JOHN, an innovative line of men's undershirts dedicated to reinventing the foundations of a man's wardrobe. Made from a unique fabric blend that offers multi-directional stretching, combined with patent pending Tailored Stretch Technology™, Tommy John undershirts combine stretch fabric, longer length, and a tailored cut design, allowing them to comfortably hug the torso, stay tucked in place, and easily move with the body. While on a bucket list trip to Egypt, Steffanie Strathdee's husband Tom Patterson fell ill with what they first assumed to be food poisoning. They soon discovered it was much more serious. Tom was diagnosed with pancreatitis and gallstones. The gallstones had blocked his biliary duct, which had caused an abscess the size of a small football to form in his abdomen. When the fluid inside the abscess was cultured, doctors found the “worst bacteria on the planet,” Acinetobacter baumannii. This bacteria, nicknamed Iraqibacter due to the veterans who have returned from the middle east with the superbug, is an organism that is very prone to acquiring antimicrobial resistance genes from other bacteria. Tom was very ill. With the combination of pancreatitis and the superbug, his chance of survival was no more than 10%. Acinetobacter baumannii was only partially sensitive to three known antibiotics, and those were considered to be last chance therapies. He was treated with those drugs, but his bacteria resisted all of them. Steffanie is an infectious disease epidemiologist, but felt blindsided by Tom's diagnosis. Luckily, she had the right combination of knowledge, access to research, and willing medical and research professionals to try alternative therapies. Her research led her to phage therapy. Bacteriophage therapy (phage therapy, for short), are viruses that have naturally evolved to attack bacteria. The perfect predator, they have been co-evolving with bacteria for 4 billion years. There are more than 10 million trillion trillion phages on earth and they are everywhere: in water, soil, and our bodies. Phage therapy has been a known treatment against bacteria for decades, but has been practiced more in the former Soviet Union since western countries started relying on penicillin and other antibiotics since the 1940's. The challenge is to find the particular phage that is effective against the bacterial infection being treated. You are going to love this story of love, determination, resourcefulness and triumph. Steffanie cured Tom's illness with the help of three universities, the US Navy and researchers from across the world. What she discovered in the process is a super weapon against multidrug antimicrobial resistant diseases, which are expected to kill more than ten million people per year by 2050.   Links and notes: Steffanie Strathdee and Robert Schooley are co-directors of the Center for Innovative Phage Applications and Therapeutics (“IPATH”) at UC San Diego Donate to IPATH here Steffanie Strathdee and Tom Patterson's book about their ordeal is called The Perfect Predator Learn more about The Infection Prevention Strategy at ic.tips If you liked this podcast, please consider subscribing to the series and leaving a positive review

We can't say we weren't warned. More than 75 years ago, bacteriologist Rene Dubos cautioned that misuse of antibiotics could breed drug-resistant bacteria – and he has been proved prescient. In this episode: the rise of superbugs, why we ignored the warnings about them, how some are enlisting an old therapy to fight back, and whether we'll heed history's lessons in the face of a future pandemic. Plus, a weird unforeseen effect of antibiotics being investigated at the Body Farm.  Guests: Fred Turek - Director of the Center for Sleep and Circadian Biology, Department of Neurobology, Northwestern University Jennifer DeBruyn - Microbiologist at the University of Tennessee, who also works at the Anthropology Research Facility, a.k.a. the Body Farm   Steffanie Strathdee - Associate Dean of Global Health Sciences at the University of California, San Diego, and co-author (with Tom Patterson) of  “The Perfect Predator: A Scientist's Race to Save Her Husband from a Deadly Superbug” Tom Patterson - Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego, and co-author (with Steffanie Strathdee) of “The Perfect Predator: A Scientist's Race to Save Her Husband from a Deadly Superbug” Mark Honigsbaum - Medical Historian, journalist, and lecturer at City University, London, and author of “The Pandemic Century: One Hundred Years of Panic, Hysteria, and Hubris” Learn more about your ad choices.
