Sandra and Kasey talked with someone who has gone all in to explore the results of fanfiction and collaboration colliding in an online community. This episode features a lively and in-depth discussion of the fandom ecosystem and collective cognition with anthropologist Nicole. Nicole completed research that studied a FanFic-centric Supernatural Discord server and its members. No, not Idling's. However, Nicole's dissertation highlighted many topics that are often touched upon in this podcast.  Cause really, if there isn't group griping and despair about the writing process, is it even fanfic? This is the second episode of our two part discussion on the Female Gaze. Since we laid some groundwork and gave some context in part one, this time around, we dive right in. In thinking through “the female gaze,” we ask questions of whom we presume is looking and who is being looked at. We also think about how the gaze becomes more complicated in our modern media context, especially when we move beyond binary, heteronormative understandings of gender and sexuality. We definitely recommend checking out "E31 The Female Gaze (Part 1): The Origins of the Gaze" before listening to this one. As two people who study, analyze, and have a literal podcast about media, we stand in solidarity with the WAG and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike–along with their counterparts in other industries/countries, who also deserve fair wages and labor protections– none of the works we discuss here or in other episodes would exist. We're tackling a big topic in our two part discussion on “the female gaze.” What is the female gaze and why does it matter? In this first episode, we establish some context for the term by getting into the history of the “gaze” as a concept, the psychoanalytic origins of the Male Gaze as theorized by Laura Mulvey, and how the oppositional gaze, as coined by bell hooks, makes space for alternative ways of looking and being looked at. You can listen to "E32 The Female Gaze (Part 2): Complication and Expansion" right now! A quick editorial note: We incorrectly mention that polo originated in China. Sources consider what would be modern day Iran as the location of origin for the game. All hail (but thoughtfully)! This week, Emily's fluffy episode praising the OTW took a slight detour as this summer revealed some very ugly spots on the underbelly of the Org we all love, support, and depend on. She and V talk through their feelings about some of the things we've all learned about the OTW that are less than utopian in an episode that is... pretty fucking heavy, actually. But we still DO LOVE AND SUPPORT THE OTW AND AO3, AND SO SHOULD YOU. There are just cracks in the foundation that *must* be patched to protect fan culture and fannish lives.  NOTE: We recorded this episode in July 2023, and some of the issues mentioned may have evolved or been solved since recording. Neither of us are Volunteers with the Org, but we support Volunteers and the aims of the OTW. Please support the OTW with your dollars and use the opportunity that being a donor gives you to VOTE to help create a Board that aligns with fannish ideals and protection for Volunteers.

Apparently, the Colorado killers are big news across the pond too. We'll relate this to Dr. Jones' report on her trip to Atlanta, Georgia. She attended an academic conference and made time for the Walking Dead tour. We'll discuss the racial demographics of the folks on these tours and what they reveal about White culture. Emotions abound as Emily and V take a dark look into the mind of former vampire queen Anne Rice and her irrational, misinformed hatred of fanfiction.... and its very real-world consequences for thousands of her fans. This is why disclaimers exist, people. This is why fanfiction will always walk in the darkness and crumble in direct sunlight (just like a vampire). And this is a dangerous precedent set that affects us all to this day. What was Anne Rice thinking? Seriously, WHAT WAS SHE THINKING?

The internet allows all sorts of people to come together to share their love of musicians, actors, tv shows and movies, and...anything. Everything. There are communities who share a love even specific characters from a book series, and I've even recently come across a diehard community of people who share a specific love of Uncrustables - a frozen peanut butter and jelly sandwich snack.  But what happens when fandoms go too far? What happens when a group of people with a lot of big feelings, access to all sorts of personal information, and the anonymity of a screen name decide to turn on you? That's when fandom gets extreme.  I spoke to illustrator and researcher Sam Aburime about the rise of Extreme Fandoms. Sam kindly provided resources for you to use as a springboard if this topic interests you: Further Published Reading on Anti-Fans: "Jonathan Gray describes anti-fans as those who 'strongly dislike a given text or genre, considering it inane, stupid, morally bankrupt and/or aesthetic drivel' (Gray 2003, 70). He also acknowledges that 'fans can become anti-fans of a sort when an episode or part of a text is perceived as harming a text as a whole' (73). However, as his contribution to this collection discusses, anti-fan practices are varied and take a number of different forms." We're back with another episode all about werewolf romances! If you haven't listened to part 1 (episode 27) then go do so now so that you don't miss out! In this episode we "chat" with author Dennis Danvers, get into the nitty gritty of omegaverse, look at the different tropes that live in the werewolf-verse, and ponder the import of our conscience on romantic fiction.Content Warning: This episode contains more explicit references in regards to fanfiction writing and especially omegaverse. Themes of dark romance, shipping, and erotic fiction are mentioned.Terms:Breton Lay (lais) - a story format that features short narrative poems, related to romances, fabliaux, and folktales. They plausibly or conventionally claim to derive from songs sung by the ancient Bretons or Britons in their own language. “Bisclavret” is Breton (The Bretons are a Celtic ethnic group native to Brittany. They trace much of their heritage to groups of Brittonic speakers who emigrated from southwestern Great Britain, particularly Cornwall and Devon, mostly during the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain.)Omegaverse - an alternate universe (AU) of speculative erotic fiction that started in the Supernatural fandom. Within this universe, characters are categorized as "Alphas," "Betas," and "Omegas;" Alphas are the highest ranking in this fictional universe's lupine hierarchy, and whether male, female, or any other gender, are typically characterized by dominance and aggression. Betas are essentially humans and are subject to the same biological functions like menstruation, but typically are not paired with either Alphas or Omegas. Omegas are the lowest in this fictional hierarchy, and can be impregnated regardless of gender. The genre often crosses over with internet subculture "mpreg," which revolves around male characters getting pregnant. They're typically characterized as submissive to Alphas, and in many stories, have little to no agency in A/O relationships. Fanfiction (ie. fanfic) - Speculative fiction, often published online, and written by fans.Wattpad - a website and app for writers to publish new user-generated stories.[5] It aims to create social communities around stories for both amateur and established writer.A03 (aka Archive of Our Own) - best-known arm of the Organization for Transformative Works, a nonprofit organization created "to serve the interests of fans by providing access to and preserving the history of fanworks and fan culture in its myriad formsFated Mates - Think of it as a cosmically-arranged pairing; they're destined to be togetherTrope - a common literary theme or deviceAlphahole - An alpha male whose bossy and/or stubborn tendencies go too far, causing the reader to imagine kicking him repeatedly instead of being wildly attracted to him.Lumbersexual - a man that has adopted certain style traits that are typical of the traditional lumberjackMetrosexual - a heterosexual male with a strong interest in fashion, appearance and other lifestyle characteristics traditionally associated with womenBooks/authors we mention:Red Wolf by Rachel VincentHouse of Earth and Blood (Crescent City #1) by Sarah J. [// Pregenerate link to episode ahead of time: - clicktotweet.com- sharelinkgenerator.com]: # What's 6 foot tall, has no face, an is RIGHT BEHIND YOU?! We don't know, but we heard a story from a friend of a friend of ours... but that doesn't matter because this week, we're talking about fans of that unique online horror phenomenon, Creepypasta (and hopefully, we don't get too scared)! Next week, we take on a definitely less creepy fandom (with special guests from the [Ontario Ghostbusters](http://ontarioghostbusters.ca)), Ghostbusters fans! Share this week's episode: ## Episode outline ### Fandom Facts **History and Origins:** Creepypasta is a kind of online horror fiction that crosses over many different fandoms, and takes its name from the internet term "copypasta" (where something would be copy-pasted from website to website). Creepypasta comes in many different forms from lost episode myths (for example, the Simpsons "Dead Bart" episode) or urban legends like Slender Man or Polybius. Creepypasta likely dates back to the late 1990s and early 2000s with stories like _Ted the Caver_, and gained more popularity with communities like [creepypasta.com](http://creepypasta.com), the [Creepypasta wiki](http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Creepypasta_Wiki), and reddit's [r/nosleep](https://www.reddit.com/r/nosleep/) ([Fanlore - Creepypasta](https://fanlore.org/wiki/Creepypasta)). [// Links to SCP foundation; supposed to be a real organization talking about events and creatures]: # **Search Data:** Looking at the [Google Trends Data](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=creepypasta,%2Fm%2F0fq0d6m) for Creepypasta and Slenderman gives us an interesting quick history. There was almost no interest at all until June 2012 where interest in both terms started rising quickly (Slenderman in particular spiked to its most interest ever in August 2012; probably corresponding to the release of [Slender: The Eight Pages](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slender:_The_Eight_Pages)). Interest has been a slow decline ever since. Looking at the search data also gives us some idea of some of the most popular creepypastas. For example _Jeff the Killer_, _Pokemon_, _Slenderman_, and _Ben Drowned_ (a legend of Zelda creepypasta). **Size of Fandom:** This week is a really challenging one to estimate. Here is some of the data we have: - _Slender: The Eight Pages_ has almost 15 000 votes on [softonic](https://slender.en.softonic.com/) and over 6 million downloads so far - The Creepypasta wiki has [over 13 000 contributors](http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Special:ListUsers) - `r/nosleep` has over 12 million subscribers Given that, we can probably estimate about **fans in the millions**, but it is tricky to narrow down creepypasta fans from general horror fans. ### The Verdict **T could not nope fast enough. Nuke it from orbit.** **Z is in. Still nopes hard... spine tingles, but loves them.** **G is out. Hell no.** ### This week's spotlight Could not find an active charity related to Creepypasta. That being said... **[Ronald McDonald House](http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Ronald_McDonald_House)** A creepypasta _about_ a charity. An unfortunate result while trying to find a creepypasta related charity. **[Narrators U-nighted Charity Drive](https://www.creepypasta.com/narrators-unighted-charity-drive-streaming-project/)** Doesn't appear to be an active charity any more, but came about as a result of the murder of a young girl by her two friends over a disagreement about Slenderman. **[Race Against Time 3.5: Secret of Mana Edition](http://raceagainsttime.io/stream)** Our (now) semi-annual charity livestream! This time, we'll be attempting to beat _Secret of Mana: Remastered_ in less than 24 hours to raise money for the [Organization for Transformative Works](http://www.transformativeworks.org/) (Fanlore, Archive Of Our Own). This week, we interrupt our global fandom safari for a matter of dire urgency! ~~People are wrong on the internet!~~ There is a crisis that only the Doctor, the Winchester brothers, Holmes and Watson can solve (and possibly the Avengers if they aren't busy?)! That's right, this week, we're getting meta and bending the laws of time and space to talk about fans of SuperWhoLock! Next week, we bend the laws of space and time back into place as we travel to Russia to talk about fans of that magical sport (and its fans): Figure skating! ## Episode outline ### Fandom Facts **Fandom Origins:** SuperWhoLock is, unsurprisingly, the crossover between the fandoms of Supernatural, Doctor Who, and Sherlock (with the Avengers sometimes making an appearance). The first tagged SuperWhoLock post (on Tumblr) appeared in August 2011, and the first SuperWhoLock fanfic was tagged on Archive of our own in August 2012 (though it is possible that stories first appeared as early as January 2012 elsewhere). > In SuperWhoLock's case, this usually involves saving the world from impending apocalypse, something so serious that it only makes sense to enlist as many superheroes as possible to stop it—in this case, the Doctor and his assistants, Sherlock Holmes, John Watson, Sam and Dean Winchester, and the angel Castiel. > > — [The Daily Dot - WTF is SuperWhoLock?](https://www.dailydot.com/upstream/superwholock-fandom-supernatural-sherlock/) **Names:** SuperWhoLockian??? **Most Active:** Based on [Google Trends data](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?q=superwholock) and [Fanlore](https://fanlore.org/wiki/SuperWhoLock), it appears that the fandom was most popular in the summer of 2014 (in particular, mid July 2014 - The month of [DashCon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DashCon)). Interest was maintained from June 2013 to about January 2015 before starting its downward decline again. **Where does fandom live:** Almost entirely on Tumblr **Related fandoms:** Obviously, Sherlock, Doctor Who, and Supernatural are most related to SuperWhoLock fandom. There are some parodies fandoms that exist as well: - Bee Shrek Test in the House - Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons ### This week's spotlight **[Organization for Transformative Works](http://www.transformativeworks.org/how-you-can-help/)** The Organization for Transformative Works (OTW) is a nonprofit organization run by and for fans to provide access to and preserve the history of fanworks and fan cultures. ## Where can you find us online? In the last 18 months, fans have been paid for fanfic, have licensed fanart to networks and shows for use on T-shirts and DVDs, crowdfunded projects, created and played apps for and with actors and films, published books that started out as fanfic, encouraged US courts to clarify what's in the public domain, and advanced creativity and cultural discussions every day. Compared to 2004- or even 2010- connections between fandom and transmedia storytelling have changed vastly, but on ArchiveOfOurOwn, Wattpad, tumblr, and Vine, and at fancons, meetups and online, the "gift culture" and traditions of transformative works endure. Explore the landscape of fandom, transmedia and transformative works with Orlando Jones (Sleepy Hollow), Flourish Klink (chief participation officer at The Alchemists), Professor Henry Jenkins (provost professor of communication, journalism, and cinematic arts, USC) and Aron Levitz (Wattpad) in a discussion moderated by Heidi Tandy (FYeahCopyright.tumblr.com) (and crashed by Misha Collins (Supernatural) Recorded live at San Diego Comic Con on Friday, July 25, 2014 7:30pm - 8:30pm  in Room 26AB

Details are still coming together, but sub
