This week Ivy Slater, host of Her Success Story, chats with her guest, Susan Ann Davis. The two talk about resilience in the face of challenges, the importance of mentorship and community among women in business, and the strategic choices involved in scaling a company globally. In this episode, we discuss: How Susan's career path veered from law school ambitions to falling in love with Washington D.C.'s vibrant environment, leading her to strategic communications instead. Why mentorship is vital, rooted in Susan's experiences and efforts to create supportive networks like the International Women's Forum. Being unafraid to take risks and the power of listening more than talking to drive success. Handling difficult situations and failures. Overcoming challenges as a female business owner Susan Ann Davis-President of SDI is a pioneering woman business owner who opened her agency when relatively few women were experiencing success in the business world, and fewer still owned their own business. Over decades, she has grown SDI into a global public affairs and strategic communications powerhouse, receiving accolades and recognition from industry peers and earning the respect of business and government leaders around the world. Internationally known for her expertise in strategic positioning, reputation management, government relations, and crisis communications, Davis has provided counsel to government and industry leaders on six continents and was a strategic U.S. advisor to the Irish Bishops Conference for the Vatican World Meeting of Families and the papal visit to Ireland. She is a co-founder of IPREX, a global agency network covering 100 markets worldwide. Davis has worked with more than a dozen countries on issues ranging from economic crisis to nation building and trade expansion. And for decades she has been a strategic communications and public affairs consultant on U.S. military and veterans' issues for the defense industry and to multiple Secretaries of Defense, DOD agencies, service branches and support organizations. Over her professional career, Davis has played a key strategic communications and government relations role in high-profile crises ranging from reputation management, product liability litigation to airline crashes, environmental threats, and foreign government economic crises, affording her deep insight into senior management policy, planning, execution, and decision making. And as a leader and business visionary, she is expert at developing engagement, media, and business opportunities for executives throughout the globe. She led the Global Irish Forum recommendation for Ireland to develop as a global hub for smart aging technologies, products, design and services, was a founder of Smart Ageing Living Labs of Ireland, and a former producer of a White House Conference on Aging and Silicon Valley Venture Boomer Summits. A lifelong advocate for social entrepreneurship, democracy building and leadership development for women, she is board chair emeritus of Vital Voices Global Partnership, the preeminent NGO that trains and empowers emerging women leaders in 115 countries. She was a founder and the first international president of the International Women's Forum, the global leadership organization now representing more than 7000 women of achievement. She serves on numerous philanthropy boards including the American Ireland Fund and the Razia's Ray of Hope Foundation, for which she is board chair. The Foundation continues to educate over 700 girls in rural Afghanistan. Davis chaired the landmark U.S. Ireland Business Summit, creating the groundbreaking US-Ireland R&D Partnership, and has been formally recognized for her leadership by the governments of Ireland and Northern Ireland. She's been named among the Top 100 Irish Americans, 75 Most Influential Irish American Women, and Top 100 Outstanding International Irish Business Leaders, and received the Flax Trust Award for Service to Northern Ireland. Along with then Prince Charles and former PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi, Davis received the Global Empowerment Humanitarian Award in the United Kingdom, and she was awarded the Noble Humanitarian Prize in Glasgow, Scotland and the prestigious Order of Merit by the Knights Templar. Among her many professional awards are the Stevie Award for Lifetime Achievement in Business, the Bronze Stevie for Woman of the Year, National Woman Business Owner of the Year, Woman Business Advocate of the United States, and the National Association of Women Business Owners Award for “Outstanding Achievement in National and International Public Affairs.” She was an inaugural honoree for the National Capital Public Relations Society Hall of Fame award and the Biz Bash Special Events Hall of Fame. Washingtonian Magazine called Davis one of “Washington's Most Powerful Women” and the Washington Business Journal has recognized her as one of the Washington D.C. region's most influential businesswomen. A University of Wisconsin–Madison graduate, she has been recognized with the Distinguished Service Award in the Field of Communications and the Distinguished Alumni Award. Welcome to the Fall Funder Series, where Sherry Quam Taylor demystifies common misconceptions about how organizations can secure general operating revenue. First up is Shireen Zaman of the BUILD program at the Ford Foundation. As the Program Director, Shireen works directly with organizations in identifying their greatest fundraising needs and preparing a funding strategy that best supports those efforts. Shireen gets real about what she looks for when choosing organizations to support. It's important to remember that there are real people behind these funding efforts who are eager to connect with motivated, resilient organizations. Sometimes, all it takes is a quick introductory email or message to access a grove of new funding opportunities. What You Will Discover: ✔️ Funders are human. Take the time to organically build a relationship with a funder by utilizing all of their available resources, attending webinars, or simply having a conversation. ✔️ Think about ALL of your overhead. Organizations may include the funding they need in the present, but will that be enough to sustain your mission in a way that attracts larger funders? ✔️ The most impactful relationships take time and consistency to build. Don't be discouraged if your efforts don't immediately produce results. —————————————— Shireen Zaman is a program officer on the BUILD team, working to advance the foundation's efforts to support and develop stronger, sustainable, and more effective social justice organizations and networks across the globe. Shireen has more than two decades of experience in the philanthropic and nonprofit sector, spearheading organizational transformation, resource development, and program management at a variety of organizations. Prior to joining the Ford Foundation, she was the director of the RISE Together Fund, a donor collaborative at the Proteus Fund. At RTF, she worked to identify, invest in and build the capacity of grassroots organizations from Black/African, Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim and South Asian communities in the US. She was a founding member and served on the advisory council of the Emergent Fund, a pooled fund dedicated to supporting US grassroots organizing and power building in communities of color, including Black, Indigenous communities. Prior to her work in philanthropy, Shireen was the executive director of the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding, where she led the strategic expansion of a Michigan-founded think tank into the Washington, DC policy space. She was also the director of the Middle East and North Africa program at Vital Voices Global Partnership where she partnered with women leaders across the region to support their work in the areas of human rights, health and political leadership. Shireen was recognized as a White House Champion of Change for her work as an Asian-American woman leader. She holds a BA in human development from Boston College and an MA from the School of International Service at American University. She studied Arabic at the American University in Cairo and is currently completing a coaching certification program through Coaching for Healing, Justice and Liberation. Allison Shapira, MPA, CSP, is a former opera singer turned entrepreneur, keynote speaker, and international expert in leadership communication. She is the Founder/CEO of Global Public Speaking LLC, a certified woman-owned small business that teaches speaking skills to leaders so that they can build better client relationships, inspire their teams, and confidently lead their organizations into the future. She teaches a graduate-level course at the Harvard Kennedy School and has spent 20 years developing leadership communication programs for Fortune 50 companies, government agencies, and non-profit organizations. She has worked with prime ministers and their cabinets and CEOs and their leadership teams, teaching them authentic leadership as a way to inspire their constituents and teams. She also travels around the world with the nonprofit Vital Voices Global Partnership, teaching leadership communication to help women leaders grow their business, run for office, or launch a nonprofit. Allison is a Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) and a Certified Virtual Presenter. She holds a master's degree in public administration from the Harvard Kennedy School and is an internationally-renowned singer/songwriter who uses music as a way to help others find their voice and their courage to speak. As an avid tech enthusiast, Allison has incorporated artificial intelligence into her keynotes, workshops and coaching to help people improve their speaking skills. More broadly, she is researching the intersection of AI and authenticity and what that means for the future of human connection. Allison is the author of Speak with Impact: How to Command the Room and Influence Others (HarperCollins Leadership), which was a Washington Post best-seller, and the new companion e-guide Speak with Impact VIRTUALLY. She has spoken at the Fortune Most Powerful Women Next Gen Summit, the Most Powerful Women in Banking LEAD Conference, and was a finalist for 2017 Woman Business Owner of the Year by the National Association of Women Business Owners, San Diego Chapter. A lifelong learner and world traveler who has taught public speaking on nearly every continent, Allison can ask for directions in ten languages but can only understand the responses in four. One of the proudest moments of her life was singing the National Anthem for the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. Allison had a number of amazing insights during our conversation. Some of them include: “[There is so much value in public speaking in] not reading every single person's body language” (8:05). “[Our perceptions of] body language expressions can be accurate, but they're not necessarily related to us or what we're saying” (9:05). “What I'm doing is co-creating a reality between me and each member of the audience” (10:30). “I'm always very intentional about the energy I'm creating with myself so that I can perform at my best” (12:20). “'It depends' is one of my favorite answers because very few issues are binary” (15:45). “I'm always someone who's loved to learn new things. I love going from not knowing to knowing” (16:10). “Why you?” (24:35). “You're not the center of attention. Your message is the center of attention” (26:00). “I do [need validation]” (29:05). “I don't just do this work as a job. The work that I do is an extension of who I am and what I believe and how I want to show up in this world” (29:35). “It's hard to balance the strategy of running the company with the creativity of making new content” (31:30). “AI is going to affect every part of our lives in ways we can control and ways we can't control” (34:20). “When you're speaking, you're actually engaging the audience in conversation” (41:10). “[Executive presence is] a way of speaking and acting that makes others take notice and listen” (41:30). “Confidence comes from a belief in our ability to affect a positive outcome” (43:05). “The amount of time you spend preparing for a presentation is based on two key factors: how well you know the material and how important the occasion is” (45:50). “Opera music is so rigid and folk music is so make it up as you go” (52:05). “Public speaking is closer to folk music than to opera” (52:45). “We are sometimes too close to who we are to really tap into what drives us the most” (57:05). “I am a super empowered, growth-oriented citizen of the world” (57:55). “When we tap into our own emotions, we actually tap into the emotions of our audience” (1:01:25). “The more personal I am in my songwriting, the more the audience relates to my journey” (1:02:25). “Clarity is a muscle, and we learn how to build that muscle” (1:05:15). “Your energy affects the energy of all the other people in the room” (1:05:25). Additionally, you can connect with Allison on LinkedIn. I'd also encourage you to purchase Allison's book, Speak with Impact: How to Command the Room and Influence Others, anywhere books are sold. After a twenty-five-year career spent fighting for women’s rights around the globe, author Karen Sherman moved to Rwanda with her three sons to oversee the construction of a first-of-its-kind women’s opportunity center. Sherman made her way to Town Hall to tell the story of valiant women who survived the Rwandan genocide with insight from her book Brick by Brick: Building Hope and Opportunity for Women Survivors Everywhere. In conversation with physician and volunteer Dr. Rosita Van Coevorden, Sherman recounted her year-long journey to better the lives of women survivors, highlighting the grit and determination they poured into building lives and raising families despite the brutal challenges of war, genocide, and inequality. Sherman shared how the strength of these women helped her confront corrupt officials, navigate conflict zones, face trauma in her own past, and renew her commitment to her family. Listen in as Sherman and Van Coevorden delved into the struggles of women everywhere—striving to balance work and family, fighting for real options and choices, trying to make their voices heard. Karen Sherman has spent her life advocating for women in war-torn and transitional countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Congo, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Sudan, Kosovo, and the former Soviet Union. Sherman serves as President of the Akilah Institute, Rwanda’s only women’s college, and was a senior executive at Women for Women International, an organization that helps women survivors of war to rebuild their lives. Dr. Rosita van Coevorden is a retired physician, entrepreneur, and active community volunteer in women’s and children’s causes. She is the Founder and Co-Chair of Vital Voices Northwest Council and serves as a director of Vital Voices Global Partnership, Art of Hope, and Kindering Center. She currently serves as the ED of DSC of Puget Sound, a non-profit providing programs and services to individuals with Down syndrome and their families. Presented by Town Hall Seattle. Susan Davis - Founder and President, Susan Davis InternationalSusan Davis on her recent position as Chair of the Board of Vital Voices Global Partnership~ "We work with emerging women leaders throughout the world. We've trained over 15,000 young women leaders and some not so young in countries that are in conflict and transition. And I loved, loved, loved that work. . ." A Ockershausen: All right, welcome to Our Town. This is Andy Ockershausen, and we're so delighted with ... I know, see, I say it all the time but it's true. A guest is so special to us, and this lady is a trailblazer for women in formerly male-dominated industry of public relations. I grew up in Our Town and over the past almost 3.5 decades, she has grown her agency into a global public affairs and communications power house. She is known internationally for her expertise and strategic positioning, reputation management, government relations, and crisis communications. Not only has she provided counsel to government and industry heads in our country, but advises key figures across the globe. But we really got to know her very well at Fort McNair in those great days, working for the Chili Cook-Off. Susan is President of SDI. That's Susan Davis International. Susan, how did you go from the chili bowl to a global conglomerate? It wasn't easy, I'm sure. Susan Davis: No, well thank you Andy. It's really fun to be here with you and Janice and I consider both of you to be such great friends and forever friends. A Ockershausen: No question about that Susan. Susan Davis: And forever friends. A Ockershausen: We didn't say the fact you're the most gorgeous redhead in the city of Washington. But I'll tell you that all the time. Family Full of Redheads Susan Davis: You could say that ... You could maybe just say that again. It would be all right. A Ockershausen: In terms of the day of redheads. My mother was a redhead. Susan Davis: I know. A Ockershausen: And your mother was a redhead. Susan Davis: Yes, my dad was a redhead. A Ockershausen: Wow. Susan Davis: Yes, and all my brothers and sisters but one are redheads, and most of their children are redheads so. We come from big redhead genes. So the Chili Bowl, okay. I actually started my company before I started the Chili Bowl. A Ockershausen: I know you did. The Chili Bowl at Fort McNair to Benefit Children's Hospital Susan Davis: But somehow I got to be better known for the Chili Bowl, which actually was to raise money for Children's Hospital. And we grew that small little ... A Ockershausen: I remember that Susan. What great days they were. Susan Davis: It was so much fun. It was so much fun, but before that, it was in my backyard. A Ockershausen: That's right. Susan Davis: Then we moved to a couple of restaurants, and then it got to be so big. A Ockershausen: It outgrew you. Susan Davis: That we did the big Cook-Off at Fort McNair and it was the only major non-profit event that they allowed there. It was fabulous. A Ockershausen: And we had liquor. Susan Davis: And yes, it was probably too much of that. A Ockershausen: What were you drinking? A marguerita. Susan Davis: Tequila. A Ockershausen: They had that huge marguerita booze. Susan Davis: Yes, right. A Ockershausen: But Susan they were memories that I think of being with Bob Pincus and Sonny and Margo Jurgensen came, and all the people you had doing the judging. It was so much Our Town. Susan Davis: Right, exactly. It was amazing. It was true community, and it was just absolutely fabulous, from people you ... That everyone knew to people no one knew but we did and raised a lot of money. A Ockershausen: But at the end of the day we knew everybody. Susan Davis: Raised a lot of money for Children's Hospital. It was so great. Yeah. A Ockershausen: It was so great. And Susan, your impact on Our Town goes back to those early days, but are you from Wisconsin?
