POPULARITY
About Leah Martin-BrownEven before picking up her first guitar at age 11, Leah Martin-Brown knew she was destined to become a musician.Born in Brisbane, Queensland and raised in the beautiful beach town Burleigh Heads, Leah would play anywhere there was a stage- oftentimes begging family friends who owned bars and restaurants to let her set up and play a few tunes. By the time she was 16, Leah was writing, recording and performing her original music all over the Gold Coast and surrounding areas- regularly being booked for locally run festivals, youth events and the occasional nightclub with her newly named project 'Lilly Rouge'.Leah finished high school and was accepted into the 'Bachelor of Popular Music' program at Griffith University which she graduated from in 2011. Still knowing that she desperately wanted to continue writing and performing music but not quite sure how to support herself doing so, Leah moved down to Melbourne in Victoria and began working on a Master of Music Education at Melbourne University. While she did not fall in love with teaching, she found new life within the vibrant Melbourne music scene, inspiring her to immediately change her hair colour to her signature red and, also, to defer her Degree and begin fully focusing on her band- 'Lilly Rouge'.September 2012 saw Leah return to her home state of Queensland to begin writing and recording with Brisbane based Producer, Stuart Stuart (The Veronica's, Sheppard). The two co-wrote over 30 tracks, most of which were released on 'Lilly Rouge" records. This set Leah and her band up for two Australian National tours, support slots for 'Everclear', 'Presidents of the United States' and 'The Getaway Plan' and a set at 2013's 'Big Day Out' Festival. This caught the eyes and ears of Los Angeles, CA based A&R Company- A&R Worldwide. They invited Leah to California to work on some new music with Producer, Brian Howes (Airbourne, Skillet, Hinder, Nickelback) and showcase at music industry event 'Musexpo'. It was at this point that Leah disbanded Lilly Rouge and created 'Evol Walks'.Leah spent the next 5 years extensively playing shows in her new home of Los Angeles, CA as well as touring through Australia, West Coast USA and parts of Europe, releasing 2 EPs and several singles with the band.In 2020, Leah relocated to Stockholm, Sweden where, as well as writing and recording new music, she was given the opportunity to work and record an album with legendary Producer & Songwriter Robert ‘Mutt' Lange and acclaimed songwriter & producer Tony Nilsson. In 2024, Leah Martin-Brown spends the bulk of her time in Los Angeles, CA but is consistently travelling the world writing, recording and playing wherever she can.She has shared the stage with Dreamtheatre, Flogging Molly, Nita Strauss, Glen Sobel, Johnny Depp and Joe Perry and many more.

GB2RS News Sunday the 7th of January 2024 The news headlines: RSGB Regional Team vacancies RSGB volunteer interviewed by the BBC RSGB National Radio Centre seeks to expand its team of volunteers The news team and all the staff at RSGB HQ would like to wish our newsreaders, listeners and online readers a very happy New Year. We would like to remind everyone that we always welcome your news, by email, to radcom@rsgb.org.uk and the deadline is 10 am sharp on Thursday mornings. The GB2RS script is usually uploaded to the RSGB website by 4.30 pm each Friday afternoon. Are you interested in supporting your local radio amateurs and promoting amateur radio where you live? The RSGB Regional Team has eight Regional Representative vacancies across the UK where you could make a difference. Last year, Regional Reps got involved in a variety of activities including British Science Week and YOTA Month to help spread the word about amateur radio in their regions. If you have the passion to do this, go to the RSGB website at rsgb.org/election to find out how to apply. The deadline for applications is the 31st of January. It was great to hear RSGB volunteer Peter Marcham, G3YXZ on BBC Radio Oxford on New Year's Day. Peter volunteers at the RSGB National Radio Centre, as well as being a tour guide at Bletchley Park. He spoke to radio presenter Sophie Law about his volunteering after sending the words "Bletchley Park Guide" to a three-word, text-in feature on why listeners were up early on New Year's Day. Search for Sophie Law on BBC Sounds, choose the New Year's Day programme and listen from 2 hours, 11 minutes, and 25 seconds. There is so much happening at the RSGB National Radio Centre that it needs to expand its team of volunteers! If you can volunteer on a Friday or Saturday, you will be particularly welcome. The NRC has a fabulous set-up, and full training on using the GB3RS radio station will be given. You should enjoy meeting people and be able to volunteer for one or two days per month as part of a friendly and dedicated team. NRC volunteers also enjoy numerous benefits associated with volunteering at Bletchley Park. For more information, please email NRC Coordinator Martyn Baker, G0GMB via nrc.support@rsgb.org.uk We have received the sad news that both Mick Senior, G4EFO and Martyn Vincent, G3UKV have become Silent Keys recently. Mick was a former Regional Representative for Region 10, and the keeper of a number of local repeaters. Martyn was the District Representative for Shropshire, North Worcestershire and West Birmingham. Previously, he volunteered for the RSGB as the Regional Representative for Region 5 and as a member of the Nominations Committee. He was also a very well-respected member of the microwave and contesting communities. Our thoughts are with their families at this difficult time. This year marks 150 years since the birth of Guglielmo Marconi in 1874. The Cornish Radio Amateur Club will be organising International Marconi Day this year on the 27th of April. For more information and updates, visit the GB4IMD Facebook page. The RSGB's RadCom team is looking for authors to contribute to the magazine. Previously unpublished features and articles are always welcome for consideration, and authors are paid for any content that is used. To contact the RadCom team please email radcom@rsgb.org.uk And now for details of rallies and events The Lincoln Short Wave Club Winter Radio Rally will take place on Sunday the 28th of January at The Festival Hall, Caistor Road, Market Rasen, LN8 3HT. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Thursday the 4th of January 2024 Welcome to the first HF propagation report of 2024 – it looks like it will be business as usual! A massive X5-class solar flare occurred on the 31st of December. Luckily, this happened at 2155UTC so didn't affect the ionosphere over the UK. But it did launch a large coronal mass ejection, which was forecast to possibly hit the Earth on the 2nd of January. It looks like it largely missed us, although low-energy proton levels streaming past Earth continued to rise and were at the minor S1 radiation storm threshold on Wednesday the 3rd. Had active region 3536 been directly facing Earth when the flare was observed, a stronger proton event and geomagnetic storm would have been very likely. Only minor HF signal degradation through the polar zones should be expected because of the minor S1 storm. So, it looks like we dodged the bullet again, but this is a warning that there could be more to come. Otherwise, the solar flux index declined to the 140s over the Christmas period, although it looks like it may increase over the coming week. NOAA predicts it could be in the range of 150 to 160 next week, with a maximum Kp index of 3 on Monday the 8th, or Tuesday the 9th. However, this could soon change if we have another solar flare and subsequent coronal mass ejection, which could see the Kp index rise two days later. So, make the most of HF when the Kp index is low! Otherwise, the winter period is when the low bands, from 160 to 40m, come into their own. While solar maximum is not the best time for low-band propagation, there will still be plenty of DX to be worked. Generally speaking, winter is a good time for east-west paths on HF too. Taking a closer look at 40 metres, the band should open for DX in an easterly direction during the late afternoon and towards the south at sunset. Paths during the afternoon may also include West Coast USA in mid-winter. Relatively local contacts should be possible during the day, as the critical frequency remains above 7MHz during daylight. And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO A new year brings a change of weather type and, after some residual rainfall events at the tail end of the previous week, we should be seeing a marked improvement in the weather as high-pressure returns fairly generally across the country by this first weekend of January, ending today, the 7th. This will remain near, or very close by, for much of the coming week and into the following weekend. It is good news for Tropo, initially over the North Sea towards southern Scandinavia and the Baltic region, but will probably change to favour the western side of Britain in the second half of the week. This is nice timing to coincide with the 70cm band RSGB contests during the week on Tuesday the 9th and Wednesday the 10th of January. Up until the middle of the month, we should be alert to rare mid-winter sporadic-E propagation. With a very contorted jet stream pattern during the whole period, the chances are better than average. This is another piece of good timing for the 50MHz UK Activity Contest on Thursday the 11th. We were going through the Quadrantids meteor shower as this report was being written, so this may provide a little boost to meteor scatter into some of the coming week. Rain scatter will be a rapidly diminishing option during the period as high pressure builds next week. The solar conditions continue to produce elevated Kp index events. So, again, check for auroral openings although, generally, aurora is usually better towards the Spring. For EME, this week we see a negative Moon declination, falling to a minimum by Wednesday. So, Moon windows will be short and peak Moon elevation will be low. Path losses are also low, but we are still over a week away from perigee, the closest approach of the Moon to the Earth. 144MHz sky noise increases all week culminating in the Sun and Moon being close in the sky on the 11th. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

This week we meet Phil Shin and Mark Murphy, they've an immense story share with you all. A chance meeting with Steven in Boston last April resulted in us learning about the reason they'd completed the Boston Marathon that very same day. Phil is a 2-time liver cancer survivor. Mark is his liver donor, or as Phil prefers to call him his hero. In our most uplifting episode to date we are lead through Phil and Mark's story. From their own running history right through to the here and now. Simply put, this is an unmissable edition that will inspire and warm your heart. Phil has given cancer the boot, running has played a huge part in that. Mark, a much more reluctant long-distance runner, has embraced the role he has played with a humbleness, the selfless act of organ donation almost whimsically passed off. The result is an incredible conversation touching on mortality, the bond of running connections and being inspired by the people you meet along life's unpredictable path. West Coast USA based Phil and Mark quickly get into the spirit of some of our YHRF fav questions. Food, fuel, fav places to run, unique dialect dictionary entries and music choices all covered. We also find out that they show no signs of resting on their running laurels, 2023 has big plans in store for both these super-human beings. Life is being richly grabbed. Sensational. John and Steven have a raft of matters to discuss in their intro chatter, the weeks break since our last episode has seen shed loads happening as listeners and former/future guests take on the start of the year with gusto. We've also not 1 but 2 competitions to announce, you can get yir name in for those over on our socials!

Basking sharks on the West Coast USA?!?! Dr. Alex McInturf returns from season 1 and gives us a MASSIVE update about her career, basking shark populations, and the tea on basking shark conservation. Did you know basking sharks were along the West Coast USA?! Most don't, because these sightings are now extremely rare. This week we breakdown Dr. McInturf's article, "“Spatial Distribution, Temporal Changes, and Knowledge Gaps in Basking Shark (Cetorhinus maximus) Sightings in the California Current Ecosystem” McInturf et al. 2022 Article Summary: Basking sharks are the world's second largest fish, and one of the three filter-feeding shark species. Basking sharks are very slow growing, long-lived animals that have a 20-30 year generation time (meaning, there is 20-30 years between two consecutive generations). This species is found around the world and is capable of large-scale migrations. Basking sharks will aggregate during certain months, known as basking shark “hot spots”. Hotspots were observed Eastern North Pacific coastline and California Current Ecosystem, but are now rarely observed. McInturf et al. (2022) compiled recent and historical datasets to examine temporal patterns of basking shark sightings in the California Current Ecosystem, and determine the spatial, temporal, and environmental drivers that have affected basking shark presence and distribution for the last 50 years. Their research showed that there were nearly 4,000 sharks sighted per year until the 1990s, after which sightings are extremely rare. There was also a 50% decline in basking shark school size. McInturf et al. provide insight to why the basking shark population declined, and offer suggestions for future research and conservation efforts. Not familiar with any of these? It’s OK, that’s not because you’re a cob nobbler (= loser). They were all made up. By Megan Jasper. Now the CEO of Sub Pop records, she recounts her linguistic prank. ‘Idle’, ‘trivial’, ‘scurrilous’: the word ‘gossip’ is often accompanied by uncomplimentary adjectives. But don’t dismiss it; from childbirth to Hollywood to political analysis to whisper networks, gossip may be more useful and serious than you realise. Lainey Lui, founder of laineygossip.com, and Buzzfeed News’ senior culture writer (and doctor of celebrity gossip) Anne Helen Petersen explain why. In Episode 4 of the Wake Up to Freedom Podcast with Daniel Carbonel, his special guest, Erica Duran, shares her incredible life experience. She talks about how she carved a path to success, through a rocky arid place for business opportunities that most critics said it was impossible. She will be sharing her pointers on Freedom Lifestyle entrepreneurship. Also how you can live a successful life by literally dropping all the clutter from your life. Erica will teach you how to start from nothing and build your way to the peak of your career. And all that while enjoying a carefree lifestyle day-in and day-out just like she does. Erica Duran’s Bio You will find Erica Duran as a very familiar name in and around the internet marketing sphere of influence. She is a business coach for modern online entrepreneurs and freedom-based luxury lifestyle designer. She is also a minimalist, meaning she teaches her clients to live the most efficient freedom lifestyle possible by removing the things they think helps them, but really does not. Instead of believing in formulas or blueprints, she works with each client to bring out their unique brand essence, which makes their competition irrelevant and helps them to build a solid online platform. She is a solid believer in coaching and that it can bring out people’s true potential compared to canned presentations on PDFs and DVDs about how to do the freedom business or Freedom Lifestyle. She is in the 1 percentile rank of LinkedIn’s best of the best business personalities. She’s also among the Top 100 SEO Experts on Twitter that you definitely have to follow if you want to succeed in your business. Her ideas and tips are worth pounds of gold! She also helps the clients build the systems and structures so they can often enjoy the freedom of a 3-day work week and create a consistent income of $5,000 - $10,000 a month! Erica’s History of Entrepreneurship and Transition To A Freedom Lifestyle Before she became the most sought-after business coach and minimalist, Erica was at the pinnacle of her career as she was the National Sales Director for the entire West Coast USA. Prior to that she was also a hotel executive for Myriad and Double Tree and had 15 years of solid experience. She was constantly under stress and she wanted to quit her job, then one day she did without even notifying the company. She left in her car and never looked back. After that, she tried to do new things solo. She started from real estate to selling mutual funds, selling life insurance to professional organizing business etc. Later it got to the point of selling other people’s clutter to starting their business from scratch, building their websites, building their brand, building their packages etc. There were times when she found that she was handling other people’s clutter and even finds herself in warehouses, which was not her ideal lifestyle, or something to be taught as a Freedom Lifestyle. Later on, she discovered that she was more effective in coaching people via Skype than doing it in person; and so that’s when she discovered what would be her biggest score in her career – coaching online entrepreneurs on how to become successful and live a freedom lifestyle altogether. What’s Erica Up to Nowadays? She’s been successful with her podcasting and even convinced various resorts to host her shows for free! So that everywhere she goes she doesn’t pay a dime while enjoying week-long stays on 5-star hotel-resorts. She was also earning commissions from all sides while doing podcasts and living the freedom lifestyle. I mean, what more could you ask for? Lately, she took down her podcast and is reinventing herself. This woman has a knack for upgrading herself. And just when you thought you knew her well enough, she surprises you in a very big and shocking way. I mean, who does that? Who can remove herself from the web and start over anew,
