New York City is home to a diverse community of Colombian musicians and groups who create in a wide range of traditional, popular and experimental music styles for diasporic communities and beyond. "Colombia in NYC" takes us from independence day celebrations in a chic Manhattan club with accordion virtuoso Gregorio Uribe, to vallenato parties and street parades in Jackson Heights. We'll hear from hip cumbia groups including Combo Chimbita; traditional Afro-Colombian bullerengue group Bulla en El Barrio; salsero, folklorist and educator Pablo Mayor; innovative dance bands MAKU Soundsystem and Grupo Rebolú, and harp virtuoso Edmar Castaneda. Along the way musicians weave in stories about nationalism, identity, place and diaspora, and discuss the challenges and opportunities New York City offers for Colombian musicians. Humans are constantly getting better at fighting cancer. Our understanding of the suite of diseases is more robust, our technology is more advanced, and our public health systems are more efficient. But cancer epidemiologist Professor Karen Canfell says Australia will still see more and more incidences of cancer over time. But Australia’s also on track to become the first country to eliminate cervical cancer, the fourth-most common cancer in women. Karen says that our fight against cervical cancer can teach us how to beat other diseases, too. Crucially, it can also teach us how to help our closest neighbours: cervical cancer is low on Australia’s list of most deadly cancers, and yet it’s at the top of the list in Papua New Guinea. Karen explains why Australia’s leading the world in this space, and how that gives us a responsibility and opportunity to help improve public health worldwide. +++ The Solutionists is a podcast from the University of Sydney, produced by Deadset Studios. For some 50 years, Leo Sarkisian was a worldwide staple on the overseas radio broadcast of Voice of America. A talented musician, raised in the Armenian community around Boston, Leo began traveling the world with his Nagra tape recorder and microphones for Tempo International, a Hollywood record label. His intrepid work in remote corners of Afghanistan and in newly independent Ghana and Guinea won him the attention of Edward R. Murrow, then at VOA. So began Leo's epic career as a documenter, archivist and popularizer of African music. He once said he had worked in every African country but one. In recognition of his passing in June, 2018, we revisit Leo's rich, fascinating conversation and music-sharing session with our own Georges Collinet. Expect lively exchanges between two radio icons, and some rare audio, including Leo's 1965 recording of Fela Kuti during his jazz years. Produced by Sean Barlow and Banning Eyre APWW #783

After killing his family in the winter of 1971, John List went on the run, initiating a worldwide manhunt that would last nearly twenty years before he was finally apprehended. In that time, the List case would become one of the largest and most notorious investigations since the kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby. References Associated Press. 1972. The Tim Conway Jr Show Hour 4 (8.17) Mark Thompson is officially off the market after a low-key wedding to Courtney, just the two of them after years of “road-testing” the relationship and a pre-wedding trip to England and her ancestral Croatia. He also shared close calls with phones and toilets, while Timmy bought a new phone and discovered the UAG Dryout Pouch that actually pulls moisture out better than the old bag of rice. Newlywed life is already treating Mark well (his favorite perk so far is that the new Mrs. Thompson left for four days to visit her sister), Arsenio Hall’s top solo-home privilege is the open-door poop, and in Big Bear, Jackie’s widower Shadow may already be moving on with a young eagle named KD1 as a memorial for Jackie is still being planned. The hour wrapped with a lucky Burbank listener winning Chargers vs. 49ers tickets plus a $100 Graze Craze gift card, plus the wild coincidence that Mark’s wedding landed on the exact one-year anniversary of Foosh’s near-death car crash. In early December 1971, after a month of watching the lightbulbs in the List house slowly burn out one after another, neighbors finally became concerned about the List family and called the Westfield, NJ police to report their suspicions. Acting on the calls, officers arrived at house on the morning of December 7 to perform a wellbeing check, and when no one answered the door, they managed to gain access to the house through a basement window. When they reached the first floor, the officers found the bodies of the List family—including the couple's three children—dead from gunshot wounds to the head they'd suffered a month earlier. Noticeably absent from the remains in the house were those of the family patriarch, John List. In his office, investigators discovered a letter List had written to the pastor of his local church, in which he claimed to have murdered his family in order to spare them the pain of living in a world he believed had become corrupt and morally bankrupt. Leadersh!t: A Look at the Broken Leadership System in Corporate America That Accepts Leaders Who are Really Good at Being Bad by Rande Somma https://www.amazon.com/LEADERSH-Broken-Leadership-Corporate-America/dp/1634919343 With humble beginnings in a small, low-income home in Pittsburgh to over 40 years of business experience including serving as a Chairman, Vice-Chairman and member of several corporate boards of directors, being a corporate officer and running a $20 billion global operation for Johnson Controls, Inc., Automotive Operations, Worldwide, Rande Somma has seen some things in the context of leadership that deeply disturbed him. Somma brings an empathetic top-down perspective to the problem of corporate leadership and the chasm of disconnect that often exists between the workers, management, and the C-suite executives. His book looks at lowered standards for leaders, higher compensation, and the path of convenience, fraud, greed, and corruption that leaders are more often choosing over obligation to their duties. Recently, American businesses have been looking for and hiring leaders who are willing to do anything to elevate our companies to be “successful”, to be the “best”. The author contends that what is considered to be “successful” and the “best” has changed over the past several years or decades to refer almost exclusively to financial gain. While leaders we hire are supposed to be individuals talented in the art of leading people, they are now those guys and gals who are more talented at being financial wizards and creating the illusion that the business is fundamentally sound. This book is about what we have surrendered in the process of our hyper focus on financial gains, and that includes the exceptional return on investment of integrity. The author presents a narrative about what he perceives as a serious and disturbing truth that is incrementally infecting companies both large and small. This truth that was once unacceptable has now become not just acceptable but expected and normal with regard to leadership in corporate America. Somma demonstrates through his personal stories and others’ experiences how corporate American leadership has descended into leadershit. While many of his stories are based on his own experience in the auto industry, Somma sees the problem as a more pervasive issue. It was not just the auto industry having a bad year or two; the pattern was repeated in other companies and industries and in other leadership situations. He recognized this as a leadership system that doesn’t serve us anymore, and therefore, it is the system that is the problem. Somma shows how we – all of us – are paying for leadershit’s lack of commitment to absolute integrity, authenticity, and real performance. While this book walks through Somma’s own tangles with the facets of leadership over the course of his professional career with many organizations, he encourages the reader to recognize the challenges that we all face and for all of us to emerge with solutions and as authentic leaders.

Kris Zellner is joined by Rob Naylor and Our Good Buddy Charles as we discuss the month of July 1991 in World Championship Wrestling and pop culture in general. Topics of discussion include:The entire show is bookended by Ric Flair being fired at the beginning of the month and then WCW basically offering him the booking position at the end of the month.Ric Flair refusing to drop the title not just to Lex Luger but Barry Windham as well, as they were trying to get Flair to do business before he left.Flair's departure totally screwing up the production going into the Great American Bash PPV.The way Flair's departure was treated on TV as a complete shoot which was so foreign to how wrestling was presented on TV in that era.The total confusion of what Barry Windham was supposed to be.Axl Rose starting a riot at a Guns 'n' Roses concert in St. Louis.Fans at house shows being very upset over no-shows, especially Ric Flair. The awesomeness of The Geto Boys. The end of the Desperados after all that damn TV time.“Boyz n the Hood” and “Point Break” being released on the same weekend and the impact “Boyz” had on the west coast's rise in pop culture.A full rundown of the Great American Bash PPV, including why it wasn't as bad as people want to think it was.The supposedly buried Brian Pillman being all over TV and in main events all the time while the supposedly overpushed Dustin Rhodes isn't in those spots. The first-ever Lollapalooza tour.Mike Tyson and Jeffrey Dahmer getting arrested on the SAME DAMN DAY.The end of WCW Pro Wrestling New York, as WCW they switches affiliates in NYC from WPIX to WCBS and Pro NY is replaced by Worldwide.MTV and who they pushed to the moon that didn't reach the expected level of success. This is just a taste of what we talk about on the show as we have a complete and total blast here!!!To support the show and get access to exclusive rewards like special members-only monthly themed shows, go to our Patreon page at Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets and become an ongoing Patron.
