If you're looking to feel more thankful or deepen your gratitude practice, this is the episode for you. Did you know it's scientifically proven that expressing gratitude, especially through writing, actually rewires our brain to feel more happiness? This is not anything new to Nancy Davis Kho, host of Midlife Mixtape podcast and author of The Thank You Project: Cultivating Happiness One Letter of Gratitude at a Time. As she approached a milestone birthday, she decided to send thank-you letters to the many people who had influenced her, helped her, and inspired her over the years: family, friends, mentors, teachers, co-workers, even a couple of former friends and exes. Emerging research proves that actively appreciating the formative people in your life, past and present, can lead to a lasting increase in your happiness levels. The Thank-you Project offers a charming, entertaining roadmap to see, say and savor your way there. About Nancy: Nancy Davis Kho is a freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle, US Magazine, The Rumpus, and The Toast. She's been recognized as a Voice of the Year in the Humor Category by BlogHer and was the inaugural champion of Oakland's Literary Death Match. Mike Murray, Director of Community Outreach for Pet Food Express and the person in charge of the Bay Area Pet Fair, is our talented guest today. The Bay Area Pet Fair is the largest animal rescue event of its kind on the West Coast of the United States, and very likely the whole country (and possibly the entire solar system?). We discuss last year’s extremely successful event and what to look forward to this year. Saturday and Sunday, September 15 and 16, 2018. Alameda County Fairgrounds, Pleasanton, California. 10:00am to 5:00pm. Free admission and parking. Last year, there were over 140,000 animal lovers in two days looking for a wonderful new companion. Around 1,500 adoptions! Great live music, delicious food, Splash Dogs, Police K-9 demos, even Jackson Galaxy from My Cat From Hell! Dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, rodents, and you may even spot a miniature horse rescue. After adopting an Irish sight hound, her dog Lily, Laura Schenone discovers a remarkable and little-known fight to gain justice for dogs and for all animals. Greyhounds, bred to be the fastest dogs on earth, are beautiful, gentle, and astonishing creatures. Yet for decades, countless numbers of them have been abandoned and destroyed every year once they can no longer compete and win. The Dogs of Avalon introduces us to the strong-willed Marion Fitzgibbon, born in rural Ireland, where animals are valued for their utility. But Fitzgibbon believes suffering is felt by all creatures and champions the cause of strays, baffling those around her—including her family—as she, and a group of local women rescue any animal in need, taking on increasingly risky missions. Author and former U.S. Marine Craig Grossi shares the story behind his book “Craig & Fred: A Marine, A Stray Dog, And How They Rescued Each Other.” Goes on sale Tuesday, October 31, 2017! In 2010, Sergeant Craig Grossi was doing intelligence work for Marine RECON—the most elite fighters in the Corps—in a remote part of Afghanistan. While on patrol, he spotted a young dog "with a big goofy head and little legs" who didn’t seem vicious or run in a pack like most strays they’d encountered. After eating a piece of beef jerky Craig offered—against military regulations—the dog began to follow him. "Looks like you made a friend," another Marine yelled. Grossi heard, "Looks like a 'Fred.'" The name stuck, and a beautiful, life-changing friendship was forged. Fred not only stole Craig’s heart; he won over the RECON fighters, who helped Craig smuggle the dog into heavily fortified Camp Leatherneck in a duffel bag—risking jail and Fred’s life. With the help of a crew of DHL workers, a sympathetic vet, and a military dog handler, Fred eventually made it to Craig’s family in Virginia. Website http://www.fredtheafghan.com Facebook https://www.facebook.com/FredTheAfghan Craig Grossi mentions two organizations that aim to reunite veterans with animals they meet abroad. Sherri Franklin, Founder and CEO of Muttville Senior Dog Rescue in San Francisco, shares her journey in animal rescue at the Rescue Think Tank as she celebrates Muttville’s Tenth Anniversary. Sherri Franklin, a long-time animal advocate and shelter volunteer, founded Muttville in 2007 to save the lives of the older dogs that were considered “unadoptable” and routinely euthanized in area shelters. Working from her house, she saved 27 dogs that first year. She said she “wanted to make senior dogs sexy,” and in fact, has turned the organization into a Bay Area favorite and a national model. In 2010, Sherri received the Jefferson Award for Public Service, which recognizes those who “inspire others to service.” In 2016, CNN named Sherri a CNN Hero. René Kaiser-Riley of Summer Mae Photography is a photographer of nature and animals, a volunteer with the Idaho Humane Society, and Dog Is My CoPilot’s Boise Ambassador. On the Summer Mae Photography Facebook page, you will find numerous albums of rescued dogs and cats flown to Idaho. There is also an album of foster animals looking for their furever home. Dog Is My CoPilot, Inc. (DIMC) has saved thousands of animals’ lives. DIMC was created in 2012 by a doctor in Wyoming and a lawyer in Arizona. Peter Rork, MD and Judy Zimet, Esq. work with a supportive Board to fly animals from areas of the United States where they are not wanted, to areas of the United States where they are in demand. There is no charge to the animal welfare organizations for whom DIMC flies. The planes fly on public donations alone. The organization is a 501(c)3 approved organization based in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The Idaho Humane Society is the largest and oldest animal welfare organization and veterinary charity in the state. They are a private 501(c)3 organization that relies on donations to provide programs and services that benefit animals in Idaho. The mission of the Idaho Humane Society is to advocate for the welfare and responsible care of animals, protect them from neglect and cruelty, and promote humane education, awareness and compassion. Karen Schaver and Paul Griffin are our amazing guests today. Karen Schaver runs Orphan Dog Rescue in beautiful Lake County, California. She talks with us about her goal to bring as many dogs to the Bay Area Pet Fair this weekend, with the hope of clearing out the shelters. Paul Griffin is an accomplished author, with his newest children’s book, Saving Marty, launching on Tuesday, September 19. He is also a first-time father, with his adopted and musically talented teenage daughter, Ani. He shares about the book and his incredible journey with Ani. Website http://lauraschenone.com Facebook https://www.facebook.com/LauraSchenoneAuthor/ Laura’s Books http://lauraschenone.com/books Notes Owen Patrick Smith (1869-1927) is the American who invented the mechanical rabbit, which sparked the beginnings of greyhound racing. Beverly Wolf is the woman who worked very closely with Marion for two decades. Beverly and her husband housed many of the animals that they saved. Joanne Greene is our amazing guest. She watched news of the human and animal suffering that Hurricane Katrina caused in 2005, and instead of staying put, she decided to do something about it. Forces of Nature is a book based on her experiences as well as those of Penny Koncz. Forces of Nature, written by Graham Spence https://www.amazon.com/Forces-Nature-incredible-courageous-devastation/dp/1535578173/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8 Graham Spence can be found at http://www.grahamspence.com Forces of Nature by author Graham Spence is the remarkable story of the courage and commitment of two ordinary women who put their lives, jobs and families on hold to rescue hundreds of thousands of pets fighting for their lives when Hurricane Katrina destroyed New Orleans. Joanne Greene, a former Playboy Bunny, and Penny Koncz, an award winning Michigan body builder, watched with horror as almost the entire pet population of one of American’s most iconic cities was abandoned and some even shot in the aftermath of the third most powerful Atlantic storm in history. While humans were ordered to evacuate New Orleans in 2005, no provision was made for the estimated 300,000 pets. Many were left in homes with a bowl of food and water, as their owners expected to return soon. No one was prepared for the apocalypse looming on the horizon. Jesse Freidin is a leading fine art dog photographer with work in more than 100 private collections throughout the United States. His portraiture studies the deeply healing power of the human/animal bond – telling a contemporary story of companionship and love that honors the role does play in our modern lives. About Finding Shelter Finding Shelter is a story about the beautiful relationship animal shelter volunteers share with their canine dependents, and the powerful caretaking that happens between the two species. More importantly, it is an opportunity to rebrand our nation’s animal shelters and unveil the truth: that shelters are a place of love, warmth and healing. Rose and Jimmy Hunter are the heroes behind House of Ig. They share their lives with eleven iguanas, along with some turtles. You will also see a dog and cat in the photos. Jimmy and Rose first rescued Tulsa from near-death when Jimmy moved to Illinois from Oklahoma. After Tulsa passed away, over the years, it has grown little by little. They talk about good iguana care (husbandry), including doctor’s visits, a rich and diverse diet, and the importance of lighting. They picked up knowledge along the way, and Jimmy and Rose were kind enough to share a variety of resources for the reptile lover! Nancy and Harold discuss three animal rescue events that made last weekend great. And exhausting. But mostly great! On Friday, Nancy helped with a Wings of Rescue flight, the third one of 2017 Nancy worked on. She worked hard to coordinate the flight of sixteen dogs from Northern California to a variety of no-kill shelters in Spokane, Washington. Nancy shares some of her thoughts from that day. On Saturday, Nancy and Harold attended the Business of Saving Lives conference which brings together many animal rescue people from the San Francisco Bay Area. It was the thirteenth annual event at Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation. Some great speakers, including Dr. Regan McGowan; Erin Kerley and Audra Farrell; Renee Harris; and especially, Dr. Kate Hurley. On Sunday, it was St. Pitty’s Day at Contra Costa Animal Services, an event that attracts potential adopters to meet a wide variety of dogs from Contra Costa Animal Services and other rescue organizations. Nancy and Harold discuss the adoption of Sedona, a beautiful pitbull mix. Sandra Cordero rescues about eighty animals on her property in Roberts Creek, British Columbia off the Sunshine Coast. This includes over fifty battery hens, as well as ducks, goats, pigs, and Nina the Turkey! Batteries are the cages where hens are kept to create an cost-effective egg-laying process, while also causing suffering and distress for the hens by constricting movement, among other harmful conditions. Sandra shares her life journey, her day-to-day life, and why she started her own animal sanctuary. If you would like to stay at Sandra’s Airbnb, look for “Goats on the Rock.” https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/12681332 Airbnb is an online room and home-sharing app that is a great alternative to staying at traditional hotels.
