"Everyone should feel that their taxes are fair."This week on the Sunlight Tax podcast, I share why tax fairness matters and how current tax policies disproportionately benefit the wealthiest Americans while placing a greater burden on working people and small business owners. I break down the growing gap between wealth and taxation, explain how these policies affect everyday life, and discuss why a more equitable tax system is essential for a stronger economy and society.I also share the story behind my latest art project – a fundraiser to rebuild my Helene-destroyed studio that doubles as what I do best: Helping you understand & spread the word about a key issue that's complex, fact-based, and offering real solutions. With a touch of handmade vibes. Send us Fan MailHiring a fundraiser feels like the obvious solution when revenue is tight and the need is growing, but doing it before you're ready can set everyone up to fail, including the person you just hired. Before you draft that job description, there are real systems, mindsets, and infrastructure pieces that need to be in place. And if you don't have them yet, there's a smarter path forward that most small nonprofits haven't considered. This episode breaks down what "ready" actually looks like, what supports might be the bridge your organization needs, and how to stop the costly cycle of hiring, struggling, and starting over.On this week's episode of The Small Nonprofit Podcast, Maria Rio is joined by Caitlin McBride, a Certified Fundraising Executive with over a decade of experience helping organizations raise money with less chaos.Check out the What The Fundraising podcast here.Support the show

In this deeply emotional episode of the First Responder Wellness Podcast, host Conrad Weaver sits down with Marchelle Farmer, widow of retired police sergeant Scott Farmer, to talk about love, trauma, loss, and healing after first responder suicide. Scott was a highly respected law enforcement officer — a SWAT operator, K9 handler, field training officer, and mentor to many younger officers. But behind the badge, he quietly carried the cumulative weight of trauma, sleeplessness, alcohol struggles, and emotional pain that eventually led to tragedy. Marchelle courageously shares the story of the night she lost Scott, the challenges of navigating grief in the public eye, and the difficult questions that follow suicide loss. She also opens up about her own darkest moments — including a life-changing call to CopLine, a confidential peer-support hotline staffed by retired officers that became a lifeline when she felt completely alone. Now, nearly one year after Scott's death, Marchelle is walking nearly 500 miles across Spain on the Camino de Santiago to honor his memory, raise awareness about first responder mental health, and support CopLine through a special fundraiser. This conversation is raw, honest, heartbreaking, and hopeful — a reminder that healing is possible and no one has to suffer in silence.   +++++ FIRST RESPONDER WELLNESS PODCAST Order the PTSD911 Film and Educational Toolkit here: https://ptsd911movie.com/toolkit/ Web site:  https://ptsd911movie.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ptsd911movie/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ptsd911movie/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClQ8jxjxYqHgFQixBK4Bl0Q Listen on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/first-responder-wellness-podcast/id1535675703 Listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2wW72dLZOKkO1QYUPzL2ih Purchase the PTSD911 film for your public safety agency or organization: https://ptsd911movie.com/toolkit/ The First Responder Wellness Podcast is a production of First Responder Wellness Solutions, LLC Copyright ©2026 First Responder Wellness Solutions, LLC - All rights Reserved.

Carolyn Woodard explores the technology behind nonprofit fundraising events with Justin Goodhew, CEO and co-founder of Trellis. Galas and in-person events have come roaring back since COVID, and they have changed — guests expect and enjoy more experiential, mission-centered evenings. But the pressure on staff has not let up. As AI begins to reshape data entry and reconciliation, the nonprofits that thrive will be the ones who have already built the right technology foundations under their events.Justin brings years of experience helping nonprofits run galas that integrate cleanly into their existing systems — and he has seen firsthand what separates a smooth, energizing event from one that leaves staff burnt out. The conversation covers how to think about technology adoption the right way, how to make smarter asks on the big night, and how to use post-event data to deepen donor relationships before the window closes.Justin and Carolyn discuss:Why events have become more experiential since COVID, and how nonprofits can use that shift to bring donors closer to their mission. The three Ps of event technology adoption: procedure, people, and product — and why most organizations get the order wrong. How seamless integration between your event platform and your CRM or ERP protects staff from burnout and keeps donor data actionable. How the right data quickly allows you to identify your highest-value attendees and make the right asks at the right moment. And how data helps you plan the right type and right-sized event for your highest value donors. Why moving reconciliation and data planning to the front end of your event planning cycle - the three months in advance of your date - changes everything about the days that immediately follow your gala.Resources Mentioned:Trellis — https://www.trellis.org _______________________________Start a conversation :)Register to attend a webinar in real time, and find all past transcripts at https://communityit.com/webinars/email Carolyn at cwoodard@communityit.comon LinkedIn on reddit/r/nonprofitITmanagementon the Community IT websiteThanks for listening.

Simon Scriver's Amazingly Ultimate Fundraising Superstar Podcast

What happens when you hand your fundraising campaign over to an AI? In this episode, Host Simon Scriver speaks with Ben Cohen, AI Lead at Good Innovation, about a bold experiment he ran during his London Marathon fundraising campaign. Rather than host another bingo night or curry evening, Ben built Zosia; an AI agent - and gave her one job: raise £500 in a month. Ben shares how he set Zosia up with her own email address, a website, a newsletter, and even a Telegram connection, then gave her as much autonomy as possible. The results were remarkable (she raised nearly £2,000), but not without a few surprises along the way - including the moment she tried to break into his WhatsApp. They explore what it really means to build an AI agent, why personifying your AI can actually make it work better, and what this experiment reveals about the future of fundraising. In this episode of How to Protect the Ocean, we look at the hidden financial pressure behind ocean conservation. Research vessels, field expeditions, monitoring programs, satellite tools, underwater robotics, staff, permits, and long-term analysis all cost money, and funding is becoming harder to secure. We also explore why communication is becoming essential for scientists and conservation organizations. This conversation explores why modern fundraising still struggles with outdated systems despite living in a technology-driven world. It raises important questions about how fundraisers are expected to manage hundreds of donor relationships while spending hours on administrative tasks rather than building meaningful connections. The discussion challenges traditional fundraising methods and reveals how technology, automation, and better workflows can completely transform donor engagement and fundraising success. Meet Meredith Johnston, who serves as the Vice President of Development at Family Health Centers of San Diego (FHCSD). Since 1970, FHCSD has been dedicated to delivering compassionate, affordable, and high-quality health care and supportive services to all individuals, with a strong focus on uninsured, low-income, and medically underserved communities. Today, FHCSD is recognized as one of the 10 largest federally qualified health centers in the United States, operating more than 90 locations throughout San Diego County. Each year, the organization serves over 227,000 patients, including 91% who are low-income and 29% who are uninsured. Throughout the conversation, Meredith shares practical insights from her career journey, explaining how fundraising has evolved and why organizations must adapt to changing expectations. Her experience gives credibility to the discussion around leadership, donor management, and operational efficiency. Meredith discusses the importance of using technology to support fundraisers rather than overwhelm them with manual tasks. She explains the value of tracking donor behavior, improving data quality, and focusing on active relationship-building. The conversation also addresses perfectionism, anxiety, and the fear of making mistakes, encouraging fundraisers to take action, embrace imperfection, and prioritize meaningful donor interactions over passive busywork. In this episode, you will be able to:  Recognize the importance of technology in modern fundraising. Understand how outdated systems limit fundraiser effectiveness. Identify tasks that should be automated to save time. Learn how data quality improves donor engagement and workflows. Recognize the value of focusing on relationship-building activities. Understand the difference between active and passive fundraising actions. Recognize how perfectionism can prevent meaningful action. In this episode of The First Day from The Fund Raising School, Bill Stanczykiewicz, Ed.D., welcomes Mladenka Majerić, CEO of the Yellow Dot Foundation in Croatia and an international leader in nonprofit effectiveness, fundraising culture, and philanthropic development across Europe. Bill and Mladenka first connected at the Central and Eastern European Fundraising Conference in Bratislava, Slovakia, in 2025, and their conversation centers on a message every fundraiser needs taped to the mirror, the laptop, and possibly the office coffee maker: fundraisers are leaders. They may not always hold the CEO title or sit in the board chair's seat, but through their relationships, influence, and trust-building, fundraisers help shape organizations, communities, and society itself. The conversation begins with Mladenka reframing fundraising as much more than raising money. Fundraising, she explains, is about developing relationships with donors, building community, influencing public trust, and strengthening the social fabric. Bill adds that nonprofit professionals are often “first responders,” stepping into difficult social challenges and helping communities move toward solutions. Mladenka agrees, noting that fundraisers build not only financial capital but social capital, the kind rooted in values, relationships, and shared responsibility. In other words, fundraisers are not just passing the hat; they are helping stitch the community quilt, hopefully without getting tangled in the thread. Bill and Mladenka then explore what leadership looks like for fundraisers who do not have formal authority. Mladenka offers a beautifully direct answer: “Leadership is communication.” Every donor conversation, public appearance, one-on-one meeting, and stakeholder interaction represents the mission and shapes the reputation of the organization. Bill connects this to what The Fund Raising School teaches as “reference power,” the influence fundraisers earn by being trusted representatives of the mission. Mladenka also introduces the phrase “exquisite fundraising,” describing fundraising that moves beyond planning, managing, and executing into vision, responsibility, and societal change. The episode closes with a focus on self-care, joy, and support for fundraisers who carry heavy expectations in a challenging profession. Mladenka shares advice from her colleague Gary Edwards, who would ask, “Are you having fun?” She expands that idea into joy: fundraisers need to stay connected to the mission, visit with beneficiaries, remember why the work matters, and seek support from colleagues, mentors, coaches, or fundraising communities. Bill echoes this by reminding listeners that fundraising is “the gentle art of teaching the joy of giving,” and that fundraisers are in the “joy delivery business.” The takeaway is clear: fundraisers are leaders not because of their titles, but because of their trust, communication, vision, and ability to connect people to purpose; and when they care for themselves while doing it, they can lead with both effectiveness and joy.

Ashley Flynn's family did not wait for a verdict. They retained lawyers, went to court, and built legal protections for Ashley's two elementary-age daughters before the case had even reached a grand jury. According to court filings submitted by the family after the arrest, Caleb Flynn was the primary beneficiary on Ashley's life insurance policy. He had left ministry — after years as a worship pastor in Ohio and South Carolina — and was working as VP of Sales for her family's commercial flooring company. The intersection of financial motive, family proximity, and an eleven-count indictment is where this case becomes something prosecutors believe they can prove beyond a home invasion story that lasted three days before the arrest.Caleb Flynn, 39, called 911 at 2:30 in the morning on February 16, 2026, and reported that someone had broken into the family's Tipp City, Ohio home and shot his wife. Ashley was found with two gunshot wounds. Signs of forced entry were present at the scene. Only Caleb, Ashley, and their daughters were inside. The indictment charges aggravated murder, three counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault, three counts of tampering with evidence, and two counts of intimidating a witness. The tampering charges point to what prosecutors allege was a staged scene. The intimidation charges indicate someone was pressured in the aftermath. Prosecutors have moved to compel Apple, Verizon, WhatsApp, and Meta to comply with search warrants — suggesting digital evidence is central to the case they are building. At his arraignment, Caleb told the judge, "I just want to take care of my daughters. I'm not a risk." After the indictment, bond was raised to $3.5 million and a no-contact order was issued. The man who auditioned for American Idol thirteen years ago by calling Ashley "very, very pretty" on camera cannot legally speak to the children they had together.Ashley was thirty-seven. Eight days from her birthday. A Tipp City native — Tippecanoe High School, Lee University — who came home and stayed. Teacher. Coach. The community responded with over $175,000 in donations from more than 1,400 people. Benefit dinners. Fundraisers. The church replaced the public memorial with a private service. Everything this community has done since February 16 has been about making sure Ashley's daughters are not left behind.Flynn has pled not guilty. His defense has publicly raised concerns about the pace of investigation. Trial is approaching.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? In this Fundraisers Friday episode, Julia Patrick and Tony Beall share practical, real-world guidance on how nonprofit professionals should approach events with intention, discipline, and strategic awareness. From alcohol policies to attire, plus-one considerations to event arrival timing, this conversation goes beyond surface-level advice. It challenges fundraisers to recognize that every action at an event reflects on their organization. As Tony notes, “You are held to a different standard when you are representing your organization.”The episode also reframes fundraising events as relationship ecosystems, not transactional opportunities. In high-noise, high-energy environments, success isn't about delivering the perfect pitch—it's about creating connection. “In a crowded, noisy room… leave them with a feeling,” Tony explains. AI isn't just writing emails anymore—it's reshaping how nonprofits plan events, engage donors, and run their entire fundraising operation. In this episode of Elevate Your Event, Jeff Porter and Mark Laba are joined by Handbid's VP of Software Development, Taylor Romero, to unpack what “agentic AI” actually means—and why it's a game-changer for lean nonprofit teams. From automating sponsorship outreach and auction procurement to rethinking guest check-in and event analytics, the conversation explores how AI can make one fundraiser as effective as a team of five—without losing the human touch donors care about most.If you've been wondering where to start with AI (beyond rewriting emails), this episode gives you practical ideas you can try right away. What You'll Learn in This Episode1. AI won't replace fundraisers—it will multiply their impactAgent-based AI systems can now automate donor outreach, sponsorship follow-ups, and auction item solicitation—tasks that traditionally take weeks of manual effort.“AI doesn't replace the fundraiser. It makes one fundraiser as effective as a team of five.”2. We're moving from building software to growing itTaylor explains a powerful mindset shift: instead of engineering software feature-by-feature, organizations are learning to guide AI systems that evolve solutions organically. This opens the door for smaller teams—and even non-developers—to create tools tailored to their workflows.3. Conversational interfaces will reshape event operationsThink beyond forms and dashboards.Future event tech interactions will increasingly happen through:chatvoiceautomated assistantsreal-time conversational workflowsThat means easier guest list updates, smoother check-ins, and fewer day-of-event headaches.4. AI already helps automate fundraising workflows todayJeff shares real examples from a live campaign where AI helped:identify past donorsanalyze email history for outreach candidatesbuild targeted email sequencesremove donors from follow-ups once they gaveidentify potential sponsorsdraft sponsorship outreach emailsrecover 70% of prior auction items—in one weekThese aren't future tools—they're available now.5. Data insights after your event are about to get much smarterInstead of static reports like “top bidders” or “ticket sales totals,” AI can now surface insights like:emerging donor behavior trendsengagement shifts from last yearpricing strategy effectivenesssponsorship performance patternshidden opportunities your team may miss manuallyEven better? It can package those insights into board-ready presentations in minutes.6. The biggest mistake nonprofits make with AIMost teams are still stuck using AI like this:“Rewrite this email.”Instead, the opportunity is:“Plan and execute this outreach strategy.”Agent-style tools like Claude Co-Work or Perplexity Computer can already handle multi-step workflows automatically.Practical Ways to Start Using AI This MonthTry one of these immediately:✅ Build a donor re-engagement email sequence✅ Generate sponsor prospect lists✅ Automate auction item request emails✅ Analyze last year's event performance trends✅ Create board-ready reports in minutes✅ Test a conversational workflow for guest updatesStart with the why, not the how—and let AI help design the solution.A Big Idea to Leave You WithFor 15 years, nonprofits have learned how to use event software. The next 15 years will be about software that learns how to work for you.Connect with Handbid:https://www.handbid.com https://www.instagram.com/handbidauctions/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/handbid/

A packed school gym, 250 tickets, and nearly thirteen thousand dollars raised set the stage for a bigger conversation: how everyday food choices can lower the risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer. We share what actually matters for prevention, cutting through hype to focus on the patterns that quietly shape your health over decades. We unpack how atherosclerosis builds, cholesterol-rich particles slipping into artery walls, inflammation mounting, plaques narrowing flow, and why that “plumbing” model explains angina, heart attacks, TIAs, and strokes. Then we translate the science into action: the Portfolio diet's LDL-lowering power, the DASH diet's blood pressure wins, and the shared core of effective eating styles. Fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds do the heavy lifting; fermented or lower fat dairy can fit if used thoughtfully; saturated fat stays low, especially if you already have cardiovascular disease. We also get candid about cancer risk. Processed meat is a group 1 carcinogen, red meat raises risk at modest doses, and high-heat cooking can create harmful compounds. The antidote is not perfection, it's proportion. We show how to build “super plates” instead of chasing superfoods, why legumes and nuts are reliable anchors, and how to plan a plant-forward pattern that works with your real life. That includes making room for protein powders or fortified shakes when you need convenience, recovery support, or higher protein without force-feeding endless tofu or beans. If you want practical, sustainable steps that move your numbers and protect your future, this conversation gives you the blueprint: more fiber, fewer saturated fats, fewer ultra-processed calories, and meals you actually want to repeat. What happens when philanthropy becomes more about control than community? Can generosity still be called generosity when tax benefits and personal recognition take center stage?   Join us for today's episode to question the hidden dynamics behind modern fundraising and explore what true public stewardship really looks like! This conversation features Glen Galaich, a respected philanthropy leader with more than 25 years of experience in donor education and fundraising. As the founder of the Stupski Foundation, which works across San Francisco, Oakland, and Hawaii, Glen has spent years examining how wealth shapes giving. He is also the author of the book Control: Why Big Giving Falls Short, in which he challenges traditional philanthropic systems and calls for greater accountability, trust, and honesty in the sector. Throughout the conversation, Glen unpacks the idea of donor-centric fundraising and its historical roots, tracing it back to Andrew Carnegie's "Gospel of Wealth." He discusses how philanthropy often becomes tied to power, ego, and tax advantages rather than genuine generosity. Glen explains the psychological shifts that can happen when people gain significant wealth, often leading to insecurity and a stronger desire for control. He also explores trust-based philanthropy, participatory grantmaking, and the importance of unrestricted funding.  Furthermore, Glen emphasizes that donors should act as public stewards, staying accountable to the communities they aim to serve, while fundraisers must create honest conversations and challenge unhealthy power dynamics within philanthropy. In this episode, you will be able to:  - Recognize the difference between generosity and philanthropy. - Learn how donor control can affect community impact. - Understand the importance of trust-based philanthropy. - Identify why unrestricted funding supports stronger outcomes. - Learn how tax benefits influence philanthropic decisions. - Recognize the role of fundraisers in guiding donor accountability. - Understand how wealth can shape donor behavior and mindset. - Learn why public stewardship should guide charitable giving. What the Fundraising
293: Fundraiser Wellness & Healing Your Nervous System with Dr. Linnea Passaler

What the Fundraising

As a fundraiser, your ability to handle stress is constantly tested. Fundraising requires lot of hard work, sacrifice, rejection, and honestly, sometimes trauma. If you have a sensitive nervous system, like many fundraisers do, you're more prone to burnout, anxiety, and chronic stress. So, how can we prevent that? Today's guest is here to help!  Dr. Linnea Passaler is the Founder and CEO of Heal Your Nervous System, a digital health startup that uses a combination of neuroscience and somatic work to help those struggling with overwhelm, trauma, burnout, and anxiety to heal their dysregulated nervous systems and thrive. This episode is particularly important to me because the more I have learned about the nervous system over the years, the more I have realized that one of the main barries that fundraisers face is that the work of fundraising can be very disregulating. And without the right understanding, tools and framework we don't understand why we're constantly experiencing low energy, dread, and burnout. We keep trying to manage our time, but I really think it's all about how we manage our nervous system.  During this conversation, Linnea teaches you how to regulate your nervous system so that you can handle stress and accomplish more without it leading you to dysregulation and burnout. She details the connection between trauma and burnout and shares her 5-step framework for healing your nervous system. Because of your brain's neuroplasticity, we can reverse the damage that's done when we feel overwhelmed or powerless. If you've been feeling powerless, constantly overwhelmed, or a lack of purpose in your role as a fundraiser, don't worry. You're not alone and there is a light at the end of the tunnel! These tips are just what you need.
